Cr500!!! I personally messed up the following things after an engine swap to loose spark, I installed the CDI pulse generator magnet 180degrees off, had bad grounds between the engine and the frame and the frame and spark coil ground, I pinched the wire harness between the frame and engine, I have left grounds terminals hanging loose, and those are the screw ups I can remember easily.... Have not started to TS. yet the key switch was broken I am going to replace the switch that may be the it if not I will do more testing may be bad contacts from sitting.I will keep in touch you.
got the big red going I cleaned the engine stop switch,replaced the ignition switch,cleaned the ignition coil terminals I got spark. cleaned carb and it started up I am very happy.Harvey thank you for the video.
hi harvey i got the cdi box wired it to diagram and no luck , i an getting 2 or 3 volts from black n yellow to coil wire ,, my on off switch turns still not working right,,ill have to trace the green wire/ i am getting around 12 dc volts from dci pick up does that seem right ,but once it enters cdi box i get only 2/3 volts

i will let you know ,waiting for the cdi box and connectors to be shipped, what i found out so fare is the on off switch is not grounding the switch i think to cdi box,,and no power from cdi box to coil ,stator is good ,cdi pick up is good, just no power to coil , i will get back to you when i get the parts in, thanks
joe18370 , U use the phase, "no power from CDI box to coil", the CDI box is powered by the stator, don't expect 12Volts anywhere near the CDI box, if U do, expect burnt wires. the CDI is powered by about 60Volts AC when the engine is running,. Hey Oxy!!! I like the 12VDC CDI hack as one does not need the stator or any thing other than the pulse generator... Takes all the variables out of what is wrong with my 3 wheeler.... I hope this helps, thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!
I have a 1984 200es and my engine run/off switxh read nothing when it's was turned to run and it read 3ohms when turned to off. also the nuetral.safety switch read 60 ohms. are either of those normal?
My 82 ATC 200 will idle ok but when i rev it right up, it sputters quite badly. when i pull a load too. new sparkplug, stator is 230ohms, new fuel, carb rebuilt. very confused.

Hey Tim, All coils really need quite a bit of current at a relatively low voltage from the CDI.... I'm thinking that Ur CDI or the power into Ur CDI from the stator maybe a little weak.... I would clean up all the ground connections first, (makes sure that all the power gets to the CDI and coil), I would also check and clean the other connections... Then I would consider changing the CDI.... I'm really thinking dirty grounds, though... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

the switch green and black wires have 9 volts in them , when i touch black to ground it sparks but the black/yellow put out high voltage so when black wire sparks voltage jumps but why
Hey George, Can U inspect the stator? I would do that before I replace it.... I would clean up its contact to the engine also... What brand of ATV what year is it???? @@HarveySpooner so I have 2 hondas I picked up (a 185s and 200s both early 80s) and the 185 will run but at high rpm then quickly die when down to idle (already timed it with new carb) and the 200s didnt get spark till I put a new stator on it and new plug but even with spark, and ether spray I cant even get it to bark a bit, any suggestions ?? Hey Harvey your videos have been so much help and enjoyable to watch I've been following you for quite a few years now and with your instructions hasn't been necessary to ask a question but know I've found myself in need of some advice I have a 1985 200M it was in poor condition when I bought it "whole other story " I'm in the process of rebuilding the engine "complete tear down case split ETC" in the meantime I've acquired a 1982 200E that the engine might run so I've transplanted onto the 200M, my problem is now I have no natural light and no spark I'm aware that the act's came with different CDI but the wiring seems the same? I know the 200M wiring is good as I was able to start the trike with the original engine after replacing the cdi,coil and pulse generator so what am I missing? Thank you sir and I really appreciate your videos you're a top notch instructor and your efforts are much appreciated.
Harvey, will a 200s CDI unit work on a 200es? The 200es unit is physically larger than the 200s but the connectors are the same. I have no spark on my 200es. My 200s runs.I swapped the CDI units and neither bikes run when doing that. My stator resistance reads 295 and pulsar reads 35 which I believe to be within specs. Also, could you take some up close video of one of your 200es wiring from the stator and key switch/headlight area? Thanks for any help.
revitup1965 , The 200S and the 200ES motors are basically the same, minus the electric starts, 12V charging system, and shaft drive. So, the 200S CDI will work on the 200ES if wired properly. But, some of the safety stuff will be bypassed, (for example, it will start in gear), I have a few things going on, it may take me a few days to get to that video, thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!

Everything checks out at the cdi plug and have even tried different CDI boxes, by passed the kill switch. Reverse switch. Tried different pickups. Coils. Even the stator and nothing. I've got no clue why I don't have spark. Any input from you would be great since you know these machines so well. Thanks.

I would try running a wire from the engine, (make sure it has good contact, I normally attach it up on the pulse generator cover), I would then run that wire to were the spark coil is, I would make sure that the spark coil has good contact with the frame and that Ur new ground wire has good contact with the coil and frame.... If that doesn't help, I would keep it and check the CDI pulse generator gap between it and the magnet, I normally set the gap to be a single sheet of paper, just make sure that it does not touch.... If these things don't help, I would consider changing the pulse generator, but, get back to me first..... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

Hey Ronald!!! I would start with a new plug!!! Been burned by a marginal plug too many times!!! On some ATVs, if the stop button or circuit is activated, sometimes they spark intermittently, cut the black wire with the white strip on the cdi such that it can be hooked back together easily.... If it starts and runs, Ur life is good if not, I would swap the cdi,,,, Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

jerry godin , The 1984 Honda 200S does not have a neutral switch, do U mean the 200ES? If U float, (disconnect), the on/off switch, and the neutral switch wires from the CDI, and leave everything else connected properly, it will spark and run. its a 1984 honda 200 trx the cdi has a charge of 15 volts at the coil wire but no discharge both coils new and old are reading at 4.5 oms.is this a ground problem

i have what i belive to be a 1984 200 big red e its runs but if i ride it and it gets hot then quits and wont start back till its cool agian idk what could couse this help if you can
Hey Kenny!!!! Unfortunately, one would have to use the method of elimination to find Ur problem, I would start cheap, replace the plug and make sure that there is full gas flowing to the carb, also, make sure that there is no water in the carb or gas tank.... From there, I would use my portable 12VDC CDI box to make sure it is not an ignition issue.... I would probably change the spark coil next, it is fairly cheap and easy to change.... Harvey Spooner the reverse light stays on can't start it.tried jumping the safety and reverse switch don't work lol.trike is in good shape it's just the reverse lite stays on so either the reverse switch I tried two of them used.or in the that wire ?

Hey what would cause the coil to kill power out of cdi when hooked up? Unplug an gets power back out of cdi I'v tried 4 coils same thing?

I will SOMETIMES have one little spark for a second then nothing if that helps diagnose. I've tried different plugs wires and caps as well .

Hey John, I have looked at a lot of ATV wire harness and have not seen a gray wire to the CDI unit, what year, cc, model, and make ATV do U have???? Thanks for the info, watching, and commenting!!!

Harvey Spooner the reverse light stays on can't start it.tried jumping the safety and reverse switch don't work lol.trike is in good shape it's just the reverse lite stays on so either the reverse switch I tried two of them used.or in the that wire ?
