- Here in this video you would learn how to test a bike or motorcycle cdi unit using a multi meter. CDI unists are very common now a days on motorcyle. CDI stands for capacitor discharge ignition system. It is very important to know and properly test the cdi box before replacing it in case if the bike is not starting.

Thanks for the quality lesson, very very helpful. It's always good to learn from someone who actually understands what they are teaching.
how much will it cost for you to rebuild my ktm cdi?
Fantastic. Bought 3 of these Cdi’s and now can check see if any are good. Not only have you shown how to check them but also what each terminal does. This is info that doesn’t come with the cdi unit nor is it shown in any electrical manual- thank you very much.
I agree it's nice to find somebody that can explain how it works from point to point and also show certain values you must have or you don't want thank you very much
Thank you so much for providing such a detailed and thorough explanation. I now understand not only how to test a CDI but also how to make or repair one. Thank you!
Subbed, very good info in a straight forward manner, thank you for your vids, keep them coming, ive been workin on bikes about 30 years and the only CDI's i have repaired have all been a simple capacitor failure... replaced the main capacitor and they spring into life, your vid on the other components inside has opened up a new Avenue of learning for me, thank you sir 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I agree. It's an excellent teaching and demo. Very practical and thorough. Thank you!
Very educational someone to show you exactly how it works and step by step how to test it very helpful I wish I had seen this video before I went and ordered a new cdi
Finally someone that knows how to break down the functionality, operations and how to test them on a CDI box. Thanks!! Your newest subscriber as of today.
Cant agree more!!!
i guess Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a method to log back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost my login password. I love any tips you can give me
@Jackson Jaime Instablaster =)
@Maddox Sam I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out now.
I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Maddox Sam it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my account!
Thank you for this good explanation of what I've mostly always seen as black magic! Thanks to you, I got the bike running again. My ignition all tested out good, it turned out to be the kill switch!
Just wanted to say, This has been a Lot of help!!
Very helpful i was getting no spark and decided to watch this video and determine it was the cdi i ordered a new one hopefully thats the case thank you
WOW. That was the BEST description I've found on just how the CDI boxes function.
Thank you very much Sir!! You are A Very good Teacher.👍👍
Best video explaining the CDI and I highly recommend watching if you are a mechanic and want to know HOW ELECTRIC COMPONENTS WORK this is the video for you. Thank you for the complete explanation. *****
My activa is return from two mechanics without repair due to high repair cost and non releavent expenses now I am sure I will repair my activa at home
Very useful information for me in dentails. I have analog multimeter old type but still it is working and it is useful today also
Thanks
Brilliant, really informative. Always wondered how CDIs actually function. Thank you. Knowledge is Power!!!
Second that! Thanks and God bless! ❤
Finally I have a good idea of what CDI is all about.i would really love to learn more about motorbikes.i want to be a proffesional bike repairer.thankyou for the insight.
Thank you
I really enjoyed your lesson
I'll be applying it tomorrow.
Thank you this video was very helpful. I am checking a Denso unit for a Suzuki GSG650, a bit different but I found continuity, so will pursue this and hopefully have my bike running fine again.
Omgf thank you sir Ive searched for videos to explain the function and diagnosis of my cdi on my 81 gs1100 thank you amazing video

Best video of cdi testing , very easy way of learning, thanks.
Great knowledge & I love how you talk about your knowledge and how you’re basic all knowing in such. A. Matter of fact ways then Proceed to explain how he used to make Them from scratch which nobody has ever done.which noone would ever expect someone. To. Sssay that
Yes, you are correct, the bike Alternator, put out like 3 phase 400 volts, love your diagram.
Very goog explanation. Down to the components. You really know basic electronics. Thank You!
Thank you for your video. i thought my cdi was bad, but your video and my testing shows that its ok. I still have intermittent spark to still troubleshoot. The coil checks good. but not sure yet on rectifier or maybe crank sensor or bad wiring on my 150cc Lifan
thanks, brother you saved my money and life thank you so much
electricians nowadays charging a lot of money on just detecting the fault
Excellent video - I wish I could send my inline 4 motorbike issues so you could help diagnose
Very simple to understand!! Thank you!!
This is the best video I've seen for understanding the cdi. I can now apply the basic concept to a cdi on larger bikes. Could you do a video for larger CDIs, please? On a bike with 2 coils/sparkplug, there should be a ground wire and two ignition wires to the coils plus the pulse wire for a total 5.. But what are all the extra wires for? (In my case 4 extra wires) Temperature sensors, kill switch? I'm confused. Online wiring diagrams explain only the color codes, not the function of each post. Thanks
I'm sorry as such bikes are not around me here. If I'll get a chance, sure I'll do video on such cdis. Best wishes.
Very good explanation . I know engines but the wiring always gives me headache 😂👍🏼👍🏼
Hope now you could easily understand the wiring.
great video. im going to try now on my bike and see if this is my issue.
Thank you, I was easily able to identify my CDI being bad and having a short. 👍
Very nice video thank you..... please explain if hard material (instead of soft silicon) how to remove by providing heat. Pls share new video explaining same
Yes. Good comment. I will bring videos on that too here on my channel.
Very nice, the elusive cdi box,is it good or not, thank you!
Thank you for your ability to articulate simply
Thank you so much for sharing this great knowledge. Its useful to test them if a quad or bike isn't worth fixing. One question is how come the current flows back towards cdi unit to the (+ plus) of capacitor instead of going to coil and then plug.???
Like current from a DC battery goes from Positive to negative
Current actually flow negative to positive. It is the movement of electrons, not protons.
DC electrical - current flows from the neg. to the pos. as taught in eletronics theory the electrons move thru the depletion zone to the holes. and it's proven in application, that this is what happens. the confusion is the fault of a long ago guy that was believed to be "cock of the walk" & "told" the eletronic community, that is how it is, so they printed hundred of books & taught this for years, until it was disproved. so the fix was ; the books, schematics, ect. was called conventinal current flow. which aligned with thier system. a lot of teachers & books will say if it is actual current flow or conventional. as a student of electronics , one must do the inversion in your head for hands on field applications
Woww it's realy helpfull for all bike mechanic s
I have a xl degree 250cc, for alternator pin that you have demonstrated on the diagram, I have the supply for the ignition coil connected to it
Thanks very much for the working of cdi unit everything well explained
Thanks for valued comment. Watch the other part of this video recently uploaded when I have shown it's circuit troubleshooting and repair.
Thanks for the video but next time I need to know how to test the ignition coil.
Yes sure. Stay tuned. In next some video i will show testing of ignition coil.
"Don't skip around" provides no info until 2:50
Great 👍
Finally simple breakdown
Great to the point video. Thanks !
Awesome video, from Australia, thank you
Nice explanation. 4:33 So basically, that constant "On / Off" thing that's happening in that cycle is a similar thing to how an old distributer cap works that older carburettor engines of cars use?
Very nice 😊
Do the CDI are the same for 50 cc to 600 cc or the engine size have different AC CDI 😊
Thanks ☺️
Thank you sir now my son can fix his motorcycle
Thank you for your videos. My problem is one cdi works a/c works on one of my bikes and not the other? Look forward to your answer! Thank you!
If you are swapping a CDI unit from one bike to another, it should work as long their systems are identical. If it doesn't work, check bike wiring, ignition switch, magnet coil and pulser coil and wiring connections.
Thank you for the video. I need to make a homemade DC CDI for a motorcycle. I'm trying to understand how DC CDI alter the spark timing. Some of them have two trigger coils, one advanced and one at TDC. Somehow the CDI box switches to the advanced trigger at a certain rpm. Other designs only use one trigger coil and they advance the timing as rpm increase by some electronic means.
Do you have any videos explaining this? Is there a book I can read?
I really want to understand how that works.
Very helpful and very well explained. Many thanks.
Thks four your excellent video I have a Piaggio Zip 2T other day I drive and same one stop me and tell me my rear lights is blinking after 2 days all my lights is blown front and rear I’m surprise my fuse don’t blown also when I drive in full throttle same times is cut don’t the speed what you think is my regulator fault thank you help appreciate
My bike is sparking several times throughout one stroke, not just at TDC, and causing backfire etc, is this the cdi?
Very good video. Love how he explains what each terminal is and what it does. Especially love how he kept poking and jabbing at the silicone! 😂😂😂
Awesome ❤ , I have a question how do I set the pulse discharge rate of CDI and how do I configure the discharge rate is there any formula in the factor of cc, displacement or something.
Thanks. For parameter adjustments, you may design your own microcontroller based cdi unit and program it in the way you want. Wishing you good luck.
Hi thank you so much for your video , it was very helpful .
This was VERY helpful... Thank You!!!
At minute 5.35 i understood that this is for the AC-version, but i have the DC, you should clarify this in the title.
Thanks you have solved my problem, thank you very much
Very well put together video extremely helpful
Hi. Is there a way to tell which CDI is AC and which is DC type? Just by measuring pins on CDI? They very often not marked and even sellers don't know what they are selling.
Great sir you design and convert point bike to cdi bike
Very educated one, thank you very much
thank you !very good video ! I learnt alot
Thank you very much. I have a 1979 Yamaha 250cc snowmobile. Is there another cdi box I can use
very important video. keep it up
Very good video informative I liked it thank you
This is a great video 👍 Can you please explain how I would check a cdi for a Suzuki Eiger 400 4x4 manual shift as this cdi has 16 posts, they are in groups of 4. If you can help me out that would be great.
Thank you,
Duane
Very helpful thank you, you earned a sub good sir!
You Must!! Lol if you didnt learn anything you v must watch again . He says.!! You Da MaN !! The CDI Man!
My CDI box looks exactly the same but has a seperate wire coming out of the bottom left of the box. How would I test that wire? I'm getting no spark, I've ruled out plug and coil, now testing CDI and next I will test the stator. I hope it's not a wire somewhere. They're tied up in factory wire harnesses and I will likely cause more issues if I have to cut in and open up all the harnesses so I'm hoping my issue is just a part I can replace.
Great vid. Can a CDI progressively fail? In other words, bikes run smoothly at lower rpm then run roughly at higher rpms. Carbs are cleaned and synced perfectly on this twin cylinder Ural. Grateful for any advice and how to test for this..........
It is possible. Replace CDI if it's cheaper in your are as they are very inexpensive in our area. Otherwise check everything before attempting CDI replacement.
Having same issue, bike started fine for a while, ran rough at running rpms above idle. Then it wouldn't start at all, no spark. The CDI passed the short circuit tests but its $10 so i ordered another one to check to see it that was the problem. Have checked stator resistances and tested voltages and can't find any issue. May something failed open instead closed so it doesn't show a short? IDK, we will see.
Very good video!! Thank you! Subscribed!
I get it now there sorta like the old points and condensor in old ignition sysyems only now done with micro processor parts, cool.snooky pa.
Thanks very impormative video
Very good breakdown! Thanks
Sir, can you please explain the cdi unit box having 10 pins mostly used in hero pleasure?
7:45
Could you tell us how this works relating to each terminal?
1 Is Pulse, but what pulses it, the alternator/stator?
2 Is Ground (I get that)
3 Is sometimes ground, sometimes NC, a lot of explanation
would be appreciated on this pin.
4 Is Alternator/Stator, (doing what?) ''alt power'' power coming
from the alt?
5 Is 'coil' , so is this power pulsing to the coil positive? (I guess it its)
Thanks!
Yes, all your understanding is right and well.
Good job! I understand it more now!
So should there always be 2 grounds on every cdi ? If you hold the terminals on the 2 grounds will it beep & is that normal ?
Should there be continuity between the 2 ground wires on the dc cdi?
Hos would you check, and which point is what on a cdi for Husqvarna 510 2010?
Very helpful video, but what blows a CDI so the bike does not get a spark? Thanks
wires rubbing on a ground, like a frame. getting the stator wet and not repairing the problem (usually just a new gasket for the flywheel cover) wiring mixed up. capacitors dont last forever. either do diods or anything electrical. remember 80% of problems of automotive are related to electrical problems. the list goes on but thats a god start for you ton start thinking like a diagnostic machine.
I love you 🎉 thanks so much grate video
What voltage should i be reading out of the pulser coil circuit? Green and blue wire
Thanks brother
Great video
greetings, the video is excellent, I just want to know something, my cdi on the multimeter does not show any voltage on any of the pins, is this a sign that it is correct or not, Thanx
Thanks for liking. You should find voltage on alternator pin when you kick your bike. Voltage could be up to 50v ac. This is the main feed to cdi on which the cdi unit works. If you don't find such voltage, remove the connector from the cdi and check the voltage again. If still no voltage, you have a bad alternator coil. If you get voltage off connector on kicking, you have a shorted cdi. Also give attention to cdi ground wire and kill switch wire. Some times they are responsible for fault. Regards،
@@JahanZeb1976 Thanks for the reply, Alternator or coils, whatever you call them, give voltage, I connected it to the multimeter plus to the pickup and ground on the chassis, it shows a voltage of 150, when I start to crank the voltage increases
and the bomb, when I connect the plus to the pipe where the spark plug goes, nothing happens, and when I connect the normal plus and minus on the bomb, it records and shows some voltage for a short time, and so on
VERY informative, and simple! Love it
Nice job. Thank you sir.
please make video on AC vs DC using multimeter
The diagram shows the pulse trigger connected to ground, should this not give continuity when testing pins (9:08)? My CDI has continuity to ground via the trigger or alt coil, not sure which one....Or am I reading your diagram wrong.. Thanks
How much voltage an AC CDI recieves from magneto? Also, can I run an AC CDI on 12V 50Hz AC step down transformer for my project??? (I want continuous sparks at the spark plug)
Very good explanation brother
Have you ever fix CDI for XV400 Virago?
You are a hero. 😅
Guy knows his Stuff.
Thanks sir
Sir when u are going to do the video of repairing cdi? I will wait sir
Very soon it's repair video will be with you here on this channel. Video is ready, let me edit and upload it. Stay tuned.
@@JahanZeb1976 ✌✌
@@JahanZeb1976 Thanks for the video , Have you uploaded the repair video for the cdi? I checked your channel and didn't see and cdi repair video. If you have a video for it can you post a link for it. Thanks

It's ready but need uploading and sharing. You may subscribe, press on bell icon then all so you will get notification on each upload. Thanks again for your time and patience. Best wishes 🎉💐
What about a 8 pin cdi does that only have 2 grounds or will anymore then 6 pin have 3 grounds ?
Your video very useful for me
Sir which chemical is use to open cdi box I mean which is use to melt selicon...
Hello. I am currently trying to fix my son's speedfight 2 LC 50cc scooter. No spark is present. The wiring loom has a 5 pin CDI fitted and also the original 8 pin dellorto CDI/oil pump unit fitted. The bike did start when first purchased, with difficulty. Any ideas how to solve the issue?
Great information
Very helpful and a much needed video
If time permits please make a video on Royal Enfield TCI unit opened.
