Spectacular video of this procedure, you have the knack of voicing what other people need to know..even if they do not know it yet. Funny enough I have to pull mine this next couple weeks for a re-seal due to leaks progressing to probable air leaks causing running problems so this and your timing video has given me great confidence where before I had very little.
Sweet bro
@@downtheshedwithbyron quick question . I lined my timing marks up at TDC with the Z marks all lined up and removed the timing sprocket with puller . However I have a feeling I may be on the exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke . The pump has gone in to be rebuilt now but is this going to matter ?
I think we can safely say you are now classified as a ‘guru’.
Also, well done for actually posting the first quality video/tutorial on arguably the most daunting of all repairs on this model type. 👍
Long comment/post incoming..............
Great channel and videos. After watching 3 of your videos regarding injection pump removal, installation and timing, collected all the parts and tools required to rebuild and test fuel injectors and replace a suspect shaft seal on my injection pump in a 2003 Kia Pregio diesel.
Have lived with horrible white smoke cold starts, erratic idle and diesel accumulating in the sump for over 3 months thinking it was a leaking injector and air in the fuel lines. Eliminated air ingress in to fuel lines as a possible culprit of white smoke and hard starting by replacing all rubber hoses.
Tackled the injectors one Sunday morning. Removed, cleaned, new nozzles and pop tested. New copper seals, reinstalled, but no cigar. Rough idle and white smoke on start up persisted.
Replaced fuel filter and fuel filter housing plus gauze at inlet banjo of injection pump. No luck.
Drained and dropped fuel tank to check inlet strainer, clean as a whistle.
Scratching my head, i thumbed through a few of your videos Sunday evening (defeated, depressed and downtrodden) and stumbled upon the video where you used clear fuel hose to view air bubbles at either inlet or return at injector pump. I had nothing to lose.
It's now Monday morning.
Installed clear hose from fuel filter housing to injector pump inlet. No air bubbles. Did the same to the return line.
BINGO!!!!
Air bubbles central! How did i miss that all this time? Then dread struck me. I've never been near a diesel injection pump let alone remove one, replace the main shaft seal, reinstall and time.
Ordered the timing tool and dial indicator, jumped on a train with my pushbike and collected same day. Local diesel specialist shop stocked the injection pump shaft seal, collected same day.
Gritted my teeth and proceeded to remove injector pump after a short detour to a car parts store to buy the correct size crank shaft bolt hex nut. Without it, i couldn't spin the engine. Injector pump removed Monday evening.
It's now Tuesday morning.
Injector pump on makeshift plastic bench in the back yard staring at me. I can hear it laughing. Replaced the shaft seal. Simple job. Test fit the timing tool and dial indicator. Thankfully, right sized thread.
Install injector pump and triple check timing adjustment. Reinstall everything else, bleed the fuel system and about to start the engine. Convince myself to call a tow truck truck next morning if this doesn't go well or at least shell out about AUD $1700 for an exchange injector pump.
Moment of truth..................turn the key............YOU LITTLE RIPPA!!!!!!
Starts and purrs like a kitten. A minute in and after a few internalised fist pumps and my elation subsided, I realise it's running with no help from the choke to increase idle speed. Bonus! Everything went to plan!
Sorry for the long winded post/comment. I wanted to convey my gratitude for your videos. They helped immensely and gave me the confidence to tackle this job.
For anyone out there doubting themselves, I'm no mechanical genius. Just give it a go. You may surprise yourself.
Thanks again Byron.
That is bloody awesome mate 🍻 im so glad you got it sorted wow that a feeling
Take it easy mate Byron 👍
Loving the Gq series, quality content and quality workmanship 👍
Top notch job!!! Best video I’ve seen so far regarding removal and install of the IP. I’m currently researching how to do this on my TD27 powered Nissan Homy, and it’s tough to come by any sort of useful information on this subject here in the USA(especially when it was never even sold here). This video was so helpful. Thanks for taking the time to do this and share it with us.
No dramas mate im glad i could help you
Take it easy Byron 👍
Hi Bryon, Man you are one cool dad . Love how you get you children involved with the projects . The bids are very informative and clear to understand. I wondering anyone could help me . I have D21 TD 2.7 turbo . Went to start this morning cranked over . Sputtered then blow a load of blue smoke then dropped. The has good compression and brand new head complate with valves ect about 40 thousand kms ago , block bores fine
Byron - Thanks so much for this video - we are a shop in the US and we can't find any service information for this vehicle - your help has been amazing 👍
Sweet hope all went well
Doing this swap as we speak this weekend and this is the only video I found to actually help me Alot along the way without having to jump video to video 👌👌thanks man big help
Thats what its all about helping out a mate 👍
Take it easy bro
Hey mate thank you I’m taking my pump out this week thx for your video
No dramas bro
Awesome video . I know not much about diesels but I’ve got a leak on the inside by look of it on the injector pump so I reckon it’s time to pull it out myself and send it to be reconditioned. Your video might have saved me alot of money . I know a garage would rip me big time for this job . Thanks .
Good on ya mate have a crack
The long bolts off the cover plate will also fit into gear bolt hole if you don’t have a puller , this is almost identical to the D21 Navara TD27 pump removal ….
Thanks champ 👍
What an awesome channel I have just found! You legend!!!
Cheers Dan
Take it easy mate
Super detailed and actually shows eveeerrything and where shit is and size really good video mate

Bloody great video mate cheers! 🍻
All good brother
Just an update , all the I for you you gave on this vid was identical to doing the injection pump on my 1992 TD27 D21 Navara , thanks for the awesome vid it gave me the confidence to do the injector pump myself albeit with slightly less room than the td42 , many thanks 👍👍
Another Quality video mate well done.
Awesome video, thank's for sharing !
I could have used this a couple years ago 🤣 love the vid Byron!

Hope you get it sorted mate 👍

Hi Byron. Td42 pump leaking, can I replace washers and rubber o rings with patrolapart kit? following your instructions to take it off then replace?
Gday mate
Could give it a go and see how you go mate
@downtheshedwithbyron wasn't sure if if leaking meant it was always something more serious! But if it can be just some rubber o rings and washers I'll give it a go' thanks mate 👍
is this applicable to a zd30 engine i cant seem to find any good videos as informative as this one, I have an absolute lemon of a patrol 03 model
Hey mate 👍
Im not sure i haven't touched a fuel system on a ZD30 sorry mate
Good man. Some good tips
Cheers mate
Mate, how did you prevent the timing gear (and crank) from turning when you torqued it to spec? Also, in regards to your other vid on plunger adjustment, I was just curious where your pump timing marks ended after using the tool to adjust it? Were you back to being lined up or advanced? Thanks heaps!
Hey mate
To Torque that nut up i didn't have any dramas of it turning
Crack? Id say it wasnt located right maybe
After doing that plunger high im not sure where it lines up id have to have a look
I have a small fuel leak on the line under the injector pump. No the fuel delivery lines. What do you suggest?
Sorry mate for a super later reply
How did you going? Get it sorted
you make it so easy
Number 1 again
Nice 👍🏻
Cheers
Any link to the correct size h puller please
Snapon H puller similar to the steering wheel puller
no scouring ,no lip . Injector pump was reconditioned about 5 yrs ago by previous owner . Not during giving it just got new seals as he could not start it . I changed the fuel filter blend system . notice the little gauze thimble fitting under banjo belt was missing ! Also when changed the filter I bleed any water out of the old one . The alarm on dash need not light up . There was a fair big in . I took of the little hose supply near the in injectors and primped the system again .Just hot I flew drops ? So i got my mate to turn on the ingition thinking cut off solenoid may be closed. Could not hear anything . Only the relay to the glow plugs . Checked power to soleloid. Getting 10.8 volts . Also when tried to prime I notice diesel going out of the injector pump . The plumger was firm . That when j thought maybe the solenoid not opening. Please I anyone has any ideas . I much appreciate it . She been a great reliable truck and got very fond of her . She had lots of love and well cared for suspension, Oil changes , new gearbox ect
Thank you so much anyone .
Hey did you still have a dramas with the patrol or work it out
It is the line under the front of the pump.
Rogee
For some reason my GQ won't start when it's under half a tank. You think the fuel pump could be stuffed? Or something else
Not sure dude havent had that fault before.
Do you need to prime it to get it going again? Could be lift pump
Ive got a video on teating your fuel system maybe try that
@@downtheshedwithbyron nah don't need to prime. Starts fine when fuel is full. It's bloody odd haha. I'll check out the vid

Faulty gauge?
Are they good on diesel ? Are they burn alot ?
They love the diesel mate
Bonjour merci pr vos vidéo moi g un problème avec ma patrol elle l'a une perte de puissance vs pouvez m'aider
Sorry not sure what youve said
how many km on when you changed it and why was it getting noisy
And what was happening with it. Did the revs just run away on the old pump, what causes that?
Gday guys
I used a pump that my mate had sitting on a shelve for year, km dont know.
This is our old project gq patrol sowas use the part we had.
And after 17 year out of trade school i remember the old fella telling us if you need to shut of a diesel use a block of wood so i had that ready and yep it ran on.
Why so i give the pum to A1 Diesel in Perth for exchange for another 1 for my mate GU just a 10mm and i asked old mate for a quick report.
The spill ring on the rotor has seized and has taken out the governor lever.
So yeah that about the stroy.
If yous get time check out the project GQ we our building
Take it easy Byron 👍

Hey Shane
All done i hope the video helps you out
👍
@@downtheshedwithbyron yeh sweet, thank you mate, will go check it out now 👌🏽
Hay mate any issues with the timming ect ?
Jjst about to do mine and yeh bit scared to do
Hey mate no dramas runs sweet
but ive bought the tool to do the job should do a video on it
Give me a week or so and I'll see what I can do 👍
Here ya go easy Az z zz
👍 yeah not to bad of a job
Yo Byron so is it different if changing to 11mm pump, or why after getting the z zz lined up now I'm told I need a tool to time the pump, cause it tries to start but won't run
Fitted changed pumps now genuinely stuck
does it have to be a specific piston at TDC or just match the two timing marks and you’re sweet? about to tackle this job on my gq and don’t want to stuff it up 🥲
Gday mate
TDC of cylinder 1 making sure the timing marks line up
@@downtheshedwithbyron probably a dumb question, but can you determine what cylinder you’re at tdc on, without checking if the valves are rocking?
Yeah mate with the timing mark on the harmonic balancer then check if the timing marks are lined up on the fuel pump drive gear Z in to ZZ
@@downtheshedwithbyron awesome, cheers heaps mate! bloody helpful video.
