@@Askemanden a superteam is when a team with already strong players acquire other strong players in their respective teams. in this case, sphinx, flamez, and arguably mezzi were the best players in their teams. that's why c9 was called a superteam; they already had a pretty good lineup but went through a slump even with 3 top 20 players. sh1ro was a top 3 player, ax1le was considered niko's contender for best rifler, hobbit was a very impactful player, then add a fragging igl in electronic, and perfecto who was considered the best support player.
just because vitality bombed-out of katowice, it doesn't disregard the 2 events they won prior. yes, the team would've been better if zonic didn't leave had vitality given him the paycheck he deserved while magisk also staying and not replaced by mezzi but their superteam status still remains.
current superteams: vitality, faze, g2 (even with nexa in the lineup and m0nesy carrying this team's ass)
could be a superteam: falcons (if they get a star rifler), cloud9 (if they get a strong awper)

@@Askemanden How so? It's about expectations -- lots of people were very low on Dupreeh at the time he was signed. Apex was constantly being called to be kicked by the community as well. Misutaa was considered pretty bad, but with some potential maybe. People were really only hyped about Magisk/Zywoo/Zonic. They really weren't a superteam until they got Spinx.

I think something you didn't touch on with FaZe is their approach to sticking with a very multinational team is pretty unique in contrast to other teams. Their first lineup with the former G2/Kinguin guys was an interesting lineup. Also, you didn't glaze Twistzz enough.
The problem is, expectations are too high for every tier 1 team, until they form an era. Teams that come out of nowhere, with zero expectations, get more respect than December 2022-2023 G2 winning the Blast World Finals, Katowice and Cologne. The majority of people don’t understand how tough winning really is
I completely agree, unless the team is created to DOMINATE in a short notice, through throwing money at the best possible players, then it's not a super team.

A superteam isn't the same as a really good team, a superteam aquires the world's best in order to try and dominate, a really good team takes good players, maybe a superstar, and develops into the world's best

Peak Astralis being a super team is an argument that can be made because you took Astralis 2017 with 4 top 20 players (a top 3 team of the year, and a major winning roster) and gave them the choice of adding K0nfig (the best non-astralis danish player of 2017) or Magisk (the best non-astralis danish player of 2016). If you read threads at the time, there are a lot of people hyping of Magisk as a superstar and the roster as insanely stacked. I even found several people calling it a danish super team, at the time of the signing.
Is 1 player change enough to make something a super team? Either opinion is fair, imo. Eventually it ends up being a theseus' ship situation, but obviously 2 player changes seems to be enough to define something as a super team (cloud9) even when 1 of 2 players was never in the top 20, so then you have to actually figure out exactly where to draw the line. Looking at faze for the 1 player change example things get a bit muddy, since at the time of their signings pre-ropz it was only a super team if "have big names cuz they used to be good" or "cost a lot of money because of name value" are the basis and not "actually are amazing players currently." Rain was seen as completely washed, twistzz was a bit of a ? and broky was mostly unknown. All of these players come together and actually start getting their form back on point under Karrigan, then you add Ropz and most people will call this a super team because you're re-analyzing the roster based on current form at the time of adding a new 5th. That's fair, but then you have to treat all teams that way and the argument for Astralis 2018 being a super team is hard to fight against.
rambled a bit but i think this all started from me saying something like if faze 2021 was a super team then so was prime astralis and that's generally the logic intertwining the 2. nothing to do with results.
generally my definition of super team would be just about player skill level at the time of the signing and you re-evaluate rosters after each individual signing. by this logic, astralis 2018 would at the very least be a danish super team, and faze would become a super team after adding ropz.

I think a big thing with superteams is the feeling of it being artificial, like people joining forces to win rather than to developing the roster over time.

I’d argue 2018 MIBR could be considered a superteam like Faze, they broke down region barriers to become an americas super team, and signed 2 superstars in Stew and Tarik to pair with a core of the greatest Brazilian’s to play the game.

Voo's usually on point, but I do agree with you here about the difference between bringing together individually talented people on a single roster (which may not result in cohesive teamwork) like world cup or Olympic teams do, versus a team that sticks together and works their way to the top. There's no shortcut to the kind of chemistry that gets built over time, although a super team that sticks together long enough can get there.

know this game doesn’t matter to most cs players, but league recently had an amazing underdog story with DRX winning worlds. if you haven’t heard it was insane, team barely qualified and went on to win worlds. had the hardest teams back to back to back, gen g, previous worlds winners edg, t1 for the finals. had the most stacked and hard bracket and went insane. deft, a player on drx went to the same school as faker (4 time world champ) and was always in his shadow, watching him finally beat him was amazing. goes to say super teams are to me less impressive than underdogs 100%.

Superteams can be enraging, but they're also exciting! I only got into pro cs when I heard that olof and GuardiaN (two guys I'd seen a lot in fragmovies) were joining a team with NiKo (also fragmovies) and rain (my first AK skin came with a rain signature on it)
So I was like "damn that's cool I'll root for them" and here I am 6.5 years later still being a fan of NiKo, rain and karrigan
In short, I agree with what launders said about the classification of superteams. The players' resumés and the expectations of the team are the most important things

i remember watching liquid after they went a on a bad streak and was always yelling at my screen with some of stewies decisions and weapon choices. Then FAZE, who use to famously choke always, started winning alot more. Before i followed the players at all, i soon realized the star rifler of Liquid switched to FAZE and it made a lot more sense.
virtus pro 2013-2016 is a all time super team lineup imo. Snax, Pasha, Neo byali and taz is a super team on its own. The only team that could really challenge NIP or FNATIC in that era. No other team could really come close most of the times (besides that one LDLC run (womp))
They were also called the Golden 5 :DDD my favourite roster all time even though they didn't win too much in retrospect

My definition of a super team is a team that by all accounts is in that top3 or top 5 best teams of an era in terms of raw skill and talent.
If we use football as an example, Manchester City was a 'superteam' even though they didn't win a single Champions League until just this past year. Pep as a manager, the way they would dominate and crush teams on the regular, and the pure talent and stature of the players in the side made them a superteam, regardless of the fact they kept failing at the biggest trophy in Europe.
Even Real Madrid - they only won 1 Champions league in the 2000-2010 decade but you'd be laughed out of the room if you didn't think they were one of if not the best/consistently top 3 teams on the continent - thats why so many good players kept going there like Ronaldo ended up doing.
In CS terms, yea the ones you mentioned are perfect examples of superteams. It didn't matter if they won it all or not, it was whether this was, on paper, the most stacked/consistent team you could pick. When Cloud9 won their major, the superteam to beat was Faze 100%

I stand by that if stewie had never been a twitch celeb he would have been a nobody. After teams learned to expect his push and random aggression his stats dropped of severely and the dude had almost no noteworthy plays in the second half of his career.

I am finished being surprised when a "super team" fails to perform. All the hype and expectation is generated by fans and past performance on other teams, but until the delivery, it is all theoretical. When that theory falls apart, we react with massive dissapointment, but we are the ones that ultimately set ourselves up for that dissapointment in the first place. When will these organizations learn that you can't just take five players, a truckload of money, clout, and hype, mash them together and magically have a winning formula every time? It doesn't always work to manufacture success in that way. There has to be organic chemistry, the rise of Spirit being an excellent example. Additionally, while all these orgs attempt to construct their own colossus, there will always have to be losers, so the "failure" of any given team is inevitable, no matter how "super" it may be in name only.

I like using "superteam" just like in the basketball. For me early Faze Clan, french G2, and in some way NIP, Fnatic and VP from first 2 years of csgo were superteam. Especially those last 3 team are very interesting cases for me. You take some of the greatest players from css and 1.6 and forge the best lineup in your country that you can make. Those teams were made of the most iconic and winning players of older cs. I would also say that Vitality is for me superteam. With one of the best cs players, legendary coach, some of the best players on the market. And at the end we have Falcons 🙃

I think you forgot to mention Astana Dragons. Back in 2013,The true OG of CS:GO Superteam. The CIS most dominant players were there. If I remember correctly there was Edward, Markeloff, Dosia, adreN, ANGE1. They fell off because of money end or something, but in the interview then Edward said that team was not practicing, and they all think that they’re superstars and don’t need to practice.

My definition of Superteam is that you make a change that brings in an S-Tier player in their role and the change leads to at least 3 Superstars in their roles (ie., 3 of IGL, AWP, Opener, Closer, Anchor). It is most obvious when 2-3 of the stars are being added rather than a Star team adding a borderline S-Tier.
And to define S-Tier, the player should be Top20 HLTV, preferably Top10 or a recognised Top 5-6 for their role.
ropz to FaZe is a debatable Superteam signing, that I think you missed. rain and broky might not be considered Top 5 in role at this point but Twistzz (anchor) and Karrigan (IGL) likely were and with rain's recent past, I think it tips it over the line.
Astralis was debatably a Superteam when Magisk joined. Magisk had got Top20 the year before and was joining an established team of greats. The fact that Kajerbye was seen as better doesn't change what the Magisk addition meant.
Similarly Liquid adding Stewie could be debated as a Superteam as well. They were already the clear 2nd best team with 2 superstars in their roles in EliGE and NAF and then they added a Major champion. The expectations were high even with the GOAT Astralis.
If there's no salary cap, then creating a "superteam" becomes irrelevant.
The most money will ALWAYS attract the best players.

Winning alot does not = super team. Fnatic 2015 wasn’t a superteam. Astralis 2018 wasn’t a superteam. SK 2016 wasn’t a superteam.
If at least 3 or more players in a team have won at least two S-Tier Events, then that team can be called a 'Superteam'. This means that if such team comes about one almost certain side effect in the community is that there will be much expectation from it. And one possible effect is the team actually wins multiple S-Tier Events.
It took s1mple until 6 months into 2018 to win his 2nd S tier tournament but I doubt anyone would argue that s1mple wouldn't be one of the biggest and most hyped signings at the time if he left Navi.
Looking at 2017's HLTV list s1mple would surely be top 5 if he was judged by modern criteria
2018 Cloud9 beating FaZe was like when the NY Giants upset the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl.
