I have been told or read throughout my life not to file going back-and-forth and not to file the sides of your nail. But I see you doing both and you say that the nails overtime become healthier. This is a new revelation to me.
I used to keep my nails polished 90% of the time about 10 years ago and my nails were definitely more curved and slimmer/dainty looking. I barely used polish in the last 10 years afterward and my nails have flattened out, especially on my free edge. This makes some nails look “triangular” when polished unless I leave a very visible line without polish on the side walls. I recently got back to nail care and polishing! They are starting to round up more again! I think Simply Nailogical made a video on this years back about how polish protects from daily water damage so less water absorbs into the nail, which can cause it to “swell” and flatten out.
This is actually very interesting because nail polish raises moisture level in the nails. Nail polish is semi-occlusive and it slows down water evaporation from the nail bed. nailknowledge.org/blog/a-common-reason-why-nail-polish-can-quickly-peel-from-the-nail-plate
Yes, please. We want to follow the progress of this client. It's amazing how her manicure still looks so good even after 2 weeks! And yes, I have noticed myself that regular manicures and polishing improves the look, shape and length of the nails. Why? That I can't figure out either.
I used to bite my nails and the skin around. Now they are very unsymmetrical. I hated how they looked when getting longer especially because they are so trapez-like. Few days ago I started to experiment with filing and was able to make them appear a bit thinner. Love it! Now that I have found your content I am looking forward to getting prettier nails over time. I guess some damage is permanent but I see now that improvement is possible. That means a lot to me.
I noticed as well that my nails are way less flat when I wear nail polish than when I don’t ; and I also noticed that the nail bed can get longer quite quickly, which is great news ! Thank you for this new video and all we learn thanks to you !!

Thank you for the link to see her after. The difference is amazing. I am growing out damage from a manicure. The guy actually burned my natural nail with the tool that took off the top layer of my nail. I just wanted a shape and buff. No polish, no fake nails. I’m so happy you care for the health of nails. I wish I could find that here.
These are my favorite videos!!! I find myself in a trance like state… it’s your voice and the shaping … I just find it mesmerizing …. Thank you and omg your at 90k!!! Incredible!! Congratulations!!! 🎉
Yes please on seeing more on this client’s progress! I am one that chewed on my nails as a kid and have been in recovery mode for 10 years. And I have only seen progress after watching your videos and starting to implement your tips in a matter of maybe 3 weeks as of now. So yes please!! Thank you!! ❤
Thank you Anna! Since watching your videos the health of my nails have improved!!! I’m using JoJoba oil, a diamond nail file and Kerasol at bedtime. I just watch your videos when you are shaping nails and that has helped me quite a bit! 😃 I still need more practice but I’m getting there … I have one nail damaged from dip powder that I’m still growing out 🙁. It split right up the nail plate 😢 I’m trying to be patient…Thank you for all of your wonderful advice and videos!!! I appreciate you!!! 🥰❤️🙏🏾🤗
Thank you so much for your videos, I'm forever grateful. I started following your nailcare instructions 3 weeks ago and my nails and hands are already transformed! I have working hands with crooked nails and bent fingers, mimicking your filing technique has already started to affect the direction my crooked nails grow and the shape of my nailbeds. Thank you again!
Yes!! My nailbeds are very short, I used to bite. I would love to see over time the transformation! I work in healthcare and wash my hands so much I tend to neglect them.
I wanted to comment that I’m using oil along with lotion daily on my nails and feet also…. I’ve also started an oil bath for them once a week as you recommended and it’s working out and it’s improving my nails …..❤
Yes I'd love to see future updates on this clients nailcare journey - especially if the shape/curve changes - it's so interesting! I'm sure you've addressed this in many videos but I was always told never to file the sidewalls of the nails (sorry if that's not the correct terminology) but I see you do it in this video. I always feel guilty for doing this 😂 I don't know if I should leave them alone or if I'm making them even wider in the long run? (if that's even possible)
Hi JJ, I think we can file the sides of the nails but the white part, not filing into the sidewalls where the skin is connected to the nail. Otherwise how can we create for example an oval shape or almond shape if we can't file the sides of the nail at all. I haven't seen any weakness or any breaks when I file the nails like this. In fact more oval shape is actually longer lasting and less prone to cause breaks.
I would be very interested for you to create progress playlists for clients like this. I have a couple of nails I am trying to transform. One of them I had a tumor under and hoping the nail will reconnect in the place where the tumor was. This shaping video is actually the most helpful I have seen out of all of your videos for me.
Great music and love the snap shots! I’ve just received my CND RXx today and started my treatment. I’ve also set up oil and lotion stations in kitchen, powder room and bathroom. Thank you 😊
Just fascinating that regular manicures and home care can change the shape of nails. Nothing more flattering than even, uniformed shaped nails, no matter the length.

Hi Anna! Thank you so much for all the advises! I've been binge watching your videos ever since I found you. Can you please make a video about overgrown hyponychium? Everytime I let my nails grow, my hyponychium grows with them and I don't know what to do about it. Thank you ❤️
When I used to grow my natural nails out super long (when I was in my 20’s) a few decades ago, they’d start curving in on the sides and get really skinny at the very ends, similar to an almond or stiletto type shape. It was interesting! As my nails are short now, they definitely are flattened- but I’m trying to grow them out. It will be interesting to see if I can get them long like before!
Thank you again for this video, Anna 😍🥰🤩. I had commented on another video of yours, about a similar observation. Over the years, I had noticed that if I kept my nails minimally shaped and polished (all done by myself on a Sunday night after the cleaning chores and a nice bath; nothing special) my nail shape got narrower and the nailbed (pink part) got elongated and closer to the tip of my finger. I've searched online for an exact scientific reason, but haven't found one so far. I work in clinical research, so this topic really makes me wonder 🧐
Hi Alanca! Yes, I've noticed that but I don't know too many people discussing it. I know some people noticed the fact that especially when wearing gel and acrylic it happens and you would think it's maybe from wearing the nails longer or having a harder product on top but because it also happens with short nails and with only a coat of clear polish... really makes me wonder why.....
i believe soft gel pinches the nails a bit, making them look more slender! i have a very deep sidewall on my ring finger, and it once actually hurt to have soft gel on : / once i removed it, the pain from the pressure was relieved the next day
Hi Anna , always find your videos interesting and have learnt a lot by watching all the time, thankyou so much for all you do on here , I would definitely like to see an update on this clients nails , I’m jealous when I watch as I dream of nice nails , but suffer with onycholysis , but I have ubderactive thyroid problem which I’m on thyroxine for 🙃
nice lesson :) rubber base tends to bend and curl de nail, by the acids. And every base coat have some acids, so the dry and curve the nail plate. They curve even more because the coats maintaint the original curve, like hairsprays holds and bolds natural hair curves. Hope to be helpful :)
Hello Sonia! I use CND Shellac system and the base coat is not a rubber base. It’s applied very thin and it doesn’t have any acids. Nail polish does that too. Not just gel polish
I was avoiding polish for awhile. Since applying clear base/top coats of dazzle dry or Essie nail strengthen I have noticed my finger nails more curved, but not my thumbs (yet?).
I’ve been learning so much from you, thank you! My issue is my pointer and middle fingers’ white part of the nail starts growing/showing on the the sides nearly at the top of the nails. So the white part curves along with my nails on both sides making it very difficult to have all uniform fingernails. Is it something I can fix or it’s just how my nails are? Appreciate your response!
Hello! I noticed when I use OPI Nail Envy, my nails have more of a curve to them. I think that's why nails look slender as you say, after wearing polish.
I loved watching this as I have nails that look like they arevairbon and as such appreciate the technique you are using and also would love to know what can I use to soften the skin around my nails and get it to peel off thank you ❤
Thank you Anna for the great information about nail care. I have just subscribed, after binge watching you over the past few days! I do not wear nail polish very often, as I have very soft nails - genetics - exactly the same as my father`s. Yet my mother had lovely, naturally long and strong nails, that never broke! But with my nails I have found that I can only wear certain brands, Malava, Cuccio and IBD. These stay on my nails for about 3-4days without chipping or coming off some how. I always use a base coat and top coat also. The one`s that I cannot use are OPI and Nails Inc. These do not even last a day. I had Nails Inc done in a salon and had to go back the next day, as all the tops had chipped. The nail technician, didn`t know why it happened, so just took off the nail polish and gave me a refund!
The music selection is really nice. I was hoping to know low much of the sides should be filed? Seems like since I stopper acrylics my nails break on the sides where they used to file to shape my nails.
My nails definitely have a stronger c curve when polished. I have always figured that is because mine are weak and crappy, so the weight of the polish makes the sides curl in more. I know that nails are dry on the free edge because they aren’t getting the oils from the body. Some wicking does happen, though, but only for the free edge close to the skin. The tips of the nail don’t get much or any oil via wicking. Dry nails can tend to curl in. Maybe that has something to do with nails changing shape when they are polished?
Yes, but the polish is semi occlusive so it actually raises the moisture level in the nail. So the nails are actually "less dry" with polish on.... I really don't understand how this works.... When polish is removed the nails lose the moisture for sure, the ends become more white and they get more flat....
Just lovely! You are an incredible manicurist! I have been watching you fir iver a year. Question: my Blue Cross Cuticle Remover is very watery. Is that how it should be? Thank you.
Hello, yes, it’s watery. Here is a video I made explaining how to work with it How to Use Blue Cross Cuticle Remover [Product Spotlight] ua-cam.com/video/d_BAnJlJ1Bs/v-deo.html
My nails are different lengths. Should I clip them all to 1 length or file them? I have never had long nails before and so amazed at the longer ones, I hate to shorten them, but different length look weird.
Do you have any advice on a receding nail bed? I really don't know what went wrong. I polish my nails maybe twice a year and after the last time i did my nails felt tingly. I removed the polish a few days later to find that my nails were stained orange, and while almost all of my nails recovered afterwards, my middle finger continued to have the tingling feeling and the nail bed just kept receding. I read that it could possibly be an allergic reaction to the polish i used. I don't remember what polish it was, some kind of oil infused polish? I think i threw it away. In the time after that my nail health got worse, i was pregnant and not taking vitamins, stressing and picking and biting anything i could on my fingers. Overall my hands need a lot of tlc, and i really want my middle finger to grow back to where it was. I feel like i have a toenail there, its just ugly 😞
Hi ! Thank you for your content ❤ I wonder if it is ok to apply nail polish without base coat? I find that it holds much longer with just a top coat. I use Dior, Essie and Isadora nail polishes. With their original top coats
What kind of nail file are you using in the video? I use a glass file as heard it helps seal the nail edge and reduce splitting. (Not sure if that's right though). You make it look so easy and quick. It takes me hours to properly shape mine! Lol.
I started to polish my nails daily for the past handful of months, and now that I'm looking at my fingers, they do seem a bit more curved. Moreso on my right hand than left hand, weirdly enough, considering I tend to use my right hand more than my left
Lovely mani! is filing the sides as you show in the video okay? When I do it I achieve a nice slender shape however I feel it makes my nails a bit weaker on the sides, more prone to side cracks - my nails have more of a square shape naturally
It depends how much pressure you are applying and also if you are only filing the white part (free edge) or you are filing into the skin (lateral fold). My clients never have any issues with side cracks
Hi There! We have it in the description box of the video :) However, to save you a couple of minutes. Erica Diamond Hand file (used here: "medium") bit.ly/3804Wi5 Thanks so much!
Lloret de Mar is a coastal resort town and great place to visit for vacations. We are 30 min from Girona airport :) in April the weather is quite nice already, I recommend:))
Sometimes it happens when people wear nail polish or gel (any type of coating really) for a while. Check out this clients progress here: ua-cam.com/video/XrdP63OfDYk/v-deo.html
My problem is when I look at my nails from different angles, they seem uneven. Example: looking at my fingers stretched out (palm down) they look even, then fingers curled toward me (palm up) they look uneven and visa versa, so I am always trying to correct the shape in each direction and file too short. I find if I just focus on fingers stretched out, palm down, I am more successful. Also I get hung up on getting the whites to look even across the tip of the nail and must remind myself, they don’t grow that way and just wear opaque polish.
Sometimes shaping with nail polish on is easier :) And don't worry too much, it's normal that nails are not perfectly symmetrical. And no-one really is as close to your nails as you are :)
Unpolished nails for sure are more dry. That is why it's usually recommended to remove polish when people deal with onycholysis. Nail polish raises moisture level in the nails. Unpolished nails absorb water but that water quickly evaporates too.
Clipper can shatter some nails. Filing doesn't bother me, it also doesn't bother the clients. On the other hand many people find the sound of clipping the nails very bothersome. High risk of the nails flying though the room ending up on others people's laps or mouths (lol, I've seen it!!!). Filing is safer ;)
I have been told or read throughout my life not to file going back-and-forth and not to file the sides of your nail. But I see you doing both and you say that the nails overtime become healthier. This is a new revelation to me.
Yes I would love to know this too

Here is a video I made explaining how to work with it

Yes I noticed that
My nails are different lengths. Should I clip them all to 1 length or file them? I have never had long nails before and so amazed at the longer ones, I hate to shorten them, but different length look weird.
I like to file because clipping sometimes can crack the nails :) I agree, different length does not look best... :)
I always make my ring fingers shorter to match the white part as same as the others when I file I hate it
Do you have any advice on a receding nail bed?
Interesting! Was that Loreal polish? One time I used it and it stained horribly.

what is key to growing the nail bed? I have a few nails that are quite uneven or to 'deep' where the bed should be. Thanks, R.
Hi ! Thank you for your content ❤
I wonder if it is ok to apply nail polish without base coat? I find that it holds much longer with just a top coat. I use Dior, Essie and Isadora nail polishes. With their original top coats
Hi Yulia! You might get more staining without a base coat especially if your nails are more porous or you are polishing with darker polishes.
What kind of nail file are you using in the video? I use a glass file as heard it helps seal the nail edge and reduce splitting. (Not sure if that's right though). You make it look so easy and quick. It takes me hours to properly shape mine! Lol.
Check description please. I’m going to make a video about files next week. Glass files do not seal anything. It’s all marketing :l
Do you have any other videos of the natural nail changing shape?
Hi may i know if what grit Numbers should use of filing nails likely used.
I started to polish my nails daily for the past handful of months, and now that I'm looking at my fingers, they do seem a bit more curved. Moreso on my right hand than left hand, weirdly enough, considering I tend to use my right hand more than my left
Interesting huh? Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
I prefer to trim my nails with clippers rather than filing ,I find filing makes my nails split horizontally and break more easily
Side cracks are usually a sign of nails that are too brittle or too damaged.
I’m curious which nail file are you using? And which grit number do you use for shaping natural nails?
Hi There! We have it in the description box of the video :) However, to save you a couple of minutes. Erica Diamond Hand file (used here: "medium") bit.ly/3804Wi5 Thanks so much!
What nail file do you recommend?
Vey nice ❤
Hello! I love your channel! It’s so informative and helpful. I would love to visit your salon, where is it? 😄
Thank you MM. We are located in Spain, in Lloret de Mar, near Barcelona :)
That’s a long way from Norway! If I’m ever on vacation in Barcelona I will definitively try to see if I can get an appointment 😄
Lloret de Mar is a coastal resort town and great place to visit for vacations. We are 30 min from Girona airport :) in April the weather is quite nice already, I recommend:))
Do you measure the length of each nail and make them all same?
Is it possible to change where the white part of the nail starts on the nail bed?
Sometimes it happens when people wear nail polish or gel (any type of coating really) for a while. Check out this clients progress here:

What nail file are you using? I bought the glass nail files, but don’t love them; seems like they barely do anything!
Please check the description box under the video for more info :)

@@TheSalonLife - good points. Thank you!
Hi! Do you have any online classes for licensed professionals? I've been looking for some classes to take.
Unpolished nails absorb moisture causing the shape to be flat.
Unpolished nails for sure are more dry. That is why it's usually recommended to remove polish when people deal with onycholysis.
Nail polish raises moisture level in the nails.
Unpolished nails absorb water but that water quickly evaporates too.
I’ve got these nails and they chip and split. Can you help?
Hi Lynn! Yes :) www.thesalonlife.ca/services
Why not use a clipper and then file? You use the file throughout…
