  • Hello, You’re very welcome to this video on Pinning FJR Panniers
There have been occasions when the side cases on the FJR1300 have become detached while riding, especially after hitting a bump or deformity in the road. This is costly! So, today, we’re looking at Pinning the FJR Panniers.
If you do the basic install, the whole job should take about 15 minutes from start to finish. It is not difficult, you just need to drill two holes in the correct place. A One Spanner Rating.
If, like me, you have rear crash bars, decide to paint the Clevis Pins and add Heat Shrink Tubing to protect the motorcycle’s paintwork, the job may then take a couple of hours or so depending on how long it takes the paint to dry.
There is no lighting in the garage, so the video footage was very grainy and not usable. Luckily, pictures were taken of each step using a mobile phone with a flash. This video is a montage of those pictures.
    Steps:
    1. Optional - Paint Clevis Pins
    2. Remove Rear Crash Bars if fitted
    3. Offer up drill to the side case and place a lot of Masking Tape on the Panniers where the drill touches
    4. Glue Rubber Stays back in place if necessary
    5. Optional - Drill a small pilot hole centred 7mm from the long flat side of the case support and centred between the two ribs
    6. Drill the hole through the case supports and rubber stays (centred 7mm from the long flat side of the case support and centred between the two ribs)
    7. Optional - Cut Heat Shrink Tubes to size 95mm (4 5/8") long
    8. Optional - Spray small amount of White Grease into the heat Shrink Tubes and slide them onto the Round Wire loops on the Clevis Pins
    9. Optional - Shrink the Heat Shrink tube with a heat gun
    10. Insert the Clevis Pins
Some links are affiliate links, there is no additional cost to you but this channel will get a little commission to help towards its upkeep.
The minimum you need to do the job is two 55mm x 6mm (2¼” x ¼”) Clevis Pins, a 7mm (5/16”) drill bit and a drill.

But if you want to protect the paintwork you’ll also need some heat shrink tube 95mm x 9.5mm (4⅝” x ⅝”) and a method to shrink it.

Use some Masking tape or similar to protect the cases while drilling.

To help slide the heat shrink tube onto the clip, use a little white grease, this will also minimise oxidation. A little goes a long way.
    amzn.to/3d4vGTZ
You can also paint the Clevis Pins before attaching the heat shrink tubing so they blend in to the bodywork.

Before drilling, place the drill in the correct position so you know where to attach the masking tape.
The centre of the hole is 7mm from the “bottom” of the case attachment and centred between the two ridges - see video.
Don’t drill into the metal. Drill slightly up and to the rear. You’ll find the drill naturally wants to be in that position due to the shape of the pannier.
    Some tips:
    • Remove the rear crash bars, if fitted, before drilling.
    • Drill the cases in situ.
    • Drill a small pilot hole if necessary to guide the drill bit.
(I didn’t and you can see the hole is a little off-centre)
    • The rubber stays could be loose, glue them back into place before drilling or they may not line up with the holes you drilled. (DAMHIK).
    • Use a lot of masking tape.
    • Don’t drill into the metal.
I hope that’s been useful. Thanks for watching. Please Like, Comment and Subscribe. See you next time.

Yep the culprit are the two small screws holding the locking gate onto the lock cylinder. I used my bags this week and when i went to take them off one the bacs lock cylinder came out with the key. when i examined the lock i found one small screw and the locking gate floating around the top of the bag. went to the hardware store and purchased a #3 x 6 mm metric screw and Loctite. problem solved. This also happened on my super tenere top box.

Put a little blue loctite on the threads (as per the manual) and they shouldn't come loose again. It's surprising how many garages don't read the instructions prior to installing stuff then wonder why it "fails"

If you latch them correctly they will never fall off. It’s rider error

And the one day something distracts you and you don't? Your panniers, your money, your choice.

Not necessary. Just make sure that when you lock them to actually look and make sure its locked!

Check the screws that hold the pannier locks.
If these loses up and fall out, the lock will detach, leaving the bags un-secured.
These screws should be secured with loctite but it seems not all dealers do this when installing.
Mine were 50% loose so check the lock-screws asap if you have not done so. See example video on TwoWheelObsession if it does not make sense.

Just recently there have been a spate of reports of the panniers falling off. It seems that the plastic "tongue" which slots into the frame is wearing and not engaging fully even though the lock returns to the detente position. It engages sufficiently to give the impression that it is secure but, a hard enough bump is dislodging the pannier.
A few minutes of your time and little cost may save you a large expense later.
