Rider Ramblings at Bike Farkles
United Kingdom
Приєднався 5 лис 2019
Having ridden over 250,000 miles (400,000 km) in the UK and Europe on motorcycles since 1983 and worked as a Dispatch Rider in London, we serviced and repaired our motorcycles every Saturday and rode in and around London Monday to Friday. I commuted to work for over 14 years, more than 125,000 miles, on a trusty Honda Deauville (NT700VA). Currently I ride a Yamaha FJR1300AE. I don't own a car
Rider Ramblings discusses both daily events and motorcycles filmed and and narrated while riding through interesting scenery
Rider Ramblings is about everything to do with motorcycles. It doesn’t focus or any one part. It will try to show you how to do things and give you information about “the why” as well. At the same time discussing daily (motorcycling) life as well.
From accessories to enhance your ride, to training to enhance your skills and pleasure, to travel and places to visit. We’ll include entertaining and informative videos to help you.
It’s great to have you along for the ride.

Riding in a Torrential Rain Storm - Rider Ramblings 181
Переглядів 472 місяці тому
Starting in medium rain the Heavens open and the roads, in places, turn into small rivers. The camera doesn't do justice to the full force of the rain. There is no commentary, just the sound of the engine, the rain on the Helmet and traffic. The rain turns into a torrential downpour at ~2:35 and becomes progressively heavier... 👍 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲: ua-cam.com/video/ie_d_850Qb4/v-d...

Confusing New Rider Videos & Information. Repairing Plastic
There won't be many folk peeling off in this weather 🤣🤣🤣 We had a lot of rain last night and the wind has got up but my part of the world s fine for now and perfect approach to riding in the winter. I managed to get out on NT yesterday to stretch the lasses legs and great it was too.
No idea on any dji wares I am afraid, By all accounts there good!, what tyres will you for? Road 5/6? When you say not riding for a while at you playing the up until spring?
I'll still be riding and doing a Vlog, just not as regularly. It will all be weather dependent.
I have both the DJI Mic and the Mic 2, which I use with different camera systems. I haven't yet tried the Mic Mini though. I wish I'd known you might have a need for a Morgan Carbtune Pro - you could have borrowed mine and taken it back with you.
That's really kind of you. If I haven't done it by the time I come over again, I'll take you up on that. It's only about a half hour job on the FJR which can be done by the side of the road (weather permitting). Where I want to buy the camera, doesn't have it in stock. As it is winter time, I'm prepared to wait and support a local business.
You're more than welcome if the job can wait until you are next over.
If you are buying a DJI camera then the mic mini is a no brainer as the mic connects directly to the camera without a receiver meaning everything is waterproof. I plan to get the mic mini because one thing I have learnt about this vlogging lark is to stick to the one eco system, everything just works better. I will ride all the way through winter, it would drive me nuts being off the bike for so long. Enjoy the break and see you at the other side.
I'll still be riding, just not on my regular weekly routine. As and when the weather permits.
I have gerbing ones lovely and comfy only faff is there wired but there brilliant , no touchscreen capability , did you get any snow recently? We have a storm Bert arriving tomorrow..
I used to have wired "silks" and they are a faff running the cables down your sleeves. I've been after a battery set for a while now and I am glad I have them. Yes, we got some snow, about 1" from storm Caetano. We also had a hard frost overnight so the pavements were a bit treacherous this morning. Storm Bert looks rather menacing!
@riderramblings I agree wires are a faff , being on the south coast we may just escape the worst reland Wales the midlands the south West and Scotland will get the brunt of it. (So say Michael fish, ha!) Any news on the garage? Ride safe on those squirmy Dunlops there..
A nice review and I found it very useful. I have some Merlin kit and think it is great quality. I am looking to buy heated gloves and it will probably be from Merlin. I will have a look around and what deals are being done. Cheers.
Do you wear heated gloves? If so, which ones do you use? Do you like them? What are the Pros and Cons? If you don't use heated gloves, and you live in a colder climate, is there a reason why you don't use them?
Believe it or not I was discussing this Passive Aggressive stuff with my wife just the other day. I always said what I meant and sometimes got me into trouble, especially in the last few years of my working life. I hated this dancing around the handbags all because folk did not want to hurt anyone's "feelings". I am getting wound up just thinking about it 🤣🤣🤣 My technical hands on work meant you had to be accurate giving instructions and misunderstandings could result in expensive rework, oh they were the days. I managed three large international IT services out sources for four years (I was the customer) and their service directors were always moaning to me about how I "treated" the rubbish they produced. Haha, I a dinosaur or what. Yeah you should do the piece if only to wind me up 🤣🤣🤣
I'll think about it... 🤣🤣🤣 I'll try and find a way to have a crib sheet available when I do it so I don't forget any.. I never played "office politics" and, in the past, have sacked a number of members of staff for doing so, especially when they've been passive aggressive.
Did they perform oil changes at the appropriate intervals during the test? Many stock passive-aggressive phrases come to mind, but I, for one, would welcome a refresher course. 😁
According to the video, I'll try and find it again and link to it, the servicing was done by the book. As I recall, they even used different driving styles (town, highway) on the vehicles. I'll have to see if I can attach a "cheat sheet" so I don't forget any to the bike when I do video. It may end up as a voice over if I make a pig's ear of it...
Would you be interested in a video on British Passive Aggressive expressions and their actual meaning? Let me know below...
There is far too much anger on the roads these days. The roads around my part of the world ruined due to cycle lanes so you not alone.
We don't have a "joined up transport system". The current system seems to be, "stuff the drivers". Those in cities and large towns want us to cycle or use public transport everywhere. They forget that public transport is rare to non-existent in rural areas and cycling, in some areas, is for professional athletes only.
I have indeed suffered when I was younger , I have also been a victim. Cars are faster than they used to be and people are more in a hurry now than they used to be.
I've never witnessed a full road rage incident, in the sense of it descending to violence or deliberate vandalism, but I have inevitably witnessed much brake checking, finger gesturing and similar on British roads in particular over the years.
I don't see as much brake checking as I thought I would on the ring roads around Paris. It seems to be quite rare, surprising for Latin drivers... People tend to drive aggressively anyhow so, maybe, they are expecting aggressive driving behaviour. Quite often see drivers racing down the inside and cutting into narrow spaces - quite a few very narrow misses!
Have you seen a Road Rage incident? Have you suffered from or been a victim of Road Rage? If so, please let us know in the comments
Thanks for the detailed overview. I was considering buying this model, and your video really helped!

Yes I suffer from it , I get very lethargic and unmotivated , the log burner helps my soul , I just get so disheartened with rain rain rain and gloom , it’s life in the northern hemisphere , I may try a lamp .. the link for the table lamp worked but the bulbs just to me to the Amazon homepage.
I have updated the link on the page so try it again. I would post the link here but I've turned off links in comments...
@ Thankyou that’s very kind
I entirely endorse your views on the benefits of daylight bulbs. I don't remember feeling as greatly affected by the lack of sunlight when younger as I do now. Probably because I'm now in my twilight years. 😄
Ha! Good one. I'll have to remember that...
Garage for me and my bikes, my mate bubbled his last year but was a faff to get in and out so he didn't ride for about 6 or 7 months and had serious skills fade . Now he has a diesel heater ( Chinese) and the roof insulated so he is hoping to be able to use it more this winter as hopefully there will be no moisture on it as his garage is cold and damp , good luck with the move my mate lives in blaye (probably spelt wrong) in or near the Gironde.
Get a small electric fan and set it on low speed. It stops the condensation (well it does in my garage) and is cheaper to run than a heater.
Jammy git, south of France eh 🤣🤣🤣 Wonderful riding weather for sure. My bikes are in a secure covered area with cotton sheets under Oxford bike covers. Works well for me and no chance of scratching from the Oxford cover.
Some of the roads in the South of France are truly amazing as well. Using old cotton sheets is a great idea!
Mine are kept in an unheated garage all year round under fitted 'dust' covers. In the country during autumn and winter, of course, you have to take precautions against the potential predations of mice, which manage to squeeze in through any small gap and can cause costly havoc if allowed to go unchecked.
Ah yes, les rongeus (rodents). Rodents are seen in our underground garage area fairly regularly. I use both strategically placed rat poison and _Dryer sheets._ I also place Dryer sheets under the seat of the bike and in the fairing pocket and change them every autumn. Seems to have worked so far... Not too keen on the niff though!
I prefer "Little Nipper" mouse traps primed with offcuts of Snicker bars. Irresistible and instantly lethal.
All year rider except when it rains or when our roads are salted also I don't deal with cold weather very well.
I don't think many of us handle the cold well these days 😊
I ride all year round but since it now for leisure then won't go out if weather is bad. I have ridden in every month of the year for past 5 plus years since I came back to biking. My go to bike in poor weather is the nc750x but all three bikes get ridden. The bike gets washed after every ride over the winter period plus use similar products as mentioned and so far no rust or signs of rust on any of the bikes.
There seems to be a theme here 😁Look after and wash your bikes regularly and you have fewer problems. Now, who would have thought it? 🤔🤣🤣 In our area, they don't usually use salt on the roads, just grit. That helps a lot!
I ride all year, I usually like you, used to have a bike for the naff weather and pick the days for the good bike in the winter , being an observer we are expected to be able to ride to most conditions, I do draw the line when the roads are gritted ,or less than about -6 again ok when there white and dry but no if it’s wet and the salty muck is flying everywhere, I do avoid those condition because then I am into major cleaning , and most definitely a cold rinse when I get home , I am considering a second bike at the moment, funnily enough another deau because I love them so much. I don’t commute I have a van I am in the building trade so for me other than the IAM it’s just for pleasure , I have ridden in falling snow many times in my 250 majesty , (small wheels) but was fine ridden with respect for the conditions. I ride to my mums (she thought I was mad) ha! Thanks again for the video 👍 settled here next week with high pressure holding 👍👍 may even get a few rides in , oh I am also training to become a national observer moving on from the now soon to be obsolete local observer .. there looking for continuity amongst the observers in the iam, can’t blame them but that means more training and more tests … pah..: and it voluntary ! but I will get another nationally recognised qualification from the imi i suppose . Bye for now , Geoff
I managed -21°C a few years ago. The roads were dry so off I went. My body was OK. My hands? A very different story even with heated grips! Over here they don't usually use salt, just grit, so the bikes get filthy but you don't have to worry so much about corrosion.
@@riderramblings blimey -21! Wow 😲! Thanks for the reply 😊
It depends..... I have owned a zh2 and it was an absolutely magnificent bike to ride , smooth fuelling and a real pussy cat (if you want it to be) twist the wrist to mush and it was absolutely amazing. It made you feel really alive and laugh out loud . With great power comes great responsibility, I also loved my 700 deauville for different reasons ..for me a road engine needs to have torque and not to "busy" at motorway speeds . Inline 4 high powered bikes need to be revved more to get to peak power (unless it's supercharged) 😅 the rider controls the speed , big torque wins for the road , ps raining again here and there's chatter of out first named storm of the season this weekend ... Great video .. oh I also had a 125 innova which I loved and a few x adv 750s which I also loved
Wonder of wonders but, according to the weather forecast, next week's run outs may be in the dry. I hope "Ashley" doesn't cause too much disruption.
Often when I've been two up, full of luggage on a European tour, the FJRs power is perfect, since you still want to feel like you're on a motorcycle afterall and enjoy the power when it's safe to do so. I remember touring on a VFR800 and while I loved the bike, it just didn't have enough grunt for serious touring. I think a good power and torque curve / delivery is most important, as well as training the right hand. While I do miss my Blackbirds top end rush, I feel the FJR has a perfect balance of speed and comfort. Cheers.
I haven't toured with anyone on the pillion, but I have taken a pillion passenger through the Paris traffic - her first time on the pillion with me. Due to the power of the FJR and the fact that she probably weighed less than 50 kg dripping wet, I didn't notice any difference.
I think you make a perfectly valid point about hp in relation to touring bikes, but one has to ask whether there is a point beyond which extra hp offers nothing more than the ability to go faster. In other words, what is the use case for hp exceeding, say, 150? Glad to see you got a relatively dry commute on this occasion.
To a certain extent, I think the hp and torque should take into account the weight of the vehicle. The Gods have smiled upon me this week as I have had two dry trips "East" this week. I doubt it will last...
I had a Honda VFR 1200F that had 170bhp and only ABS, no other aids and it was fine, it how you use the throttle that the issue. I never ever used more than a fraction of the power. The 100bhp on my NT is perfect for me and agree with you point on bigger bikes for touring. My NC had something like 65bhp and is certainly plenty enough, even on the motorways.
You are spot on about the use of the right hand!
How much is too much Horsepower? Should the Horsepower of bikes be limited? If so, to what figure? Should the weight of the bike be considered if limiting the horsepower? The heavier the bike, the higher the limit? Let us know your thoughts.
It not great and sometimes you get caught out. The big bikes certainly helps when the rain that bad. My last three trips have had pretty bad weather. Getting off the Norway to Denmark ferry and it was awful, I got caught in Shetland but the worse was Orkney. Ferries were cancelled due to the storm and even next day one of ship hands asked where I was heading. He could believe how far I was going in that weather. I posted a couple of vids in the rain.
Rain is a fact of life for us unfortunately. Over the years I have learnt what works and what doesn't work to keep you dry. But it is only recently that I have found truly waterproof gloves.
Blimey, that was a properly wet ride wasn't it? The bike seems very smooth in low gear, fortunately. Hopefully, your wet weather gear stood up to it alright.
Believe it or not the only problem was the helmet. I had to keep cracking the visor open as it was steaming up even with a pinlock. A lot of rain then ran down the inside of the visor. Oh, and the neck roll of the helmet got soaked. You probably noticed that I didn't give the bike "the beans"😁
I did. But in view of your previous remarks on the wet weather performance of the tyres, I wasn't surprised.
@@LenScapoff One thing I noticed is that the fork oil needs replacing - the front suspension was a bit spongy. Just braking to a stop with the rear the front was dipping. The oil has done about 32,000 km which is, for me, about 12,000 km past it's service interval. If you haven't used Michelins you would be happy with the tyres. The Michelins, in the wet, are on another level. As I crossed the level crossing the back stepped out slightly on the rails. I felt it but the TCS light didn't flash. 🤔
Oh my goodness me that was bouncing off the road! Rivers n all ! Well ridden 👍 thanks for sharing the fjr coped admirably with the weather to
Nope no simmer here as you have also experienced as said in your last video when you where in the shires , I have not even felt the need to remove the winter wheels … we will not get one now , it’s waaaay to late , however closer to the equator the summer was possibly hotter than normal. I went to Spain actually counter Spain and it was like a frying pan …. Almost unbearable in early August .. heard to hoping for next year. Any yes I did love frank Spencer 😂.
Never mind no summer this year, it was same for last year 😒 Lots of rain like everywhere else. But, I was very lucky when in Norway, lots of sun but not so lucky on mainland Europe. Thanks for the mention and great to hear you enjoyed. You really do need to go to Norway, it is superb for bikers.
We've had nothing but rain apart from in August, where we did get some decent sunshine. Always enjoy your rider ramblings on the mighty FJR. Take care.
The next one, which I am rendering at the moment, made me wonder whether 149 hp was a good idea..
We've had the odd week when the weather was reasonable, but otherwise the Summer was a damp squib. So far, October has proved far colder than normal too.
Yes, wandering along the coast on Mersea Island after a good lunch was a tad windy and chilly for August! 😁
Great video , very insightful , to find an actual pair of waterproof gloves is something to behold! I am going to try my held goretex again with my cuffs over my gloves and report back next time it’s raining (wont be long) ha! In the winter I use my heated gerbing gloves which I absolutely love no there not waterproof well it takes a while for the water to permeate , but ever so warm as in each finger is warm ! Tips n all 😂 I’m not a commuter I may add , just pleasure and as you know the odd iam observed ride. The held ones do not work with a touch screen but the Gerbing ones seem to (85 percent of the time) not ideal … and there are no pads on them. The only thing with the Gerbing is connecting the gloves to the harness out of your sleeves , or cuffs if you also have the heated vest , it’s a small price to pay to have the warmth if I was to be honest in the balance of things . Take care , Geoff
Got caught in an absolute deluge today with rivers running down the streets. Hopefully the camera has caught it. The whole 45 minute ride was very wet with about 10 minutes of torrential rain in the middle. My hands were dry when I got home as my over-jacket was over the cuffs. Impressed with the gloves. My nylon waterproof over-jacket leaked a little as did my over-trousers though nothing to worry about. If the camera caught it and the video is usable, I'll put it up on Wednesday.
@@riderramblings I’d love to see that , I know there has been some very heavy rain coming in from the Atlantic a spin off from the vile storms I do feel the jet stream may have pushed it further south than us I think we have been lucky here in Sussex to a certain extent , I do hope the footage is usable I’d be interested to see it 👍 I’m installing a Chinese diesel heater in the coming days to help with the ever increasing energy bills … so it may be futile or it could be a game changer … will see … anyhow thanks again for the video I do enjoy your Channel 👍
The problem with driver aids is they make poor drivers think they have way more skill than they actually have. I was out the front of my house the other day when a young lad who lives across the road from me reversed his car into the front of his house, his parents were not best pleased and there is now a crack down the rendered wall although it cheered me up 🤣🤣🤣He drives the car like he is on a race track. I live close to the local driving test centre and going by what I observe, the quality of driver training is very poor so not sure about refresher courses. I see so many poor driving habits these learners are doing under instruction that they undoubtable take into their driving. One particular rant of mine is lane discipline is pretty bad from so many drivers these days. Maybe I just getting old haha.
100% agree with the refresher course, driving standards are worefully bad here and the traffic up at least 40% in my area due to massive building booms and overcrowded frustrated people in roads in cars which are ever faster. So yes I totally agree with that , slow down in built up areas raise your vision and plan. As for rider aids yes , I have had few bikes which are to intrusive with the abs killing the feel at the lever , I like the 6 axis imu I have on my bike, it’s amazing, some rider aids should not be leant on to much if pushing on but some bikes need them , I had a 200bhp supercharged Kawasaki and without rider aides I would imagine it would be very unsafe and I’d want my mummy a lot 💩 😂. Cheers for the video , I am hoping to ride soon it’s been a few weeks for me now ..
The FJR is the first bike I have had over 100 hp and, due to her weight, she has a similar performance to my old CBR600 (no aids what-so-ever) but with a higher top speed. I haven't "used" the ABS on the FJR though, the TCS did kick in once (unnecessarily) pulling away from traffic lights in the wet on OEM Bridgestone tyres (terrible tyres in the wet - no grip at all).
I'm not a huge fan of driver aids, tbh. I never use cruise control, for instance, even though I've had it on all my cars since the late 90s, although I do appreciate the reversing camera on my current VW. Refresher course - I think the resources needed to meet any compulsory requirement would exceed anything that was practicable in terms of time and expense given the vast number of people it would involve. It would quickly become more notable for adding to the catalogue of fraud than for improving driving standards, imo.
Cruise Control is probably the only aid I use and usually when there are a lot of tax cameras. So mainly motorways.
Had a few questionable ABS experiences too. My Tracer has pretty strong engine braking so bringing that into the mix helps a lot.
What do you think about mandatory Rider and Driver Refresher courses? Are they necessary? What skills should be refreshed? How would they work?
I have a Purple Panda lavalier mic in my Neotec, fitted on the opposite side from the boom mic for the Sena Mesh. On my J-Cruise, I have a tiny Sony lavalier which I have tucked inside the dead cat of the intercom boom mic. Both arrangements seem to work satisfactorily.
I'll have a look at those. I was hoping to connect the Sena SRL2 via Bluetooth to the camera. I note that 2 cameras I am looking at allow this, but they are second and fourth on my list. Unfortunately, all the cameras on the market today have a "flaw". Whether it's overheating, crashing regularly, lack of screen protector, poorly implemented Bluetooth or something else. This is why I have held off so long: waiting for one of the major players to build a camera features everyone needs. Ah, pipe dreams!
Retirement is a wonderful thing, especially when it come to motorbikes. Leisurely rides are the name of the game.
I sometimes have to go somewhere (which I currently have to do twice a week for the next 7 weeks) but I can leave with sufficient time to have a leisurely ride. Unfortunately, so far it has rained each time and more rain is forecast for next week...
@@riderramblings Aye, the weather been rubbish here as well, seems to rain just about everyday.
Hello from wet and windy blighty.. yes... great video of which i do appreciate. Re gloves, I have a pair of very expensive held gloves. I was told they are goretex waterproof . That's utter horses do do as they are not! And they have not yielded in size so still too tight, and... they have no screen fingerbobs on.. so basically utterly useless ... do you remember fingerbobs? Anyhow I also have another heated German gerbing gloves which are gorgeous for comfort but not fingerbobs and not waterproof. So I can not recommend any alternatives. Motorcycle equipment seems to live in the dark ages compared to car tech. I'm off on the bike tomorrow (sunny day forecasted!!) Visit a customer/glazing query and then a family member to visit.
I found that gloves 1 size too big usually suits me especially when trying to put wet hands into them! I think the Furygan gloves are the 1st pair of gloves I've had in over 40 years that are actually waterproof. There are some caveats, the main one being not to let water get into the cuffs. I do this by putting them over my main jacket and *under* the waterproof over-jacket (which can be a struggle). I haven't tested my full winter Gore-Tex gloves in the rain as it's usually dry, though below about 3°C, when I wear them. I'll report on the Heated Gloves once I've had a chance to try them out.
@@riderramblings having the cuffs over has occurred to me … il re try and report back , thanks for the info , keep the videos coming I really enjoy them , I really should join the foray
Excellent, thank you 👍
For me, i watch very many reviews and form my own opinion on stuff as they produce a pattern. I have a insta 360 and love it for my very few subjective needs and its brilliant for other than motorcycle filming. For video blog for you, i would go for the DJI 400. Also, why don’t you wait for the sales or Amazon huge sale as they are bound to be reduced…👌
an excellent idea. I believe Amazon are having a sale in October, so I will probably but it then.
I agree i have learnt over the years these dummy’s don’t give an honest review , I have bought motorbikes before with blindingly obvious issues which “influencers” have negated to mention and its cost me big time. Good luck the new camera , looking forward to seeing new footage , I don’t do vlogging I don’t have enough time to dedicate to a) doing it and b)editing it l. But no I repel them and take little influence from them.
