As far as I know delta time dependency is actually the polar opposite of what you have said. Games are processed in frames, every frame a character may gain constant speed. However if the speed it gains is constant, then when a game is run at higher frames per second, then the character accelerates faster since there are more frames in a second where is speed added. This is where delta time dependency comes in, basically saying to just multiply the added speed by deltaTime(the time in between this and the last frame). That way the results are consistent between all FPS values. This is a simple case where a value that depends on deltaTime was not properly calculated, they simply missed multiplying by the deltaTime. This was not an intentional choice, but a mistake that very very inexperienced developers make often, or experienced programmers with improper developer tools.

Some corrections about Delta time dependency: 1) The explanation given in the video is partially wrong. Minecraft's tick rate is one example of this. 2) Having things tied to frame rate is something all games have to patch OUT. Not patch IN. DTD is the default and it has to be fixed. you got it half right, deltatime dependency is how you AVOID your FPS from changing how the game functions (delta means usually the difference, so in the case the time difference between frames). The problem is actually that gear box did NOT use delta time, so there is distinction between frames that have 0.05 seconds between them and 2 minutes. They work differently because deltatime was NOT used in any of the calculations.
I have never had the time or money to buy and play risk of rain, so I didn't, expecting it to be around for me to get later, but now that's gone. Absolutely depressing.
your explanation of delta time is so bad that it really hurts the video. *for anyone interested, here's an ACTUAL explanation of the bug:* by default (specifically in unity), these kinds of value changes are applied every frame. it's an extra step to then MULTIPLY the change in value by deltatime to standardize it across frame rates, and then that implementation changes depending on HOW the change in value is applied in the first place. it's not a deliberate design choice, like you suggested. it's a bug caused by a coding oversight. please do more research if you're going to talk about game dev topics like this, or else it's just misinformation.
Commando's grenades physics we're affected by the FPS glitch as well, with uncapped frame-rates resulting in my grenades bouncing halfway across the map
exactly a month ago i bought ror2 because most of my friends had been constantly playing it. it quickly became one of my most favourite games and i was playing it for a few hours each day. havent touched it since the update.
Multiplying by delta time does the polar opposite of what you said, it makes things move the same speed, regardless of fps. They messed up and removed it, its already a dumb, kinda inexcusable mistake to forget it but adding it post release is a special kind of bad.
true, wanted to point that out as well but despite him leading with that one the followups were totally fugged. Loader's grapple being affected by frame rate is hilarious
i feel like this is the one situation where blaming the individual devs is Dumb because they were hired by a company to work on something they Had no idea how to work with. (the devs that were hired literally did not know how to use unity at all and had to do everything in a different engine, then port it over) of course that Fucked it up but it's not their fault. you get told to build a house and the only tool you know how to use is a power saw then you're probably not gonna do it Smoothly.
The fact they probably only playtested 10 minutes on a playstation is depressing, if they even for a second tried to playtest on xbox they would have realised it is literally unplayable
When borderlands 2, the presquel, and EVEN BORDERLANDS 3 released on PC, I still held beliefs gearbox were top tier quality game publishers... This shattered that illusion: They are just as fucking terrible, if not worse, than bethesda.
3:36 That's not true. It was always like that. The game's FPS always mattered. Uncapping a game's FPS after its made is literally one of the hardest things in game development. This isn't an excuse for gearbox, as they just shouldn't've done this.
some thing i have not seen any one talk about is the actual amount of content you get for the same price. both games are the same but the amount you get is wildly different. In SOV you got 2 new survivors (and 2 skins to go with them), 5 new stages, void seeds, 3 new bosses, 11 normal enemies, two new (and cool) elite types, and 41 new items, many of witch are staples in almost any build. In SOS we got 3 new survivors each with only one skin and did not get a new skin for killing the new boss for some reason, 13 skins for the old survivors, 6 new stages, some new night variants, 1 new artifact, 3 new monsters, only 1 new boss, the Halcyon shrine, shrine of shaping, 2 new elites (one that is annoying to kill the other just kills you), and only 17 items. in terms of new survivors, skins, and new stages seekers of the storm wins. in terms of items, enemies, bosses, (you know the things that are core to the game play) Survivors of the void blow this new DLC out of the water. If i could i would love to turn the dlc off and keep the stages and music that go with it.
i pretty sure most of the bug problems we've all experienced in the update can all be sourced from the higher ups like take two interactive wanting the dlc to be released now to see immediate profit to appease their investors even though the devs ACTUALLY working/fixing the game told them it wasnt done yet, just classic corporate BS that every good developer seems to go through nowadays
Correction: While your explanation of deltaTime is correct, "deltaTime dependency" would not make the game speed up with a higher framerate and would actually make it independent of framerate. What you're describing would be a lack of or incorrect deltaTime implementation. To elaborate, let's say you move the player by 1 unit each frame. After 60 frames, the player will have moved 60 units. If your movement vector is instead dependent on deltaTime, you'd need to wait 60 seconds for the player to move 60 units as multiplying by deltaTime will turn "1 unit per frame" into "1 unit per second". TL;DR - The issue here is not deltaTime dependency, but rather a lack of deltaTime dependency.
Remember: the original creators of Risk of Rain willingly sold the IP to Gearbox after getting everyone's money. Do not support anything they make in the future.
Man I heard the DLC was bad but I didnt realise it was this bad but hey look on the bright side, apparently a bunch of hopoo devs got hired by valve so valve might make a game like risk of rain in the future
if you lived in sweden you could sue gearbox for making the game unplayable and they would have to either give you a full refund, give you a downpatched copy or fix the game. but only if you have owned the game for more than three years
I refunded the DLC, I’ll think about buying it when the game is in a playable state. It looks like the RoR2 community is starting to warm up but the fact this happened in the first place is something you can’t undo, the damage is done and so are potentially thousands of players
5:37 Calling this intentional is the biggest lie you could ever say. The game didn't have adjustable framerate before gearbox for a reason. They didn't use delta time.

They fixed Acrid and Loader... that made me happy, yet minutes after starting a multiplayer game, the host got stuck in place when starting stage 2 while the rest of us could move, I could interact with command essences but not my friends (while not being host) and I had to open and select all items for the two of us (host still stuck, also received no damage), moments later, the only one that could move at all was me, enemies also didn't move, then by next stage, we were like?? instanced? we appeared on the next stage, the host could move as well, my other friend got disconnected in a couple more minutes and then the rest of us could NOT see each other. First and only run before we decided to downgrade again. Also something happened with steam invites? one of us could press the button like normal to join from steam, while we had to copy and paste the lobby code, must've been a steam issue though.
Oh and also Acrid's leap was only somewhat fixed, sometimes while jumping on top of an enemy, you would be propelled either upwards or in front of you with no additional input. Same for epidemic, it still does nothing sometimes or only jumps a couple times.
I wiĺl say that the bug where items spawn directly into the abyss isn't new to this update - legacy of the void introduced it. I have no idea if its frequency was changed with this update though

What about the best item in the game? Antler Shield goes crazy, taking 500 damage from Mithrix then maybe reflecting back 50 back to him when he has like 100,000hp 🤩
1:10 That one has been in the game since forever tbf
Not exactly. It used to happen during RoR2's early access, then Hopoo Games partially patched it (not fully because they thought it was funny) and from there onward it could only happen to 3D Printers. Now thanks to Gearbox it can now happen again with anything that drops an item
yeah not really. It was there in the early game but hopoo fixed it so it could only happen on printers, but now thanks to gearbox it's back. It's nothing game breaking but it is still pretty annoying
it still happens to me I personally don't agree to top 2 comments. (even before update)
@@fv4202x wdym you don't agree, it's literally a fact that they had it patched out for everything other than printers
@@kingcobraarchie well, it was still happening before dlc :/
Oh boy, Randy’s doing another magic trick to make a franchise disappear
luckily we are survivors of deltatime and have stopped being seekers of deltatime
can devs please stop selling their games to companys 😭
God forbid the devs sell an IP to earn a generational sum of money for all their hard work, also allowing them to work on other projects instead of devoting their life to the one that blew up. How dare they.
@@user-ph9pm6fc7g They work for Valve now. They're salaried.
@@user-ph9pm6fc7g you say that as if they made a good choice lmao, its always like this, they have chicken that gives golden eggs, but they either decide to kill it finding no gold inside, or sell it away for easy quick profit.
if you made a good game, and can get good profit off it in the long term, why sell it away for quick cash ?
The current state of ror2 is really poor. I wonder what would happen if there was a game very similar to this one, with the same assumptions, mechanics and characters, but with 2D graphics and minigames.
Im gonna hold your hand when i say this...
there are literally two 2d risk of rain titles by hopoo
nobody is getting the joke of the comment lol
When people say game difficulty is tied to fps, they mean the director and enemies, not the difficulty scaling, but the enemies spawn and attack more frequently
The difficulty is definetly affected a elder Lemarion spawned on the third stage
You explaining the twisted elite enemies is the same reason why they had to nerf malachite
4:10 SOMEONE forgot to multiply be deltatime. multiple times. 🤦♂
DLC with issues is to be expected. A DLC with _this many issues_ … wow the RoR2 players are gonna have problems. Also fucking gearbox?? And you’re fucking surprised???
How does a dlc break the rest of the game as well?
It's been 10 days give devs some time to fix stuff thet clearly want the game to be better.
People act like sotv wasn't bug ridden either or had bad decisions
@@bobertastic6541 there was a patch released alongside the dlc that most of these bugs are from
It's honestly crazy to me how many people defend seeker and then dislike the other two, all the while there's others that like false son or chef and do the same thing, guys maybe the characters are balanced if there's so many people both liking and disliking the characters and it's just a playstyle preference (also false son is genuinely so fun people who complain about them literally either don't know how to charge the laser or don't know how to charge the m2 slam)
Howdy partner and i just wanted to say becareful buddy chris has copyright striked people who use his music i had a friend who did a full ost once that didn't go so well for my friend sadly. so stay safe partner
btw Take 2 are also the people responsible for KSP 2's current state
The one thing they needed to do was not make an update that made EVERYTHING break. How did they manage to screw up this badly… how did they make some items normally supposed to be useful become horribly detrimental, how did they make the existing survivors broken and buggy, HOW did they break the game so much that you might lose your save data, this is unbelievable
all of this doesn't mention that over 2 years worth of mods also no longer work, and maybe modders in the community haven't updated their mods since 2022. i personally won't play on the newer versions of ROR2 because of this
how can i get my ROR2 to the last previous bug free, mod working stage ?, only choice is to pirate it ?
2:15 a Small correction, The heretic thing doesnt actually have to be on heretic, it can just happen. I played with my friend not knowing shit about the dlc and he got this bug where the echo just kept stacking, making him IMMUNE to any dmg but not only could he not interact with anything, he also was on a timer cause the dmg would eventually scale so high he would just flop down and die. It was funny tho
Uncapped Fps bugs sounds like something from old games
This bug really sucks
Didn't expect we would revert to times when some games broke if you disable the 30fps limit
Chris does not, in fact, miss
Risk of Rain 2 is now the EasyBib of gaming.
I played the update a couple days after the DLC came out, we only found 1 bug… and it was the god mythrix bug, really fun after an hour long run
choosing console code over pc code had to be some kind of prank pulled from a time manipulating being
I wish the developers just had said "this is the final update no more" and left. Like that would have been way better than this.
as the lead dev said of hopoo games "what did they do to my boy"
I was suspicious the moment Gearbox bought the IP and revealed they were gonna make a mobile game of Risk of Rain. Glad to see my suspicions founded.
chris dont miss also extends to Larkin
I hope that take two won't push gearbox into sending out borderlands 4 unfinished too for the same reason...
we all know they will, thats how big corpos do, and i fear for gta 6 too...
@@foodaah at least for gta 6 we had trailers and at least something tangible to look at the gameplay, as for borderlands 4 we just know it's coming out, hope they reveal something soon, i don't want them to ruin such a beautiful saga
the only good thing about this dlc is that they hired chris to make the music
Lol gear box be like
Tone up Loader’s ultimate ability noise and then fuck her up that will do it
Before the patch even the item count was false, I truly belive they didn't test it at all.
Wow gearbox sucks who could have seen this coming
you got it half right, deltatime dependency is how you AVOID your FPS from changing how the game functions (delta means usually the difference, so in the case the time difference between frames).
*for anyone interested, here's an ACTUAL explanation of the bug:*
by default (specifically in unity), these kinds of value changes are applied every frame. it's an extra step to then MULTIPLY the change in value by deltatime to standardize it across frame rates, and then that implementation changes depending on HOW the change in value is applied in the first place.
it's not a deliberate design choice, like you suggested. it's a bug caused by a coding oversight.
please do more research if you're going to talk about game dev topics like this, or else it's just misinformation.
Gearbox got cooked so that Chris could eat
Bro my optimism died faster than light when I played loder after downloading the dlc
tying shit to FPS is always a rookie mistake ...
well atleast they got rid of some of the major bugs in the first patch
Commando's grenades physics we're affected by the FPS glitch as well, with uncapped frame-rates resulting in my grenades bouncing halfway across the map
According to the ceo of gearbox “this is just some jank we’ve tolerated”
exactly a month ago i bought ror2 because most of my friends had been constantly playing it. it quickly became one of my most favourite games and i was playing it for a few hours each day.
havent touched it since the update.
0:49 you show this one as if its new and couldnt already happen lol
one time i found a charged perforator printer that dropped the item straight out of the map ☠
Multiplying by delta time does the polar opposite of what you said, it makes things move the same speed, regardless of fps. They messed up and removed it, its already a dumb, kinda inexcusable mistake to forget it but adding it post release is a special kind of bad.
CHRIS DON'T MISS CHRIS DON'T MISS
5:25 no, it's very much an accident. A big accident for sure, but still an accident.
1:03 this was a big way before seekers of the storm even before survivors of the void
true, wanted to point that out as well but despite him leading with that one the followups were totally fugged. Loader's grapple being affected by frame rate is hilarious
i feel like this is the one situation where blaming the individual devs is Dumb because they were hired by a company to work on something they Had no idea how to work with.
(the devs that were hired literally did not know how to use unity at all and had to do everything in a different engine, then port it over)
of course that Fucked it up but it's not their fault.
you get told to build a house and the only tool you know how to use is a power saw then you're probably not gonna do it Smoothly.
Are there any instances where " bought " did NOT lead to videos similar to this one?
If i could i would love to turn the dlc off and keep the stages and music that go with it.
its called peakers of the storm, and its peak
also that item spawn bug has BEEN a thing. forever.
i pretty sure most of the bug problems we've all experienced in the update can all be sourced from the higher ups like take two interactive wanting the dlc to be released now to see immediate profit to appease their investors even though the devs ACTUALLY working/fixing the game told them it wasnt done yet, just classic corporate BS that every good developer seems to go through nowadays
The bugs already got parches letsgoooooo
the greaselord strikes again
i sure love the video jame industry
Thank the lord I haven’t played in like 5 months
Carti just released a song now you have to listen to him
Remember: the original creators of Risk of Rain willingly sold the IP to Gearbox after getting everyone's money. Do not support anything they make in the future.
womp womp just wait for the new patch
Man I heard the DLC was bad but I didnt realise it was this bad
but hey look on the bright side, apparently a bunch of hopoo devs got hired by valve so valve might make a game like risk of rain in the future
my guy made this video a little late, they already fixed most of the issues, and still are fixing them
Still a disgrace this was allowed to ship in the first place
I like that a patch dropped yesterday
Also pretty sure devs love this game and needed more time but big head guy at gb said MONEY
if you lived in sweden you could sue gearbox for making the game unplayable and they would have to either give you a full refund, give you a downpatched copy or fix the game. but only if you have owned the game for more than three years
I refunded the DLC, I’ll think about buying it when the game is in a playable state.
Primo, I put the The Binding Of Issac in first place among all roguelikes... mainly for being my first ever roguelike and one of the pioneer of the genre.
Secucundo, you gotta love this RoR2 review that explained how to go back to before the update.
Not to forget to mention the person chris christodoulou who does the ost for risk of rain 1 & 2
copyright strikes anyone & everyone who uses his music in their videos without warning or contact & lies & says he needs the money for his family which he doesn't have because he lives alone in a historic home that costed millions of dollars
there was a youtuber who did a risk of rain like mod for dark souls
& there were a few youtubers who did full ost stuff too & were copyright striked & he's rude about it too
damn shame too because i love these games & their music but after seeing & hearing all that
i've never buy anything risk of rain related again
bdw just saying but i don’t think devs are 100% at fault here gearbox was actually bought by a company that i forgot the name of THAT IS NOTORIOUS FOR KILLING STUDIOS AFTER BUYING THEM AND RUNNING THE GAME THEY WERE MAKING so i guess they just forsed them to crunch the dlc and ship it to make money
I have no idea if its frequency was changed with this update though
blud a lil late to the party that gearbox actually gave us the 1st patch lmao
From what I’ve been told you have to patch OUT game logic being tied to frame rates not add it in
I miss the quality of Survivors of the Void
