    I need your opinions, please!
Do you want to see more of this, like the Retro Tube vs the EVH 5150 III and maybe the Engl Invader or should I call it a day and move on to other things like the Herbert pedal and Synergy Savage module? Thanks

Engl needs to bring back the Retro Tube. I played one many years ago and have loved it forever. That being said, like most Engls, the compression is very obvious whenever they're in a shootout with a Marshall, which is very open. I personally love both for those reasons (currently own 4 Engls and 2 Marshalls). I do think Marshalls cut better than most Engls but I love the Engl sound.

Awesome video man, love how you do these.
Gotta say, for my taste the Marshall stomps all over the ENGL here. It has basically everything the ENGL has but with more weight and a more present top end. I like where the mids sit better too, higher up and more in your face. I hate using “bigger” to compare tones but the ENGL felt more boxed in compared to the Marshall.
The ENGL has a cool low mid thing going on but I’m not sure how often I’d want to use it. I can imagine the more compressed/distorted feel of the ENGL is what makes it a bit nicer to play, but also probably what makes it sound smaller here.

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne Great to hear man! What did it for me was yeah, the 5150/6505 does have a little more aggression, but the 6505+/6534+ gets you 95% of the way there on the lead channel, AND has a way more versatile clean/crunch, especially the 6534+. That, and the breakup has more of that midrange bark thing going on with the distortion that I love with the EL34s. Makes it more appealing than a 6505+ ever was. Yeah, the 5150/6505 like I originally wanted is also good, but I probably would've been stuck with a 1 trick pony. Wish more people talked about these. You reminded me why they're so great. I wanna get one before they get hard to find.

But seriously, I appreciate the hell out of that video. There's other amps I still want that a 5150 won't scratch the itch for, but now I probably don't have to go through 2-3 different amps before I find out what my favorite flavor of 5150 style amp is. I'd love to gear chase, but I just can't afford to lol. Did me a solid because I forgot these 6534+s existed

Honestly they have a very similar sound, but the marshall just has a brighter upper mid thing that appeals to me

Engl is more “vintage”, Marshall is more compressed, tight and focused. Two different amps, one is constructed for pure vintage tones, another one is typical “allrounder” with “almost complete” sound instantly usable in the band mix or record session without additional tweaking with EQ and dynamic processing. It’s hard to compare two different animals, but both of them are great!

  • @WurzHurz

The Tone Switch needs to be on on the Engl to be more Marshall-like. With it off you get the typical Engl sound. I got the Amp and used to own a JVM too. Also the Retro is much closer to a JCM 800, not a JVM, just smoother and much more versatile. But Engl doesn't replace Marshall anyway. It's just a different flavor. Engl has its own sound.

Perfect for Monday's lunch break - awesome!
I have to say - overall I'd probably go for the Engl, though there were some parts, where I favoured the Marshall (maybe a little more sparkle on the Marshall cleans, and maybe a couple of combinations with boosts where the Marshall "shines" more). The Engl for my taste lacks a bit of presence/openness in the higher frequencies (which was what also drew me to some tones of the Savage, especially the cleans) but I found the Retrotube overall more "consistent" if one can call it that.
As for next videos: I favour this kind of shootouts between 2 (or more) amps - never really had the opportunity to hear such a good comparison where I could make out the tonal differences between amp models/manufacturers and learn about them. So this has got my vote :) (though the Herbert pedal sounds really interesting as well).
EVH would certainly be interesting, I would also love to see a Diezel thrown in the mix if this makes sense at all!
As always - thanks a lot, looking forward to the next one!

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne Thinking back to your Herbert Mk2 vs. D-Moll video I'd probably say Herbert.
Yet I'm torn because I think there would be interesting aspects for both - I'll have to listen to both comparisons again ;)

    • @zanthraxus
      @zanthraxus Рік тому

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne Thinking more about the Herbert or D-Moll topic - after hearing both tones again I am inclinded to say, that a comparison between the Retro Tube and the D-Moll might make for the more relevant one since the Herbert can be a bit of "a different kind of beast".
So overall the combination of the comparisons Retro-Tube vs. D-Moll and D-Moll vs. Herbert Mk2 might make for the most complete overview.
This is just an impression though - what's your take on this? (especially since you can take the sounds in the room into consideration)

Engl amps getting drowned down in the bandmix?🤣
For sure yes when the mids are taken out,the gain is at max,the treble is at max, then without a doubt EACH amp will be drowned down by bass ,drums and another guitar (perheaps sweetspotted with love by its owner in the frequencies-ranges to get a band usable sound). The guitarists have to work together and finetune their tones to get a good Band-Tone.That works.doesn’t matter wich brand wich amp has.
