  • The final clip of the series that I have. This is the contract singing for Lawler vs Gilbert Unified title(Lawler) vs North American Title(Gilbert from Global). You see hints of heel Lawler as he just buries Gilbert until Gilbert goes crazy. Sorry for the sound being weird in this.

The look on Eddie's face when Lawler said he wanted to be like him speaks for itself.

Jerry Lawler was spot on. If he was lying, Gilbert would not react the way he did.

Harley Race is 100 times the man Jerry Lawler is, 1000 times the WRESTLER Jerry Lawler was and a true World Champion. I know was the AWA Champion but the AWA was dead when he held the title, so therefore it meant NOTHING. The USWA was a glorified indy promotion on it's best days. When Harley held the NWA Title he was a true world champion because the belt was defended throughout the world. Harley was the best ever.

You wouldn't know the difference between a territory and an indy promotion if it bit you. The AWA wasn't dead yet in May 1988, although it was in poor health. It was truly dying when Race wrestled Larry Zbyszko for the title in August 1990. Different promotions decided to work with each other (or not) for interpromotional championship matches, and sometimes these weren't held because of personality conflicts between promotors. Politics had a lot to do with those decisions and sometimes the best drawing wrestlers weren't included in the title picture at all. Interpromotional championship matches were rare after the WWF national expansion in 1984. Race was the NWA champ in a time and wrestling culture that allowed him to defend the title worldwide, and he happened to work for the only "worldwide" promotion at the time he was made champion. The same thing could be said for pretty much every NWA champ before him, and for Flair for a short while. To say Lawler's title reign meant nothing is just plain ignorant. "Best ever" is completely subjective, as is "true world champion", but you are most definitely entitled to your opinion. I agree with you that Lawler wasn't anywhere close to being the man Race was, but the wrestling business ain't about being tough, it's about putting people in the seats. Lawler had the advantage over Race in that area, as he's one of the top draws and top talkers (a related skill) in the history of the business. Race and Lawler had very different wrestling styles suited to different audiences, so they aren't very comparable in that area. Still, Lawler was a very good worker and got the crowd into his matches like few others, plus he was an innovative booker. Educate yourself a bit more and you'll see what I mean.
