The more I delve into the history of arcade games, the more I'm surprised by just how many games exist where developers tried to mesh traditional side-scrolling arcade mechanics with high-fantasy RPG elements. Given the number of titles from the likes of Capcom and Taito, it's clearly a genre with some popularity, and Black Tiger is yet another example. The technology and maturity of hardware of the time means it leans much more heavily to traditional platforming than the kinds of mechanics that would appear in later Capcom RPG-themed games, but you can see the beginnings.
As a game in it's own right, Black Tiger is really impressive. The vast levels, with their meandering platforms and multiple pathways, are more engaging than similar games of the time, and the pixel artwork is surprisingly detailed for the time.
Less surprising is the difficulty curve, which is typically aggressive - you'll definitely need a stack of coins in your wallet to get to the end of this one.

I think I collected all of the hidden bonus items; these are hidden behind destructible parts of the scenery. The best strategy to finding these is to shoot a stream of projectiles at walls and look for the tell-tale orange flames.

I can immediately see the resemblance to the _Ghosts n' Goblins_ series but there's also elements of _Kid Icarus_ IMO. I love Capcom classic goodness like this! Great playthrough.

Thank you so much for sharing this playthrough. Seeing this game and hearing the music oddly enough reminds me of the taste of old school classic chocolate Italian ices because my dad used to always take me to a local pizza place on Friday nights when I was a kid back in the eighties and they had this game there.
I loved it and played it all the time, eventually getting up to the third level which was just too much for my adolescent self to handle because this was an extraordinarily difficult game.
Last time I played this game was roughly around 2002 on a MAME emulator. I recently learned after watching this that the Capcom arcade stadium 2 had this game in its library so I was excited to pick it up and was immediately met with that old distant memeory of the taste of those chocolate italian ice's and spending some time with my dad, who I lost last year around this time.

Black Tiger was distributed in US arcades by Romstar who had a VERY strong relationship with Capcom.
I used to play this at Godfathers Pizza back in the day all the time ! This was one of my favorite games growing up as a kid. I still love playing it today as a 46 year old man ! Damn where does time go?

Magic Sword seems similar in aesthetics, but it's really a different kind of game, and pretty unique.
I got to 7 not knowing how to increase vitality and got stuck lol.

As much as I love Black Tiger graphics, I always hated its sound fx
So weird and crazy. Some Blind Idiot Translation issues are in this game, but otherwise not too bad.
The translation work in this game is so terrible, you would think it was written by a modern American English student
