The original Rastan arcade game is a genuine classic, taking inspiration from the likes of Conan the Barbarian and other high fantasy adventures.
The sequel (or not-sequel, if you played this outside of Japan) is a real disappointment for anyone who was a fan of the original. It may feature bigger and more detailed character sprites, but the shuffling animation and plodding pace sucks the enjoyment out of the game entirely.
Sadly, things get worse still when we take a look at the weapons system. The hero can equip himself with short sword and shield, a pair of claws, or a hulking zweihander. Personally, I don't see why you'd bother to use anything other than the latter, thanks to its extended range and attack power; it's the only weapon with which you stand much of a chance against the game's ridiculously imbalanced end-of-level bosses, so you should try and keep hold of it at all costs.
The final insult comes late in the game where, on the final level, there's a chasm which is simply too wide you cross by jumping. There's no alternative but to plunge into the pit and hope you respawn on the other side, and your bang out if luck if you happen to be on your last life - you best be ready to pony up a coin to continue playing.
Rastan Saga II is a lacklustre arcade game which really does a disservice to the franchise, and is an uncharacteristically poor show of form for Taito. This might account for the fact the game was rebranded as Nastar for other regions, but there's no hiding from the fact this is poor game, regardless of the name.

I remember being so devastated by this sequel. Rastan 1 was one of the greatest arcade games of all time. Was the sequel made by a different company?

I agree with the description.. I will also add that the main character's proportions are all over the place. The low number of animation frames make him look even worse.. especially the unmoving torso and incorrectly attached legs.
i like the graphics plus the original becomes enhanced and much more appreciated your the type that orders a bigmac then the next day you wonder why do your chicken nuggets not taste like your bigmac? because its not the same thing you wanted 5 years of streetfighter 2 thats what you really need
I remember playing it a few times when I was a child with a limited amount of coins. Mostly watched my friends or other people play and spend quite a few coins to keep advancing. I don't recall seeing the ending but it comes to mind how some stages were pretty difficult.
Are the voices in this game saying anything or is it just gibberish?

I commend you on your efforts. Sometimes the only way to prove your point is to show folks, no matter how painful. Otherwise they won’t believe.
I wish there was a Rastan arcade collection for all 3!
The Taito Memories series on Japanese PS2 has all 3 Rastan Saga games.
I can honestly say that I didn't realize there was a sequel. Only to find out in 2023 there were 2 more Rastan games. That said, neither one looks as well made as the original. 3 looks like a shitty Golden Axe but slower. Still cool to find these.
What?! Warrior Blade was so badass they had to have an extra monitor just to show you how much more badassery this game had.

Played this once or twice. What a difference from the original Rastan! The female voice freaked me out. It has a crystal twinkling quality. Is she speaking Japanese? Can't tell

Estaba chida la maquina, no pude terminarla con una moneda de mil pesos de la epoca. Musica muy buena y que decir de las armas.
Aquí en la ciudad de México había afuera del metro estación Juarez de la línea 3 del metro 🚇 unas maquinitas y ahí, ahí estaba esté juego el cuál yo iba desde dónde vivía hasta ahí para pasar horas y horas solo para esté juego. Mi Madre jamás supo que ahí yo iba 😂😢😢😂
The ending is unfulfilling and abrupt, but the music is very good and the visuals are amazing. 😈 I don't know what the female voice is saying, but she adds a great sense of mystery to the gaming experience. Yes it's flawed, but there's a lot for me to appreciate here.

There was a third game that had a choice of three characters:Rastan, a thief and a balanced character. It was because of this game’s poor showing that it didn’t get an appearance in most arcades. If you have MAME though, you might be able to play it.

Even though the graphics and level design took a step back, the music and sound design sound amazing! Rastan 1 still just plays better though.

The BSO of this game is fucking increible.
I had the Genesis version (bargain priced) but never realized they actually made an arcade version... looks similar and that's not a good thing.
Not as good as the first, but the Zuntata sound is there.

One of the best games of the era and you have us two (one which is Terrible this one) disjointed games that don’t feel like the original at all.
All we wanted was the same visual aesthetic as the first game with some more variation in levels, enemies and bosses with maybe. Little new variation in gameplay!

The sprites are a bit naff. They look like something from a Commodore Amiga or Atari ST game rather than an arcade game.

This looks, moves and plays so much worse than the first Rastan. Maybe I am in minority but I never liked the 'bigger bolder slower" sequels to such games. Example: I much prefer first Golden Axe to all the sequels. It has this charm that others don't IMHO.
I feel like this game owes Altered Beast a sincere apology.🤦 The Centaur boss belongs in a Zelda game and are those Spiny from Super Mario Bros???

You say that, but I honestly think not even half of their arcade output, especially from this era, ever came past mediocre. Taito was always a seriously overrated company in my eyes.

I've seen this run plenty of times but I've never seen a 2 Player run before. Would be pretty cool to see someone do it at least once.
At the end, the two player character have to fight each other for... I dunno, the right to become the King. I don't remember which arcade collection that provided the game for me -- most likely one of the Taito Collections on the PS2 -- but I played through the game with a friend and I remember just going "....really?!"

This looks ok, though i think the first one was way better. Better music, atmosphere etc. This one looks too 'cartoony' and peculiar sequel considering it came from the same developers...
This game was the HUGEST disappointment of my genesis childhood. As a kid, I had one game to buy for Christmas, and the box art faked me real good. I realised my mistake the moment the game began, with the horrible music loudly played on top of the bright and colorful world. What am I playing, Adventure Island? Then when the character started to walk, I almost laughed. His cross leg walking style was pathetic, but even more pathetic was his walking speed.. and that single artwork for jump is ridiculously lazy. The only good thing about this game was the claws weapon, but only when he 'scratches' upwards, cuz other than that, it looks dumb af to say the least. Stay away from this game at all cost.

I beat the first and third Rastan games at the start of this year and had a blast with them, but I knew the second one was terrible so I didn't touch it, this is my first time seeing it in action and....wow, it's worse than I could ever have imagined.
Why is Rastan so slow, what are these odd hazards (floating electric clouds, giant centipedes that fly around randomly and THE GIANT STONE DUDE THAT APPEARS ONLY ONCE), what the hell are those creepy voices saying ("anti-cronell"....? That' my best guess) and why does the game look worse than the first one?
Sound might became better but Look at that animation. It's gotten much worse compared with last year.
I feel like this one was called Nastar Warrior (Rastan Saga) in my area. While the graphics might be considered better, the music and gameplay seem so much like a step back in quality.

I have that game on my PlayStation 2 in a compilation called TAITO LEGENDS 2.
It is as good as the original prequel RASTAN.
Also, you can play a 2-player mode with a friend 😺👍🕹️🕹️.
Feelings like it «Altered Beast» from another realm . . . Hm...
