A Monster Unmasked: The Murder Of Shannon Schieber

- When a young student failed to go to her morning study session or meet her brother for lunch, people immediately knew something was wrong. Little did they know that just a few hours before, 911 had been called after screams for help were heard coming from that very apartment. This is the case of Shannon Schieber.

Man the police in some of these stories are utterly infuriating
Couldn’t of said it better myself
Their so bad, why didn’t they just break the door down 😢
Fucking useless 🙄
Makes you wonder in some unsolved cases, how many are because the criminal was just that good or just that lucky and how many are because the police just actually suck at their jobs
Turrible
“If you hear anything coming out of the apartment, call 911 immediately.”
Yeah, they already did that mate.
I know right it’s absolutely crazy
i know ...how totally stupid is that comment ..policing at its absolute best 😮
OMG! i heard that but didn’t realize how stupid it was!
It wasn't just carelessness and laziness. It was outright misogyny.
Absolutely incredible.
I'm nearly shaking from rage over this. I'm so fed up.
*_FINALLY_* a case where neighbours actually do the right thing and call the cops when they hear someone crying out for help, and the police do *ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!🤬* For ef’s sake.🤦🏻♀️
“Ahh you guys probably just heard someone else chocking on the street near by….. or maybe it was another apartment!”…. Welp time to get lunch boys.
I think this would make it extra hard as her parents or family...knowing that people tried to help and help was so close but the police just didn't want to do their job and help.
appalling that their SA department was called the "lying btches dept"
@@alaskayoung3413 *CHOKING
My niece was brutally murdered in PA. Some, good ol’ boy ‘cops’ accused my sister of being hysterical and dismissed her cry’s for help. My sister and I tracked this guy-through his credit card purchases-and told the cops that he was in their area. They asked her if she saw “pink elephants” too.
My 19yo niece was murdered a few days later. In her own home. With an order of protection (aka a piece of paper) lying on the kitchen counter.
They were awful.
Over 600 rapes classified as non-crimes. That is truly unbelievable.
But the police dept were not to blame 🙄 this case really is infuriating.
Inmates don’t like r*pests so we can only hope he’s having a really hard time
Same thing happened in Houston police department, rape cases were filed as no action. Police in USA are lazy, stupid and worthless. Waste of public taxes. We didn't need them.
Yes, we can't blame the city, but we blame p0lice!!! 🤮😖😖😖
This issue is so common with sexual assaults though. It's not just an occurrence in Philadelphia, it happens everywhere. I bet there are many Police Departments with a "Lying Bitches Unit".
It’s common in tons of departments even to this very day
the fact that help was just on the other side of the door… the police have got blood on their hands in this case !! great video as always :)
They should have been rotting in jail. Her taxes paid them!
@MrPicklePants-lm9tg Do you understand that this woman, was inside, with the criminal and that her neighbour verified that something is very wrong?
@MrPicklePants-lm9tg i can see you being violently misogynistic in other comments on this video so automatically i’m not engaging in a conversation about women’s safety with you
@MrPicklePants-lm9tg
What a sad, pathetic POS you are. Your parents must be proud.
@MrPicklePants-lm9tgare you trolling just to piss ppl off? If you have 2 separate accounts from 2 separate neighbors telling you a woman was inside screaming, that IS enough probable cause to bust the door down! No matter if you can’t still hear the screaming.
Also, where the actual f*** do you get off thinking you can speak on “what women should do?” No one but misogynistic a**hats think like this, and I doubt you’ve been anywhere near a real woman in decades. Not consensually, that is.
I'm 3 minutes in but the officers who were dispatched after the neighbor called shouldve been fired immediately
And prosecuted
3 minutes in, and then it gets worse.
I agree 💯
A 5-year statute of limitations is ridiculous for violent crime!!!! That is Injustice
But if you robbed a bank...
there shouldn't be any statute of limitations for violent crimes
Most countries have done away with this, because of historical sexual abuse cases. We know victims are sometimes paralysed with shame and take time to be ready to put themselves through the mill by reporting.
Police as they're leaving: "If you hear anything coming out of the apartment, call 911." "That's exactly what we just did!!!"
.....and people wonder why some victims don't report rape. Absolutely appalling.
Because some religious person will say lets just forgive him u gais uwu
@@cocogoat1111Yeah that's the reason. They opposed the death penalty not life in prison. I'm sure more rapes would be reported if it weren't for those religious people. Said no one with a clue. 🙄
@@cocogoat1111 Victims don’t come forward because 87% of police officers are men and rape is labeled as a woman’s issue. If only they knew men are 230 times more likely to BE raped than falsely accused of rape.
This inept cops are disgusting and have these lives on their shoulders. Shame on you all!!!!
Anyone seeing red listening how the police failed all these victims?
Thanks for putting these stories more in the public eye, as they should be.
A lot of police officers are offenders (sometimes in different ways like abuse) themselves.
Two separate people insist they heard screaming, calls for help, and scuffling. Why is that not enough for the police??
Apparently they were “unaware that the call was for a person in distress” 🙄
Because they are DUMB!!!
@@ultimatewitcherfan6677 yea cause we just call the cops when when people aren't in danger
Those neighbors are victims because they must live with what these incompetent police have done.
Exactly!!! 😢😢😢
Wanna use logic for a second instead of emotion? What grounds did they have to kick that door in? They heard nothing, no signs of a disturbance, just people reporting a scream, that is not enough for police to force entry unless the officers hear it, what if the person is lying, what if they’re watching a movie and it had a jump scare?
@@sharpshooter_Aus Common sense. Clearly if two people heard something, pin pointed it was coming from THAT apartment, they had every right to knock it down. Nothing to do with emotion. Just a lack of common sense. And furthermore, the neighbor told them that it sounded like someone was being choked. If someone was being choked my guess is they wouldn't be able to, at that point, respond back when they knocked. I've seen so many true crime cases where cops knock down doors because they aren't getting a response. Just idiot cops who didn't care to do their damn job.
As someone from Philadelphia, I clearly remember this case and the news. Shameful how victims were treated, it was a scary time to be a woman.
I can imagine, I hope it’s gotten better 🥺
Still is a scary time to be a woman or a man, you just never know
🙏
This is horrific. Probably one of the worst I've come across. You must have been terrified, not only for your life but if something happened, would you be treated with the same disregard? I'm so sorry, it just would have been so scary and I am so glad that you are ok ❤
Scary time to be a woman? So why is men dying more? Bet you had BLM on your social media too. You should walk on Kensington and preach your social justice.
I cant believe the cops didnt do anything when they insist they heard her being attacked
You must have had little interaction with police.
Seems the only times cops will bust a door down is to arrest someone not to save someone. So much for protect and serve.
@@Ashleyofthewolves there is a pattern between cases like this one: sh*tty police work. Infuriating but unsurprising.
So glad they got there just in time to do nothing 😒
@@dozzer009 To be fair, they never said who they will protect and serve. We just assumed it's the public.
It baffles me that a crime like rape can have an 'expiration date'. It sounds like a statute put on the books by perpetrators themselves. A crime should never go unpunished!. How many rapists escalate into serial killers?
If victims know no peace, neither should perpetrators
I can’t believe there’s a 5 year statute of limitations on rape… that’s so messed up
She was such a talented, gifted, and good-hearted person. She deserved so much better than this.
I just gotta say I love how your titles aren't clickbait and you always list the victims name in the title.
The neighbors heard screaming and sounded like someone being chocked. Police showed up and went to the door and heard nothing when knocking. You would think with their training, they would think something had happened to her since she isn't answering the door and the what the neighbors had heard.
Yes you would think..that's what we call incompetence..and those officers should of been prosecuted
Cops didn't hear the screaming though. The victim should of had a gun to defend herself. Or a husband. Why is a single woman living alone? Where is husband?
@@MrTerrrrible you can't be serious... not even sure I should reply to this potential rage bait.... The cop not hearing anything makes it even worse. You get called out to a house where the neighbor is insisting they heard a woman scream for help and choking noises, hearing nothing is the worst case scenario. You may say hindsight is 20/20 but the neighbor was certain. Knock the bloody door down. Im not an american tax payer but I would rather my tax money went towards buying new doors for the false events than letting this happen. Firing the incompetent officers from this case alone would save enough money to be thousands of doors in credit anyway. Women should be able to live alone in houses with no locks on the doors and be safe. i know thats not reality but victim blaming is disgusting

"The lying bitches unit" really just makes my blood boil. What if that was THEIR wife, sister, mother, cousin, aunt, neighbor, friend, etc?! The sad part is... I shouldn't even have to ask that question. Human decency, folks. How can those officers sleep at night?! Absolutely disgusting. Shannon was such an accomplished young lady who cared deeply for others, her family, her community. She deserved so much better from this world. RIP Shannon ❤
In as much as I get what you’re saying, women don’t have to have any association to a man eg a sister or mum, for their lives to be valuable. Being a human being is enough.
But misogynistic a$sholes don’t care either way
A better question is, what if it was their son, brother, uncle, father, or best male friend? Men seem to care about other men and themselves more than they care about the women in their lives. They do this because they can relate to each other and that seems to give them a human connection, where it is easy for them to see women as tools or nusances. We have to always deal with men with this in mind.
BASED. Women do lie. Ever heard of Amber Heard.
@@Enough.Said.theyd probably help them cover it up. As has been seen in numerous stories. Police...by their nature are one of the worst for covering up and committing crimes against women.

@@agnesnolan3879 I was hoping no-one would ask because I struggle with who should get the 3rd place, haha. I definitely put Rotten Mango in 1st place because Stephanie is just phenomenal! I think Casefile Presents has *outstanding* in-depth coverage of cases but I classify them as a podcast so they get #1 for that since they don't have anything to look at during videos; even though I still watch them.
I'm going to just list some of my favorites and hope others consider doing the same, maybe we can all find new people to watch that way. Brittney Vaughn is not only great but is hilarious. She's got a great community, too, where we chat about books and cool items from small businesses. She always does bloopers at the ends of her videos and it's the funniest thing - as are her dogs.
Bratterstein, great coverage and oftentimes will post super long compilations for people who need background noise in their lives. We love that.
Stephanie Harlow, she's a bonafide baddie and deserves being in the top 3. So, so good!
Jackie Flores, much like Rotten Mango, she's great at covering international cases many people haven't heard about. She oftentimes covers cases in Mexico.
The Misery Machine, I feel like everyone knows them and we all know they're great.
Jessica Anne, she's super slept on and I hope her following will soon match her coverage. I think she's only around 10k right now and it's been a pleasure watching her excitement as her audience grows.
Sommer Sanchez, she covers crazy old stuff, cults and whatnot.
It's past my bedtime or I'd list more. Hopefully there's at least one in there you haven't heard of. :)

Very tough to cover this, and Truly Criminal do it so well. Thankyou always for the respectful way that you describe these crimes. Also, with so much important detail, in a sincere way. The parents of Shannon showed and exemplary humanity, insisting on their principles, if not of an easy forgiveness, surely of an absence of revenge. Maybe that's the closest we can come to forgiving sometimes. Wishing well to the memory of Shannon, her family, and all the other people affected by this chain of crimes.
Well said.
2:07- within 5 mins the cops left..... it's almost unbelievable, almost. It's disgusting actually. After all the info from the neighbors and "nope, not even gonna check"
Omg. A priority one call. The police arrived there. People had reported a scuffle and screaming.
Isn't it the police's job to go in and investigate?! Not just walk away; having done nothing!
It is absolutely unbelievable. 😮
Rest in peace Shannon. 😢😢😢😢😢
You're right! They had probable cause. Therefore, they could've broken down the door.
And Shannon's father believes Shannon was alive when they arrived.

I can not thank you enough for the compassion and empathy that you maintained throughout this entire video. I am a survivor of rape. I know what it feels like to not have anyone listen to you. It makes you feel alone and victimized. And worst of all, you begin to question yourself entirely. My rapist was never tried in a court of law. Despite the fact that I had handprint bruising on my inner leg areas. I was also told by the sexual assault nurse that my internal bruising was some of the worst she'd seen in her career. I had a wonderful detecrive that was very empathetic. He was even puzzled as to why the prosecutor chose not to take it to court. I become sick to my stomach when people say disgusting things about rape victims who do not speak up until many years after their rape has occurred. They are afraid of the scrutiny that they know they will be forced to face. When will society, law enforcement, and the judicial system stop revictimizing folks who have already been through the worst thing imaginable?

I'm watching all the episodes backwards because I stumbled upon this channel not so long ago. Keep the good work and the narrator is brilliant.
Imagine being thanked by the person who did this to your daughter, because you didnt ask for the harshest punishment...
Yeah, that was disgustingly out of line! Even if your job is to support the criminal in court, it doesn't mean that everything should be centred around that person! As if the family and other victims were doing it for the sake of the criminal! 😡 Also, the random comments from people dismissing the family's (and other victims') choice were as equally appalling!
The fact they called it The Lying Women’s Unit shows how misogynistic they were. What if it were their mom, sister, or daughter?
As much as I know where you’re coming from, I hate the notion that a woman should have to have some connection to a man for them to have any value. It shouldn’t matter that she’s someone’s something, it should just matter that she is a person who has been a victim of a crime.

What a sick, sick individual. Glad he gets to suffer in prison for the rest of his natural life. What a disservice form the Police Department initially in this case.
Thanks to the neighbours, digusting policing. Shannon rest in peace, healing to the victims.
Why do women not seem to matter in so many cases its awful so many lives lost so many families broken 😢
Because we still live in what amounts to a patriarchy where, predominantly, men hold the power to influence cultures and wield that power. At the core of patriarchy is the disempowerment of women and a good way of doing that is by devaluing them. I do not mean to broadly damn men as individuals, I mean to damn the power imbalance in play. 😢

The gall to intentionally victimize women, to be so destructive in their misogyny it resulted in a murder - and to ASK FOR MORE MONEY AS A SOLUTION?? when people say ACAB, this is what they mean. The police sure do know how to screw up royally. If it's a mistake then you beg for forgiveness afterwards and impress upon people that you had two neighbors who were extremely concerned. It's a shame. The police should be ashamed of themselves. The killer was most likely still in her apartment as the door was closed at the patio when they were there she could’ve possibly even been alive. Unbelievable! The police have blood on their hands. I can’t imagine how I would feel if I was one of the neighbours.
Truly heartbreaking.
What really drives me insane is the statute of limitations on crimes..in this case, five years for rape. For the victim, the impact of that rape doesn't magically disappear after five yeats. The system is giving the perpetrators a free pass after that passage of time...and with speed and urgency that many departments deal with these crimes it's literally almost guaranteed that they are home free no matter whst they do sexually. A friend of mine reported her rape, went through the added trauma of having a rape kit done, only to have it sit on a shelf waiting to be processed for the next 4 1/2 yrs. The serial rapist was caught and charged but not with her rape, it was just over the five yr mark and according to the system.... it hadn't happened.
She is a much different person now 😥.
My jaw dropped at the beginning! How can you just IGNORE two concerned neighbors and NOT investigate a HIGHLY possible crime!?.. Just completely dropped the ball. How disgusting!
