Top song, I met him once and chatted in a pub near the studio I worked in, we got to the pub at opening 11am and he had already polished off 8 cans of Stella in the studio, I fancy he did well to last so long, my abiding memory is he just treated me like anyone else and he was a very funny bloke, proper down to earth.
I have a bad habit of singing this to every Victoria I've met. Great to see one of England's greatest wordsmiths paying homage to probably their greatest wordsmith.
If you had a daughter named Victoria, would you or she go looney 1st? BONUS ROUND: If you worked and lived in Victorian buildings traveling @ 400 kph, who is the Bus Driver? THUMBS UP.
One of my favourite Fall albums. rest in peace you crazy genius, the world is a more boring place without you. BTW, whenever I pass Victoria station in London I humm this song. :)
It was bad, called obscene And the rich were so mean Stately homes for the Lords Golden lawns, village green Victoria was my queen Victoria, Victoria, Victoria I was born, lucky me In the land that I love Though I'm poor, I am free When I go I shall fight For this land I will die Let her sun never set on Victoria, Victoria, Victoria Canada to India Australia to Cornwall Singapore to Hong Kong From the West to the East From the rich to the poor Victoria loved them all Victoria, Victoria, Victoria

Such an adorable video. Brixie's in her corset, and Mark E.'s in his full regalia! Adorable song too; Mark E. Smith sounds like he's having even more fun singing it than Ray Davies did. It's a fun song. Next time Victoria Day rolls around, in B.C where I live, I'm gonna sing it.
Shows another side to the Fall. A great snub to their critics who said the Fall can only make that same old same. The Fall could do (and did do) anything they (Mark!) wanted to. 'Check the record. Check the guy's track record.' (Please tell me they've written that on Mark's headstone...)
Just struck me; I should probably brush up on my architecture....Is the cake supposed to be in the form of the Crystal Palace? (which was to burn down in the 1930s)
🇦🇺 Like a lot of Australians who are descendants of Queen Vic's colonial subjects we are very familiar with a lot of Brits being patronising and condescending towards us. It usually doesnt go down well. It usually goes down very badly. I love this band and have done since the late 70s. I somehow got backstage after a gig when they were touring Extricate. I spoke with MES who came on like just another arrogant, patronising and condescending Brit. Like a lot of us down here, especially those of us of paddy stock like me, I dont appreciate Brits speaking to me like I'm some kinda dumbf...k colonial subject which is what MES did.I didnt try to hide my unhappiness. We exchanged a few heated words and then he walked off mid sentence. Maybe he sensed I was about to tell him f...k you you pommy c...t and then put him on his arse, the weedy b...d. I still love the band though so im still spinnin them. Weird hey?

The Fall played a gig in Sydney in the late 80's at a Sylvania Hotel where they didn't play any of their well known popular songs. The crowd were not happy and the Band couldn't care less about it. It was probably meant to be some kind of Punk attitude. Personally, I think it is extremely rude and arrogant of the Band. Mark E. Smith was probably making a point. " Oh, if you'd bought our albums then you'd know the songs we played tonight" He was right, I only bought a few Singles. When was Mark E. Smith not right? Probably never. I'm fairly certain that he and I shared the same political views.
Mark never played the old songs at gigs, just whatever was on the new album at the time. That's where his creative energy was focused in that point in time. There are many artists who happily make a living flogging their old carpet. Mark wasn't one of them.
🇦🇺 I saw them touring Extricate in Canberra at the ANU Refectory in '90. Great gig. The only bad thing that happened was I somehow got backstage and met MES. He was one of the most arrogant, patronising and condescending people I've ever met. I did not like being spoken to like I was some dumb.. k colonial. I was unhappy and didn't try to hide it. I've heard the same. Lucky you, what a memory.
Wow that’s a real great story. Thanks for sharing ❤️
Thanks to The Kinks and The Fall, i loved both versions.
Covers can be terrible. This is absolute brilliance. It adds something new to the original.
I have a bad habit of singing this to every Victoria I've met. Great to see one of England's greatest wordsmiths paying homage to probably their greatest wordsmith.

How could the Late Great John Peel and his sessions be wrong?

Mark E. Smith- the funniest man in post-punk and alternative music. Love his book RENEGADE.
Interviewed him back in the day. Delighted to know he was a fan of both Arthur Machen and Colin Wilson.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh . Love it. 😘😘😘😘👍🇬🇧
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, Victoria Victoria, Victoriaaaaa
Classic song, the unbeatable Fall. RIP Mark
Fan for years. My favorite Fall LP is still "This Nation's Saving Grace".
Quite.
It was bad, called obscene
And the rich were so mean
Stately homes for the Lords
Golden lawns, village green
Victoria was my queen
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria
I was born, lucky me
In the land that I love
Though I'm poor, I am free
When I go I shall fight
For this land I will die
Let her sun never set on
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria
Canada to India
Australia to Cornwall
Singapore to Hong Kong
From the West to the East
From the rich to the poor
Victoria loved them all
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria
Cheers, mate!

But the music was what came,
Hundreds of thousands of bands couldn't keep track,

Amazing video
Just struck me; I should probably brush up on my architecture....Is the cake supposed to be in the form of the Crystal Palace? (which was to burn down in the 1930s)
Yep, built for the Great Exhibition of 1851, seen as the height of Victoria's reign.
Perfect!
he was a one of they broke the mould

So the part at 1:19 really reminds me of another song. I'm sure I'm not the only one that hears it.
PIL - Rise
i wonder if Mark E Smith has ever met Ray Davies? if so, i'd love to be a fly on the wall in that meeting.
tsartodd It wouldn't have been pretty.
No meeting with MES is pretty, and that's the way he likes it.
I wonder no more -- if they haven't met already, they won't ever meet. Not in this life anyway.
RIP Mark E. ;_;
Brix has never looked better.
When I saw them live, I thought see looked really hot on stage.

Love it, but was always disappointed he didn't do it in full MES style: "Victori-ah was my queen-ah, victoooorrriii-ah"

RIP Mark
Who did what first PIL with Rise or Mark with Victoria?
Rise was 1986, this was from 1988.
That man knows how to wear a stock.
Is this a very rare cover version?
One of the baddest for real don't know much about his girl but she looked more than certifiable 2 !
