  • There’s a small puddle of oil underneath your motorcycle. It could be the shift shaft seal.
In this video from Partzilla.com, John will show you how to replace the shift shaft oil seal on your motorcycle with just a couple of tools. Once the oil is drained, you’ll need to decide what tool offers the most effective way to remove the seal. You can use a pick tool, a flat blade screwdriver, or even a wood screw.
Once the seal is removed, we’ll use a socket to drive the new seal into place.
These are just the basics, so for specific instructions for your unit, refer to your service manual. For diagrams of your motorcycle, ATV, or UTV, find it at www.partzilla.com/

I was dreading doing this on my zx6r. I had the engine apart putting new shift forks and drum in it… after it was all out back together, the shift shaft started leaking. Thank God you posted this video, saved me from pulling my hair out!

Thanks saved me a lot of time on my KTM EXC. I just used a wood screw and levered it out using slipjaws against the frame - too easy

I just got a new dirt bike only done around 100 miles on it and I've noticed oil around the shift lever don't know if it's just me or because it's a Chinese bike

On Yamaha V-star cruiser, the main shift shaft seal is not the one that is visible to the outside like this one in the video. It's buried inside of the crankcase cover, behind a cosmetic seal that basically does nothing but keep some dust off of the main shift shaft seal. You have to remove the whole crankcase and reinstall the gasket. The seal cannot be pressed in flush with the surface that it's being pressed into... You must tap it all the way in, another 1mm to 1.5mm deeper. Otherwise, the seal will be lined up on a recess in the shift shaft, and leak.
