- Video-In this completely free DIY video we show you how to remove and replace a shifter lever shaft seal on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It doesn't really matter the year or model of Harley, as this seal and setup has been used for a very long time.
This shift lever seal can go bad and start leaking oil. To get to it, you'll need to remove your entire primary drive.

Yup, we'll show you how to remove your entire Harley-Davidson primary drive, remove the shifter lever shaft seal, and then replace it. Then we show you how to put the entire primary back on. We'll also show you some tips and tricks along the way.
Note: You'll need a replacement shifter lever shaft seal and appropriate primary gaskets and seals (shown in the video so check it out). You'll also need appropriate fluids to refill your primary drive.
Save yourself a ton of money by not having to take your Harley to the dealership to have these types of projects done. You can do this right in your very own shop or garage and right on the kickstand. Plus, have the absolute satisfaction of wrenching on your own Harley!
Great video guys, I’m just a young buck trying to work on my bike to save on cost of repairs to get a new shifter shaft rod. This is by far the most detailed, high quality video I’ve seen and it definitely helped a lot, you guys are the best!
A video about replacing a shift shaft seal, but you do everything but replace the seal. Nice.
Thank you brother helped me out so much. Just got done replacing my shift shaft and this video helped me out so much. The dealer wanted 500 plus for the job I did. Thank you again.
Doing this on my 2014 street glide special fixing the shift shaft seal and thank you so much for your videos saved me about 500 dollars from putting it in the shop!! You’re amazing and much appreciated!
I just changed shift shaft seal on my 2021 Roadking Special without removing inner and outer primary...lots of room to get at in on the M8...took me an hour and a half tops...removed transmission top cover..removed trans shift lever clip and washer. unhooked shifter pawl spring...lift pawl...pushed shifter shaft through towards transmission...bent a piece of welding rod...picked out old seal...popped out easily with with shifter shaft pushed in....push shaft back to normal position making sure shifter centering spring in place...heat shrink tube over the shifter spline and oil up...slip new seal over shaft and set into place with a 1/2 inch socket levering with a screw driver. Replace everything back in reverse order of disassembly...good to go. M8 has lots of room between primary to get at it.
Done this job several times on different models....this was done very well & nice detail
Some Dyna riders have gone to 13.5 to 14 inch shocks and a 2" fork tube increase for proper ground clearance. That will certainly help taller riders.
Much obliged for the vid!!
this is really good. Really good. Just bought my first HD and going to replace the final drive belt soon.
Great video! Used this to help replace my shift shaft on my 2016 dyna street Bob! Thanks a lot!
Awesome video! clear instructions and good camera views
BEST Video I have seen brother! Great Job, and thank you, saved my butt with this video, I need to change out the Shift Assembly, had no idea!
I'm switching to mid controls from the factory fronts on my 03 wide glide and need to do alot of this, including entirely swap the inner primary to one which actually has the hole going through it to accommodate a mids gearshift. So, fk yeah man, thanks for this, it makes it seem do able. Respect
Thanks m8. I already have my primary off and noticed weeping and saw your how to after a quick search.
You are making some awesome videos by the way. Maybe best I’ve seen. Great job and thank you
I have to say very informative and your videos have helped out soooo Much and saved me soo much money and educated me too! Thanks For Everything!!
I think the clutch inspection cover screws require a # 27 Torx, #25 will strip out, at least on my 2012 Road King. Good video of what was to me a scary job.
Made me feel a lot more comfortable going back to kids thanks for this video!
IT COST ME 800 PLUS FOR THE COMPENSATOR REPLACEMENT. THE PRIMARY LEAKED AFTERWARD. THEY CLAIMED IT WAS THE SHIFTER LEVER LEAKING FROM TRANSMISSION. I NEVER LOST FLUID FROM TRANI, JUST PRIMARY. WHEN I TOOK IT BACK NEW SERVICE MANAGER, I WAS TOLD BEFORE "IT MIGHT BE THE INNER PRIMARY." ANOTHER 340 DOLLARS. THEY STILL CLAIMED IT WAS THE SHIFTER SEAL. THE COPENSATOR SHOULD BE A RECALL. THE SERVICE MANAGER, FORMER, SAID, "WE ARE HAVING TO REPLACE ALL OF THEM." THEY USED THE 88 COMPENSATOR FOR THE 96 ENGINE . THEN THE REPLACEMENT ONE HAD TO BE UPGRADED TO THE SCREAMING EAGLE ONE AS THE OTHERS FAILED. I ONLY POINT THIS OUT AS YOU SUPPORT MY COMMENTS. I LOVE MY HARLEY BUT MANAGEMENT IS GOING THE WAY OF GM. HARLEY IS NOT AS BIG AS GM SO MUCH EASIER TO FAIL. I DON'T WANT TO SEE THAT. I HOPE SOMEONE FROM MANAGEMENT SEE'S MY COMMENT HERE.
Thank you for showing this video
