Melanie Safka Chords Of Fame
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 сер 2010
- Melanie Safka's beautiful rendition of the late, great Phil Ochs composition, Chords Of Fame. I've cleaned up, resync'd and hopefully improved the audio and video quality of this "old" piece of film.
I found him by the stage last night,
He was breathing his last breath,
A bottle of gin and a cigarette
Was all he had left.
Well, I know that you make music
'Cause you carry your guitar,
But God help the troubadour
Who tries to be a star.
Come on and play the chords of love my friends,
Play the chords of pain,
But if you wanna keep your song, no no no,
Don't play the chords of fame, oh no no
You know I've seen my share of hustlers
As they try to take the world,
And when they find their melody
They're surrounded by the girls.
But it all fades so quickly
Like a sunny summer day;
Reporters ask you questions
And may write down what you say.
Come on and play the chords of love my friends,
Play the chords of pain,
But if you wanna keep your song, no no no,
Don't play the chords of fame, oh no no
They'll rob you of your innocence,
They'll put you up for sale,
The more that you will find success,
The more that you will fail.
I'd been around, I had my share
And I really can't complain
But I wonder who I left behind
On the other side of fame
Come on and play the chords of love my friends,
Play the chords of pain,
But if you wanna keep your song, no no no,
Don't play the chords of fame, oh no no
Melanie was proof that the human voice is an instrument that can't be replicated.
She was great, love her voice, lucky to have her music, to stay in our hearts.
Originally done by the songwriter Phl Ochs. I love this version.
Especially moving as we now honor Melanie's life--this is so her story
I needed to hear this again tonight. Melanie at her finest. No one is as close to her perfection, the greatest singer songwriter of my lifetime.
You probably already know this Robert that Melanie didn’t write this song, but she does make it her own.
@@vibesinthesky Yes sadly I'm old enough to remember Bobby Darin and Tim Harding doing it, long before Melanie. I wonder why it was never released and only the acetate seems to remain. Personally I like the clicks and pops and slightly scratchy sound.
I know I'm biased but Melanie has been the music I always turn to since Born to Be. And Something Warm will carry me into my next life. I've been told the title isn't exactly compatible with a cremation. But the song certainly is, I'll be smiling if that's the case.
@@vibesinthesky Similarly with "Ruby Tuesday" and others.
Yes! Totally agree!
PUT MELANIE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!!!! Cheers\=/\=/
AGREE!
I would have bet the farm that Melanie wrote this song. It is sooo Melanie!!!
With her versions of songs like this their poetry, I've never understood how people dismissed the music as bubblegum. Now I discovered her music in the 90's so I 'wasn't there' to see radio, critical reception in real time, but I appreciate her Brand New Key just as well as the heart-wrenching works of her catalog. Lyrics in a song like this just tell her own journey of fame and then die-hard fans that take the time to join her in all genres and styles that are performed in the unique way that only Melanie can deliver. Thank you for posting this with performance footage, just incredible as always 💜 I've had the privilege to see her live four times one of which was a Christmas show on the Kent stage early on with her son Beau and it was joyful to watch her joy in her performance and love of the season. One of the few times I was star struck meeting a musician years before. I literally had no words but thank you as she signed one of my records. Melanie is a treasure and I wish more people knew about her deep, poetic timeless music. All love and respect 💜
Melanie was real, the song deep and the feelings hopeful

I loved Phil Ochs, but Melanie owns this great song,a great tribute to Phil, love Melanie forever
Got to say Phil Ochs hits the 'god help the troubadour' line much better
Amazing
Been a fan of hers for 42 years, have 5 of her records and I didn't even know this existed. Nice! Thanks for posting
Melanie's beautiful cover of Phil Ochs' classic ballad was on her album, "The Good Book."
Melanie was always so sweet!
melanie the great! high priestess to mankind
I love you, Phil.
no one will ever touch melanie safka in the history of this countries music.as well as other countries on the planet.oh and lets not forget the other planets.wow thank god she's still around . she is the only singer that could sing and write songs today.and always will be
Love this song.Thx for live version
A brilliant performance!
There is a great cover of Ochs' "When I'm Gone," on UA-cam by Allison Crowe, whose style is very much reminiscent of Melanie Safka's.
So amazing . . .
Just fantastique!
I loved Mel for a long long time ! Shes a sweety !
In 1972 (showing my age) Melanie was my celebrity crush and, while her place has now been taken by Rihanna, I still think she is wonderful.
Phil forever. What would you have said about the modern world my beautiful friend?
Paul Lavan It would be worth hearing for sure. He was a great critic of the times and the times have gotten even crazier.
Melanie may not have realized at the time she first performed this song, but she saw something that is now taking place so many years later. Her music speaks for itself through her heartfelt and sincere delivery.
Melanie is truly a Futurist and speaks the truth.
Just listen closely to words.
Tm 96 I agree Melanie makes the song her own but it was actually written by Phil Ochs
I hung out with the folksong crowd in the 60's, but I never heard of her until 2019 !
!!!!!!!😮
this looks like the Montraue Jazz festival she also was in the Phl Ochs Memorial concert that was sold out
Thanks for posting this gem!
This is one of my favorites.
i love the music of Melanie and i must confess i love her early works the most My father tuning my guitar left over wine etc but this one is great love y Melanie
Oh mi gosh - I had no idea the singer was Melanie until I read the comment about Brand New Key (which I always liked). Great rendition of a great song.
Here's an improved quality version David ua-cam.com/video/BQeDpAwsKmU/v-deo.html
@@vibesinthesky thanks much
Great performance of a sad song.
I love this song
THIS SONG had a huge impact on me. I am presently uploading my cassette recordings from 1972-2002 and realize that i wrote many great songs in an unusually diverse and unrepetitive style. A local artist was interviewed around the same time explaining how chasing success in the music biz was just beating your head against a wall and then signing away your rights and hours (and life) where you got 5% of the profits you generate. I opted out.
My heart was broken anyway, many times, by the nature of life. But i am THANKFUL that i did not waste my life in a SISYPHUS effort that would have crushed me.
Melanie succeeded but was also crushed by this greedy interface between our love and someone's unearned dollars. What a nasty f***ing burden. :(
a powerfull voice whith emotion! beauriful!
so sweet song Love Melanie
Outstanding!
I love Phil Ochs so very much, but lord Melanie ROCKS this song
Better advice than ever and sadly more ignored. Melanie is always beautiful though.

Looks Great
Gracias por esta dulce musica en estos momentos dificiles, valores humanos .
Reporters ask you questions
And they write down what you say
Yeh, they do. And they write down what you don't say too.
Do happen to have Leftover Wine from this same festival?
l keep my song
@powwie1 Glad if it's some help / comfort to you ... there are a few more Melanie videos on my channel just do a youtube search for Melanie vibesintheky
You don't happen to have the rest of this concert do you??
Thet for
Fater M.S. - Savka. but for...
a bottle of gin and a cigarette- different chemicals, but sounds like Prince, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, how many more?
Well, jeez.... the song isn't just about the nicotine and alcohol, though! It concerns the achievement of success, the struggle to maintain it and the regrets that come in sacrificing the former person you once were... weighed against the experiences that have changed you along the way...
No sorry
