My hair straightener cord is about to do this.. I did a quick search and found this video. Instead of buying another expensive replacement, I will be heading to Home Depot to repair it, myself. Thank you for saving my ass over $150 💯 You're doing the Lord's work.
I simply cannot thank you enough for this AMAZING video! I used your link to order the plug from Amazon, since Home Depot did not have it. I followed your instructions exactly, and guess what? My beloved vacuum has a beautiful brand new plug! I did it all by myself, thanks to you! Best instructional video EVER!
Awesome, thank you. Our vacuum cord at work broke, the prong ended up in the outlet. This video helped me to fix it since we didn't have a guy around to take care of it. Us women like to keep things clean you know. Took a pair of scissors and a sharp knife. It worked!! But we then realized someone bought the wrong plug replacement. I am picking up the right one and our vacuum will be back in action for less than $5! Thank you.
I have a Shark vacuum that I yank out of the socket, and one of the prongs broke off. Last time this happened I had to buy the Shark I have now. Now after finding this video, I won't have to buy a new one. This is incredible, Thank you.
I had a space heater in storage for several years plugged it in and last night and this morning smelt plastic burning so immediately unplugged it. I think the prong was a little rusty honestly don’t remember looking at it. FYI everyone should examine plugs before plugging into an outlet. I feel so stupid not doing that. Mine is a three prong plug. Will have to get the wire stripper too as well as replacement at HD or Lowe’s. Ty so much for your video. I too feel confident enough that I can do it myself! ✨👍
Thank you! The guy at Home Depot said the wires didn't matter. I see that you said black to gold(brass?) and white to silver. I figured it mattered and I specifically asked, so I am glad I found you. You helped my family be safe.
While it is true that the appliance doesn't care which wire is connected to hot vs neutral, you absolutely might. Polarization ensures that the wire you're more likely to touch is the neutral; it's a safety feature
I recently pulled my vacuum plug out of the outlet and it broke. I watched your video and was able to replace the broken plug. It works great! Thank you!
Thanks for making this. I have an old Bradford radio from the late 60s that I'm going to need to replace the plug on, and this is going to help so much. Really appreciate the simple straight forward directions, without any extra fluff. Got yourself a new subscriber.
Wow! Glad to have found this video, I literally thought I had to buy an entire new adjustable frame for my bed I’ve been having for 14 years and now I know what to do to fix my broken plug! Great video thanks 😊
I needed this video. My wife has a HD vibrator that uses a plug-in. It broke recently, and she started giving me those bedroom eyes. I knew I had to fix it before I became her sacrificial lamb. This video saved me... Thanks Again...
I came across ur vid and was pleasantly surprised to see u can use a three prong in place for the two prong plug I'm not familiar with electrical repair at all and the one I bought initially was too small for the wires and it won't close. I'm going back today to get a larger housing. I'm sure it will work and thanks for the vid!
Ditto everyone! Useful to the max I’m curious though does it matter that the original plug was two prong and the one you chose to replace it with was three prong? 4:46
Thanks for easy to follow video. I needed to get my plug replaced but your video gave me the confidence to do it myself. Your video saved me time and money. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the great video! I now have three working Electrolux vacuum cleaners instead of three pieces of junk, and it didn't cost me a repair bill. Once again, thanks.
I’m so excited, I got a vintage/antique sewing machine recently and the plug needs to be replaced Now I gotta figure out how to fix the spot where the wires connect to the machine (it kind of loops around two nubs)
Hi. I want to say thank you for this video. I assume that replacing a plug end is standard all around as I needed to replace a plug for an old electric heater. You saved me from throwing it away. This was the only thing left that I had of my dad's since he passed away years ago and did not want to part ways with it. It seems simple to replace and I am grateful for being led to your video 😃🙌!
This is great. Got the same exact problem on an old Miele. I originally soldered it but that failed quickly. It's a polarized 2-prong but I like the stabilizing effect of the large 3-prong plug like you did. Thanks!
I have a 10 year old Miele, issue is with the cord by the plug end, obviously the wiring inside is faulty it works if you bend it the right way. I think replacing the plug to cord will be easier?
Currently making a canister filter for a tropical paludarium tank ✌️😁 needed to replace the plug for an appliance so I could thread it through a small hole to ensure a tight waterproof seal and this is perfect, busting out the wire pliers
@@ThriftyGarage I worked at first, then I had to strip the wire more because it kept coming out. Then it short circuited. Should've got the electric tape 😂
Are all plugs like that compatible with all power cords? I have an electrolux vac and the info tag has worn off. I don't know the voltage. If I want to buy one like you have, what do you call it? I'll be getting it on Amazon. Thanks. UPDATE: I just found them on Amazon, looks like 15 amp will do the trick.
A have a case with a dehumidifier, I have to replace the plug end every three or four months because it gets burned after a hot spot is produced in one of the prongs. In using a plug similar to the one you use NEMA5-15P . Seems to be that after a while one of the screw contact forms a hot spot and overheat the blade. I'm thinking todo a try with another type plug end which terminal is a compressed hole
Hey, I just came across this video and I’ve been stressing. I’m gonna try to do this to my $200 curling iron that one of the prongs broke off so I’ll update you!!!
would this work for an ac unit? anything different? i can’t find any specific videos on an ac unit plug in. slightly worried i’ll run into something i don’t know! i rent so i do not want to just cut into the wiring on the unit!
I had a vintage record player short at the base of the cord and the plug. It broke off at the connection of the two. I believe the wire was worn and when I plugged it in the connection created a surge and ⚡ the two were no longer connected. Is there a problem with the age of the cord and adding a new plug to it? Thank you! I'd really like to fix it and hear my vintage record player play.
If the cord insulation is failing I would recommend replacing the entire cord. We had a very old cord for a lamp in our shed. The insulation was dry and cracked. It was no longer doing its job. That can be very dangerous and is a fire and a shock hazard.
15 amp is what you want. You just don't want the original amperage to exceed the amperage of the replacement. Other way around is perfectly fine (and you're only going to find 15A with the parallel blades and 20A with the horizontal neutral)
Labor will always be what gets you every single time so it's always been wiser to do it yourself when you can. My younger brother took his car to the dealership to have his battery replaced once. Once. He was young, he never made that mistake again. I don't remember the exact numbers as it was in the 90's, but the labor was 2.5x the cost of the battery (dealership prices, mind you, which are always higher but still..). For this repair, either DIY or buy a new one; the repair would probably cost nearly as much as a new appliance
What do you do with an extension that has a 3rd wire (ground) but I'm installing a plug with only 2 prongs, do I just leave the ground wire unconnected ? ?
Electric? Usually you can buy a new plug and pigtail. I would recommend that. With the higher amperage and power requirement you would definitely want to have a good secure connection without the possibility of a short.
if the device works fine with two prongs, even if the ground prong broke do I still need to replace the plug? I really do not want to mess up the device(have never done any sort of wiring before) could I simply stick the ground prong back on the original plug and then use an extension cord or do I need to do the process in the video?
The ground wire is for surge protection or a short circuit. Will the device work without a ground; yes. But it would be best to have the device wired correctly.

Hey man, props to saving all these people money by showing them that appliance repair is sometimes possible. 😃
Well you gave me confidence to do this myself. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 3 years later, is still helping folks. RAR Sacramento, CA 4/23/23

Great video! I am an old lady and I think I can actually achieve replacing the plug on my 40+ year old Electrolux Marquis. Thanks so much!
I'm a big believer in fixing things rather then replacing things awsome video
My teenager followed your video and fixed the vacuum cleaner cord. Thank you for the amazing video.

This idea is much better than cutting off a different cord off an old appliance and pairing the two with electrical tape. Cleaner.

If both screws are brass, how do you know which to put the white/black wire on? Or does it not matter in that case? Thanks!
Side that has the larger prong is white/neutral wire, side with the smaller prong is black /hot wire.
Will a plug that says 15a 125v work with a space heater that says 120v 60hz 1500 watts?
What do you do with an extension that has a 3rd wire (ground) but I'm installing a plug with only 2 prongs, do I just leave the ground wire unconnected ? ?
Why wouldn’t you maintain the ground?
Thank you so much!!! Big Help.. Appreciate you.. 🥰
Does this work with a 2 prong samsung fridge plughead?
Yes, should work as long as you connect the right wires. Make sure your outlet will accept a 3 prong or find a two prong replacement if needed.
Will this work for a washer machine plug?
As Thrifty Garage said, you should. That's because with the ground pin missing, the device has a much higher potential to become unsafe
Question : do you then snip off the third prong on the new plug head that you didn’t have to wire to? Or can you just leave it and plug in?
I did not remove the 3rd prong.
Thank you. I've done this before but years ago. Easy to understand!
Thanks for watching!
