This new retrospective / review is written, edited and voiced by Tim Partridge. Tim has appeared on my UA-cam channel a number of times over the years taking part in audio commentaries and he directed my Superman IV documentary 'The Man of Steel and Glass'. Tim really wanted to produce a video to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Darkwing Duck and has put a lot of time and effort into this video. I hope you all enjoy it!
This video spoke to the heart. I grew up with Darkwing and remember coming home from elementary school to watch it. Thanks for all the research done to make this.
Agreed completely. Lots of talent behind the voices on this cartoon. Jim Cummings is one of three voice actors, along with Tom Kenny and Billy West who I consider the Mel Blanc of our time.
Which the DuckTales reboot totally, utterly squandered. Whether it was Darkwing, Gosalyn, Steelbeak, etc. The reboot not only failed to capture the same vocal power, but it did something even worse... It made these characters *BORING.* Pale, boring imitations of the superior original iterations.
While I do strongly agree that the voices for Gosalyn and Steelbeak are pretty weak in comparison to back then, I do think the new Darkwing duck’s voice is just as great. Gosalyn was supposed to look and sound like a young 10 year old, however, she comes off more as a 16 year old while Steel beak is…sorta average??? They completely changed his character unfortunately. But I do think the new Darkwing is pretty solid because he’s supposed to be a young passionate actor who looks up Darkwing and he comes off as genuinely excited and passionate about taking on the role as the new Darkwing duck. This is just my opinion though, I could be completely off for all I know-
Darkwing Duck was my favorite cartoon show as a kid. It only ran on Swedish television briefly before getting banned for it's cartoon violence, but I still kept old taped episodes on VHS that I would rewatch obsessively, in particular the episodes Stressed To Kill, Water Way To Go, In Like Blunt, Duck Blind, Night of the Living Spud and Time And Punishment. It was astounding how much the show kept getting funnier the older I got and came back to revisit it. It's influenced my own creative work immensely and I'm still amazed to this day by how many genres and tones the series managed to jump across. "Relentless and manic energy" with loads of heart sums it up perfectly.
@@ReverendMeat51 Yes, banned. In the mid 90's a little girl in Norway got killed by a group of boys apparently playing Power Rangers. After that, most major swedish television channels decided to stop airing any childrens shows that were considered violent. This ban eventually went away, but some of the specific shows that had been purged either didn't appear on TV ever again, or not untill more than a decade later. Darkwing was one of those shows that was off the air for years untill reruns started on Disney Channel sometime in the 00's. I've personally always suspected this temporary ban on violent kids shows was the reason Sweden never got Dragon Ball Z even though that show was making fortunes in other markets at the time. Instead, the show that defined a generation of anime fans in Sweden was Sailor Moon.
@@rattis On the positive side I feel like the ban really solidified Darkwing Duck into a particularly legendary status among Swedish fans. It was one of those things you would bring up among friends at school and everyone's eyes light up even though there was no way of watching it anymore. You sort of had to have been there when it was on the air to know what it was all about. Plus, the dubbing was outstanding. I stumble across the Swedish dub of the show once in a while and it still makes me laugh hysterically. The team of translators and voice actors were clearly appreciating the humor and were having a blast.
@@GrimyGrafhic 65 is the minimum number of episodes that the higher ups determined was necessary to run a show in syndication. So in the constantly short-term profit focused minds of the execs at the time that was how many episodes pretty much any show was allowed before they got axed.
Oh, how much I did love this show! Just looking at the cartoons shown in the first 10 minutes, I´d say today 95% of all shows can´t hold a candle to the 80s and 90s.
I remember the show very fondly. Like most superior shows, I was more interested in the villains than the hero. The episodes involving Darkwing Duck going into the Nega- verse and the time gosalyn travel into the future to meet Warrior Duck were some of my favorite episodes.
Launchpad really greased the wheels for this show for me, as I was a Duck Tales addict, and I had never seen a shared universe like this before. Long, LONG before we'd see anything like it again.
It's really cool seeing a video about an animated tv series that had such an impact on someone personally. Tim did a really great job on this you could feel how much of a passion project this was. I think we can all relate to something we enjoyed as a kid that we still have fond memories of. What's even better is when we rewatch them and it still holds up rather well. Truth be told that's not always the case as I've really loved and enjoyed shows as a kid that I've rewatched again as an adult that really haven't aged well or were very cheesy lol. Thankfully my main favorite shows as a kid have held up for me: X-men the animated series, Batman the animated series, and Gargoyles. There are other shows that I loved that had great concepts and potential like The Pirates of Dark Water that upon watching as adult seemed they may have had some good material chopped and left on the cutting room floor due to time constraints but still had some great moments and loved the world it created.
Those Boom Studios comics are REALLY good, and finally connect DuckTales and Darkwing Duck, though sadly the series soon ended after DuckTales comics came along. There was also a very well done Rescue Rangers comic. Highly recommend tracking them down.
Yes!! It's too bad the crossover between the two was later declared non-canon and therefore Morgana was never truly rescued in the series that followed.
I love this 90s cartoon! I am apart of the modern disney audience from the early 2000s to today,so the only way for me to watch DarkwingDuck was to watch it on Disney+. I wish there was more shows like this one. I watch DarkwingDuck over and over because my mom watched it as a kid. And i was curious so i watched it to,i never seen anything like it. I wish it had a movie. Too bad DarkwingDuck reruns didn't exsist on tv anymore in the 2010s when DisneyXD was popular. GravityFalls has always been the main show for me to watch in the 2010s. Also i LOVE the theme song!
I loved this show growing up (I was 11) and I still love it (I am 40 now) I'm glad people did there research but every one as adults seem to forget how it made them feel watching it. I always felt empowered and felt like I could take on the world. For once I'd like to see it enjoyed for how it was and not the comparisons to other franchises.
My favorite Disney afternoon cartoon (along with Gargoyles). I used to run home after school as fast as possible to make sure I heard the opening theme song. So much nostalgia wrapped up in these cartoons.
Disney plus has been a gold mine for me as I can watch, and share with my nephew, the Disney Afternoon shows I watched as a kid. Gummi Bears, DuckTales, Rescue Rangers, TaleSpin, DW, Goof Troop, Bonkers, Gargoyles, Timon and Pummba, even the one Saturday Morning shows like Recess. They were fun. My nephew also enjoys the new DuckTales, which is cool. We used to sit around watching Phineas and Ferb together. Darkwing has caught his interest
This was amazing. So in depth, I grew up loving this show and this retrospective is the best Christmas present i could get this year. Thank you Oliver and Tim. If you don't mind me asking, would you guys consider doing one of these for "Babylon 5"? Especially considering it's thankfully coming back :) But thank you and have a wonderful holiday guys.
Tim lacks emotions in his voice, something we've grown to love from Oliver But as retrospective this was a really good indepth video, thumbs up for sure
YES! I've been looking for just this kind of video on the topic of DW but never really found one (or at least not one that's longer than 10 minutes). Thank you for making this. and thanks, algorithm, I guess...
"I am the terror the flaps in the night. I am the bubblegum that sticks to your hair. I am... Darkwing Duck!", I loved this cartoon as a kid. "Suck gas evildoer!", is a catchphrase I still remember. So much fun.
Thank you, Tim, for making this and thanks for posting, it speaks right to my heart. It's nice to see someone putting a lot of effort covering old Disney shows. It's most likely banned these days for cartoon violence or something...
What an excellent review/retrospective of my favourite show growing up. It's fun to see that the show still holds up after so many years. I also was really happy with the Darkwing Duck centred episodes in DuckTales 2017. I really, really hope that the reboot turns out great. Also, here's some interesting trivia from a Swedish viewer of the show. The 3rd season was never dubbed into Swedish because there were a bunch of controversies surrounding it and similar shows at the time. The Looney Tunes-esque violence some parents thought was related to some high profile cases of children killing other children, so it was decided that the final season was not going to get a proper dub. As someone who was a masssive fan and only learned of this in my late teens in the 2000s, I was pretty darn bummed by knowing this. At least I got to rewatch the show on VHS so many times thanks to my mom recording it. :)
My favorite from the Disney Afternoon block. (What a time to be alive, btw) Great retrospective. My takeaway from this is how a show can be creative while still cribbing from established ideas. It's a tightrope not everyone can walk, and frankly its a lesson I wish more modern stuff would learn.
"Darkwing Duck" was one of my most favorite cartoons growing up, and my most favorite from the Disney Afternoon. You did an amazing job analyzing its production history and influence on others. Seeing the early concept art was especially interesting, considering the different designs for Darkwing/Double-O-Duck and Gosalyn, as well as Launchpad maintaining his original "Ducktales" look.
Darkwing Duck is what you get when you combine Donald Duck with Batman. DuckTales, Darkwing Duck, and Batman: The Animated Series (a non-Disney cartoon for adults, not just kids) were my favorite shows.

As a 7-8 year-old back in 1991 the show was just so much fun to watch. Disney needs to make the series into a next gen game. The possibilities for stories should be incredible. Most of the Original production team are still around and I'm sure they had plenty of unused episode ideas from 30 years ago. Great video.
This was a nice video, guys. I loved Darkwing Duck growing up and it's fun revisiting the Disney Afternoon shows on Disney plus now. I'm thinking of one day doing my own video series of the Disney Afternoon show by show. I'd like to use this video as a reference for some of my research. I'll give credit and a link, of course. Anyway, great job! Let's get dangerous.
As someone who was a fan of Darkwing Duck in the Disney Afternoon era in its prime (my mom made me a cape!) AND as a current resident of Edmonton, the note at the end gave me an unexpected jumpscare ❤
I think my favourite little fact about this show is that Jim Cunnings would often ad-lib the middle part of Darkwing's intro speech, to the point where one script had a few options plus a line that said "Or whatever Jim comes up with".

Oh I'm gonna enjoy this. I started watching this show not as a kid, but as an adult who's already had more than enough cape comics content condensed into his cranium for countless contrails of conversation!(alliteration, here's to you DW)
I love the series and most everything it does
What a wonderful retrospective! It ranks up there with the one by E-Rod a few years back 🙂👍
More Boomer influence: Herb's shed was probably a reference to Fibber McGee's closet. Great research and narration as always.
Wow it's crazy how you can piece your childhood ....watching this like yeah I remember that!!!
I actually used to say “let’s get dangerous” before a sticks lane in the military. I forgot where I got it from though. This was a nice treat.
