I love that moment when Beetlejuice asks Lydia "Why?" Just briefly, he's completely genuine.
I’m glad somebody brought that up I always felt that way too it’s the subtle moments in films sometimes
Yeah I thought same.
He reminds me of Charles Manson or some scam artist asking for money
Michael Keaton is one of the most underrated actors of the last 40 years.
Michael Keaton's performance as Beetlejuice could had influenced Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker.
Underused, but not underrated.
Like anyone could ever really know that
@@danielwilliamson6180 Heath Ledger would make an amazing Beetlejuice for a sequel.
No he's regarded as one of the best of his generation.. But he should have an Oscar..
I remember seeing this film as a kid and being blown away by its visuals and Michael Keaton's crazy, live wire performance as Beetlejuice. Just saw the movie again a few months back and it still holds up quite well.
It’s interesting because to get these visuals in the past they required a lot of work so people had to pick really good actors to do everything, time is money on one hand but also you wanted strong performances to carry the illusion all the way home. Depressing what banal performances carry most movies now.
@@kingVibe111 oh gimme a break. There were plenty of “banal” performances back then as well, probably more. Comparing the highly successful movies of the past to bad movies now is pretty banal in itself. “Most movies” back then were knocked for exactly what you are knocking and there are probably far more good movies now than there were back then. Lets not act like the 80s were not completely packed with absolutely shite just because we have some favorites that were made at the time as well.
Did you rewatch it "three" times? hehe!
The spelling "Betelgeuse" is a star astronomy snobs (guilty) insist is properly pronounced "Beetlejuice". I've read that the title was changed to the latter spelling so that the public would know going in. Even the film makes a bit of a joke about it; "call Beetle-Guise..."
It’s also spelled that way because Beetlejuice made the signs and he can’t say it or spell it.
It's also known as the "armpit" of Orion.
I wouldn't say snob, words imported from other languages often have funny spellings. You wouldn't call Irish people snobs for pronouncing the name "Siobhan" like "Shivon".
Bay-tel-goy-zuh is how it would be pronounced in German.
Beetle-juice is quite sour, ever seen that episode of man VS wild when bear bites into the grub the size of a banana? That's what I think of everytime.
I always assumed Lydia’s mom died and her dad married a weirdo in his grief to fill a void. That’s why Lydia became obsessed with death and wanted to be dead too.
Plus I'm pretty sure she never calls her "Mom".
@@BmanTheChamp You’re right. Adam refers to her as her mother and Lydia quickly replies “stepmother.”
@@BmanTheChamp 100% correct my friend
Me too
There is definitely a step-mom vibe to Delia Deetz.
"Scared Sheetless" ... brilliant!
The one thing I learned in life is to never give a client the 'obvious bumb choice', they'll pick it every time.
When you say "client" what do you do? Prostitution?
Micheal Keaton was robbed of an Oscar for this movie and he was robbed again for Birdman.
Absolute legend.
Amazing actor , was also the start of the Summer Blockbuster , with fast food tie ins etc , with Batman...I remember going to watch it with kids from my local comic shop. It changed my world even though I was young. He is even better now :)
Coolest User name ever. You win the internet.
@@dongeraci8599 it’s funny too because in the Beetlejuice cartoon, he turned into Grimdiana Bones in a couple of episodes.
Love your username sir!
He steals his debut movie too
"Betelgeuse" is the name of a star. It means "the Hand of Orion". It's also mentioned in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".
@Jangler333 You sound like an idiot.
In the video, I say "they settled on Beetlejuice though it's spelled Betelgeuse in the film, no idea why" I'm not asking what is a Betelgeuse?. With it being the name of a star has no relation to the film.
@@OliverHarper I mean, it's clear that the character is named after the star but the filmmakers knew most people wouldn't know how to pronounce it so they named the movie after the phonetic pronunciation. Most of the characters in the movie don't even know how to pronounce it. It's such an obvious thing that I didn't understand why you would even question it. If they called it "Betelgeuse", hardly anyone would've watched it because most people are fucking morons.
@@OliverHarper, it’s also Arabic, which the character was originally conceived as.
It's spelled that way because it's named after the star. For God sake it was on Entertainment Tonight when movie came out. It's common knowledge and if he hadn't explained to you what it was I would have!!!!!
You said spelled that way not sure why, WELL HE TOLD YOU WHY!!
The cartoon was a good enough sequel for me.
I'm appreciative of your shout outs to it.
Michael Keaton and young missy Ryder make this film.
Great review
Yes, for me too. I got whatever extra I wanted from the cartoons, the movie is a greater stand alone one with every year that passes. At least because it is very rare that this kind of movie doesn't eventually get a sequel or prequel or reboot.
According to Keaton that is still his favourite part. He filmed it in just 2 weeks and apparently had a ball!!! Shame we never got that sequel....
Less is more
Don't be so sure about that sequel because as long as Keaton and Burton are still alive there is a chance for a sequel especially with Keaton back as Batman again now.
History repeats itself since there's another coming out and keaton filmed his stuff in the uk in two weeks
Love this film, and wow Geena Davis looks amazing
"Transylvania 6-5000" re: Geena Davis looking good. A film I remember only because of how hot Geena Davis is. Had a casual girlfriend who could've been a twin, little shorter, but she wound up becoming a tattoo artist, and was actually on some reality show about that line of work, years after we parted ways. I never watched the show, but heard through the grapevine. Sure she has a decent time finding suitors, so I've always avoided the urge to reconnect. I'm not unlisted. Sorta how I always look at it.
Michael Keaton is an amazing Versatile Actor! People didn't believe in him when he was casted as Batman / Bruce Wayne but he proved them wrong and in his later work he proved himself as a damn good Dramatic actor in films like : Clean and Sober, Spotlight, Birdman, My Life and The Founder.
I really love this movie. It’s one of my favorite movies but also one of my favorite Tim Burton movies. Michael Keaton really killed it as Beetlejuice and the soundtrack is iconic.
Watched this movie for the first time this halloween. I can't believe I've slept on it for so long. It's now one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I wish there were more movies similar to this, but other than maybe Corpse Bride I think this one is completely unique.
You always choose the most interesting and intriguing movies to do retrospectives on. Thank you sir!
Great comment 🙏
Agreed...
I've probably seen this movie more times than any other movie in my life. I used to have my dad put this VHS in at least once a week while eating lunch. He'd ask what we wanted to watch while eating, and me and my sister would always be like "Beetlejuice!!" It was wierd to me that Beetlejuice was actually the villain in this film, meanwhile as a kid i always saw him as the GOOD guy. Then i fell in love with the cartoon, even memorized all the score background music.
I never thought of it like that, but so did we. I think the cartoon had a lot to do with that, even though I did see the movie in theatres butat 8 years old, I was a bit too young to pick up on much of the humor (except for the "Nice f'in model!" line of course.)
Well, "Beetlejuice II" is coming and they are rebuilding the sets in the town (and restoring old facades and lost real buildings). If they are clever, they leave the family home on the hill this time for tourists to visit.
I love how you often go into detail regarding a film's merchandise/spin-offs/videogames etc. You always deliver the most interesting tidbits with these parts.
Its one of the only films in history where any faults do not matter. Watched it about 10 times now and never bored of it.
Just fun and creative. Danny Elfman's score is memorable as well. You know I always thought the lyrics for the song Day O was, "They like woman with mango".
One of Tim Burton’s best movies right up there with Sleepy Hallow, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorshand, Big Fish and Corpse Bride.
Waaay better than those. Up there w batman
The next Tim burton movie u should try next is Sleepy Hollow
Then The Room.
100% he should!
Co-signed.
Agreed
I like Sleepy Hollow but knowing full well it is all macabre eye candy, with a terribly weak story; it's a poor "adaptation" of a classic American tale.
"Its gonna be difficult to do a Beetlejuice sequel"
Burton:Aight bet
Fun Fact: Michael Keaton based his performance of Beetlejuice on Chop Top from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986).
After the amount of Lock Down we have seen, this film and the idea of being stuck in your house for 125 years now makes this film even more scary.
True!
Beetlejuice is one of my favorite movies of all time I think it’s a masterpiece
This movie has a charm that I simply can't put into words. Love Beetlejuice.
This and the cartoon was stupid awesomeness of late 80s pop culture.
I've been a subscriber for a long time and I love your videos. I'm honestly a bit surprised to say that I have added no less than 51 films to my collection in the last month! Your videos were definitely a major influence, as always, in expanding and diversifying my home video library. Keep up the great work, mate.
Amazing soundtrack, score & cinematography!
One of my favorites
By far the best reviews of the movies we love on UA-cam . Oliver you need to be at 1 Mill subs . Thx for all the hard work you put into these, head and shoulders above the rest :)
About Siskel and Ebert's review of Beetlejuice, they called it a "Ghostbusters" clone. Where the hell did that come from?
An example of the phrase that everybody's a critic.
Probably the same place as their hate of 80s horror movies, specifically slashers, with them saying kids would get out of the theatres with a desire to stab everyone. A lot of their reviews were absurd, filed by an inflated sense of self-importance and shitty arguments.
@@Palmieres Channel Awesome sucks.
@@Palmieres Nostalgia Critic is far worse.
@@Palmieres He did an episode on S&E when he gives them nothing but high praise, completely ignoring their flaws. I mean, I actually do like them outside of their shitty anti-slasher campaign. It's just that I don't jerk off to them like Nostalgia Critic does.
13:52 I always assumed it was spelt Betelgeuse because its in Olde English or from an old Germanic folk-tale seeing as he'd been around a long time!
Just wanted to say Keatons performance is so good in this! Hilarious yet creepy.
Nope. Betelgeuse is a star.
Beetlegeuse is the Arabic name for the star on the shoulder of the constellation Orion. In Arabic, it means “armpit of the giant.” In the Dune novels, the planet Arrakis (also called Dune) orbits the Star Beetlegeuse, and it is covered with sand worms. Yes, this movie has a huge Dune reference.
Danny Elfman is so good at soundtracks he can even make me want to remember the Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movies (the score was the only salvageable thing about them. Well, maybe the design for the Cat).
This is Michael Keaton's favorite film of his own
Michael Keaton, playing the title character, only appears in 14.5 minutes of the film.
Catherine O'Hara met her future husband, production designer Bo Welch, while making this film. According to Welch, Tim Burton said he should ask her out near the end of filming: "It didn't even occur to me that I was even supposed to talk to actors. But since Tim told me to I did and then we dated and we're married and here we are today."
The casting of Lydia came down to just two actresses, namely, Winona Ryder and Alyssa Milano, with Ryder ultimately landing the role.
The film won a Saturn Award in 1990 for best horror movie.
Juliette Lewis auditioned for the role of Lydia. Lori Loughlin, Diane Lane, Sarah Jessica Parker, Brooke Shields, Justine Bateman, Molly Ringwald, and Jennifer Connelly all turned down the same role.
Alec Baldwin dislikes the film and was very unhappy with his performance.
Adam's black and white checkered shirt is the same one worn by Tom Selleck in Three Men and a Baby (1987).
Winona Ryder was cast on the strength of her performance in Lucas (1986).
It is hinted throughout the movie that Lydia could be suffering from depression, particularly when Lydia writes a suicide note to Adam and Barbara that she feels utterly alone.
In Beetlejuice's forced wedding, Lydia's dress is bright red. According to the old rhyme about wedding dress colors: "Married in red, better off dead."
Heather Langenkamp was considered for the role of Lydia after Tim Burton saw her in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).
Langenkamp turned the part down because she didn't want to play a goth girl.
The title character is named for a bright red star in the constellation of Orion, Betelgeuse.
All the people in the waiting room and in the office are in the same condition as when they died, and the way they died is shown clearly. However, the Maitlands, who drowned, are not wet. Tim Burton felt that keeping the actors wet all the time would be too uncomfortable.
Jeffrey Jones is the creepiest thing about this movie.
I'm honestly surprised as hell he didn't bring that up...
@@TaglitoFilms It would have been a negative distraction right in the middle of the review.
@Paul And that too!
@@WolfStrife Fair enough.
@Paul Also fair enough.
The magician’s assistant In the waiting room who was sawed in half, the lower legs were played by Tim Burton’s then girlfriend.
Another random fact: When Glen Shadix passed on, they played Harry Belafonte’s Day O at his funeral
Amazing how Ghostbusters really set the bar high for comedy/horror!
But couldnt hold it up.
13:50 Betelgeuse is the name of a star, presumably he just describes it as Beetlejuice because it's easier to charade.
Also worth mentioning, they're homophones.
In the video, I say "they settled on Beetlejuice though it's spelled Betelgeuse in the film, no idea why" I'm not asking what is a Betelgeuse?. With it being the name of a star has no relation to the film.
Beetlejuice was a big part of my childhood. I personally think it's Burton's best work. The movie holds up over 30 years later. Still relevant, funny, and weird.
I saw 'Beetlejuice' in a theater when it first opened. I'd never seen anything quite like it, and laughed myself silly - especially during the 'Day-O' dinner scene. Everyone in the film is perfectly cast, Burton's love of German Expressionism is on clear display, and both the script and the score are marvelous. I still enjoy watching it from time to time, as its charm hasn't worn off.
A classic.. Some of Michael Keaton's most amazing and manic work.. Tim Burton was a director to be reckoned with after this unusual and highly entertaining flick..
BeetleJuice is one of my favourite movies growing up. I watched it as a little kid in the 90s, and it was totally brilliant. It’s definitely, a one-of-a-kind movie.
Thank you for this amazing retrospective
Adore beetlejuice. Loved the cartoon and beetlejuice was still part of universal studios characters in Florida when I visited a couple years ago ! Another fine retrospective review... thanks 🙏
13:53 Betelgeuse’s pronunciation is “beetle-juice.” It is a a star in the Orion constellation.
Yup. One of the largest suns in our galaxy.
I was going to comment, then I thought "Did someone else say this." Now I don't have to.
10 seconds in Google would have answered this one. Come on Oliver.
In the video, I say "they settled on Beetlejuice though it's spelled Betelgeuse in the film, no idea why" I'm not asking what is a Betelgeuse?. With it being the name of a star has no relation to the film.
@@OliverHarper, even though the spelling makes it sound like the way you pronounced it, it’s still incorrect. The name would have tied into the initial Arabic roots of the character. This is a big reason I want to see that documentary about the movie because we hardly have anything to examine the creation of it.
This was in my reccomendations after repeatedly watching the BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE trailer
I was today years old when I found out that the lead singer to Oingo Boingo is THE Danny Elfman. 😮
Weird science 🤯
He's really a magical man. One of those people who seem like they must have come from space or something like the band in Interstella 5555.
Classic from top to bottom
Script, direction/director, acting, VFX, score etc! Loved this when I was 8/9? Quality Pic & Retrospective
Forgot how much I love the soundtrack to this film, seriously underapriciated
Just to let you know. In the theater, the title of the film was Betelguise. The spelling was changed to Beetlejuice for the VHS and later DVD releases and showings on TV. The original spelling denoting the star Betelguise is still within the movie with the fliers and other printed signage within.
Another great Retrospective/Review episode. Also, I like the new photo Oliver
One of my favourite movies ever. I also used to watch the cartoon which was pretty fun at the time. Love the score, iconic in fact. its funny watching this in 2024 when the trailer for Beetlejuice 2 has been released. Ill reserve my judgement until it actually comes out. for now ill just enjoy living in my memories
Got to see this in theatres on 1988. Great movie
I saw this movie at 6 years old. First time I heard the f word in a PG. it's still in my top ten
Total nostalgia
Sylvia Sidney had a career dating back to the early 1930s her first leading role was in a 1931 gangster flick after that she appeared in many films throughout the 1930s
Waking up to a Oliver Harper Retrospective upload makes my day so much better
Betelguese is the name of a star (which I believe is also pronounced "Beetlejuice"?) and stars play a role in the occult and Ars Goetia demonology from the middle ages. Part of that same demonology draws from ancient middle Eastern mysticism and religion (Astaroth being derived from Ishtar, Beelzebub from Ba'el, etc.) so it makes sense to me that Beetlejuice's first draft looked the way Oliver describes. It also suggests that Beetlejuice was never human in the story, but some kind of demon or imp.
This Glorious movie was just the wildest thing I had ever seen as a teenager
This film will always be a classic and will get better with time.
Each and every one of your videos is pure gold... thanks for the ride down memory lane... love this movie and remember watching it for the very first time on VHS, a bit older than you. Regards from Argentina and keep up the awesome work you do!
I think a sequel these days could work even with the original being 33 yrs old now. The Maitlands are stuck in that house for 150 years, so the sequel is set in the present day, Charles and Delia Deets have passed on, and left the house to Lydia. Lets say since the first film, she's moved on, had a career and family of her own, but now returns to the Maitlands home. Perhaps, her children or maybe even husband/wife inadvertently re-releases Bettlejuice. Bettlejuice still holds a grudge against Lydia, which extends to her family of course. During the film we find out that at some other time he got back at the Maitlands somehow and got them exercised, which would explain Gina davis and Alec Baldwins age progression. Bettlejuice causes havoc and mayhem, as he's wont to do, in Lydias life and around the town, perhaps he wants to take over the whole town, or simply take back Lydia, or take revenge by taking her family. Something like that. Boom. Where's my check?
One of my all time favourites. Just the balance between being a little scared and comedy. Tim Burton’s specialty. Elfman really makes this film with his score. It’s majestic. Brilliant work again Oliver
Lydia was one of my childhood waifus.
This was an enjoyable, entertaining surreal fever dream of a movie. Hopefully there will never be a remake or a sequel to it. That there is one movie that encapsulates the collective artistry makes it so special and unique.
You need to do Drop Dead Fred soon. Phoebe Cates and the late, great Legendary Rik Mayall.
I once got stuck behind Beetlejuice while trying to get to the toilets in coco bongo club in Mexico.....great times 😆😆
And now we are week away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice! have literally waited my whole life for this ❤
The best Movie Reviews/Documentaries on the net! Thanks for these!
This movie makes me wonder if Keaton would have rather played the Joker. He seems to have an absolute blast playing crazy.
This by far is one of my favorite kids movies..
Actually I don't know could you call this a kids movie probably right ?!?
When I was twelve, my favourite film was Robocop. An absolute class of it's own classic, combining sci fi with gritty reality.
It’s not a kids movie.
@@thefonz5466 Back then this was considered a kids movie it wasn't like a little 5 year old but like 10/11/12/13 year olds
Everything wasn't so PC like it is
now
Obviously it was still enjoyable for grown UPS too but that's not who it was geared towards
I don't think there's too much in this film to scar kids. It's basically a live-action cartoon.
@@187mrsmith I don't think the part where Keaton grabs himself making a honking noise is very child friendly.
One of my childhood favorites Beetlejuice
I disagree about Burton. Beetlejuice, and his films of the 90s (Particularly the early 90s) were his best work. He has become a shadow of himself now, and only markets off his style. He seems to have lost his creativity that made him great.
Patricia Martinez who played Miss Argentina worked with a cousin of mine in a theater group in New Mexico. She also passed away in 2018
I think Sleepy Hollow was the turning point for his work; he really went full Hollywood after that. But I've found other filmmakers to fill the void, like the Quay Brothers and Jan Svankmejer.
He's more hit or miss he still does some great stuff but for every great one, there is a Hollywood one as well. That doesn't mean his Hollywood flicks are bad though because big blockbuster Burton can be fun too.
One of the first non-Disney films I recall watching as a kid
I didn’t know Beetlejuice was going to be a darker including Universal as the original distributor.
Such a great movie. Michael Keaton kills it in this!
Back when the LaserDisc was first released I used it to demonstrate the superior nature of the format over VHS. It's stunning, and was far less expensive than the VHS release.
Betelgeuse is a real name of the tenth brightest star in the sky and it's in the constellation of Orion.
Been thinking about this film a lot lately while being unable to watch it but seeing a retrospective from you is a welcomed consolation prize!
I come from a Berensteyn universe where Oliver made the Beetlejuice retrospective years ago. Does anyone else also remember that happened already?
As a child of the 90's I watched the cartoon first then discovered the VHS of the movie later when I was older and allowed to watch it.
This movie was on regular rotation on cable when I was a kid. Still such an insane movie that wouldn't be made today. I don't know what it is about Burton's early work that made it so wacky yet accessible to a mass audience.
The reason the name BETELGEUSE is spelled BEETLEJUICE is for marketing. Also, it's easier to pronounce that way, compared to the pronunciation of the name of the star in the constellation of Orion.
When I was kid, I first discovered Beetlejuice from the TV show adaptation. And I loved it! Then when I heard there was a live action adaption of the show, I REALLY wanted to see it! But sadly, my parents said "no" lol they kept telling me, its too scary. But I didn't care if it was really scary or not, I loved Beetlejuice and I wanted to see the film so bad. Luckily, one of my best friends had it on VHS, and he warned me, "You're in for a surprise!" I saw it, and it scared the SHIT outta me lmao and I LOVED it for that! Beetlejuice is definitely one of Tim's BEST work! I would love to see one more Beetlejuice film! With Tim directing and Micheal Keaton as Beetlejuice especially! If they're not involved, for get it! It's impossible without them!
As for the Betelgeuse/Beetlejuice confusion, I think I have an explanation.
His name is Betelgeuse, but because he can't say his own name he resorts to miming. So... since Betelgeuse seems hard to pronounce, then part of the suspense with his character is having people guess his name. (Not unlike Rumplestiltskin).
So... Beetlejuice/Beetle Juice clears up any confusion.
Ralph Fiennes pronounces his first name Raeph, but because his last name starts with an F... anyone simply hearing his name thinks his name is Ray Fiennes.
So long story short, Ralph is to RayF
As Betelgeuse is to Beetlejuice.
Request for Short Circuit Retrospective Review attempt #14.
Anyone else immediately put this on after watching Oliver’s review?
I gotta be in a certain mood for Tim burton. I watched nightmare before Christmas and aliens on Halloween. Should’ve put this one on too but totally forgot about it!
No. But I might have paused it a couple of times to go watch specific scenes LOL
Nah I'm good, I literally watched beetlejuice over 20 times this October, I even went as him this year. Lol but I get where you are coming from.
No. Playing "Until Dawn" while listening to the video.
Oliver this might be your very best, and I have been watching for YEARS...
Not every movie needs a sequel!
I had only seen it once until last night. Just as great as I remembered. It feels so right that it doesn't have a sequel. It enhances it.
Major News: a sequel is coming and it's called "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice."
my favorite Burton movie , and I love Winona Ryder , the rest of the cast was amazing too specially Michael Keaton
Saw it when it first came out when I was 9... and it taught me the word "fuck". Even though he only said it once: "Nice fuckin' model" it stuck with me to the degree that I repeated it (complete with the ball-honking thing he does afterward) and got in a tiny bit of trouble for it, only then finding out that it was one of those infamous "bad words".
This Oliver Harper Retrospective Review reads like stereo instructions.
Roger Ebert would be proud if these reviews. Great job!
FINALLY! Oliver gets back to what got him to the dance. The reason we all subscribed in the first place!
Can't wait for a review of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Love the movie. The poster hang on the wall in my room for 5-6 years into the early 1990s. Elfmans score is outstanding!
