My prediction is that Tacoma loyalists will defend the new Tacoma while secretly searching for a clean 3rd gen to buy back into......ill just give it a couple years for Toyota to hammer out the kinks. I'd still buy a Toyota turboed vehicle before an American designed time bomb.

Or people who believe that Hybrid or turbo engines are good for big trucks as long they make more horsepower than the old engines and get better gas mileage, like Doug Demuro.

TFL Tacoma, front wheels of the 4x4 mode snapped mechanically. Toyota been building 4x4 for years, the truck becoming 2 wheel drive from mechanical break is a huge red flag. It wasn't over pushed and went through the same testing of one of the employees personal chev. Colorado trailboss, yet it broke. They have lowered their quality of materials on the new models.

Truck manufacturer's obsession with small over-engineered turbo powered engines makes no sense whatsoever. Turbos are great for Sports cars and diesels, but gasoline Trucks and SUV's are nonsense. Toyota/Lexus reliability will fall off a cliff now, because there is so way to keep the oil from baking around the turbo bearings without letting the engine idle down for a couple of minutes before being turned off. Imagine having to do that when running errands, getting fuel, etc. No thanks, I'll stick with normally aspirated.

@@trainfan998 gladly, this new "crappy 4 cylinder turbo engine" makes that same horsepower as the outdated V6 but over 50ft lbs more torque. It makes peak torque at only 1,700 rpm... That is significantly better than an engine Toyota has developed, even their diesels overseas. The frame is stronger, coil over rear suspension, disc brakes in the rear, more ground clearance (OR models), more head room, better seating position, lighter body, better sound system, better approach and departure angles (OR models), and several other upgrades. Toyota is known for building reliable four cylinder engines and this one is no exception. This engine has been used for years in their Lexus sports cars and is build using industrial standards. Noone complained about the 2.2 or 2.7 four cylinder engines when they released, so why is this four cylinder all of a sudden "crappy"? My theory is that people are uneducated or maybe they're just jealous. Either way, I'm glad to see Toyota building an updated truck for the American market.

1st Reliability concern you are aware this engine has been tested in other markets prior to release Toyota has an R&D group bigger then most manufactures so do your research. 2nd all suspension under heavy abuse is prone to break down it is cheaper to build leaf spring but to fix that is not a verified thing next please. 3rd tech this is a issue across all new vehicle's next please and previous model issues don't mean issues on the next model that is an assumption. If you wanna go off-roading go trash an older model and leave this thing on the trails its a new truck you wanna rock crawl with and trash go talk to whistling diesel. thumbs down this garbage full of assumptions.

A lot of false information here. The new turbo 4 is derived by toyotas tried and true 2.5 4 cylinder found in most toyotas. It has been beefed up internally to handle boost. This isnt some weak NA engine they slapped a turbo on. The V6 has way more moving parts than the new truck. When does 6 cylinders have less parts that a 4 cylinder? The V6 has two heads, 4 cams, 12 fuel injectors, electronic waterpump. The new turbo 4 has one head, 2 cams, 8 injectors, mechanical waterpump. The turbo systems is an exhaust manifold adapted to fit a turbine between the header and downpipe to the exhaust. No moving parts except the turbo and this turbo is vacuum controlled not electronic like the one that failed in the tundra and even that was a software problem. Lets not forget about the weak leaf springs in the 3rd gen. 900lbs of payload is awful. While the new truck is a spring design with 1200lbs of payload
