Base trim King Cab Nissan Frontier, for me. Simpler mechanicals, steel bed, analog gauges, simple climate controls, small screen, conventional gear lever... easy win.
All the above with a LOCKER! I have a 2.7 in my work 1/2 ton and I average 21mpgs. It's loaded up all the time with gear too. The Ranger should be better in all ways.
What a great video!!! I am a ford f150 guy but have been thinking about the Colorado trail boss. This video provides great insight and reinforces some of my thoughts. Thank you!
Edmunds Cars: GM has full time 4 wheel drive. Have to go to Limited trim in Taco and Ranger Raptor to get that. No ventilated seats in Ranger either. No rear vent in Ranger. Rear seat space in Taco is much smaller than other two. GMC Canyon offers more value than the others in my opinion while Ranger has best proven powertrain. Ranger styling is way too conservative too, others much more aggressive.
In Europe, they have started deducting safety points (stars) from vehicles that have basic functions like HVAC hidden in the screen. Hopefully, this approach will catch on over here.
I have a 2022 Colorado myself. Z71 fully loaded. My buddy has a 2022 tacoma TRDpro. We kept arguing about who's was better so we both took a ride in each, drove each ourselves. Judged them on everything and even raced them. We both agreed my Colorado was better in almost every single category, even winning the race, gas mileage, and having the nicer interior. We agreed the ride was smoother and a nicer drive than the tacoma, but being the TRDpro his was better offload, especially since I had street tires and he had all terrains
I had a 2011 f150 3.5 Ecoboost with 225k when one of the turbos was on its way out. Super clean and reliable truck. Super hesitant on all these new ones with turbos and stuff that will eventually fail. Electronics won't be dyi friendly. Parts and everything definitely higher prices for maintenance. I own a 94 bmw 325is with 275k miles easy to maintain and cheap. Been looking for older Tacoma's and no one wants to sell them lol but I might pull the trigger on this 2024 Tacoma
I'm definitely between the Colorado and the Ranger. I prefer the look of the Colorado and the offroad features + 4-Auto (which I use both quite a bit), but I like the quality, powertrain, and day to day features of the Ranger. Tough choice... will have to go with my gut feeling! or maybe will be based on if one of them has a nice discount at the time of purchase :) P.S. I really don't mind the headlight controls on the chevy. Having owned a tesla, it's not an issue at all.
im a toyota person but the Ranger is a world platform all over the world, and proven to bad we cant get the diesel here...was driving one in Vietnam a couple weeks ago great vehicle
I was going to say the same. I like physical controls but on all of my vehicles including the 12 year old F-150 I leave it auto year round. Almost everyone auto lights with wipers on too.
It’s a meme and these reviewers feel like they need to mention it for credibility. That’s the only explanation I can muster. I’ve also owned a Colorado for 6 months now and never touched it. Auto is fine.
Right!? I've had mine for a little over a month and have yet to notice there's no physical switch because there's no need to even touch it. Even before that I had a grand Cherokee with a dial and never touched it. They act like automatic lights don't exist
Since I commented before I saw a reviewer mentioned they need to mess with the lights a lot for pictures and footage reasons. But again, it’s not something a normal user experiences
I agree. Given that the GM twins are equipped with auto headlights, the headlight switch being moved to the infotainment screen is a non-issue. If we are going to nitpick, a much bigger miss is the fixed rear seatback and the manual sliding rear window on all trim levels including the Canyon Denali. This is inexcusable on a $40-60K truck.
Colorado Z71 here, not once needed to use the manual headlights in the screen, for day to day it's not a problem, it's easy to pick it out without owning one. Awesome video!
Don't get why every reviewer acts like the headlight switch is a big deal. Haven't had to touch the headlight switch in over 20 years with GM's auto headlights.
Same here. And some of the other brands dont have auto lights and see them at night with no lights on just daytime running lights. Mostly foreign brands
I would have to touch it almost daily going through security gates at night so you don't blind security. I also often travel in Safety Corridors that require your lights on during the day. That is one expensive light switch if and when it fails as you have to fix it, no option if you're going to drive at night or even some places during the day. This is an absolutely horrible idea!
@@robhtwo There's so much functionality controlled by the touchscreen in any of these trucks, if it fails you are going to have to get it fixed. It's not like the light controls on the Colorado screen are going to fail all by themselves.
@@jeffreyjohnson3103 I'm not aware of any other settings I need to change on the screen to safely drive it if the screen stops working. What other functions do I need to change when I'm driving? It's not like it's the ECU/ECM.
none of these have a V6, the Frontier outshines all of these, the larger displacement has less wear over time compared to a 4 cylinder running at a higher RPM to get the same power, that's why the previous Toyota engines in V6 and V8 last so long, they run at lower rpms, this new 4 banger in all these models shown will not have the longevity compared to a NA engine, also Dont forgot to factor in the cost of a turbo replacement can be 3-4K$ so what ever fuel savings you make, keep it handy
GREAT REVIEW!!! Felt like you were really honest and unbiased in your review of these trucks! Really helped me make up my mind. Keep up the good work and yes you were funny too.
Last year I was ready to get a Tacoma but went to Chevy dealership next door I wanted to checkout the nice looking red stripe on black Colorado displayed at the front of dealer. I bought the Colorado. Love it! No regrets.

I have 27,000 miles on my '23 Colorado, the headlight switch is a non-issue when you actually drive the vehicle daily. It takes as much time and effort as moving your left hand down and turning a knob. On the other hand, I can't imagine having to use the screen to lock diffs, turn on ventilated seats, etc, like on the Ranger!
The Chevy Colorado's available towing capacity is 7,700 models, but models like the ZR2 can only tow 6,000 pounds. The Ford Ranger maxes out at 7,500 pounds, but its Raptor model only musters 5,000 pounds of towing capability.
Because off road models ride is meant for bumps not towing . Apples and oranges . Better towing capacity means rougher ride off-road. Like an f150 vs a f250
@ElementoftheGods3094 yes I know. Jfc It's an. exaggerated example of a vehicle having heavier suspension for towing vs one that's not. Clearly some don't understand why the zr2 is rated to tow less lol and act like it's a bug when it's am actual feature

Wish I could enjoy such good looking off-road beasts honestly. Love my Maverick, but the days of it being a mid 20k purchase are long gone, unless you buy it barbone... And that's no way to live. If you are single and are financially responsible before a vehicle purchase, dishing out 10k+ more for one of these midsizers makes sense to me. Then again, I'm sure someone with a maverick AWD or tremor would disagree. Maybe I'm the true idiot for going fully loaded hybrid 🥴
@@VulcanXIV Definitely not, I think in 24 about 50% build were hybrid. With AWD being available in hybrid, I see that percentage going up. I was on the fence and actually waiting for the AWD with hybrid. When Ford made it a $1500 option and I actually sat down and did the numbers, it was a no brainier. That was for me living in rural and Midwest with snow the AWD and AT tires were a must. So given that the eco was 29 hwy vs hybrid 33 FWD hwy I ordered the ecoboost. I think one's driving needs, location and requirements (towing, payload, off road) defines one's purchase. If it doesn't satisfy these needs the consumer is looking for something that will.
Great review. Would've liked to see a Frontier in the mix. I'm disappointed in a few things with the Toyota, the biggest of which is the cabin is still really small, especially for as big as the truck is! I feel like the Frontier offers a lot of equivalency to the Tacoma for much less money. The Ford and Chevy are the better trucks, but I'd like to see what they are like at 10 years old with 100,000 miles on them. As for the lights in the Colorado, yeah, they won't get touched. I have a 20 year old Malibu and I don't think the lights have ever been off auto!
Just bought a 2024 Canyon Elevation for 40k pretty well equipped. Liked the 11 inch driver screen standard as well as the factory 2 inch lift. We also have a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport with 135k miles which has never seen the shop for anything but routine maintenance, so switching to the GMC is a leap of faith. I couldn't get past the steep price increase (Paid 31.5k for my Tacoma, and similiarly equipped 2024 was going to run 47k), the inability to order a truck exactly as we wanted it spec-ed, and that new engine looks atrocious with the plethora of potentially leaky hoses. Time will tell obviously.
You lost me when you began praising Fords back up technology. Considering that Ford has been the most recalled auto manufacturer in the world over the last four years, and the litany of problems they are having with $70,000 bronco engines failing, bronco sports with rear end problems and F-150 Lightning trucks with only fractional range, we need less technology and more durability and reliability.
Great review but one thing I’d like to point out. The specific Tacoma you’re reviewing doesn’t have wireless charging. They’ve got an option for it but unfortunately the one you’re reviewing isn’t equipped with it which is why you’re unable to get it to work. I had a Tacoma as a loaner this past week and it was great, I need to test drive the three trucks mentioned here but I liked the Tacoma for the week I had it.

I got it loaded (Convenience II, Safety, Tech, Adv Trailering, 20" Wheel, spray in bed liner), it was also much cheaper than a comparably equipped Ranger. The TB has a factory 2" lift and can be flat-towed behind a motor home. Neither the Ford or the Toyota can be flat-towed.
I bought a Colorado in June and it has been back at the dealer for close to a month with injector and quality problems. GM knows of the problems but either doesn’t have a solution or the replacement parts are not available. Now what do I do?
I find the Chevy and Toyota are trying way too hard with the styling. They look like they are trying to make real life versions of something they sell at a toy store.
Owned a 2O Tacoma TRD for 13 years, was a care-free truck, overdrive it - just got a ‘24 Canyon AT4, love it, but big shoes to fill where reliability is concerned. No sunroof in the Ranger made my decision.

you are for real. most b will tow once in awhile only or maybe never. If you really want the truck to work buy a toyota for reliability and suffer the ride otherwise cruise into the work parking lot in a stunner.
Hold up a bit on the Tacoma. The new ones are too expensive and if the new Taco is as reliable as the new Tundra, that would not be good. Toyota has lost their way with trucks, that’s what happens when you try to copy Ford.

The Frontier is severely underrated

Very close competition, all three are really nice trucks. My preference would be the Ranger equipped with the V6 twin turbo engine.
Thank you!
I went with a new frontier and I love it
Edmunds Cars: GM has full time 4 wheel drive.
Haha I prefer the less aggressive look. To each their own
Buttons instead of screens all the way! Everyone will be getting into accidents fooling around with their truck televisions. How is that legal.
Still have my 2004 Toyota Tacoma here. Still running strong. If buying today, it would be the Colorado.
2005 Tundra double cab TRD. Not selling it.

I'd probably get the Nissan Frontier because its the only one with a naturally asperated V6

Tough choice... will have to go with my gut feeling! or maybe will be based on if one of them has a nice discount at the time of purchase :) P.S. @@thatsTylerDurden I currently have one at 120,000 and its been in the shop so many times in the last two years
Why no frontier?
I have had my Colorado almost a year and never needed my headlight switch.
@@Tiovergudo And Fords.
@@robhtwo There's so much functionality controlled by the touchscreen in any of these trucks, if it fails you are going to have to get it fixed. It's not like the light controls on the Colorado screen are going to fail all by themselves.

😂😂 Same
Me too😂
Me three
none of these have a V6, the Frontier outshines all of these, the larger displacement has less wear over time compared to a 4 cylinder running at a higher RPM to get the same power, that's why the previous Toyota engines in V6 and V8 last so long, they run at lower rpms, this new 4 banger in all these models shown will not have the longevity compared to a NA engine, also Dont forgot to factor in the cost of a turbo replacement can be 3-4K$ so what ever fuel savings you make, keep it handy
GREAT REVIEW!!! Felt like you were really honest and unbiased in your review of these trucks! Really helped me make up my mind. Keep up the good work and yes you were funny too.
No Ridgeline or Frontier in the comparison?
Last year I was ready to get a Tacoma but went to Chevy dealership next door I wanted to checkout the nice looking red stripe on black Colorado displayed at the front of dealer. I bought the Colorado. Love it! No regrets.
"I own a 2008 Tacoma TRD Sport package with 220k miles, and it has never given me any issues. I was waiting to upgrade to the new 2024 Tacoma, but the disappearance of the 4-cylinder turbo engine option has disappointed me, so l've decided to go with a Ford Ranger instead."
????? I thought the Taco came with only 4 cal turbo???
Should have included the frontier!
Nissan frontier has a simple more reliable engine than these three. No one asked for everything to be turbo charged.
Speak like someone that has never worked on a turbo car before it really isn’t anymore difficult than an na car
We asked for more torque and that is what the turbo delivers.

5,500 on the raptor actually

Long term reliability and resale will prove the value of the Tacoma
I just bought a Colorado and, I’ve driven it all week. It’s really nice and the gas mileage is better than what I expected
Love my 2019 Frontier.
