The biggest problem about monster high being a live action movie is that painted colorful skin just never looks good. It just looks goofy. And i'm not sure that making it "camp" is gonna help how tacky it's gonna be
They'll look good if the film gets a big practical effects and makeup budget. It probably won't, though.
@@lunadragon7358 I'm really not sure if budget can help painted skin and tacky outfits like the iconic monster high ones. I love the franchise but I just don't think it translates well at all to live action. It's supposed to be total fantasy, that's why animation works so well. It's similar to Bratz and their live action movie. In that case it was supposed to be easier right? I mean there's nothing fantastical to adapt or crazy outfits to recreate, and yet it just falls short because real people just don't have the characteristic Bratz doll faces, huge eyes, lips and feet lol. And yet I still feel it would be more reasonable for there to be a better high budget Bratz movie than a monster high one. It's just a lot easier

I love the idea of turning the monster high into a live action film. But my biased opinion is. I feel like monster. High fans need to accept a little bit of gore. And drama. With a bunch of fashion. I wanna see a monster teen movie like teen wolf and American horror stories or mean girls The directors. It needs to know when to be camp. And has to know when to be scary. At least have a conversation about it. The gory details of a monster life. I'm a fan of dark humor and monster high is. A golden ticket for modern. Dark Esthetic and humor.
Omg yes! I’m a huge horror nerd and I would absolutely lose my mind if they made the vibes/set more spooky, or made references to more horror movies. Especially considering it’s Universal, it’d be such a huge waste not to reference the classic Universal Monsters 💕
The entertainment industry should just focus on either being amusing or artistic, projects which have a universal appeal, stunning visuals, clever symbolism/themes and competent scrips instead of pretentious and polarizing surface level performative activism forced down everyone’s throat yet at the same time appealing to literally no one on any belief system, a lot of campy movies of the past are still analyzed today.
They should either commit to making real commentary (on a level AT LEAST somewhat comparable to anyone online who does competent commentary) or stay in their entertainment lane and put on a show
But Monster High is an activist doll franchise with a 2000s vibe, all the characters have this charge of diversity or, I don't know, militancy about acceptance, like Clawdeen being a lesbian but Garret Sander not being able to express this due to the franchise's image intention!
@@brendomiqueias2480 While there is canon gay characters in G1 MH (Valentine and Kiyomi to name a few) Clawdeen isn't part of them. He just said that he liked and supported the headcanon, while admitting it wasn't really the initial intention (they just wanted a main character that wasn't boy crazy).
@@lyraenza Not to be rude, but did he say yes or no about clawdeen's sexuality? because it makes more sense for her to be a lesbian than straight, we see that in the movie ghouls rule! But, whatever, that doesn't change what I said about MH's activism, most of the characters, with intention or not, elucidate human peculiarities like Frank having heterochromia and "piebaldism" toralei having spots that allude to vitiligo or another rare syndrome, etc.!

I think the last two suffered a lot from a lower budget, I don’t think anyone should be tackling something as detailed and hard to make as mh on a tight budget
As a part of the MH fandom, I am very much concerned about how this movie is going to turn out. Considering the work of both directors appointed to lead this movie production, I do not udnerstand what can they do that will end up feeling and looking like a Monster High movie...
When it comes to Akiva's work on the Batman Movies, it was only in the sphere of scriptwriting (according to my short Google research; I may be wrong, but this is what information I am working with at the moment), so that makes me unsure about wether or not the film will end up campy or not. He has written some rather questionable stories (based on what I have heard from people who a more familiar with the movies he has worked on).
I have nothing to say about the other director, cause their work is all over the place...
In addition My brian does not understand what kind of story one can write for an MH-themed movie intended to be shown at cinemas in any scenario. MH, as a brand, does not have that big of a legacy, so we cannot expect something like the Barbie movie in terms of self-aware plot. The only option is to make a movie tthat has an original story or some sort of retelling, but again, I am not sure they can actually do any of that well :/
Lastly, if the directors are not the ones to make this movie bad, then it is Mattel who can do it. They also do not seem to understand what the older fans want, beause a lot of new media content and merch related to the original generation of Monster High seems so out of touch with what the fans want to see...
Anyway, I am very much coutious about this. All of the work on this movie can go down the drain so easily and for so many reasons...
So far we don’t have any creatives hired, the two people we know (like akiva) are producers, so I think akiva is not gonna be writing it (and yeah, you’re right, he’s writing has been a bit questionable) so… we’ll have a better idea when we know who’s gonna direct/write

You are so real about the fact that the movie needs to be quotable, funny and have great costuming/ set design and music
What we truly need from this movie should be gothic, punk rock, steampunk kinda aesthetics and some maximalist over the top sets. Would love to see more practical effects being use especially for the characters like CGI is great and all but it can look tacky

i completely agree with you on Barbie movie!! i had such high hopes for it and everything looked beautiful...but i found it severely lacking in plot, character development, humor and any type of social commentary. it really did feel like an unfunny white feminism thing and i was shooked when i saw that even this extremely surface level feminism was controversial for so many people!
and a lot of people like it so much i felt like there was smth wrong with me istg. my favourite character was Ken not because wooow its all about men again, but bc Ryan's charisma made him the only compelling and funny character in the whole movie...
Yeah you gotta know what you’re making. If corporate is going to stifle real analysis/reflection/commentary - don’t do it and try to sneak it in through comedy but mostly focus on making it work as entertainment then

I actually really loved the barbie movie! But I have always seen it through the lens of the movie being about the discussion of ideas vs reality in like a plato way rather than through the lens of it just being about feminism.
I pray that they don’t try to make it dark and edgy like Wednesday or Winx the saga. Monster high is such a campy and ridiculous concept where if you try to make it serious I worry it would just be corny.

If they're going to do a Monster High movie on the "Barbie Scale" they better scraped the whole Draculaura is a witch storyline, it's nonsense and bonkers. Like WHY was that even introduced after a decade?! Let the girl be a vampire and stop complicating things, that's the whole reason things like this fail. Instead give us good wardrobe and character background, even if the main plot isn't the best, give me iconicness everywhere else. Or if they're willing, a good adventure storyline based on the OG series NOT the new one. #JusticeforEverAfterHigh would be ICONIC, always ignored but never forgotten 😔

I get that it was always meant to be campy (which i love) but half of the characters are undead, several have tragic backstories (apparently), and none of that is brought up in any of the movies/shows
I don't expect them to perfectly juggle spooky and silly, but I'd be so happy if they at least tried to.
Edit: Using examples, the vibe I'm looking for would be something between Stranger Things and the spookier Scooby-Doo media (Zombie Island, the Second Live Action film, and Mystery Incorporated)

i agree with the main point in this video that they require a big budget to even think about pulling this off but i feel like this analysis is stuck with the opinion that this should be g1, 2010's etc... whereas its been said that its not going to be g1 or g2 or g3, most likely will be another version of mh in the multiverse.
You hit the nail on the head with the Barbie movie! Most of the “woke” movies are only considered woke because they’re performative, and performative movies usually don’t have good writing. They’re just looking to push a message (and not even doing it well). Movies with good representation, messaging AND writing would receive much less scrutiny than something that’s being praised for doing the bare minimum. For example, both Harley Quinn and The Marvels had a female ensemble and had feminist themes. Harley Quinn managed to have good writing and comedy tho, which is why (to my knowledge) it got much less criticism.
I can't really imagine a good MH live-action film. While EAH had a storyline, the appeal for MH was the concept, and I can't imagine too many of their animated films making for good theatrical films.

i'm gonna be really honest, i didn't mind the previous 2 movies from Paramount. were they perfect? of course not. but they were still fun and the songs were actually really good. that being said i have higher hopes for this new live action and i have a feeling it will be based on G1. i do like G3 for many reasons but G1 is still the original and the reason why so many of us fell in love with the brand
Lisa, you hit the nail on the head with your Barbie movie commentary. I was personally so to watch the movie after all the hype and marketing …. and it was fine. I remember talking with my dad after about how it felt like a first draft of a really good film. (In that there were many small good ideas in the movie but it never really committed to them - for example, my favorite chemistry pair was Barbie and Gloria but the movie didn’t delve deeper into the fascinating dynamic between the two as characters but also as a person and the doll she bonded with/projects onto.)
Like you said, the comedic beats were few and far between and mostly didn’t hit.
I didn’t go into the movie expecting anything beyond a ‘liberal’ political position but I was still kinda amazed at how performative and white-feminismy it felt (to me, ofc)
Sidebar (bc this comment isn’t long or opinionated enough haha), they could have blended the different tones between ‘goofy barbie land’ and reckoning with one’s legacy/humanity by having the actress who played Ruth Handler, barbie’s creator, narrate the movie (if narration was even needed to tell the story haha)

What really worries me is how the movie might choose to portray Frankie as a non-binary character/person. Hollywood does NOT have a good track record with portraying trans and gender non-conforming people, and I don’t have my hopes set very high for this one. Not to mention the fact that Frankie is also disabled, so who even knows how well they’re going to do portraying that!
Because they're giving Monster High the Barbie movie treatment I'm pretty sure the movie will be a hit and won't be terrible because the Barbie movie was a great movie and had a great Focus some pressure the Monster High movie is going to be just as good if not better because like if they're giving me the Bar Louie treatment that's going to work because the Barbie movie tackles topics like sexism misogyny envelope about how the patriarchy sucks and is terrible and what is the main theme with Monster High self-acceptance of not being perfect and having flaws so I feel like we are going to get a good Monster High movie hopefully because we deserve it because the movie we did get was terrible I mean it wasn't the worst like there isn't nothing that nobody can like about it but like the problem is that the Monster High Nickelodeon movies are just kind of bland the budget is low and freaky isn't the main character which is fine but like I don't know it just feel bad that Frankie is in the main character in G3 cuz like she's such a lovable character but she's kind of perfectly fits in the whole entire main character role because of her lovable personality her reliability and her being a good character for people who don't know things cuz like if she didn't know something so will the audience not know it and so instead of us needing annoying Expedition that just kind of drags on in the story we get good Expedition because Frankie doesn't know a lot that's it bye

Can you check out Mia and Me series and do a deep dive. There is 4 seasons (s4 in italian but there is some eng dubbed eps) plus a movie. Show goes worse every season. The plot is Mia finds a bracelet in live action world and with it goes to a 3d world called Centopia and she fights vilians with Yuko and Mo. Animation goes worse every season too.
when i saw the show wednesday i was like THIS is what i imagine a monster high movie to look like…like a huge school, they’re filming on location somewhere, not on a cheap set…i mean monster high should be colorful and camp as well as dark, like the setting should be dark and the girlies pop because they’re bright and dramatic n stuff…but it should be kind of a dark comedy/drama coz that’s the vibe of the original little web episodes i watched as a kid, like i know there were movies but I didn’t watch them til i was older…it’s a similar vibe tho, it’s like shenanigans these girls get up to and that should be the movie, just add in a bit of a mystery or something for the plot

i usually agree with lisa but this time i'm a bit worried about suggestions like "make it quotable" or "make the songs viral on tiktok". those things are complementary. what this movie really needs is a really good basic premise that leans into the supernatural aspects of this franchise. it also needs BUDGET because when it comes to fantasy school settings, they tend to lean more into the high school drama because they can't afford fantasy or action sequences. the adams family's or scooby-doo live action movies are the most obvious examples but i think another good basic inspiration could be scott pilgrim vs. the world, which isn't perfect, but has every single thing lisa and i want in this movie

girl i COMPLETELY agree with your barbie commentary so much!! i was so very excited for it because everyone said they laughed their asses off and cried their eyes out but like it was very much feminism that we learned in middle school? like americas speech was very surface lvl etc. idk im very happy that it made other people really happy but i was expecting more maybe i was dumb to expect more from mattel (also the commentary on mattels boardroom being made up of entirely guys doesnt rlly work when its them doing the commentary and its still true i feel) sorry im rambling but my favourite part was also the set design it was sick.
I agree so much with your takes!! Honestly, I’d love for this iteration of Monster High to be reminiscent of 2000s teen movies but more camp, kind of like Do Revenge. It could even be set in the 2010s to be more referential of the original material. If they do meta-commentary, I hope it’s about not forcing yourself to stick to one label. It’s pretty vague, but it could apply to a lot of conflict driven situations and not be a surface level + preachy/performative combo.
I’d love for them to also have some references to queer culture. I wouldn’t expect an outright queer character (though reboot Frankie does set a precedent), but they could incorporate queer themes through music, character styling, references to queer fashion, drag like make up (could totally be fit into a party scene OR be the norm for the ghouls). I would LOVE an original Chappell Roan song for this movie.
Also, make it spooky. They’re monsters… Please.
As for styling, I actually really loved the video made by Moderngurlz. It doesn’t have to be that exactly. But I really hope the team behind styling do their research on the character’s personalities, their different canon iterations, and fan-made iterations.
But most of all- I hope they think of the fans. Make it fun. Make it iconic. It doesn’t have to follow the canon, but go online- look at Tumblr blogs, watch youtube videos, read fanfiction if you have to. See what your audience likes and WANTS, because they’re the ones who’re going to pay for those movie tickets. I hope they’re careful and very intentional with how they market it. Doesn’t have to be Barbie level, but identify and hook your intended audience. Let it be known who it’s for.

I love collecting Hot Wheels and have... Hundreds. However, I can't fathom how you would make a good movie about them. Maybe a documentary would be interesting to the right audience, but a fiction film (especially if they want a Barbie like film) would be hard to pull off I think
they can steal the "cars" movie approach but it would be too close in concept just based on the characters being cars ahah
