i think the reason these dolls look more human than monster is because lily martinez said she initially didn’t want to work on a line with monsters. she said she does cutesy designs but was convinced to make concept art and prototypes because they specifically wanted her to add her cutesy touch to the concept of monster dolls. so they probably don’t look very monstrous cause that just wasn’t her thing
I love the Lily Martinez ones, the sketches and the sculpts for those dolls are so cute. The Frankie prototype makes me think of an almost Ever High style character, idk she just kind of gives me like modern day fairy tale vibes
I have a theory that the ghouls were supposed to be able to shapeshift and that they could shapeshift to a human to blend into the human world and that's why these prototypes looked so human.
from my understanding before they figured out how the line would look mattel had multiple designers make monster high prototypes and tested them with kids. we’ve only seen garrets original prototypes which he used to pitch the dolls (so his likely are the first MH prototypes) and now lilys. she said that during testing kids loved her dolls and chose them again and again. she designed the iconic main 5 ghouls heads and body. so i guess through testing her sculpt design won kids over and garrets frankie and drac outfit won kids over. it make me super curious to see other monster high prototypes made by designers at mattel that have yet to see the light of day. i bet someone has a prototype design of clawdeen that is closer to what we got than the other prototypes we know of atm. also want to add that lily martinez designed the og lagoona blue from head to toe!!! forever thankful for her contribution to monster high it would not be the same without her work.
My theory for why clawdeen looks so humans is perhaps cause they maybe did want to give her two forms like an actual werewolf-I doubt she would have looked like a full on wolf like g2 but most likely reference how the wolf man looked(since his her universal monster inspiration) And for why clawdeen’s outfit keepet looking so different-I got a feeling they at first went with a purly y2k style before they decided to mix in punk too, which honestly helped a lot she ended up better fitting in with Frankie and draculaura
There will always be concept art before the doll. The timeline probably worked like this. There were multitudes of rough concept sketches, the tied down one which might be the ones seen there but they could also be the promotional art. Just note that the art is never designed off the doll. The promotional and final pass art is usually designed off of previous concept art. The art probably got to the stage where they could start testing it with textiles, but they found issue with it scrapped it and when back to concepting new designs. I hope we get to see some more of the many design iterations they had. Though who knows if it was all even kept.
I like the prototypes but not so much the whitewashed Clawdeen. Also will all do respect to the designer they just don’t look like monsters to me and more like goth girls. Very interesting designs though, just doesn’t seem very monster high to me.
I think these newer photos came before the older photos - the artwork is stamped 2010, so if these newer ones came after, I doubt they would made artwork of old prototypes, especially as frankie is green in the artwork, it’s possible they scrapped the lily ones and carried on with the my scene ones and we landed on what we got
I find prototypes completely fascinating though I am happy they morphed into what they originally did I don’t think they’d stayed around for as long way they were, the formula they ended with was the magic formula but it wouldn’t be a horrible idea if Mattel made the prototypes for collectors one day or something. Idk why Mattel doesn’t make a little documentary for this the MH fandom is still big and alive enough to just let all the designers tell their truths and show a history of ALL pro types ideas were scrapped and why from G1-G3/alumni
Lily said in a TikTok (Idk if it was that TikTok or a later one) that they idea from the start were "daughters if famous monsters" and that her designs were the first. So they must have tried out the My Scene-ish style 2nd and then went back to looking more like the original prototypes.

I feel like I'm the only person who actually dislikes these prototypes. all I see is people gushing over how beautiful they are but I don't see it and I feel kinda bad, not to discredit Lilly or the sculptors work they're just... forgettable to me. although I am looking at them with knowledge of how monster high panned out, so hindsight is 20/20. I don't think kid me wouldn't have looked twice at these on the shelves, they kinda just look like 5% edgier moxie girl knockoffs with slightly different proportions

Not gonna lie, I PREFER what we got instead of what we could have had. There's not enough monster elements in these prototypes for me.
Also the the myscene ones are excellent, they just had to monster them up a bit
