Am I alone with preferring telephoto to ultrawide? Full review coming soon.
I definitely prefer telephoto over ultrawide but having both would be the best solution.. iPhone 11 pro 😆
Telephoto is more useful. Ultra wide is a nice to have though.
Telephoto is honestly just great for when you want to take portraits of someone or something or you just want a close-up and you don't have your camera
What's your reasoning?
Right there with you, Jon! Ultra-wide is fun, but telephoto is more useful in my opinion.
What’s the point on putting a 90hz display to run on a 2800 mAh battery
It's adaptive, so realistically you'll be using 60hz most of the time saving battery and 90hz when it's ideal and you can notice a difference between 60hz and 90hz. But still a bigger battery would have been bigger unless the hardware is now also using less juice than the pixel 3 hardware.
@@TheBattery124 that shouldn't matter. The pixel 3 has a bigger battery and now the pixel 4 has a smaller one. Like wtf? How is that an upgrade??
@@goosty17 just buy the xl bro 😂
@@TheBattery124 but wouldn't tracking to make sure you're looking at the phone also use up battery?

Haha. I'm still using the Nexus 6P. Lol
Nexus 5X user here 😅
I got the pixel 3 a year ago. Way more modern and relevant compared the the og pixel. But that pixel 1 was certainly ahead of its time and still a great
Galaxy S5 here :)
I'm three years in with my Pixel 1 and it's now starting to give me problems. WiFi and Bluetooth not working as well.
The phone on the chair's arm is giving me anxiety.
Yep with those falaeling arms
Yeah me too..
Haha yeah I guess when they're sent to you it's a little less nerve wracking I am sure 😂😂 I wish I didnt have to have a case on my phone because they look so much nicer but I'm too scared since i dont want to have to pay $200 to Verizon for it to be replaced lol
For real. A pixel 4 will crack if you breathe on it, a fall from that height is guaranteed to shatter the screen.
Ikr
I love the black rim around the white phone. Just bummed it doesn’t feel like much of an upgrade
They sadly went the Apple route this time :(
90hz, double camera, new design, better night sight. only thing that isn't an upgrade is battery imo
The phone that got the biggest upgrade this year, was the Note line. Apple and Google fell flat on their face this year. But, people will still buy them. I will probably be one of them since I want a bigger phone and I have a Pixel 3 and iPhone X at the moment. Ugh.
@Enderman So then get the black Pixel 4 or 4XL. No black rim, problem solved. 😁
@@Mcali1984 WTH are you even talking about with the Note 10 ?? That's arguably the biggest disappointment of all, esp the smaller one. It's a *downgrade* in _so_ many ways from the Note 9 !!
This is hands down the best video on the Pixel 4. Jon didn’t complain about the lack of wide angle lense or just hate on the thing because that’s what seems cool among tech UA-camrs. He celebrated the pixel line, praised some changes and didn’t act like this is a failure of a device. Keep up these videos because they are a blessing among the toxic phone hating that lives on UA-cam.
🙏 Chris. Trying to spread positivity.
The ones hating it the most are the ones who haven't even used it, just because the specs on paper.
Jon bashed the Pixel 2 and 3 though.
@@jon4lakers Jon bashed the Pixel 2 and 3 though.
But Jon is one of those toxic phone haters...he uses negativity and click baits...
It's like Google's goal with any Pixel phone is to always have something to disappoint users. It's not that hard nowadays to give a good all-rounder phone, I seriously don't get it.
If that is their goal, they are nailing it. I was really hoping this year would be amazing since the HTC team whom built some of the best Android phones were building the pixel 4. Alas, I cannot help but feel that Google is asking for too much money.
@@passionatetechnology8306 they're asking for less than what Samsung and Apple are asking for their phones
Yep, they start by saying lets make a really great phone, then they do it. Next, they say ok how can we upset people when we reveal the phone. HA
@@SpektrikMusic Yeah true, but the phone is ugly, old looking, and missing several features so I mean... still overpriced
@@slaiff. it's not even missing that much and on top of that it has 90hz screen and soli so it evens out. Definately not ugly have you seen the back of the iPhone 11 Pro?
I bought into the Pixel line at the 2 and haven't updated yet just because the other Pixels haven't really been enough to justify the upgrade.
Same, when the pixel 2 came out it really had everything you needed, this Pixel 4 should have free Google Storage and Ultra Wide Camera and I'd buy it in a heartbeat, however we don't get any of that AND we lose fingerprint and front firing speakers? It's tough
tbh thats a good thing, google makes there phones to last which is what most phone makers should be doing.
Same I'm typing this on my pixel 2 and honestly the price and performance was what kept me from buying something else. I'm kinda disappointed that the pixel 4 doesn't have a 650$ price point and honestly I would prefer the wide angle over the telephoto. You can replace the telephoto but not the wide angle.
Consider the 3A. I hear great things about it and you really wouldn't be missing much from the 2 (Processor and Visual Core aside).
@@OddOneOut665 I have the 3a a few months ago and its definitely worth it at that price. I might be getting an iPhone next if google keeps this up tho
For me, one of the biggest and most enticing things about buying a Pixel was getting unlimited cloud storage. - And they took that away.
I too perfer telephoto than ultra wide but I do think that the pixel should have just included both
Agreed. Ultrawide isn't everything. Specially when the quality is objectively worse.
Exactly, every other flagship now has 3 cameras
The telephoto vs ultrawide debate is irrelevant, the real question should be why didn't Google just include both like every other flagship? There's no reason they couldn't
@@jm1835 very very very good point.
Huawei p30 pro has both, but in a new level
Pixel 5: No USB Port
Pixel 6: No microphone
Pixel 7: No battery
Pixel 8: no pixels
@@star_darkie8600 Pixel 9,, what are you expecting remember Apple & Microsoft 🤣
Pixel 9: doesn’t exist (-cough cough- APPLE -cough cough- MICROSOFT)
You're confused you're think of Apple.
Woe such an original joke
I dont get why all these reviewers are continually harping on the whole Google didnt need 2 lenses before BS. Google used that argument at a time where phones used their second lenses for "depth tracking" for their portrait modes, the Pixel 4 literally just has a second lens with the same beautiful and powerful camera
Ya it actually is really annoying, at the time Google did not need a second lense, that is not debatable. THey had the best camera. period. Now a whole year later they decided a second camera is useful so they added it. Can't blame them for making the correct decision at the time, jsut because it isn't correct for today.
@@ntb3884 a lot of people really discount the value google brings with their software.
@@ntb3884 Nope they did not. They had good software camera hardware was not that great. And their video was rubbish and still has not improved that much from what I have seen. So best camera period. I think not.
@@EDITS_SC no phone had 'the best camera'. They all have strengths and weaknesses like Google's portrait mode is better but Apple's video is better.
@@porogami7yearsagoedited754 I personally and this is my opinion do not think the Pixel portrait mode is better maybe equal to but not better
Something that I noticed is hard for digital cameras to capture is fireworks. It would be fun to see a camera comparison on how well they do it a really difficult test scenario
That's an amazing idea... :O
@andrew nelson Ask and you shall receive .... ua-cam.com/video/DpNm-vrraIQ/v-deo.html
Front facing speaker was amazing... I will hold on my P3 for that reason, however that 90 refresh rate and orange looks nice... Please compare the speakers between 3 and 4 for media consumption
I have a 2xl and I was having this same thoughts during the 4 launch presentation. John as always your voice of reason confirmed my suspicion. Thanks for the quality content, as always.
So looking forward to see this comparison video of the 3 and 4:) thank you!
I really like your background music everytime i watch your videos!!! It mesh well with your voice.
My theory is...phone manufacturers do not include everything in their phone lines...why?
So you buy another and another to get close but not complete perfection..
So year after year we seem the new and shine latest model, with slight improvements.
I honestly think the pixel 3 is the most beautiful phone I've ever used. Especially that back.
Totally agree! I have a black one as well. The combination of Matt glass and glossy glass.
Hey Jon i thought this way too. Like I still have my 2XL which seems to have that nexus 5 type legacy feel...I didn't think the 3 was enough of a step up to leave the 2xl..and you echo this for the 3 to the 4 my question is should I go from the 2xl to the 4 or get a 3 and for for Pixel 5 rumors to come out on thanks giving
I just love how more and more UA-camrs are changing the aspect ratio
And I just hate it ...
I am genuinely curious what you mean. I just started looking for a new phone a few days ago so I'm out of the loop as to what they are doing or not doing.
@@wc351 so bigger phones have a different ratio
I'm using the note 10 plus so it has a ratio of 18:9
iPhones like the standard one and the plus have a 16:9
Jon's videos are really really good. Top notch production quality, the little things matter. 🔥
That was such a bang on comparison review, I am your fan now. Thanks
And then you've got the Pixel 3a (and XL). The new Pixel 4 just doesn't do it for me. The biggest thing for me was no ultra wide. I love that on my V30 (which is my current phone) and I honestly don't think I could have a phone without that.
If Asus had made the ROG Phone 2 water resistant that would have been my go to for an upgrade. Now I'll just wait and see if LG gives us a new V-series phone this year.
I've had my v30 for 2 years and just ordered a pixel 4xl. The battery life is the thing that I'm most concerned with in addition to not having a fingerprint scanner for some apps 😬
Going to miss the hidac but looking forward to the pixel camera and seeing if it's much better than the v30.
The front facing camera on the v30 has to be my least favourite feature.
Anthony Cheeseman the battery life on the 4 and 4xl probably won’t be great. The sonar and 90hz display is a huge killer
@@Chedda1701 the front facing camera is almost offensively bad. The V30s camera is so great but it's draw back is that it really shines when your in manual mode which I don't mind since I'm usually setting up shots. Also audio recording is honestly still better than anything out there. I've never seen a phone that can record a loud concert with such clarity as this thing can.
It's really the niche things about the V30 that's kept me attached to it. If it's cameras we're just a bit better it genuinely would be my perfect phone.
@@Kingjay814 Kingjay814 I'm in the same boat as you. Rockin my V30 planned on copping the pixel 4. But they said no more unlimited storage made me rethink. Then found this: ua-cam.com/video/vZ7x_aRXBGM/v-deo.html. which I'm surprised that a lot of popular tech reviews don't even have a video of this phone.
@@mattaye699 what the heck!? It does exist? I swear LG is a company I love but their marketing team is so wildly inept. How on earth is it that I find out about their special fridge that makes ice balls before their flagship phone
I still love my Pixel 3, and will continue to use it for at least another year. The 4 is a pass for me, and I hope the 5 will be better.
Agree with you!
I also have pixel 3... And see no reason to buy pixel 4
It's supposed to be a huuuge upgrade idk if I'll be able to hold off on then 4a though.
5 is better
Bruh the unlimited space realy makes me go mad on pixel 4
Same here but $2 a month for 100 gb, while it's not great coming from FREE storage, I think most people can do but I'm still a bit disappointed at the pixel 4
Pixel 3 is way better than 4
@@jamalcollier5339 The P3 hardware had a lot of problems. Speaker phones failing, charging USB-C ports failing, etc. I went through 2 of them in a year.
Still have High Quality unlimited....
One thing to consider too is that a lot of the software updates are coming to the Pixel 3/3a. That’s one area where Apple handcuffed us with the camera updates, specifically night mode. In other words, brilliant sales strategy by Apple.
Your playlist though🥵🔥
Great upload, thanks for sharing

Starting to like your videos more and more. Great cinematic quality 👍
The last Google phone I bought was the then premium Nexus 5 for $330 when it came out (Still works fine today) so when Google keeps bringing out phones with less features which are more than double the cost, one has to question if they are making the right choice, especially when competitors offer a whole lot more often for much less.
Loving the black color on the Pixel 4.
we just entered an era that phones are not getting involved, but the camera.

I'm filling the 3, simply on speakers alone‼️🔊
Dang! I never knew I'd be bothered by top bezel but after using s10, pixel 4 already feels too old.
I really loved the front facing wide angle camera from the pixel 3 xl!! I used it a lot for group selfies but now it seems i can't be doing this any longer with the pixel 4
I tested out the speakers from Pixel 2 and Pixel 4. With Pixel 4, you don't have dual, front facing speakers anymore, but the stereo/surround effect seemed to be more prominent and better. Maybe we don't need front facing speakers.

Jon, forget the Pixel 4. I want to know what watch you are rocking in this video. Very sleek.
Watching this on My Pixel 3 almost crying ❤️
I love how icons were left without the addition of character fonts..how much memory does that save us between a full 24h X365..?
Thanks Jon Rettinger for that awesome comparison! I was thinking about upgrading from 3XL to 4XL, but after you comparison I´ll definitely gonna stick with the still top 3XL! I´ll gonna wait until the Pixel 5...
The removal of the front facing speakers is a deal breaker for me.
It kills me when companies remove MAINSTAYS of a series of phones. LG did it when they made the V30 without an IR blaster and a removable battery. It destroyed the identity of the "V" line of phones.
If Google keeps removing things that make a Pixel a Pixel, they'll basically be making generic black rectangles for the rest of their run.
Why is front facing speakers important? Just need to wear a Bluetooth headphone.
@@auslei umm no they are important because people don't want to wear earbuds every single time they watch a short video especially if they want to share that video with people nearby
It sounds just as good

Damn Jon. One epic video after another 👏
I love the video. I currently have the Pixel 3 and all of the reviews haven't given me a clear reason to upgrade. I think I would like the 90hz display, but otherwise nothing wows me on the Pixel 4. Great analysis though!
Love my 3. I'm sure it'll be nice, but nothing about the 4 has me jealous.
That battery size goes against all logic!
Loved it !!! . Think you are tired if me saying this but you vidoes are amazing from start to end.
Definitely a solid video Jon!
I really want to like the 4 but I just can't. It's too expensive for what you get I feel, and I can't live with 128gb of storage and a small battery.
I have been wanting to switch to a pixel phone but I cannot justify the price and the specs. I was really hyped for the pixel 4 considering I am still using a galaxy s7 but when looking at the specs, the pixel 3 has a larger battery than the pixel 4 and the galaxy s7 has a larger battery than both. I charge my phone to 100% before going to work and my phone dies before I get home. The pixel 4 has an even smaller battery so that will definitely not last a whole day.
@@jasonjung312 to be fair, your S7's battery probably doesn't last as long as it did when it was new, but if you want a battery champ, the iPhone pros are the way to go.
I had the 2xl for about 2 years, skipped the 3 because it was meh at best and waited for the 4 which also turned out to be meh lmao I went with the iphone 11 pro the camera is amazing. Hopefully ill make my way back to android again lol
If you're interested in the pixel 4 just wait mid year and you'll see the price drop and be more in line with its value. I pre-ordered the pixel 3 xl, wish I waited a few more months before buying....Great phone btw
What are you doing on your phone that you need more than 128gb?!?!?! I have 32 on my current phone and I run out of storage like bi-weekly...it’s quite annoying but I get by just fine!! (Its an iPhone 6 if you were wondering)
I don't think pixel phones are meant to be disposable, annual upgrades. I didn't get pixel 3... But I'm getting the 4.
Facts... As much as Android fans dislike Apple, Google is following the blueprint. The updates, the focus on the camera, the "S" iterations, even the ecosystem. Google is quietly making Android OS tailored specifically for it's hardware, I'm hooked though. Google Assistant is the only assistant worth while and when I think it couldn't get much better they make leaps and bounds with the Assistant.
Definitely not. At the very least, 2 years if you're a heavy user like me, or probably 3-4 years if you're a light user. I'm upgrading to the 4xl when it releases but seriously, my 2XL has a huge amount of life left in it, it's insane. Whereas my Nexus 6P would die at 60% come 2 years on. My Pixel 2XL went from reaching like 20% by the end of the day to now, almost dead after my longest day as a Student once I come home. That's like, taking it off charge at 6:30 am, it dies by 8pm, which for a 2 year old phone with no performance issues is incredible.
I mean I like it though so I'm gonna get it and wait for the software updates on it
@@Rayan_Iolanthe Still have my Pixel 2XL from work and besides some battery draining issues that pop up, but after a day or two clears up, the phone still performs really great. THE best phone I ever owned and still use daily.

Well done Jon! Fav UA-camr 👍🏽
Great video! I'll be skipping the update after it!
I love the design, the lack of the notch, that high contrast flat white with the black and matte finish.. 90hz display. However they dropped the ball hard by going with telefoto over ultra wide and eliminating the unlimited storage for Google photos. Google phones.. Forever two steps forward and 3 steps back. Also should have just stuck with their rear mounted fingerprint sensor.
Love the video and the pixel 4 wallpaper, can you provide me a link Jon??

Appreciate the candid review, Jon. Same feelings. Pixel 2 owner, feeling dismayed at the thought of considering buying last year's phone (I really want wireless charging).
Just don't see how the Pixel 4 is the better value, even at $1-200 less on black Friday.
Next year's Pixel would come with a wide-angle. yes I said it
And?
Kiel 4G it will most likely substitute it, but not both, as it should.
It's not coming in INDIA, missing 1/7% of sales , 1/7th of population....
Having 1/7 of the world's population doesn't automatically mean you have 1/7 of the potential sales.
The average purchasing power of an Indian consumer is far less than someone from the US or Europe.
@@LaurenceLDN Yes you are correct 🙂👍, i just ment to say that , from 1.3B , even if 50k units gets sold , still it's profitable, then to not at all sell ....
Thank you Jon for the in-depth differences between Pixel 3 and 4. I have been debating which to get and I think Pixel 3 is the winner with the slightly more powerful battery and dual front facing speakers and still ingenious camera 😄 Pixel 3 internal storage is more than enough for me. Most my important pics and docs are saved to cloud, printed or saved on my pixelbook anyways. The Pixel 3 processor is more than enough fast for me for daily use and watching UA-cam videos; I don't play games or watch movies on my phone. The Pixel 4 gesture controls are not very accurate based on other reviews and I rather touch the screen instead of getting frustrated and possibly throwing the phone against the wall lol! (J/K) 😉I have a twin so I do not want her face mistaken for mine on face unlock 😅 Not that I have anything to hide. Apparently in facial recognition settings it states people that look similar to you may be mistaken for you with Pixel 4 facial recognition software. Thanks again! ✔New sub earned! 🔔

Soli radar works when you're in always on display while playing music. You dont even have to touch your phone to skip or previous song while in always-on display while the track is displayed as well. This feature IMO makes it leaps ahead of any iPhones. I just cannot go back to a phone without Always On Display for the convenience factor
Besides the fact it only works 1/10th of the time and the Soli chip literally makes this phone impossible to be used by over 1 billion people in the world because several countries ban the frequencies for consumer use that the Soli chip uses.
@@DylanM15 it works well there are videos of people using it with 9 out of 10 registered gestures. Some people dont know how to use it

Jon - I agree with you about the camera. I own the 3XL, but only as a back up, never the less it stacks up against my Note 10 and I can highly recommend as an all round daily driver.
Damn I want the 4 XL but my 7 Pro is pretty amazing other than the camera. I had the original XL and the 2 XL . 🤔 🤨

I thoroughly enjoy my pixel 3. It runs as smooth as it did out of the box. The only issue I have is the battery life. I am constantly having to carry my charger with me, which doesn't bother me enough to switch to a different phone because it charges really fast and I have access to an outlet at work. It blows my mind that they upgraded the hardware and have all of these new features without upgrading the battery. For this reason, I am happily staying with my pixel 3.
U can increase ur battery life, by switching off all google location services in setting - location - advanced and giving off to all location service as well as turning off wifi and Bluetooth scanning.
I use Galaxy buds and have a smart watch, so I keep my Bluetooth on always. I also use wifi instead of data when I don't need to use data. The battery life isn't dreadful, but it is leaps behind the newest apple phones and Galaxy phones. Turning these modes off takes away from the intended phone experience, so it's a trade off. I've used Google, Samsung, and apple phones and the pixel is definitely on the lower end when it comes to battery.
@@freddiehernandez7638 i didnt mean to ask u to switch off ur wifi or Bluetooth, those option under location setting keep on searching for wifi or near by Bluetooth devices based on your location and give u suggestions, so it drain a bit of battery and other services just collect data based on location, they dont actually helps u out.. u can switch those off and still use all google services...

Last year, the iPhone XR with Sirui Telephoto lens my friend had took better photos than my XS Max when using the telephoto sensor. I don't expect that to be different this year, since they're secondary and tertiary sensors for a reason.
It's always better to use the best sensor. And there's some excellent glass out there for added flexibility.

Jon your videos are definitely the best edited of any of the phone folks
I am with you. I am sticking with my Pixel 3 XL and wait for the Pixel 5. What would of made me upgrade is video capturing improvement and a HUGE improvement in image quality... doesn't look like I am missing much. If you have a Pixel 2...the 4 makes sense.
How would the thought process be when comparing to a Pixel 3a?
I like the idea of retaining the headphone jack (having just bought some new soundmagic earbuds)
I will be upgrading from a Samsung S6 and though I will miss the Samsung Health part that counts steps and does heartbeat monitor, I like the sound of an upgraded camera experience.

Another fantastic video Jon, sound advice. I know that youtube videos have a world wide audience, for this reason I chuckled to myself about opting for the pixel three. I wish I could get a Pixel 3 for $300 less than the 4 but due to google's stupid pricing here in the UK, Pixel 3 is more expensive than the 4! Pixel 3 is £739 which is $960! whilst Pixel 4 is £669 which is $870.
Watching from my Pixel 2XL. It's showing it age but I have not really been annoyed enough to switch. Pictures still look amazing when compared to the newest phones.
