Perhaps the ugliest and most underpowered (not a 855+, just 6 gb and average display) flagship phone of the year. Also to mention, it's video capabilities hasn't improved I guess.

I think pixel 4 is getting way too much hate. Yeah, the 64 GB storage is bad and no headphones in the box is greedy. But people aren’t even giving it a chance with the bashing. It does have lots of positives. 1. 90Hz display, an extremely important feature. And yeah this one aspect makes it miles ahead of the 720p 60Hz lcd on the iPhone 11. 2. The radar chip has lots of interesting features, the speed of the face unlock is because of it. When you gets close it can prepare the phone and it will unlock before you even brings your phone towards your face. This is a much more advanced tech than the Face ID and is even faster than OP’s face unlock. It can also automatically lower the volume of a call when you bring your hands near it to pick it up (same goes for alarm). Simple put, it can detect your presence around it. 3. The design and built quality is considerably more better than pixel 3. 4. The excellent camera, smooth software, faster google assistant are all additional bonus. 5. The price is also not going up this time around even after so many upgrades. Personally speaking I absolutely despise google for their “we just wanna be like Apple” strategy. But honestly google in many ways, one upped Apple. Seriously, Apple get “best phone ever and this is amazing” praise for slight improvements of camera and stuffing larger batter (this also drastically increased the weight and makes it hard to use the phone for a longer span). This is a major upgrade from last year for the pixels, I appreciate it for what it is.
Don’t forget about the 2800 battery on a 90 hz display. That thing, together with the always on soli radar, and the infamous pixel battery optimisation is going to be a literal killer of the phone. Just go for the s10/s10e or the one plus with a gcam port. But, this one ain’t it, cheif. Not this time.
Br Ramesh The reason is primarily the price, pixel 4 have serious improvements (compared to pixel 3) in display (90 hz and OLED panel quality), the biometric system (and entire faceID system combined with radar chip), completely new design with superior quality materials being used, camera upgrades. They have to cut some corners to keep the price the same as last years pixel 3. Adding a higher base storage would skyrocket the price, a bigger battery is valid point and I agree. 855+ doesn’t have any major improvement compared to 855, just a slightly overclocked version, in-fact Google’s launch window is the issue here, they launch their phones at the end of a chips life cycle and right before a new one comes. For example Apple and Huawei both have their own chipsets so they don’t need to worry about this, but google use 855 on a flagship right before the 865 is coming out.
Wasir Yeah, the battery is an issue but google is saying 1 day battery life so let’s not jump the gun, it also has a 1080p panel which will save some battery as well. And the smaller phone will suffer battery issue nonetheless. The large one has 3700 mah (not amazing but still good enough).
The Recorder app alone is amazing for creatives like myself that write songs, stories, and ideas. They often start in my Voice Memo's app but this is WAY better!
Right now, I'm still rocking my Pixel 3 and Essential PH-1. Both still on Pie. Android 10 broke Call Blacklist Pro. It also broke QuickPic from sharing and ES File Explorer from backing up apps. I'm good with my Pixel 3 for *5* years.
Telephoto does make me happy. Can't remember how many times I just needed to zoom a little to get a good shot but I never will because I hate compromising on the quality of a photo. It'd be cool if you had identical twins try that face unlock. And let us know if you can add other faces. My husband and I currently have both fingerprints in each other's pixel 2 phones.
Same for me. People love the ultra wide camera, but the photos just look too soft for me. I'd rather be able to get higher quality pictures from farther away.
I'm gonna buy it aswell. I had every major brand of phones (iphone 4s, HTC one m7, S7 Edge, Pixel 1, and so on...) The bezzel isn't an issue for me. But i guess that's opinionbased. Ultrawide lens would've been good tho. Also the battery could be bigger but I'm waiting to see the reviews on that one. I think the overall features are really good. Especially that soli chip is a real innovation and will have many more usecases in the future (atleast that's what i think).
@@XnxxD I don't trust Google to expand on the gestures because from jump it like like a gimmick and many oem have did air gestures before . Yes I know it wasn't the same tech but the same idea so if media controls is all they are launching with it means they couldn't come up with a killer use for it .
@@XnxxD I agree with you, when it comes to bezzel i don't really mind it i mean when you're going to buy the phone (pixel) you already knew it was there so why complain about it.. If you bought and complain about it honestly at that point it's just nitpicking. For me the whole selling point of pixel is software, though im not saying that their hardware is bad, hardware: it's just not there YET but software💯👌 my only complain is why they didn't include ultrawide lens!? They never needed telephoto lens for portrait anyways.. I guess just to enhance.
@@gcforreal Good point, but we simply don't know if they are going to expand the gestures. But I don't that think they researched that tech for like 5(?) years just to make it a gimmick in a Phone. Could be wrong but it seems unlikely. Maybe they just try to gather real life experience with the pixel 4 to further improve it for other use cases?
@@AJ-lm9sg That's true. And tbh I rather have a bezzel at the top than a notch or something similar :D The biggest letdown for me personally is the video recording (30fps) although i don't really use video recording anyway :D Idk man i didn't use a phone with an ultrawideangle before so I can't really say I would miss it since, well I have no experiece with that :D Yeah I have to agree softwarewise I don't think any brand can match google. I just love the stock android on my pixel 1 and since the Google Assistent will be improved now i might use that more often aswell. (Google Assistant was better than siri even before the update)
5:04 Yes your right, main sensor can help in macro, telephoto helps in better portrait, wide angle does nothing but it helps to covers extra alot of subjects . Like macro, portrait as well as zoom can be provided through main sensor but you can't get wide angle feature from main camera , that's why dedicated wide angle camera is needed!!!
Finally..... Someone who understands the reasoning behind having a telephoto lens. Nice unboxing. Cant wait to get my 4 XL in 🐼. Lol. The camera looks crazy good. 👍🏻
If it was a choice between the two I think they chose correctly. They are able to expand their camera experience now. But I do agree, it would have been nice to have a third camera lens (wide angle) with it also. They have resisted for so long to add a second one. Lol. Baby steps... 🤣🤣
Things I hope you'd add in the full review: 1. Angles and full range of Face Unlock 2. Is the top bezel bigger than the P2XL? 3. Ease of night sight on astrophotography 4. Max range of zoom? 5. Improvements on video? If any 6. Camera hump rocking? 7. Google assistant accessibility from locked screen 8. Screen tests
Sure, this is in the same league as the Vivo Nex 3, One plus 7 Pro, Galaxy Note 10 and 10s of other flagships. Actually, it is the ugliest new phone of 2019
Nice one Matt... Actually I like the fingerprint reader on the back of my Pixel 3a And so I don’t see the face unlock as a big plus. I’m little disappointed with battery size being 2800 when my pixel 3A has 3000 that seems like a mistake.
@@NDSMD for example, google pixel 3 has front facing stereo speaker, unlimited google foto storage, dual front cameras with widelens. Pixel 4 has nothing of those features above.. but has some new, like the radar and better display...
@@Chrispyy__ Ok, so after unlock, all apps are open? For instance, if I have Wells Fargo, and Chase apps with fingerprint, both will be open for access using facial?
bwebmasta1 yeah that’s what happened to me when i upgraded. I had a iPhone 6s and for my bank app i used Touch ID but when i switched to a 11 pro i had to use Face ID to unlock my bank (after i entered my login information and allowed the app to use my face to unlock instead of typing in my information over and over).
I got my hands on the recorder's apk file. Don't need the phone now! Anyways they're not selling it in my country. All I need to wait for now is Google to resume its partnership with huawei.
Bingo. Until RCS is a worldwide standard implemented by every single carrier and Device OEM, android can’t even compete with sending full res photos and videos natively. That’s still a HUGE shocker to me.
Holo Scope We had Google Allo, Google Hangouts (though still up, it’s not Google’s main focus), Google Cloud Messaging, Google Talk (aka Gchat or Google Chat) & Google Duo. They’ve tried & failed many times.
@@ChrisJohannsen yeah, if there's no SDK for developpers they can't do it. But even if there is an SDK they won't do it. I've seen often enough news of such features "now having a public SDK" but still there's almost no developer implementing it 🙈 (too much effort for a small percentage of compatible phones...)
I did a sound test today with my Pixel 2XL vs the Pixel 4XL and although the new phone does not have stereo front facing speakers, I found the stereo/surround effect on it to be better and more dynamic. It did seem to have less bass though. Still sounded pretty darn good. That's the one thing I was worried about. And not being able to have 256gb of storage, but I'm at 128gb now so what could it hurt?
I'm using the pixel 4 xl as a work phone currently typing this comment on. I must say it is a FANTASTIC phone. Only complaint is that it is the most sliperary phone I've ever held. It's begging to fall off the side of your bed or coach. If you put it on a anything with a slight angle it will slip off. Case with good texture is a must.
Just subbed. Beautiful content, never heard of you until youtube recommended your video to me. I'm getting the pixel 4 xl tomorrow so I'm really pumped. Thank you for the amazing content.
Samsung tried the same idea of waving at your phone a few years back and it flopped horribly, so I honestly don’t think this feature will be successful from a smaller smartphone manufacturer. I do like that reaching for your phone on a table preps the device for an unlock, but I think this use case is happens few and far between for out and about type of people and can be reproduced by a simple raise to wake feature.
Bro if you have someone in your life that grabs your phone and unlocks it with your face while you are sleeping (and how could you not wake up to the flash of light when it unlocks) then you have other issues to deal with.... And if you're one of those that will say "what if you're dead and someone uses it to unlock and steal your data" .....omfg they can just use glue or scotch tape to keep your eyes open and unlock your shit with any other device thats uses face unlock (iphone)
Vincent Mendes even if someone is not in deep sleep little bit of screen light won’t wake u up at least not me. The joke is if u r planning to come out with a new security feature to replace fingerprint then it should be properly tested. Catching up doesn’t mean messing up. Soli radar chip my ass 😂
I fail to see how the design of this Pixel phone is so "outdated" when compared to the design of current iPhones? They almost look identical. What. makes the iPhones so 2019?...and don't tell me about the materials used...I'm talking about the design.
Let me know if the phone overheats when using video chat platforms like WhatsApp. My Pixel 2 won't let me video chat for more than 30 mins before it shuts down and has to be placed in the fridge.
Nicely produced video Matthew. Would like to see how the Voice Transcriber performs in the open environment of a lecture hall with ambient sounds and other people speaking. During the October 15 Event where was the source phone located? Was it in the open auditorium or was it located in a quiet room near a dedicated loud speaker that was feeding it the voice of the Google representative?
@@yogikkgaming Well, let's give the Pixel 4 a chance since it has just been released. And I agree that the iPhone has the best video capture in any smartphone. I have the iPhone Xs Max and taking videos is the best.
I think it's the biggest flop of the year. It should've released first but since we saw what Samsung, Apple, Huawei Oneplus did and they gave us this. I counted on them 😢
“More secure than Face ID” yet it doesnt even require attention SO you could be asleep or dead and someone can unlock your phone and go through it or even register there face lowkey 🤷♂️ but sure its super secure
Da_damm lmao its not about browser history, some of us arent 12 year olds and have our mommies and daddies to pay for everything 🤔 we have our bank accounts linked to our phones, our passwords, email accounts, paypal accounts, credit cards apple pay, nude pics of our girlfriends (doesnt apply to either of you i know) so your argument is that phones dont need to be secure, it doesnt matter? Lmao okay so your admitting you dont use a lock at all on your phone because apparently its “unnecessary” right? 😂🤷♂️ not all of us have a net worth of $12 and would like to protect out assets, identities, bank account information have fun with your trash pixel 4 phones though 🤣😇😉 im happy with my fully secured and very efficient iphone 11 pro max
You said that it’s fast than Face ID but is that because out of the box eye detection is turn off by default. So it doesn’t have to look for your eyes when raising it to unlock?
Isaac Golden he is stupid, thats fast because already unlocked before, no animation no awarnes, not like face id has awarnes and animation plus swipe up,, this is stupid no faster than face id
But it's a Samsung. Their phones are garbage. Especially the S10e. The camera is shit and the battery doesn't hold up over time. Normal for a Samsung device.
@@BytaHD on that i have to agree , i switched to a note 10 plus from a s10 in two months cuz the battery life was a disaster now my wife using the s10 shes coming from a XR she hates the s10, thinking of buying this pixel 4 as the replacement, cuz shes very much used to apple face id , but then i saw the pixel 4 battery life on specs ... 😯😔
Mathew can you give me an early sense of the 2800 mAh battery on the 4? Im trying to decide which one to preorder and the only thing holding me back from the 4 is that spec. Only of its less than 6 hours of onscreen I would opt for the XL. Appreciate it.
This is probably one of the most ugliest phones I've ever seen. The back camera module same with the iPhone is hideous and the front with the bezel on top is just.... whatever Google
@@jeantaylor9734 it's not crap by any means.... And if you think for a second Samsung design is good you're a joker. The hole punch design is shit. Note 10, is shit. iPhone is God awful with the ugly notch. Teardrop is alright but no phone has been good. Besides phones like the one plus 7 Pro with the full body display. Notches on a phone just look so dumb and have no practical use at all!! At least Google has, Soli, radar sensor, camera, front speaker, multiple facial sensors. And the software optimisation done with all these will be so good. People are just blinded by the simple design. It's got a lot of good technology to be used and the camera WILL take the crown once again. Google has the best software optimisation on the market and the pixel 4 is a great phone. It's not perfect but no phone is quite there yet.
Do you think it not having 5G is an issue? I wonder if in 6 months they'll bring out the pixel and pixel xl 5G series? It's to bad you can't swich open apps with gestures. I'd find that useful while driving. Since I have the. Pixel 3 is it worth upgrading to 4? I'm with Verizon so I can just trade it in.
I played with the Pixel 4 today and 1 thing that bothers me is the brightness , for a 2800 mah battery and I have to peak the brightness all the way up to see things clearly plus the 90hrz will destroy the battery life

And tbh I rather have a bezzel at the top than a notch or something similar :D The biggest letdown for me personally is the video recording (30fps) although i don't really use video recording anyway :D Idk man i didn't use a phone with an ultrawideangle before so I can't really say I would miss it since, well I have no experiece with that :D
Yeah I have to agree softwarewise I don't think any brand can match google.
I agree, cant wait for my 🐼 4 XL
They could have still had a super wide-angle as well as the telephoto? That was their mistake, not choosing subjectively between the two.
If it was a choice between the two I think they chose correctly. They are able to expand their camera experience now. But I do agree, it would have been nice to have a third camera lens (wide angle) with it also. They have resisted for so long to add a second one. Lol. Baby steps... 🤣🤣
@@markstelzl1245 no matter how you try to spin it not putting a wide-angle camera lens on this pixel 4 was a huge blunder

I am asking. Everyone. Apps that use the fingerprint for authentication, how will the Pixel 4 handle this with no fingerprint scanner?
bwebmasta1 with apple we use face scanner for authentication so i assume that’s what google will do

Pixel 4 “exists”, Matthew - I might be switching phones
Samsung tried the same idea of waving at your phone a few years back and it flopped horribly, so I honestly don’t think this feature will be successful from a smaller smartphone manufacturer. I do like that reaching for your phone on a table preps the device for an unlock, but I think this use case is happens few and far between for out and about type of people and can be reproduced by a simple raise to wake feature.

The face unlock on this phone is so good and advanced that it unlocks with eyes closed as well 😂😂
Bro if you have someone in your life that grabs your phone and unlocks it with your face while you are sleeping (and how could you not wake up to the flash of light when it unlocks) then you have other issues to deal with....
And if you're one of those that will say "what if you're dead and someone uses it to unlock and steal your data" .....omfg they can just use glue or scotch tape to keep your eyes open and unlock your shit with any other device thats uses face unlock (iphone)
