Actually this show was constantly attacked by groups that were overly sensitive and tried to get the network to cancel it. The difference between then and now is the networks didn’t listen to the vocal minority back then.
It's amazing back then people used to just see those people as nutcases, now they listen to them and no one has a sense of humour anymore.

I always loved how often Jefferson laughs his ass off at Al's jokes about Marcy. It's not always, but it's like 80% of the time.

That was one of my favourite shows back when. I remember, there was this woman in the U.S. who traveled all around the U.S. trying to get the show banned. It did not work. LOL
I have the complete DVD set of this show reliving my childhood what a great time for television.
I love watching younger ppl react to this, the (honestly at this point) culture shock, and trying to hold back because it's "wrong" to laugh at stuff like this.
what most people don't realize is that the writers (at least later seasons) were mostly female, "Marcy" (the chicken) actress Amanda Bearse directed several episodes (31 according to IMBD) and the 'large' women he was usually insulting loved being on the show, and many of them were in multiple episodes. Al ended up punished for all the horrible things he did and said. so all those people that complained about it being sexist and horrible, didn't really know the reality of it all. rumor has it they are making an animated version of the show, with the actors and actresses providing the voices. i'm not expecting much tho, but might have some humor to it, there was also a small bit on an episode of futurama, where leela basically turned into Peg Bundy (Katey Segal is the voice of Leela too, so made sense)
also, love the reactions, of course.
A lot of those 'large' women were comedians, and help right some of the jokes.

I just read that Married With Children is coming back as an animated show with the original 4 Bundys. Considering what Family Guy gets away with, this show will hopefully be just as brutal and hilarious as the original.
