Genuine Military Watches - Marathon Diver Review & Comparison - Medium & GSAR Full Size Automatic

  • Today I review and compare Marathon's newest versions of their Swiss made flagship automatic diver watches. These extremely reasonably priced and robust timepieces now come in both full and medium size. Not only are they built like tanks but they have an outstanding attention to detail, extremely high quality and reliable performance. Marathon are a legendary Canadian brand that have been making watches for almost a century and for various military organisations and governments since World War II. These watches are the real deal. Many watches these days claim to be "military watches" but don't have the proven track record.

Tritium doesn't need charging. The gas is always emitting that glow. Same thing in night sights on guns which last anywhere from 8-12 years depending on color and volume of gas. It will still glow after that time just less output. Love the channel and keep up the good work.

I like to put on your videos when i cook or wash dishes, or feel like watching something other than tv, but as such, i have to rewatch most videos to really soak in the details. Well i was making myself some pasta, and half listening (not your fault tgv) when you were talking about the weight differences between the smaller and larger pieces, instead of grams i heard GRAND and i like these watches but i quite nearly had a heart attack. Great video! Merry christmas

Great video! In a world where so many watch companies want to be associated with military users and sell all sorts of heritage stories Marathon are the real deal. Good ETA or Sellita movements, full ISO dive standard, MIL-SPEC, tough as nails and Swiss made for a very reasonable price. I like the no nonsense styling, there is a brutal logic and honesty which works. It does beg the question of standards and what standards other manufacturers use given so few seem to manufacture and test to the ISO diver's standard. If Seiko and other Japanese manufacturers can do it on their very affordable models it seems odd some very expensive luxury watches just take a "trust us" approach to testing and certification. Of course very few will use dive watches for diving, but if you buy one it's nice to know it's the real deal.

Hey TGV, great review, thanks. I am a new subscriber to your channel and this was of particular interest as I am currently awaiting delivery of the Marathon GSAR (full size) from the UK AD. Although I've got the same size wrists as you at 6.5" I have gone for the full size version as my current daily wear is a Bremont Supermarine 500 which is pretty big (43mm case, 17mm height) so after that I hope this one feels about normal :). Just wanted to say that I appreciate your videos, I like your review style and I enjoy your passion for watches. Have you done any Bremont reviews yet? I haven't searched your videos but as a Brit who likes divers watches you should check out the Supermarine, I love mine!

I have the Tudor Pelagos LHD (wristwatch check) but I like the idea of having a true military diving watch as well. I'd probably only take it on trips to the US since it's military issue and use the Pelagos elsewhere as it's more 'anonymous' if that makes sense. Will see if I can blag one from Marathon!
On a side note I was really interested in the Ball dive watch that had a Celsius measurement on it but went with the Pelagos instead. I'm based in London so it would have been a gamble to get a ball watch without trying it on first. I'm spending most of the next three months in Atlanta and Santa Monica and will be looking out for some cool watch shops to browse!
    Thanks for a great review!

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  8 років тому

      +Mr Cholmondeley Excellent question.
I think with drilled lugs you can have a special spring bars with longer ends that are far stronger, however you can only change them with drilled lug holes. The Marathons come with them, so a very worthy point to bring up.

As always great and detailed review.
I personally don't find the designs attractive, the watches seem a bit to thick to me, maybe it's the depth of the dial. However, I never handled one in person, and often impressions change when the watch is seen in the metal.

Very thorough review TGV. Would you compare these directly to one of the tool watches from Sinn? I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Just an FYI the mid size felt very small on my 6.25" flat wrist...I prefer 38mm watches typically. It's the actual dial size without the bezel that makes it look like a child's watch, its really really tiny. Definitely will be ordering the full size to check it out! Build quality felt amazing

This is a long shot but, how'd the gsar feel? I have the same wrist size and have been wondering what to get. I previously had an skx013 (similar dimensions to the msar) that I thought was too small but I'm worried about the lug to lug of the gsar

  • @claytonayers6128

Did you say what size your wrists were? I also have a submariner and it fits nicely in the middle of my wrist, I only have 7 inch wrists so I am not sure about the size of the full size GSAR? I also have a LUMINOX original navy seals watch which measures roughly 44 mm lug to lug, and it fits comfortably on my wrist. Any information would be much appreciated thank you.

I know exactly how you feel about Mid size. I have full size SAR and Mid size TSAR and wear Mid size more than the full size. It's great for work-out (small and light). It may be small in diameter, but has lot of presence.

Tritium gas tubes are awesome! Wish more companies utilized them. Would also be really cool if there was a place to buy them aftermarket to modify watches.

Since they are radioactive, their importation is government controlled and only a few watch brands with them are available in the U.S.

Hey TGV. Iv been eating pannetone for the past 2 weeks. Just wanted to bring up a point about the Sellita sw200 movement... isn't it almost identical to the ETA 2824-2? I beleive Eta lost their patent to theirs allowing other manufacturers to copy the design. I may be wrong but if you know otherwise do correct me.
    Merry christmas!

Another great review of a great watch! With so many dislikes, I suspect some crank with a hate on for this channel has a number of youtube accounts, and logs in and presses the dislike button.
I rather like the miniature tank, but I suspect it would not fair well on the battlefield.

Tritium will glow for 25 years. If you are stuck in a cave for 3 days luminova will give up a few hours in but tritium will glow the whole time.

Yeah because we buy Sinn UX's because we dive 12k deep, or buy Speedmasters because we're astronauts...
What if you keep your watches in a box in a closet and want to wear one before going out at night? If you had a tritium watch you wouldn't have to charge the lume first and it would be much brighter.
Maybe getting stuck in caves isn't a danger if you spend your days behind a keyboard but some of us actually go outside...

This was an excellent and comprehensive review. I've been looking at the "medium" diver's watch for a little while now and this video might just have pushed me over the edge.
Might I ask what is your wrist size? I've got fairly small ones myself, 6 inch circumference, with a "width/diameter" of approximately 47 to 50mm. With no access to try them on in person, I'm concerned the medium might not fit me.

It's worth noting that, while there is a CAGE (parts number) for this watch, it doesn't meet the dial requirements for general issue because the dial is supposed to be completely free of manufacturer info and only have a rad symbol. I do love these watches though and wish that we all got issued one instead of having to buy our own. Reference MIL-PRF-46374G for the "mil-spec" standard for watches.

Nice review, thanks for sharing. Been a big fan of these watches having purchased my first one in 2007. Now own 5 of them. The Tritium is good for 25 years so it lasts more than just one full night, never needs to be recharged. As for the weak points: 1) Bezel insert & Triangular marker - damage easily but are also easily replaced. 2) Crown - material is soft and threads strip easily and crowns break every few years. The good news is that since the crown material is softer than that of the crown screw down point, you never have to worry about damage to the watch body. As a general practice, anytime I make a purchase of a used on, I send it out and have the crown and bezel insert replaced. If the actual bezel is damaged, it too can easily be changed for about $80.00 (part only). Again, I'm a big fan. I mention the crown and bezel as weak points but actually these are strengths when compared to many other watch manufactures such as Luminox. I recently purchased two Deep Dive watches which run about the same price as the Marathon GSAR. One of the bezels was damaged and Luminox does NOT replace bezels, they will only provide a new case which is extremely expensive. What a mistake I made with this purchase. So glad I have the Marathons. Lastly, the ETA 28-24 is a real workhorse with both the ETA 28-24-2 and the Sellita acting as exact clones.
