If I were a resident at this retirement complex, I’d be overjoyed with the progress Lee. Long term gains, far outweigh having to cut right back, regarding the hedges. Looking at how they were; yes, nice green colour but looking like a rollercoaster ride!!! Hedges are all about being straight and level. All these will look a real treat, in the long term. No complaints from me, whatsoever. Looking forward to future updates. Many thanks to sharing with us Lee 👍👍👍

That’s the thing with Lonicera hedges, they need to be constantly kept in check to maintain a nice shape or they’ll collapse on themselves. Great work, I do love a hedge reduction/reshaping👍🏼 Also, hedges look so much better when they’re cut to a specific line, i.e a path edge. It’s amazing how much path, garden people lose to overhanging hedges🤯

Was on my daily walk this morning and encountered one of those hedges... it's dangerous for pedestrians as we get shoved out toward traffic so good for you taking the step of pruning it back. It will look so much nicer when they see the new growth and its cut properly in future,

Those hedges will be fine, as you said. I remember doing that to a lonicera nitida, and a delivery guy stopped and said "Oh, it won't thank you for that!" Everyone's an expert.. 🙄 It greened up nicely next year.

Great job and I totally agree , some people have no idea about cutting hedges etc . They look far better nice and straight and level.Ive have just spent weeks with new jobs reducing and trying to get things back into shape with hedges alone it’s a lot of extra hard work but very satisfying when it’s done properly and the customer see’s the difference.

I’m 100% with you, I’m a massive advocate of cutting hard back. The fact is non gardeners do not know what they are talking about but they will argue with you, it’s upsetting 😂 in a way it’s why I prefer dealing with one customer rather than a complex such as this.. where you have like 100 bosses 😂 I can’t stand getting looks.. I’ve had situations such as yours and you’ll get them coming out “what have you done you’ve killed it” etc these are comments that freak me out because you try to explain and they shut their ears off. Those sort of encounters spoil my day. You and I both know that the way you’ve cut those shrubs is correct, and given some sunshine and a little rain and you’ll see a haze of green in no time. But people won’t be told.

@@LHLgardenservicesWatched it! Apartment block jungle bashing. I fully understand, as a fellow pro-gardener, you’re getting the area down IN ORDER to make it into a wild ish area, there’s maintained wildness and there’s scruffy. Again however it’s an example of why I don’t like doing complexes such as that.. you’ve got 100 “customers” all of a sudden, it’s a lot of pressure. I applaud you for doing it, and I’ve been offered similar and turned them down. I know they’re a good money spinner but I’d rather the one customer to deal with, husband and wife, or a family, or even just one person, and you know where you are. It’s stuff like blowing with a noisy machine, you just know you’re upsetting people and when there’s a whole heap of them it’s woah, it’s a lot to deal with. I take my hat off to you

Holey moley Lee, that was brutal. Necessary, but brutal. When it greens up again it will look really smart, but as the saying goes: no gain without pain. I quite like the curved tops, but the sides and ends definitely need to be straight, especially next to the car parking and roads as they would reduce visibility and scratch the paintwork of residents vehicles. I just hope that the hedges green up before you apply mosskiller to the lawns. I don't think they will like bare hedges and black lawns all at the same time. Could you green up the lawns first with seaweed, then apply mosskiller in a few weeks time when the grass really gets going? 🤔

I like the side clean-up but I’d leave the top alone . If you cut it, you’re forced to cut the other 200 feet of adjacent shrubs to match. With the sides looking smart and the tops flowing, I prefer that look. Sometimes, in some locations, too square becomes unnatural. Sure in a French garden you look fora perfectly symmetrical appearance but on border hedges a flowing top looks nice too. Just a thought. Cheers

Shrubs I like naturalistically (selective) pruned to show the habit of the species. That's seldom possible for the jobbing gardener though one can charge top dollar.
Once shrubs are hedged though, I prefer then almost plumb, square and level. They should be slightly wider at the bottom than the top for the lower leaves to get light. It might be ordinary but it brings visual cohesion to the street when all the hedges are similarly cut.
I hate ones which flare out at the top and ones where the person who cut it thinks themselves some kind of creative artirt because they've cut chamfers or curves..(I'm thinking specifically of my neighbour who cut his front hedge taller and wider at the ends with top flare out, Just why? it looks crap and isn't good for light). I'm fixing that by cutting guide lines where the hedge is over my property line. He's getting the hint.
I guess people are entitled to have their hedges the way they like them as long as the I y are not encroaching on public amenity.
I do like actual skilled sculptures, cloud and Japanese pruning like those of Jake Hobson (Niwaki).

My advice (s’alright, I don’t charge!) is to get the Management Co. to send a note to all residents explaining that they finally have a professional gardener extraordinaire whose long term (6-12 month) plan is to bring the elegance and sophistication of Blenheim Palace to their little community. It should be obvious to anyone that you know what you’re doing - the improvement, though brownish!, is already amazing. Those hedges (I had one!!) should never be so wide and out of control. I’m all for uniformity: straight back ‘n’ sides (and tops…..later). Roll on next year. Stay brave and take any criticism on the chin!

I like the contrast between straight sides and undulating tops. The tops are reminiscent of rolling hills and makes for more interest in the overall landscape. At least 1 fence has an undulating top too.

Owwww sooooo much better Lee & defo go for straight tops..... umm just a thought are you able to knock on the doors of the residents who have those large totally overgrown & out of shape hedges to introduce yourself & let them know that although the hedge is going to look a bit sorry for itself for a while the benefits of them being able to walk safely & get more daylight into their homes PLUS being able to see more of the coming & goings far out weigh the short wait of it regrowing... maybe even walk them out after you've cut it to show them how much safer the pathway is for them, their visitors & everyone etc etc? you will hav them eating out of your hand for making them feel special & that you care about their saftey....... Just a thought Oh and if you also talk to management about the hedges they will be for armed in case any residents go to speak to them about it???? ..... Have a nice weekend & really enjoying all these videos that your sharing with us Many thanks Lee 😘
