I love that phrase ‘white knuckling it through weight loss’ - it’s the reason my weight has been like a yo-yo for so many years. It works as long as my ‘willpower’ or ‘inspiration’ lasts, and the smallest thing - a bad day at work, an argument, a mean comment, basically anything that threw me off my regiment and the cycle continued. It was never going to sustainable.

    Non negotiables for me while getting healthy after surviving cancer but still being depressed;
    1. Always have healthy snacks in the house, and limit the amount of unhealthy snacks I have access to. If I do crave a 'bad' snack, I limit the amount I take by portion control; putting it in a small bowl or only a handful or a certain number. I have no issues with keeping the main meals of the day smaller but still filling and healthy, but I'm a big snacker when bored and/or stressed.
    2. Do something fun for myself every day. This can be reading, gaming or other hobbies. Life goes on, but I need to consciously make time to enjoy it even when I'm busy or stressed.
    3. Take enough rest and have a good daily rhythm. Get to bed and out of bed at around the same times, have meals at the same times, etc. This trains me to halt my cravings if I'm close to a mealtime, and to prevent myself from taking naps throughout the day when feeling down.
    4. Go outside every day, even if it is only in the garden or a short walk. Fresh air and daylight for at least half an hour a day. I got my partner to play Pokemon GO, which got him to want to go on walks multiple times a day, and he now motivates me to do so as well.
    5. Remind myself I am a beautiful person and if I want to loose weight and be healthier that this is a decision I make for myself and not to please others. I do not follow their pace or their advice, I do what feels right for me. The only advice I take is from my own doctors, and not everyone around me that thinks they are helping me and not realizing it puts more pressure on me. No, I am doing this by myself and for myself

Sometimes life happens differently and I may get get a lil or a lot less sleep than that, then I have to adjust my food and exercise a bit for those days.// A new habit as of about 7 months ago, when i began this journey, is eating lots of probiotic rich foods, has been a HUGE help.....miso, sauerkraut, yogurt, kimchi, kefir, cottage cheese.

So appreciate you mentioned habits vs will power! For me, that was key to allowing greater self compassion. I found I “judged” myself less if I approached my weight loss from a habit. Also the habits I had to grow into sometimes included letting people go who didn’t support my goals of better health habits. It’s an interesting position to be in, but big growth as a result! Thank you for sharing your success!

I lost over 70 pounds and loved this video. I was always exercised, so very early I realized it was the calories I was consuming. I had my hip replaced 2 years ago and retired and made the commitment to get in my best shape. Loved that you said you mentally have to make the commitment. I use an app to count calories and meal prep. I also added daily walking, which not only helps me maintain, but puts me in a happy place. I have to consciously commit to being and feeling my best every day. Thank you!

    Good non-negotiables!
    Mine have been
    1. drinking at least 1,5 liters of water or unsweetened tea every day
    2. going outside for at least 30 minutes every day
    3. eating whatever I am craving in moderation (more if it’s veggies, less if it’s chocolate)

    1. Fueling my body with what's best for my needs, not giving in to what's convenient for others. This has been my biggest battle for the longest time. My not eating something is not a judgement of others. I'm so very weary of that. You do you, I"ll do what's best for me. We can enjoy mealtime together and have different things. Really, it's ok.
    2. I have eliminated things that cause me major inflammation and GI distress. I will not consume them any more. It's not a "fad". Living in the bathroom, not able to function more than a short dash from the bathroom is extraordinarily distressing and no way to live. I have finally gotten past the anger of "I can't have that but they can" and now see those inflammatory things as the poison they are to my body.
    3. No alcohol. Too many health issues and serious medications. "Just a little" is still too much. No thanks. Again, my body is not a judgement of others. It's what's best for me. Besides, I make a mean mocktail! So many fun things to mix with nowadays.😎
    4. Variety. I can't stagnate on the same old routine all the time. I have my trusted go-to meal combos, but I need to mix it up too. I've discovered many new things exploring new foods, substitutes, and new ways of cooking. Actually enjoying cooking now when I have time (usually don't during the week, so, yeah, meal planning).
    5. Coffee. It's the one consumable pleasure I won't give up. It doesn't cause me GI upset (which is a pleasant surprise) or any health issues. I consume in moderation, but I still enjoy my morning iced coffee.
Down 79 pounds in the past 15 months. No pills, shots, or surgery. Just a lot of work with my dietician and doctor on changes to diet. Also got through TKR this summer, need to replace other knee next summer. Off several meds and lower dose on another.

One of my non-negotiables is protein. I used to eat a deplorable amount of it, I was hungry ALL the time. But now I make sure I get enough and when I started doing that I started looking at balancing my nutrients and suddenly, things got easier. It was easier to go long period without eating, it was easier for me to work out, it was easier for me to sleep. All these things that had been holding back and I had used as excuses were suddenly no longer like a wall I had to climb and more like a little fence I could simply step over.

I agree with you. Daily exercise is very important (running, walking etc), calories counting is also important if you gain weight easily as it keeps in track how much you consume and how much you spend as everyone starts to gain weight if they consume more than they spend.

I try to plan my meals such that I know what I'm eating each day, that way if it's heading towards meal time and formerly I might have ordered fast food and binged I now make myself eat the planned meal and then I no longer feel the urge to binge.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ oh Carla. I’m still struggling. I still have the last 15lbs to go and just can’t keep to my plan. It looks like this: I start strong with the plan (counting calories, sticking to a deficit, no bread, and a few other rules to help me stay in a deficit) and then a few days in I have a hard day or a busy day or break one rule and go rogue. Then I just give up and feel like a failure just to repeat it all over again. I’m two years postpartum and 60lbs down (10lbs lighter than before baby). Did you struggle at the end? My mental health has played a big role in this and I have a much healthier relationship with food, but I think sometimes that’s the thing that derails me…but I think the feeling of defeat plus the thought “good enough” keeps me from getting to “great”. Do you have any advice or insight? You are such a blessing to me! Thank you for everything!

❤❤❤❤❤ Slowing down my meals really helps me to decide how much I actually need to eat. Stopping every bite or two to check in and see if I still feel hungry (or to stop before I am too full) helps me to not overeat.
I dont really enjoy counting calories so this is a habit I can use whenever and wherever I eat.
An unexpected bonus is that I enjoy my meals more.

My non-negotiables were pretty much the same, except for mental health and journaling. I am neurodivergent, for me it was about curating my environment as a way of reduction of unnecessary stress and stress response wreaking havoc on my system and ability to rest and sleep.
Also somebody here mentioned getting enough protein. Sufficient daily protein intake worked wonders for me. I had awful cramps in my legs and torso for years, and, while I still need anticonvulsants from time to time, sufficient protein stopped spastic pains waking me in the middle of the night from sleep.

You really have me thinking about the habits we have. The ones which we learned from our family growing up….i come from a family who used to give me massive plate fulls of food, food was love, we didn’t have a lot of money so my mum used to pack meals out with the carb element to fill us up cos it was cheap. Huge portions of mash or rice. Always putting extra sugar on cereal, ive continued a lot of these habits even though I know they aren’t correct anymore. Calorie counting is the only successful way I’ve ever lost weight in my life, it’s basic math and science. It makes absolute sense, but the habits we built up over our lives make it very challenging❤❤❤❤❤

🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻 Great video, Karla! Eating while standing up (whether mindlessly snacking at the fridge or tasting my food while cooking) is a habit that I've been doing a good job at breaking. Even if I'm washing grapes for a snack--maybe I'll let myself sneak one before going to the dining table, but I force myself to sit down on the kitchen stool in order to do eat that one little grape. This really helps me stay mindful of my food intake. Thank you for asking. And thank you for all that you share with us!

Thanks so much for this video it is so helpful, especially the bits on working on mental health and habits. It's been nearly a year since I finished therapy and I'm glad I took the time to work improving my mental health. I've spent the last year working on my mental health habits and establishing a new habit around alcohol (I just don't drink at home and as a result I only have one or two drinks a week which is soo much better than before and I don't feel deprived) and last week I did my first week of calorie counting as I finally felt ready :) 💖💖💖💖💖

🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗Hi Carla, I've followed your channel for the longest time, and I love your honest and encouraging information. Thank you 😊 x
I love walking, which is a habit i formed from c-19 erra. Something good came from that scary times.
Can you please share or recommend the most comfortable walking shoes, I've tried different brands, including brooks, clarks, now trying adidas but I can't seem to find any that is comfortable for daily 5k walking without aches and pains.
Thanks for sharing your list of none negotiables. Airfryer has sorted that dilemma of bulk cooking for me. Thankfully, I love and enjoy cooking everything from fresh, no ingredients list to worry about, which is a win-win 😊x
I'm struggling to banish prosecco habit which i know is derailing my progress x
    A big thank you ❤x

I've been calorie counting for about 3 months now, and I almost never want to stop. I'd been doing that guesswork you mentioned, and I told myself I'd only do it long enough to get a better idea of how many calories my usual foods contained, but now a very slow 8lbs down and it feels like the healthiest way I've ever approached it. I'd done keto for years, and still stay pretty low carb, but that initial 10lbs down on keto seemed like only water and I never lost more than that. Cal counting feels well-paced and educational. I used MyNetDiary app (free, never needed the upgrade) if anyone wants a rec.

    🎆🎇🎆🎇🎆 (I felt like being shiny *^^*)
I will say therapy will be tricky at times. There's always more to unpack than you think, and there's moments that are just like, "Wait, what?!"
I'm trying to get things in motion for myself, but I think one of my biggest issues is perfectionism. Last week, I was having issues with pain, and it completely threw me off. I had to remind myself to give myself grace, and that it's okay that things will not always be perfect. Remembering that I'm human I'd say is critical for me in my journey. There's times I think to myself, "I can't do this, because then x and y will happen!" Those things may happen, but being adaptable is just as important as committing to the journey as well. Things will change, and that's okay! ^_^ I'd rather give my body the time it needs to rest. Otherwise, I may end up hurting myself and going to a hospital because I was stubborn. (My daughter would NOT appreciate that! >

❤❤❤❤❤ @Carla I think the biggest ah ha for me on this subject (and what wasn't working in my favor) was that I had never really considered any of my self care as non-negotiable rather I've been in the habit of thinking all my positive self care can be compromised if something else comes up, which should not be true. This ranges from sleep and exercise to eating and even just taking a break. I realize that's not reasonable and I'm going to think today on what could and should be non-negotiable for me.
As to video topics, I am curious how much you have or haven't listened to other people's journeys while you've been on your own. Like, how much do you consider versus block out? I think you once said that you'd stopped watching food videos. Is that still true? I'd be curious to hear more about that and when you may have realized your mental habits had actually shifted in a way that was more healthy for sustainable weight loss. ❤❤❤❤❤
