I'm 73. About 50 years ago in a car accident my back was broken. No CT or MRI back then. I had to lie flat in bed for 3-1/2 months and let it heal as it would. That left me 3" shorter and with a 60 degree levorotoscoliosis. When I started walking in my 50's I was in terrible pain after 2 blocks. I got walking sticks and immediately could walk a mile before the same pain. That got better and in the process my arms got stronger. Years later I broke a hip and was told if I could walk again I may never be able to do stairs. 5 years later (at 67) I walked around Lake Cuicocha in Ecuador which was 12 miles and 218 flights of stairs. Very proud of that.

I know this is strange, but I crawl. I started because I lost use of my inner ear from a brain injury. I had begun to compensate by using my eyes to balance myself. But the benefits of crawling went beyond helping my balance issues. I began to notice that my abs were getting stronger. Babies crawl to strengthen their upper core and to develop inner ear. So they are prepared to walk. I had to go back and develop again what was lost.

I walk around the inside of my house for exercise. I set a timer every 35 minutes. I do 5 laps around my house, which is 1000 steps/10 minutes. I do this at least 10 times in a day. I end up doing 10,000 steps per day. On a good day, I will reach 14,000 steps, which is 9.5kms or 2.5 hours. My personal best has been 18,000 steps. 18 months ago I hit my tipping point when I stepped on the scale at my highest weight. 5'2" and 189lbs. I was mortified. I started walking. First with my little shih tzu's around the block....then to the park and back and now we walk to the river and back almost every day. In 18 months I went from 189lbs to 125lbs. I sleep better at night. I also went to walmart and got plantar fascitis insoles. What a GAME CHANGER! I crave healthier foods, no longer crave sweets and what walking has done FOR my mental health is nothing short of a miracle. Getting outside, keeping my head up to look at my surroundings, getting off social media....it sounds cheezy but I found myself. I found Ali. I talk to the dogs, I talk to myself and I talk to God on my walks. It happened so organically and it was a slow change but a change that I so desperately needed. Now, to get rid of my mommy pouch and I'll be ready for swimsuit season. (We put a pool in 2 years ago...OURSELVES!!!) This will be the first summer I'm actually looking forward to in a LONG TIME. Not because I'm thinner but because I'm healthier and very proud of myself that I took control of my life. Is my body instagram perfect? no. That's not and was never my goal. I'm 48. I'm too old for that shit. LOL.

@@jenpsimmons9031 Start slow, start with very easy stuff....whatever is easiest to make a simple lifestyle change. Do it one step at a time and make yourself stick to that change one step at a time. I think the main reason for me that losing weight was a punishment for me. Exercising, eating my carbs....those things. I've done keto and put the weight back on. It's not a way for me to actually live long term. Preplanned meals didn't work for me either. I like yummy food. So for me what worked is one small change at a time so I was comfortable with it and I did it on MY terms finding things that worked and didn't work along the way. Walking helped tremendously. Low impact, maximum effect and it's free. My husband comes with me 3 days a week and the marriage benefits were nothing short of a small miracle. He quit drinking on his own. On his OWN! I make these strawberry things that I pretty much have with me at all times and I sip on them all day so that I have something in my stomach at all times. I clean out the frozen strawberry section of Walmart every time I go. I also to the drink section and buy the cherry seltzer with 0 calories. I blend both of them with a little ice and freeze them, set them out on the counter or if I'm in a hurry zap them in the microwave to soften them a bit....about a minute and they are like a frozen strawberry slushie/icee. They taste just like a sweetened strawberry....so good. Low carb, low sugar. I walk and then I just eat what I want when I get hungry. You got this! If I can do this, you can! You just have to have the will to make one change at a time otherwise it feels like a punishment and you'll quit. I think that is why most weightloss journey's fail. It HAS to be a long term lifestyle change.

Walking is so under appreciated! I was an overweight teen (almost 200 pounds) and all I did was decide to cut out or cut back on junk and sweets, and I walked everywhere with my friends. I ended up losing 50 pounds over a couple years and I kept it off. Now at almost 30 I count calories and have started some weight training, I’m down to 135. ☺️

I still eat the same amount I did when I was obese I just am eating salads instead of ice cream. I didn’t even walk much. I just walked a few miles a few times a week. And the weight has been falling off of me. I’m 30 pounds away from my goal. I am currently 150. Hoping to be 120 by the end of the year. Carla, I discovered your video today and have listened to two of them and found them to be informative. I live in USA and my home area has beautiful walking paths, however they are secluded and thickly covered with trees as if you are walking through a tunnel. I love walking at 5 am, but it is still dark and I don't feel safe. I want to spread a word of Mindfulness and Caution. When I walk in the daylight, I am still mindfull of my surroundings. I walk alone and I DO NOT wear any headphones. I want to hear everything around me and behind me. I am not being paranoid. I live in a safe area, but bad things happen in safe places. Instead of listening to headphones when walking, I focus on my form, enjoy the beauty of nature, and I use the quite time to reflect on my goals, and problem solve. So for women, protect yourself by being mindful and enjoy your walk!

I battled chronic health problems for a few years, and was so unhappy with life. I tried to follow one of Caroline Givan's programs but it was so hard, and I wasn't really dropping much weight. Then I heard in one of her videos that she walks one hour every day, so I decided to try it as well. Best thing ever. Besides the fact that my dog needed to get more exercise to stay out of trouble.
So I started shorter distance walking for a few weeks, then slowly increased the distance over a couple months. Now I go one hour regularly, over hills and on a dusty dirt road at 3 pm in a tropical country which means its usually very hot. I feel so much better. My hormones are balanced, my weight is down, my stress levels are way down, and my dogs are so much happier. I LOVE my walks now. I feel so much better about everything.

The right insoles can be a game changer. Also, when I started walking, I would walk straight out from my neighborhood and then turn around at whatever half way time I wanted. For example, if I ended up eating something unhealthy, I would almost always give up on any exercise goal for the day or vice versa.

I wanted to get healthier so I planed on walking an hour a day and naturally I wanted to do it with correct form. I grew up with diagnosed flat feet but only found out while researching the correct walking form that you are actually supposed to walk on the outside of your foot and not use the whole damn thing. So I went for it with correct form. And after a week of that I found out that you can actually get tendinitis in your feet. After walking incorrectly for 26 years my feet just weren’t used to being used in the right way. I then told my mum about my findings and she just said: “You don’t have to feel stupid I am 51 years old and just found I’ve been making the same mistakes.”

Carla, I‘m feeling motivated! I just found this video. I‘m around 5‘5“ (165 cm) and 127 kg. It’s bad. I do walk my dog daily, but my dog has aged and is almost 13, so walks have become shorter and much slower, especially during summer. I‘m pretty much out of cardiovascular shape. I’m not a morning person, but since menopause has started, I‘m usually up around 4 a.m. I‘m 57 by the way. I could see the benefit of going early just to be alone. Right now just going to the grocery stores has me breaking out in sweat and my face turns bright red. I‘ve tried so many diets and I‘ve lost weight, but it never sticks. I‘m a stress and emotional eater and I adore cake. It’s hard. I‘ve been overweight since puberty, at 18 I was around 180 pounds. I‘m not looking to get skinny, I‘d just like to lose 30-40 kg and regain some fitness. I also have a stationary bike that’s been collecting dust for a few years. I find that beginning and sticking to it is hardest. Then there’s always „what if someone sees me“ thoughts. I also think I Walk completely wrong. Oh boy, this will be some challenge. I‘m not even sure I‘ll make it 15 min in one stretch, haha. Thank you for making this video!

Do what you can, 15 minutes it's a good start....
If you really wanna see results you may have to change your diet a bit, and do intermittent fasting. I personally had to give up most of the carbs, I am eating mostly mediteranian diet, protein and vegetables, within 6 hours a day.
      But its so worth it.

I recently spoke with my new family health provider about losing weight and getting healthier. She suggested that I take walks during my lunch break at work. I'm a working mom to a 2 and 4 year old and sometimes my lunch break is the only time i have to myself. She said to just get started but to work up to the point where I may need to bring an extra pair of clothes, you know, exercising. So it's been a few weeks and I'm actually enjoying it. I'm also taking walks at home with my kids and they LOVE it.

So walking for an hour is out at this time. That and the fact that we live in the Sierras of Northern California and we are now buried in about 7 ft. of snow. I am going to practice walking daily for 15 minutes each day, first thing when I get out of bed (5:30). I didn’t weigh this much when I was 9 months pregnant with our son and had gained 40 lbs.! It feels so good to walk. I especially like it when it's really cold. The sensation of being hot inside and cold on the outside is incredible. I can walk 18 miles a day every other day but I like 12 best. I was in my house for 10 years. Finally ... I got to get out. I just started by walking to my neighbor's house ... then to the end of the street ... then down the street ... then to a half a mile away ... then a mile ... then a mile and half then 3 miles then 6 miles and then 12 ... and then 18. I took me about a year. It was the best year. I felt so good. It feels sooooo good.
Uphill feels the best too, surprisingly. It just takes practice ... start out small and a little more every so often.

But then I started walking, 2km, 3km, 5km, 7km. It improved my fitness so quickly! After 3 months I began running 1 km on the treadmill, then 2km, and today 3 km of running on the treadmill, and 3 km of walking outside in the park! As a longterm runner I had no idea that walking was so powerful for fitness and health!🙂❤. If ever again some problem strikes that makes it difficult to run, I will know I can maintain a good level of fitness through the wonderful exercise of walking!

I realized that the main reason for doing this is not about the success but the inspiration I've been providing some people with my stories while helping others do the same as I shared the lessons & experiences through making videos to have a sense of meaningful purpose. Therefore, I’m planning to quit nursing to pursue youtube full time as there are lots of issues in our traditional health systems as these don’t align with my values. It’s a huge learning curve but I love helping people through making videos.
Also, as part of my video creation progress, I’m switching to a better editing software and a camera so the learning curve is much higher and slows down the completion speed of my next videos so please hang on tight! I broke both my ankles while I was hiking. I used to run anywhere from 7 to 30 miles per week. After getting surgery on my ankles and titanium plates to ensure the breaks healed, I couldn’t run anymore. I ended up getting depressed and putting on 120 pounds because running was my outlet, so one day I decided to walk. I knew it wasn’t as intense as running and I would get the runners high but it’s all a myth. Walking is just as great, you just need to walk for longer. Now I walk with some pain in my ankles but it’s low impact so I can do it instead of running. I started on Nov 22/22 and as of today I’m down 100 pounds and have been able to keep off the weight. I walk around 30 to 120 minutes a day. I also fast and cut out all sugar. Last month I actually got recognized by the mayor of the city where I live because people have noticed me walking everywhere everyday. I actually got an award from the mayors office for encouraging physical fitness. It’s amazing what life can bring you when you are depressed and start thinking positive. I was also a little slow in school so this is a big win for me. Some people jokingly call me Forrest Gump, I take as a compliment because he had a great life and did all that running but I walk. Get walking it will change your life!!!

I have been walking every single day since May (minus a few bad weather days etc) and the past few days my thighs have been so sore and my husband was just urging me to take a day off. Well, truth be told the only stretching I do before a walk is my putting my foot up on the curb to stretch my calf for a few seconds. 😆 This was such a helpful reminder that I need to take better care of my body by stretching and I never really thought about how to walk properly! Needless to say I couldn’t go walking because of the pain. I recently started Keto and a daily detox as well as doing Qi Gong in the morning and resistance training to get my mobility back.
