Mk7 Volkswagen GTI - Oil Separator Replacement/PCV DIY (Beetle, Passat, Jetta, Alltrack, and Golf)

  • ►Mk7 Volkswagen engines feature a crankcase ventilation system (PCV) that is crucial to your engine's performance. If your crankcase breather/oil separator is failing, VW offers an updated genuine breather replacement.
Although Volkswagen doesn't consider the PCV system a regular maintenance system, it's well known that these parts fail quite regularly. The symptoms are easily diagnosed as other failures, however, the PCV system should always be checked early on in the diagnostic process as it's easy to replace/repair and the parts are affordable.
Today Aaron Davis is here to show you how simple of a job it is to remove and replace the PCV on top of your engine with just a few basic hand tools.
Symptoms of a failing PCV system can start to show at any time. However, most people begin noticing symptoms around 60,000 to 80,000 miles. PCV system issues show up in many different ways, with some being easier to diagnose than others.
    The symptoms are:
    Vacuum Leaks
    Illuminated Check Engine Light
    Illuminated Oil Pressure Light
    Rough Idle
    High Oil Consumption
    Lean & Misfire Codes P0300 & P0171
    Idle Regulation Codes
    Whistling Noise from Engine Cover
Oil Leak from Rear Main Seal

I successfully completed this PCV swap on Saturday while doing my spark plugs and coil packs (since I already was going to have them out). It was much easier than I expected and any questions were answered when reviewing the vid again. I've noticed a vast improvement in my car's idle consistency- hopefully this was the gremlin I've been chasing after.
Thanks for the DIY vid and the parts! 10/10

A friend’s niece just spent $1,900 today to have the valve and spark plugs changed on her 2016 Golf with 70k miles. The shop also did an injector cleaning and oil change. Do you know what the cost of a genuine oil separator valve is? I see tons of knockoffs for $30 and up but it appears a more or less genuine part is $200 or more. The shop charged nearly $800 for the part.

I saw a video that says if you remove the oil cap when it’s running and it pulls a strong vacuum / upsets the cars idle substantially then the PCV is bad. Is that accurate? I tried it on my car and it seems to respond just as described above and I have been chasing a cyl4 misfire for a few weeks now. I’ve changed plugs, coils, had intake valve carbon cleaning done, etc so I’m thinking maybe PCV at this point

My 17’ GTI is consuming or leaking about 1 qt of oil a month. I took it to a shop and they said they couldn’t find a leak anywhere. Would a bad pcv valve cause oil consumption? My 2020 Jetta GLI with an EA888.3 has the same exact PCV valve system and is starting to show signs of failure at 66k miles. I did follow the steps in the video to remove the factory installed PCV. However, the PCV body atop the valve cover is not coming off of the valve cover despite my best efforts. It is behaving as if it is stuck/vacuum sealed to the valve cover even with all seven T30 bolts loose and all outlet hoses detached.
Has FCP Euro or anyone else who conducted this repair experienced a PCV that is stuck to the valve cover? If yes, what was your strategy to remove it? I am doing everything in my power to avoid prying on the PCV to avoid damaging the mating valve cover surface and other surrounding parts. Any help is appreciated!
