I have been troubleshooting multiple error codes for at least a year to the point where I either wanted to catch our Tiguan on fire or put a Free sign on it. The PCB valve fixed it all! My wife treats me like a hero. I could just give you a huge hug man. Thank you for such great instructional videos.
your next engineered failure may not be as trivial... such as valve timing relatedcodes 😂 German engineers are doing their best to force drivers into buy Japanese cars... anyway it's still Bosch licensed tech regardless 👍🏻

+HumbleMechanic .. I just replaced it this morning. Car started doing a loud screeching noise two days ago. After checking your videos and diagnosing the problem, I ordered the part from Deutsche and replaced it myself. Very easy DYI and fix. Thank you for all the help you provide to us VW owners. (we really need it, lmao).
Great video Humble as always. A week or so ago my 2013 gti started idle revving. It would go up to over 2k rpm at stops a couple times before returning to normal. (750 rpm or so) Seeing this video and others forum posts on this problem made me think the pvc was the likely problem. Turns out my local auto store carries just the diaphragm hockey puck sized part of the pvc. So with a little work i snapped out the old and just like you mention, the diaphragm was torn. Put in the replacement and its back to normal. thanks again for your vids.
My rs5 did the same thing right after I tuned it. And I recently had one night where it took a few times to turn over and smelled like it ran lean. Unfortunately mine requires 2 and they are like $600 total. Appreciate your comment. Pushing me to check this
@@theeinsuranceguy How do you smell an engine running lean? You can smell it when it's rich, because it'll stink of fuel. But I'm not aware of a lean running engine producing any particular smell.
I put my finger over the weep hole and the pitch of the whistling changed. Any pressure applied to the cover the PCV caused the car to nearly stall. Bought the PCV, swapped it out. All is good. 45 minute job start to finish. Thank you for the great video, it saved me some $
Hi, I have just replaced mine due to smoke and a little gudder at idle, my new 1 seems to have a very strong vacuum via oil cap, also there is a slight whilst at diaphram and when I put my finger on the small hole it stops, does this sound right or have I been sold a new faulty part...
Huge, huge help. My 2010 CC had been giving me the Cylinder 3 Misfire code several months ago. I assumed it was the notorious carbon buildup and not being ready to drop the cash for repair decided to experiment with a can of Seafoam. Problem solved, no codes for 3 months! A week ago my car died while backing out of the drive one morning. No code; effortless restart. ??? A few days ago I was hit with the P2187 code and a very erratic idle. Your mention of the whistling noise struck a note with me; I'd heard that sound off and on for about a month, always at idle after highway driving. It seems you have perfectly described my issue. Parts are ordered. Thanks for saving me a lot of money at the shop.
WOW!! I need to thank you so much for this video, it saved my ass. I had NO clue why my 09 Jetta Wolfsburg was screaming at me (squealing so loud), I assumed a pulley or something belt related, never heard such a consistent squealing before. We than got a bunch of misfire error codes and P0507 which lead us to you. The car has been misfiring for over a year and no dealership or shop has been able to figure out why, I kept following the symptoms and replacing coil packs. Finally a shop told me "MAYBE" it's a dirty fuel injector which is a bigger fix on the wolfsburg because you have to take apart the engine more than most other cars. Instead of going down that route we started running fuel injector cleaner at every fill up for months, it seemed to help but the car still had misfires while starting up. We were driving around and the car seemed to be driving fine than out of thin air started the loudest squeal ever, of course we were downtown and everyone was looking at us like we were idiots. Long story short the only way I was sure of the problem was by watching your video and I found the diaphragm under the pcv valve cap/cover was torn just like you said they do. The PCV valve was also very built up with hydrocarbons and oil but I cleaned it out nicely. Now I'm looking for a replacement for the cap and diaphragm. I followed forums and people are recommending the "Dorman 917-064 PCV Diaphragm Repair Kit for Volkswagen" which you can get on amazon for less than $20. Hopefully that will come soon, car is out of service until than.
Okinawapajero Glad the video helped!!! Would you let me know what you think of that repair kit? Those valves are pricey, I would love to test another solution.
thanks and great video! Would a failing PCV on a 2.0 TSi cause oil consumption? I just had to add 2 quarts of oil in under 2k miles since my last oil change.
Thank you so much!!!!! I went through several videos that claimed to be diagnostic, but really weren't. You just clearly answered everything I was trying to figure out... Plus the added bonus of connecting my sudden oil leak. Wish I'd known that sooner. Time to get to checking my PCV!
Thanks for posting, it helped me. My 2009 Passat engine (1.8 TSI BZB) was shaking badly in the morning after a very cold night outside and had misfire error codes. In the end, the PVC was ok, but the crankshaft seal to the gearbox was leaking. I think the PVC froze and built up pressure. I replaced the PCV and the sealing ring as well as the clutch (reinforced version) at the same time (yes, the gearbox had to come out of course, grrr). Now the engine is running better than before. Best regards from southern Germany
You really saved me towing money and expensive no use mechanics ,who have been claiming that the sound comes from a faulty pulley or a worn fan-belt. Thanks so much...
Great Video exactly the issues I was having on my Audi B8 2.0 Turbo. Replaced and runs like new. I had been using oil as you mentioned as well. Thank you Kindly !
Am I correct in hearing you say, " The Rear Main Seal failure is in result of a Failed PCV valve?" Questions, PLEASE: 1) What is the correct VW part # for the OEM PCV valve as'y to determine what I have? 2) Will an aftermarket oil separator (that bolts on top of the engine like OEM), and catch can eliminate this issue? I just had to replace the REAR MAIN - Very expensive! I'm trying to prove your statement as it applies or not, to my 2013 GTI. Thanks for the info/video.
Great guidance, thanks :-) My SEAT had a hunting idle, 'too lean' codes, and a wheezy air sound after engine off. The PCV looked a bit different, but I was able to carefully prise it apart, and voila a ripped diaphragm!
Got a "system lean at idle" code yesterday in my wife's 2013 tiguan. I suspected a vacuum leak. On inspection I took the engine cover off. I found that hole on the side of the PCV valve to be sucking in a bunch of air like you mentioned. I'll try the Diaphragm repair kit and see how it goes. Thanks!
Thanx for the video . I have a golf mk5 1.4 tsi with 200 hp and i was thinking that the chain timing was of because it idle so weird. But the pcv valse was broken so that saved me al lot of work.
2012 GTi DSG just got Stratified Stage 2 tune now I got 2 code. Arm downpipe and Unitronic cold air intake. Been on cobb stage 2 for the longest while no problem until Stratified tune. P2187 and P050A
You mentioned that one of these going bad can cause oil leaks in other areas like the main seal. Once corrected does this help with those leaks or once they start you need to address those as well?
It's possible make the engine run properly without the PCV or even the Valve Cover installed. You just need to Disconnect the MAF sensor and Start the engine.
Im here again my friend. I been working on my 2007 2.0 T FSI And everytime its a new code.since i did the valve replacment crazy but its truth I dont know the reasons but im tired to spend a tons of time on this car . The goods its you are there to show me posibles causes and how to fix the problem. Tks my friend for this videos Keep doing it .
Thank you so much for the video. It saved me from going after an O2 sensor and saved my wife a lot of money. The diaphram had a torn gasket. Luckily a local part store had the Dorman part for $30. Quick and easy fix along with cheap. Thanks a ton!!
Just bought an 07 eos w/105300 miles. Drove it a week and added 1 1/2 qts with 750 miles. Went to the dealer after google check. I think I'll just replace the pcv after watching your video. Thank you.
Can you tell me about the pcv that is built in to the valve cover like on my non turbo 2.0 FSI engine code BLX. I have extreme high vacuum when engine is running and cannot remove the oil filler cap unless I turn engine off. I hear a whistling noise coming from rear main seal and a very small oil leak likely from rear main seal. Engine idles rough but drives well. Do I need to changed the valve cover to fix my issue? Thanks for all your videos you make .
Bro you're the MAN! Cant thank you enough! My 2011 has been in and out of 2 different shops 5 times and a total of 680$ later only to have to diagnose it myself...and it was the pcv valve! Seriously thank you again I can finally SHUT THIS WHISTLE OFF! My car literally sounds like a JETSONS car
Good vid, thx😊 my 1.8 tfsi runs great,no probs. If i lift the oil filler cap thete,s a minor vacuum. Is this good? Engine keeps running nicely without the oil filler cap. Thx again, good channel you got here 🎉
My 2015 Jetta started to go thru oil. Took it to my vw mechanic told me it was this unit that got "pissed" and crapped out. Had to replace the whole unit. Doesn't burn oil anymore. Love my car. Just very touchy.
I have a 2012 Audi Q5 and I am adding a 1/2 Quart of oil every 700 miles, also noticed that the oil fill cap was super hard to remove due to vacuum pressure. I replace the PCV oil separator and still had a high vacuum pressure. Is there something that I am missing, I was told that the high vacuum pressure can cause oil loss as well. Is this true and do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
I know im a year late, but I'm going to respond because I know it'll help others. Basically, a damaged PCV can lead to higher oil pressures inside the engine, and this will eventually ruin the flimsy OEM Rear Main Seal(RMS). A ruined RMS will cause oil to leak at the junction between the engine and the transmission. The PCV is fairly inexpensive to replace and it will save you a lot more money later on. A RMS replacement is a VERY costly repair because of of how involved the procedure is. Hope this helps
+Andre Thompson It is a hand full of T30 torx and you have to remove the coils. no too bad. Be careful of the rear hose. It has a small nipple that likes to break.
what causes the squeeling sound that seems to come from inside the timming chain covefr ?? my PCV diaphram is shot and am replacing it in the morning but that sound is no where near the bad part ... i thought it was the ideler bearing at first ... anywazz thanks your video solved my problem anyhow
Great video! I had a Volvo V70 which caused main seal leak, with no codes when PCV went bad. $700 to repair, ouch! I have a 2009 Passat which should be a lot less expensive (if I get a code) and especially since I can replace myself. Have you done a rear main seal replacement video? Thanks.
We have a 2014 A- 4 with a 2.0 CAED and it is blowing smoke bad we have done the PCV with a factory unit and replaced the turbo and it got better for a few weeks and now it is doing the same thing I am thinking the oil rings maybe bad. Your input would be very helpful TK U
Shane Mitchell Thanks for the suggestion. That is really more of an Audi issue than a VW issue. We have seen about 3 FSI engines and 0 TSI engines with oil consumption that falls outside of what VW says is normal. That is small fish compared to the number of PCV valves, and water pumps we see
Shane Mitchell A buddy of mine works for Audi, and he is doing about 1 set of rings every other week. I can offer my thoughts on the situation and what I "think" is happening. But that would not really be a fact based video. If you want my opinion on it, I can chat about it on a Viewer Q&A show. Is that something you would be interested in?
HumbleMechanic Thanks Charlie. Very interesting videos none the less. Main rear seal scares me a little. I bought a 2012 GTI MK6 DSG new and has some oil consumption which seems to be erratic. The car has travelled 23000Klms. Sometimes it uses none then all of a sudden its uses a lot. It always used oil from day 1. I have done some research and believe that many people are experiencing similar issues especially Audi, which uses the same TSI turbo engine. By the look of it the rings seem to be a problem and running in is crucial. Great little car to drive but I'm worried about long term reliability. I hope my worry is just an irrational fear.
Shane Mitchell There are a few issues with that powertrain. I am not sure why Audi is seeing such a high failure rate, and VW is not. For an intermittent oil consumption issue, I would REALLY be looking at the PCV or the diverter valve. Those seem to be the common intermittent issue parts.
HumbleMechanic Thanks Charlie for the info. I will look into it. Keep up with the highly informative videos. I like to learn about the things I own and potential issues, the VW/Audi dealers here in Australia are crooks and do the least amount of work under warranty they can unless they are charging you.
A failing PCV can cause also oil leaks in the turbocharger exhaust side? I have a 2.0l A4 B8 facelift 2014 (3. Gen TFSI) and my turbocharger started suddenly smoking white at the exhaust pipe. We’ve seen small streaks of oil from the turbo. Car was in the shop because of oil leakage between head and cam-housing and the PCV was also removed. I’m curious, because turbocharger had no problem before the repair... 😥 Thanks in advance!
Just did my timing chain in the tsi ( thanks fro the great vid @HumbleMechanic) ...0.04deg from 4.20! But I instantly got a idle lean bank 1 msg....Wondering I I screwed the PCB valve somehow.......
hey thanks for all your videos. I was just wondering if a bad pcv would cause my 2008 tsi to bog down or stall if i remove the dip stick. I just replaced the rear main seal and the pcv valve 6 months ago.
thank you for all of your videos. I'm not sure if this is my problem but I just started my car and engine light came on and I have a big whooshing sucking noise at idle. it seems as if it's my prpblem. I didn't have whistling. just went straight to sucking. maybe a hose? maybe a hole in my manifold (again). I have 78,000 on it. manifold has gone every 20k so far. almost time now. going to scan it soon. see what codes I have. thanks for any input you can give me.
Amb1valent chaos Differnt design but works the same. Mine just shat the bed so gonna be changing it soon. Also in the process of cleaning carbon off of my intake valves!
I had the same problem . I taken mine to a mechanic paid for a new PVC after getting the car back I was getting those 2 codes . When I went back to the mechanic they had heaps of excuses even used Snap-On scan tool and couldn't find the problem they also believed it had to do with my stage 1 tune . After year later of no boost/lag/bad idle and bad gear response/ I went and checked the hose that runs from behind pvc to the intake the hose was cracked. After some glue and self adhesive tape. Now my Golf Response/boost and doesn't have any issues .
I was able to replace the PCV diaphram with Dorman part number 917-064. Cost $18.00 Pried out the old and snapped in the new diaphram. Easy and stopped the vacuum leak. 2011 Audi A5 60K miles.
My 2012 GTI had surging idle just last weekend. I am pretty sure it had a highway speed (60mph) misfire for a month or so, engine check light came on Sunday, got it repaired and new valve fitted next day. 58,000 miles. Warranty covered full cost, running much better now.
+Linh Tran I don't want to do that. Part numbers change all the time and have different applications. It's a great idea for sure. I just don't want someone to get the wrong part.
Hi Charles, in your expert opinion.... Would an existing rear main seal leak stop, or lets say "leak less" once the PCV valve has been fixed? I have an original PCV valve on my 09 Tiguan, and the VW Dealership says it is still good, and not at fault for the lean, and misfire error codes. They state the rear main seal is the culprit for the check engine light.
Robert Milic Did you try changing your pcv before you fixed your rear main...if so did it stop leaking or leak less? I had my rear main replaced now leaking again....smh
@@uzzomuzzo1031 I haven't done much to mine yet, but I have oil leaks, engine noise, jerking when shifting gears, and more. But I actually posted this on the wrong video; I have a 2.5L MK5 Jetta (not a 2.0 engine like the one this video is for). So far, all I've done is replace the gaskets on my vacuum pump to fix my oil leak. I just did it 2 days ago but so far I think the oil leak is fixed. For now, at least.
@@kitsuvanphet8913 No, it doesn't. I've actually still neglected that issue. From what I've read online it's either because I'm low on transmission fluid, or one of the internal components in the transmission is cracked.
Great video; just had my rear main seal replaced and now I can't boost beyond 3psi, think the PCV could be the culprit? No lean, idle or misfire codes being thrown since the RMS job. Was boosting at 17ps before I took it in (dealer confirmed they did not touch ecu).
HumbleMechanic Thanks for the fast response, it was simply a case of dealer incompetence. After receiving the car back from a full day of the dealer double checking their work & the car, I ran the codes with VCDS and it was as simple as plugging the MAP sensor back in...how they overlooked it is beyond me. But now my idle continues to fluctuate since the rear main seal and I still loose boost when I shift gears so PCV will be the next to be replaced.
I am getting a whistle under boost on my 2009 A4. No engine codes or rough idle. Took apart the PCV and the main diaphragm looks fine. The small orange check valve diaphragm has a few splits in it though.Have you seen this happen before? Guessing you can’t just replace that little part...sigh. 😡
Thanks for this video, it made me focus away from a suspected leaky turbo shaft. I found a fourth way the valve can fail; mine had significant carbon build-up on the diaphram and seat. After cleaning everything is back to normal.
Hello, after upgrading to an Integrated Engineering cold air intake I get the whistle would that be a bad PCV problem no codes are thrown off. Never had the whistle before. 2014 VW CC 2.0
Just wondering if there has been any later revisions to the OEM PCV for the MK6 (I know the mk7 GTI seems to have an updated one...). I replaced mine back in 2016/2017, but do experience extreme smoking in autocross if I have to brake hard then turn hard left then accelerate out of a corner. So based on what I've read I probably need to add a catchcan in line too (want to keep it class legal...)
Think I may change mine. Have some misfires dancing around cylinders. Already fixed a misfire once with new coil packs. Looked at this last night I see a bit of oil around the outside of the diaphragm. I don't think oil should be getting out of that.
Hi, nice video, I have a 2013 tiguan 2.0, I removed the PCV and found a litle oil in front of valve and a lot of oil in the rear part of the PCV valve, but not have any issue, the engine runs good, i think that is not normal, there must be some oil in there or nothing?, thanks
Is it true, that if you take off your intake to do a carbon cleaning, and the carbon build up is moist and oily, that's a sign of a bad PVC? Recently read this somewhere, but I can't it again.
My Skoda Octavia RS 2.0 TFSI started misfire but no oil leaks or any whistle noise. Also there was none engine lights and OBD couldn't find anything wrong in the car. It has this same engine EA888 like in Volkswagen. I searched problem in Internet and found out, that it could be this PCV-valve. I changed it today and my Skoda engine is normal again. At the moment car has 72k miles (around 115k km)
Does a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta TDI have A PCV valve? That needs to be maintenance. If so do you have a video that shows how to do it? Thank you so much for any info The reason I ask is because my engine is normally not low on oil between oil changes but now it's starting to be
SEAT Leon CUPRA 2016 here, 2.0 TSI. Cracked the plastic clip on the end of the pcv pipe when pulling it out during a turbo inlet elbow swap, should I be worried? Note The pipe itself is not cracked or damaged in any way, just one of the plastic clips on the tip of the pipe (on the outside)
Thanks for the video. Definitely looks like a DIY replacement. I did however want to make sure I don't change mine unnecessarily. Would you always hear a whistling noise? Or for just some type failures? I suspect mine may be bad, but I don't hear a noise. I do have a leaking seal. Can a bad PCV cause a car to stall? My 2008 Passat LUX (2.0 TSI) with 173,000 miles will run for a bout 15 to 20 minutes and then stall. Once stalled, it will only run for a few minutes at a time. Originally, it would not even crank until it sat for 45+ minutes. I have replaced the fuel filter (definitely needed it), and now it will crank almost immediately, but not run for long. The feedback I've seen would indicate to next look at the Control Module for the in tank pump. Next would be the in tank pump and / or the high pressure pump. I did see someone mention that the PCV valve caused their passat to stall - not sure if that was unique or common.
First of all, you are a legend! 2. Is it possible to replace the only the rubber diaphram? mine is sucking a little amount of air so I suspect the rubber is starting to fail? 3. Is itpossible to open the valve on top and inspect the rubber diaphram without totally recking the part?
On the lean code instead of how some people block off the pcv vaccum/boost why not just restrict the line so it doesn’t ‘draw’ vaccuum quite so hard so it doesn’t pull oil through the main seal or other leaks.
I changed my PCV couple years ago, now I am doing the RMS, since its leaking slowly. I don't need another PCV correct? I can use the PCV I installed in the past?
Hey Charles, Hope your doing well, what about PCV fail symptoms on the 3.6 VR6 ?, i see oil gunk on the edge of the cylinder head cover and a very subtle idle change on my 2013 Passat. Thanks in advance, take care
Would a failing pcv cause smoke coming from the exhaust? Especially on start up. I just trying to diagnose my Jetta Gli right now. Old turbo blew up so I replaced jt with a is38. Trying to figure out if it’s the pcv or just a lot of oil that leaked into my charge pipes and intercooler when the turbo broke.
Hey, after a bit of advice. My 2.0 tsi had a bad misfire on idle & a leaky rear main seal, after viewing your video I suspected a faulty PCV valve, followed your advice to disconnect & block the pipe going to the intake manifold and hey, idle went back to normal! Here's my problem now, I replaced the PCV for a new one and nothing... Bad misfire was still there... Any further suggestions? Amazing video by the way!! 👍
good video I think I may have to change mines my car run great no signal lights are mis fires the only problem is my car burn alot of oil I have a 2012 vw eos tsi engine 84k it's like every 600 miles are so I had to add oil the round circle piece u had in your had I do see a lil moisture from there
So I have an 08 GTI 2.0 TSI CBFA. car was bought from an auction. Obviously the previous owner had done some things to it. It came in with a slew of codes and misfiring. I replaced the intake manifold and crankcase breather with a URO brand. Wasn't sure it would fix all the codes I was getting, but got to start somewhere. After repairs, the intake codes went away, but now I was getting a P2279 and still the P119A, along with misfire codes. I did all the adaption requirements. When you accelerate while driving, it does misfire with a flashing MIL. After a few times of clearing fault codes and rerunning, I consistently get the P119A and P2279. I inspected for intake leaks but found none. I decided to switch the crankcase breather again with the old one since I didn't get a P2279 before. that code would go away, but still get misfires and P119A. I monitored fuel trims while idling and of course they are high. I removed and blocked off the port between the pcv and intake and the trims would come back down. I smoke tested the intake and of course see smoke coming out of the rear main, along with a small oil leak. So obviously that needs replacing. My question is, have you ever seen an aftermarket breather not function properly? I typically try to use manufacturers parts, but I've had luck before in the past with using URO parts. Thanks
@@HumbleMechanicYes, that's what I was trying to narrow down. If there is actually a problem with the fuel pressure. I cant find a spec for fuel pressure, but the scan tool does show a pid for rail pressure and it says roughly 580psi at idle. would just hate to put a rear main in and it still does the same thing. At first I was going after a fuel concern because of the P119A. But after some research, found that usually that because of a lean condition.
Would you recommend a pcv block off plate to avoid all these wear and tear problems. I have an Audi a4 2008 and I have a block off plate but know I have some oil in the turbo pipe near the bottom of engine
I have a ‘13 GTI, I put on a Forge DV relocation kit awhile ago. I recently just got my car back from the dealership, long story short, can an aftermarket piece like this trip a check engine light?
I actually have a engine code for p0068-map/maf throttle position correlation and I change the map and maf sensor but still have it so I’m guessing the PCV valve is causing it as well because the OBD scanner says it could be a vacuum leak from the intake manifold
Had my PCV changed last year. Oil filler cap sucks down like crazy. Now getting P12A2 code and P0171 lean code. Could too much vacuum be created? I understand there is a crankcase pressure control valve, true?
I was looking into this PCV because my A6 is shaking like a diesel Rabbit at idle. I replace all coils a plugs but no change. Car has 120 k miles and no fault codes
Been fighting a cyl 2 misfire. Not the plugs or coils so am pretty much at the point of replacing my pcv. Slight whistle that stops when I cover the hole but it seems to be sucking air into the hole should it be blowing out if it’s failed?
Could P0299 code be related to the PCV too? I did notice a little oil around the valve not experiencing any power issues, I do hear a little faint whistle from time to time.
I have a VW mk7 2.0 clubsport 2016 with an engine light, the trouble code is P227000 lambda probe 2 cylinder row 1 signal too lean. what do you think? A bad labda probe Or A bad PCV Valve? thanks for your response!
Hey great video. I bought my 2011 gti 3 months ago. After a month I realized oil all over the bottom of my car. Rear main seal of course. I just had that replaced however they did not replace pcv valve and I am unsure if it was replaced prior to me buying it. I guess my main question is if this PCV is bad will it always throw a code? I had rear main seal replaced about 200 miles ago and have zero codes so far.
It may threw a code.. I may not I have seen both ways. If you pull the engine cover off, sometimes you can tell it's new, if its cleaner than the engine
I have had a reccuring p0171 on my passat b6 2.0 TFSI. Changed the PCV and break booster hose. Also changed sparkplugs and ignition coils, not because of this problem but because it was planned. Still having problems with p0171, now worse than ever before. The engine is reving up by itself when in idle.. Any good ideas would be appreciated!
Hey, Charles. Great video. I'm occasionally (rarely) getting P1297 - Connection charger-throttle valve Pressure drop and P0507 - Idle Control System RPM Higher than Expected error codes. Things I've done so far: -replaced diverter valve to the newer plunger style (the original one did not have any visible holes in the diaphragm) -replaced pcv valve to cam bridge gasket/o-ring (I was told by VW that it was leaking) -replaced pcv valve diaphragm with the RKX upgraded diaphragm (the original one did have a large hole in it) -resealed cam bridge, upper timing cover, and lower timing cover (updated timing chain tensioner installed in the process) -replaced front crank seal, upper timing cover cam actuator seal and internal o-ring When the pcv valve was removed, I inspected the orange spring-loaded valve for obvious damage or malfunction. It appeared to be free of any carbon buildup and the spring still felt pretty strong. However, I didn't have a brand new one to compare it to, so I was just guessing that it was functioning properly. In terms of troubleshooting, what would be next on your checklist of things to check?
Many thanks Humble mechanic ,i just subscribed . Any one know what would happen if you delete diagram ie (strip out) ect , vent to atmosphere , and cap off intake of pipe on turbo elbow ? But i think that would be an MOT fail here in the UK .

7 years after this video came out and it came in clutch. Easy diagnosis with this info and so glad it’s not my intake manifold gasket.
Dang PCV always causing trouble 😂😅

Thank you for the great video, it saved me some $
+Matthew Klueppel heck yeah!! So glad I be able to help
The Seafoam usually works on most anything it fixed my sprained ankle on a ski trip once...after that your only hope is JB WELD.
Hi
Did you solve the oil consumption problem?
I have one but think it’s failed it’s my brother in laws old build
Great guidance, thanks :-) My SEAT had a hunting idle, 'too lean' codes, and a wheezy air sound after engine off. The PCV looked a bit different, but I was able to carefully prise it apart, and voila a ripped diaphragm!
Got a "system lean at idle" code yesterday in my wife's 2013 tiguan. I suspected a vacuum leak. On inspection I took the engine cover off. I found that hole on the side of the PCV valve to be sucking in a bunch of air like you mentioned. I'll try the Diaphragm repair kit and see how it goes. Thanks!
yup that was it! easiest fix ever. Autozone had the $30 diaphragm kit in stock. easiest fix ive had in a while
Thanx for the video .
You are what a UA-camr should be. Thanks for your help.
It's possible make the engine run properly without the PCV or even the Valve Cover installed. You just need to Disconnect the MAF sensor and Start the engine.
Im here again my friend.
I been working on my 2007 2.0 T FSI
And everytime its a new code.since i did the valve replacment crazy but its truth
I dont know the reasons but im tired to spend a tons of time on this car .
The goods its you are there to show me posibles causes and how to fix the problem.
Tks my friend for this videos
Keep doing it .
Thank you so much for the video. It saved me from going after an O2 sensor and saved my wife a lot of money. The diaphram had a torn gasket. Luckily a local part store had the Dorman part for $30. Quick and easy fix along with cheap. Thanks a ton!!
+Jim Weck II sweet!!!!
Just bought an 07 eos w/105300 miles. Drove it a week and added 1 1/2 qts with 750 miles. Went to the dealer after google check. I think I'll just replace the pcv after watching your video. Thank you.
Thanks for the video but mine is VW Golf 5 TSi BWA engine and frequently cracking the oil separator. What could be the cause?
A great video ! Is it please possible to switch the pcv valve to a oil catch can?
Can you tell me about the pcv that is built in to the valve cover like on my non turbo 2.0 FSI engine code BLX. I have extreme high vacuum when engine is running and cannot remove the oil filler cap unless I turn engine off. I hear a whistling noise coming from rear main seal and a very small oil leak likely from rear main seal. Engine idles rough but drives well. Do I need to changed the valve cover to fix my issue?
Thanks for all your videos you make .
This video was great as its given me the confidence to tackle the PCV replacememnt myself. Perth Australia
Mine too! 😂 Not anymore
@Bonnor Bassidy mine doesn't either anymore...I traded for a vw golf wagon. Love it.
Good vid, thx😊 my 1.8 tfsi runs great,no probs. If i lift the oil filler cap thete,s a minor vacuum. Is this good? Engine keeps running nicely without the oil filler cap. Thx again, good channel you got here 🎉
Thank you Humble Mechanic! Helped today so much in fixing my PCV valve and thanks for including how to test it.
AWESOME!
@@HumbleMechanic Do you recommend a pcv delete on an fsi engine
Thanks . Clear explanation , i believe mine has falled . 2015 jetta 1.8t 42,000 miles . Small valve cover leak.
Nice sign from my Town into the background. Greetings from Wolfsburg =)
Just discovered that ours is failing on our 2010 CC. was going to have our mechanic do it but you're making me think I can do this.
+Andre Thompson It is a hand full of T30 torx and you have to remove the coils. no too bad. Be careful of the rear hose. It has a small nipple that likes to break.
+HumbleMechanic I'll let you know how it goes.
what causes the squeeling sound that seems to come from inside the timming chain covefr ?? my PCV diaphram is shot and am replacing it in the morning but that sound is no where near the bad part ... i thought it was the ideler bearing at first ... anywazz thanks your video solved my problem anyhow
Hello Charles (I hope I spelled it correctly). I hope you are doing well.
Is high vacuum in the crank case at idle normal?
Have the whistling noise, losing boost along with a slight misfire. Replaced the diverter valve recently.
I wish he would do a video on TSI/FSI GTI oil consumption issues. Its one of the most common issues with VW/Audi. Does everything but....
Thanks in advance!
thank you humble mechanic very much appreciated video. I actually want to transplant a vr6 engine in it do you have any tips?
+Michael Mendoza best tip is, get a donor car. It will cost you less in the long run.
I have 78,000 on it. manifold has gone every 20k so far. almost time now. going to scan it soon. see what codes I have. thanks for any input you can give me.
also...would I be able to drive it like this at all? at least to work tomorrow? 9 miles?
I generally HATE VW Products but if i had to work on it your DIY videos make it A LOT more tolerable. Good work, long live the beard !
Rock on!!! they are not too bad ones you get to know them.
I know this is an older video but I'd be eternally grateful for a response but is this the same for the 2.0t FSI engines
Amb1valent chaos Differnt design but works the same. Mine just shat the bed so gonna be changing it soon. Also in the process of cleaning carbon off of my intake valves!
2015 TSI, 110,000 miles. Runs great, but major oil leak at the oil filler cap.🤔
Good, Mr but I have my VW variant golf 2008 blg petrol engine makes howling noise how can I diagnose the noise from ,any basics please
Does pcv failure relate to cam-bridge valve cover leak? Would replacing the pcv slow the leak?
I had the same problem . I taken mine to a mechanic paid for a new PVC after getting the car back I was getting those 2 codes . When I went back to the mechanic they had heaps of excuses even used Snap-On scan tool and couldn't find the problem they also believed it had to do with my stage 1 tune . After year later of no boost/lag/bad idle and bad gear response/ I went and checked the hose that runs from behind pvc to the intake the hose was cracked. After some glue and self adhesive tape. Now my Golf Response/boost and doesn't have any issues .
Wow glad ya got her fixed
Just replaced mine! Idle feels so much better and low rpm’s a lot smoother.
Hi charles, can you make a video about the pcv revisi0ns. Does it need a ecm flash if you are changing from black top to white top pcv.
Good video I was wondering if it could cause a p0068 code many thanks
Good ideal is to give us all the part number too, that will be a plus and big help
This series has been a life saver, thank you!
Hi there , what signs exactly you had on your engine ? Please i really need a help, thank you :)
@@Espadazorz does changing this pcv can solve jerking when shifting gear?
@@kitsuvanphet8913 No, it doesn't. I've actually still neglected that issue. From what I've read online it's either because I'm low on transmission fluid, or one of the internal components in the transmission is cracked.
Great video; just had my rear main seal replaced and now I can't boost beyond 3psi, think the PCV could be the culprit? No lean, idle or misfire codes being thrown since the RMS job. Was boosting at 17ps before I took it in (dealer confirmed they did not touch ecu).
kraigmak721 That is odd. I would not think the PCV would fail during that repair. At that low of boost, you should have a fault of some type.
Thanks for the info. The link to Deutsche Auto Parts does not work.
Thanks helpful advice.
I trust you solely on your beard.

Will this create a vacuum when you pull the oil cap off and change the way it runs with the oil cap off?
Are there any work arounds for this like a catch can setup?
I changed my PCV couple years ago, now I am doing the RMS, since its leaking slowly. I don't need another PCV correct? I can use the PCV I installed in the past?
Hey Charles,
Hope your doing well, what about PCV fail symptoms on the 3.6 VR6 ?, i see oil gunk on the edge of the cylinder head cover and a very subtle idle change on my 2013 Passat.
Thanks for ur video ... do u think bad pcv valve will trigger engine code P12a2 on vw cc?
I doubt it. It’s a fuel pressure code. I’d start with that system
HumbleMechanic thank u
Hey, after a bit of advice. My 2.0 tsi had a bad misfire on idle & a leaky rear main seal, after viewing your video I suspected a faulty PCV valve, followed your advice to disconnect & block the pipe going to the intake manifold and hey, idle went back to normal! Here's my problem now, I replaced the PCV for a new one and nothing... Bad misfire was still there... Any further suggestions? Amazing video by the way!! 👍
Pre stige did your rear main stop leaking after you changed the pcv or did you gave to get it fixed? Also did you fix the pcv misfire issues
Can you do a video on a catch an installation for a VW 1.8tsi Passat
good video I think I may have to change mines my car run great no signal lights are mis fires the only problem is my car burn alot of oil I have a 2012 vw eos tsi engine 84k it's like every 600 miles are so I had to add oil the round circle piece u had in your had I do see a lil moisture from there
So I have an 08 GTI 2.0 TSI CBFA. car was bought from an auction. Thanks
yes I have seen them just be junk. But more times than that, the car has other issues like fuel pump failure, boost leak, wrong fuel filter, and so on
@@HumbleMechanicYes, that's what I was trying to narrow down. If there is actually a problem with the fuel pressure. I cant find a spec for fuel pressure, but the scan tool does show a pid for rail pressure and it says roughly 580psi at idle. would just hate to put a rear main in and it still does the same thing. At first I was going after a fuel concern because of the
P119A. But after some research, found that usually that because of a lean condition.
How can I get the PCV valve and where can I buy it from because I bought two from O'Reilly's and they still leaking on the top of my valve cover
Did you change black pcv to white one?
@@laurenciogalutan91 No, my PCV was replaced by OEM PCV.
I did notice a little oil around the valve not experiencing any power issues, I do hear a little faint whistle from time to time.
not usually
I have a VW mk7 2.0 clubsport 2016 with an engine light, the trouble code is P227000

A bad labda probe
Or
A bad PCV Valve?
thanks for your response!
Where is the PCV valve located on a 2014 TDI 2.0 ? Thanks for any info thank you so much
I have had a reccuring p0171 on my passat b6 2.0 TFSI.
Things I've done so far:
-replaced diverter valve to the newer plunger style (the original one did not have any visible holes in the diaphragm)
-replaced pcv valve to cam bridge gasket/o-ring (I was told by VW that it was leaking)
-replaced pcv valve diaphragm with the RKX upgraded diaphragm (the original one did have a large hole in it)
-resealed cam bridge, upper timing cover, and lower timing cover (updated timing chain tensioner installed in the process)
-replaced front crank seal, upper timing cover cam actuator seal and internal o-ring
When the pcv valve was removed, I inspected the orange spring-loaded valve for obvious damage or malfunction.
