The screw hook to closed eyelet trick totally works. Caveat is counter pull back force to prevent your wrists from being broken or hardware ruined-kinda not kidding. Been using that method for more than 10 years

Hey Jason, I love the shou sugi ban process, but you broke my heart by scorching that beautiful Sapele. I recently finished some mid-century modern slatted porch columns for our ranch house and the iridescence of the finished Sapele is stunning in the sunlight.
Half laps... Yeah! especially since the joints are completely open after he burned them🤣🤣. Its fun to watch all these hobby carpenters fuck up their own projects, cause they have seen the latest woodworking trends on YT. Fun and a nice project dont get me wrong here, but why the burning? Its the same thing as with all these slab and epoxy pours. Dont anyone have any ideas of their own?? Regards from a professional cabinet maker.

I live in one of the most remote corners of the world, 500 miles to the nearest town and 600 miles from the nearest city… so my access to timber is pretty limited, but am going to attempt this project over the weekend with scrap wood… may be a challenge!! 🤣🤣 thanks for the inspiration!

Love the swing, I am a wood worker and professional Carpenter and I worked for Callahan Furniture, in Cross Plains, Texas. We built our swings different than yours and we had cup holders, the top and bottom supports were cut at a 18 degree angle. The lap joints were cut on a Radial arm saw with a dad blades with all blades to make up 3/4" in width. And the eye bolts were only 3/4 " diameter. And your eye bolts are over kill, that's why your hook kept coming off. Love everything you build Jason and your channel rocks.
While I have enjoyed these for the better part of a year they just got more impressive as I have started my wood working journey. Good grief I can’t even measure correctly. Keep up the good work and I look forward to learning more from you.

Jason, love your videos. I’m recently retired and my wife and I will be building a new home next spring. I’m new to woodworking but plan a woodworking shop in the new home. My question is regarding the necessary electrical voltage I need for the shop. Keep in mind. I don’t plan on doing this for anything more than a hobby so it will need to be as elaborate as your shop. Thanks for the input and keep up the great videos.
Step 1 of this project is have a porch. I will continue the project once that step is done. Also, a couple drink holders on the arms would be ideal. Need a place for the bourbon or iced tea if it ever shows up.
For eye bolts I use a solid ratchet that fits and a long extension. Hold the extension and use the ratchet to spin it. Sometimes I get lucky and find a socket that fits on the outside the bolt lol
Sketch up has a compass tool that will provide angles, then you'd need a compass of your own, they make digital ones, they look like two rulers attached to a pivot point

I have been wood working and building since my grandfather and dad taught me as a little boy; glad I watched because I learned a new way to cut those odd angels on the miter saw first then go to tablesaw sled. You created a hello, beautiful swing, stores do not sell the quality we can create in our shops that is for sure. if I may ask one question or comment. Why didn't you use some springs between the eyebolts attached to the frieze beam and the chains? I think you will find they soften the swing/glide mechanics making the seating experience much more comfortable. I am impressed at the attention to detail; you take such care to make it so perfect. Also, I am glad to see I am not the only one who measures and calculates angels using what I call let's figure it out as we go method. My Grandad would say we are rushing and if you want something to look nice you gotta take your time. Honestly would say to him, the worst that can happen is you have to cut a new board and the mistake becomes something else. You damn kids are so wasteful, do you know what a board of wood cost during the depression? Well I will tell you, you couldn't get one you had to go cut down the tree. Did you ever get the ice tea? Maybe you should make your wife and ice tea and bring it to her after she helped ou with the hardest part. That thing looked hello heavy!!! Man, Jason, you make woodworking look so easy that it’s downright inspirational! Experience has taught me (if nothing else at all) that I can have all the video help, plans, and perfect ingredients and my soufflé STILL turns out like doughy pizza pockets… inevitably, Mr. Murphy pays me a visit at some point just to keep my ego in check. And it works, every time. Then, of course, my wife can’t figure out how I could be born with man parts and NOT be able to rebuild big block engines, rewire 220, and run my own gas line for the range she will never use… My response is always the same: not all man parts are created equal. There is a component called “aptitude” (sometimes known as talent) that isn’t always included in the original set. Otherwise, wouldn’t we all be Eddie Van Halen, Mike Rowe, Dale Earnhardt, Max Michel, and Jason Hibbs? Then what fun would the world be? Nobody would be obsessing over UA-cam channels trying to master stuff they will never come close to mastering… and that’s where the fun is for many of us. Keep on making great content, designing great projects, and reaching the army of ineptitude! We need this if only to prove to the other that we’re sincerely trying to upgrade our stock man parts. Shou Sugi Ban has been huge on my store. I've done a lot of tea light holders out of construction grade lumber and finished them this way and they have been one of my fastest selling items. People just love the look. I normally do a wax finish on top to pop the grain. Love the vid!
P.S I seen a guy use a ratchet with a deep well socket or an extension to drive an eye bolt. You put the handle through the hole and the socket becomes your handle. If the eye is small you can just put a large 6 point socket over it. (if you have them large enough)

one thing i would say is with how far out those eye bolts stick out that's going to apply a lot of torque and that wood might fail pretty quickly with that as it splits it, im not sure if you have another option to screw those in further at this point or not but could be an issue in the future.

Actually, the proper reading of the Japanese characters for that particular finishing technique is “yaki sugi”. The character for “cook” can be read “sho”, like you said, but in this case it’s just read as “yaki”. The same as “yaki-niku”, which means “cooked meat” (barbecue). The “sugi” part means “cedar”, and traditionally this technique was used to add extra protection to the wood (cedar) siding of traditional homes. “Ban” is just a suffix that means “board”. So in this case you’re doing a “Yaki-Sugi” finishing method. Pretty cool, by the way.
The heat of charring sets the wood resins, the same principle works for the ladies when they have their nails done and they get theirs set in the UV lamp.

Beginner question...I noticed you always seem to make two or three passes with your chop saw why is that? I love your video and they've really helped me so much as I get more and more into woodworking.
if I recall correctly when he answered this question in the past: its to avoid the blade pinching on the wood when the board "relaxes" from the relief made when cutting. if you imagine the board with a bow, and the high side being where you are making the cut, when you start to cut into the bow, the weight of the board wanting to sag will create inward pressure on your blade. its not a *huge* concern most times, but its a good practice to get into. it also helps reduce tear out a little bit

Nice work on the swing, and a nicely entertaining video. Those two bolts heads standing proud of seat rail at center front bother me, though - you may later wish you had countersunk them to avoid possible scrapes & bruises, and probable annoyance.

Great job as always. For installing the eye bolts, I've used a ratchet wrench with a long socket as a handle to just spin them in place. Works great.

Beautiful porch swing. You might have to remove the bottom back slat so that you can tie some seat cushions to the back easier.

Nice work on the swing, and a nicely entertaining video. Those two bolts heads standing proud of seat rail at center front bother me, though - you may later wish you had countersunk them to avoid possible scrapes & bruises, and probable annoyance.
