"I can't make one thing without a mistake!" God, this statement coming from you gives me so much validity. That one phrase has been uttered so many times throughout my projects, it basically lives rent free in my head.
Oh the humor is starting to sneak back in! That was my favorite part of this channel. You guys are funny without being wacky UA-cam guys about it. I love the interplay of David and Daniel and I've been missing it.
David, this is beautiful!!! Years ago, I made a Frank Lloyd Wright style bed out of oak, and it was a beast. One thing you might consider is placing a strip of felt on the bottom side of the slats where they rest on the inside of the bed frame, to minimize squeak and friction/wearing of the finish. With as much as I toss and turn, I made the change on my bed (used thin foam tape) and it worked, but felt is nicer.
I can relate to so much in this video. The bed looks great, with the tapered legs adding a subtle bit of visual interest. Can't wait to see what you do with the headboard. As for your back catalog having something for everybody, I must be everybody, because I've been enjoying the ride for a long time. Thanks for all of it.
It's nice to see that Kencraft is as good as they seem. I've only used them once when I ordered online but I requested highly figured wood and told them my intended use and the pieces they sent me were some of the straightest gorgeous boards I've ever had the pleasure of using.
I was about to ask about flipping the hardware when you answered that question in your video. I have never built a perfect project. I HAVE learned not to point out my errors to those who wouldn't notice. Nice build!
I’ve seen a lot of bed builds lately on UA-cam. And yours arguably is the best. I like how you share your feelings about being angry. Because we have all been there. I can’t remember a single project where there is some flaw that I have made. It’s what I think about when I look at the piece. But nobody else sees. Keep up the great work man! And thanks for all the videos.
SAND IN THE PLACE WHERE YOU LIVE! Welcome back to a welcome meme. As always, I'm loving your videos, and I still really love the changes you've made to your editing/filming process. These are feeling very calming and less phrenetic than some older videos (which I still love), while still feeling very "David." And on top of it all, a freaking BEAUTIFUL build. Thanks for all you do!
Fantastic bed frame. You addressed all of the issues that occurred to me while you made it. Laughed every time. Huge fan, long time watcher. Ordered your skull shirt. Cheers, man.
@@MakeSomething it’s really cool. Tell ‘m super respect from a non tattoo artist over here. They’ve got skills. Much like yourself. It’s funny because the walnut bed project is one that’s been on my list forever. Looking forward to your headboard vid drop.
The bed is really nice, great job! Looking at it put together and in the bedroom I am a bit surprised you didn't make it a floating bed because you did do the nightstands floating but it is beautiful so far. My wife's grandfather passed away almost a year ago and I was given some wood that he had, it's mostly walnut. I plan to build a few things from it to keep it in the family. My wife wants an L shaped desk, I'm not making it completely out of the walnut but I am still figuring out how I want to make it. I only have about 15 boards that are about 8 feet long and only about an inch thick so I need to really plan it all out. Anyway, can't wait to see the headboard, keep up the great work and stay safe 💯😁
Superb. Loving the passion builds. Just a thought- now you have drilled the top hole you could use it. Just elongate the slot to account for movement. Now it is better engineered AND there is no mistake, just a better design feature.
Beautiful bed! When I built my solid hickory bathroom vanity I broke over ten screws trying to add the bottom (the only part I was screwing together incase of water damage but obviously there are much better ways to add a bottom 🤦🏻♀️). Hickory is so dense, very difficult to tool but man is it gorgeous (the more character, knot holes, defects, grain striations the better) but that hickory broke off drill bits and screws galore. Use stainless steal only, use wax and go very slow!!!
Fifty five plus years ago and sleeping in a sagging double bed, I decided that two twin beds would be better than the abominable double. So I made two beds joined together and have slept peacefully ever since. I made them similar to this project but I wish the side rail hardware was available then. Mine use the surface mounted hardware. This one is much more elegant than mine. Great project, thanks for sharing.
Dave, I am really enjoying your new format. But, quite frankly, I also enjoyed your original style. Question: while drilling the lone hole through the board sides, could you not have drilled the forstner hole first then the smaller hole. Is there a benefit to using/building jigs for this?
I made a bed years ago. I didn't put in a central support. I made the slats (3/4 pine) into T sections by attaching a vertical strip to each slat about 1 inch deep. I works perfectly. It's withstood twenty five years of hard use with no issues.
Ive been watching since the basement workshop days. I really miss the humor/comedy that used to be in all your videos, that was the main reason I watched your videos.
He's trying to redefine himself and grow into what he always wanted to become. An artist who works with wood. That being said, I was thinking the exact same thing this morning. I find myself tempted away from the video by shorts because the humor isn't there. Also, shorts weren't at the bottom years ago to tempt me. And i think I've been reprogrammed a bit by the urge to scroll and binge.
I’m not sure what the template for the bolt countersink was for? Couldn’t you just do the countersink first? Other than that small thing, great video! 😃
Very nice looking bed! One comment: every bed build i see on YT uses those hanger connectors and .... They arent great at resisting horizontal forces, if you know what i mean. Vigorous, horizontal movement. I finally ended up making one with a substantial tenon AND a bolt, and that has been effective for three more kids.
Just a quick question. I noticed you score the pieces before you cut them fully. I have a 12" miter saw. Is it necessary to do that score with a bigger miter saw? Does it save on the blade or just make a cleaner cut? Love your content and the new format is really good!
man i dont even recognize that dude anymore. oh wait.. yes i do. i just watched that back catalog this year! Keep growin, keep making Art, and keep being awesome, sir!
I think the bed would look better if that center support that's under the bed was less noticeable. Maybe it's just the angle that this video was shot at, but seeing it really bothered me for some reason. I would suggest cutting it back a little, and making it come down at more of an angle so that it sits further under the bed.
I’m on my third read. The first two were the audio book and this time I’m highlighting and taking notes. This book has completely changed me on how I approach my work.
Nice one! What is your opinion on the hardware? Cause I bought a similar set and to me it just feels cheap and low quality... The bed Im building is not yet finished and Im having second thoughts on using that...
Good on you for the sponsor, David. As a therapist full time & weekend woodworker, i'm here for it. Also yeah, bed builds are so big. When i made my last one, i ended up having to relearn a lot of hand tool skills because i was beyond the capacity of most of my power tools.
Saw dust shooting back in the face is just a normal daily thing back at home since I was a child. I'm the only one who wears mask when using it because I got asthma. My dad and all his workers is not bothered by the saw dust.
I try my hardest to subscribe to Bob Ross’ “Happy little accidents” philosophy, but I have to admit that I’m also more of a “I can’t have one project without a mistake?🤬” kind of person too

Wax your drill bit with hardwood. Or better: when using a small size drill bit: use a column drill. This gives the drill bit more straight in the wood. I see with the screw you're putting in, it's sideways... That's almost asking for issues.
Beautiful work on making that bed David. Looking forward to that headboard build. Making mistakes is what makes us better woodworkers in the long run! No harm, no foul! 👍👍🔨🔨
Great build. I just have an eyesoar from that middle support. You should trim it down - imagine an curved line from edge going back some 50-60cm. Since it sits on the floor and its under legs it will have plenty of strength and not be visible
I commented on this elsewhere in this thread. Make the slats into T sections and a central support is unnecessary. I built a bed like this that has withstood 25 years of married life.

My all time favorite book of all time. I'm currently on my 3rd read.
This had a very old school UA-cam build vibe... turned out awesome.
Did you consider covering the walnut with pine veneer?

I see a future project for you, make an over the blade dust collector for your SAW Stop maybe you could sell it to them?
How did you get your festool miter saw to actually collect the dust? I have a 36mm hose attached and the dust goes everywhere.

The center rail board did not appear attached except by 3 screws to slats. Are you not afraid it might lean over?
Not at all. It’s crazy thick
That's a sturdy, beautiful bed! Honeymoon grade construction.
Don't beat yourself up on the hardware flip, I think we've all done that at some point. Excellent build, none the less!
And here I was, yelling at the TV, "David, dude, all you have to do is flip that piece instead of re-drilling those holes."
I don’t remember in previous videos you taping out the Festool name so the divorce was messy 😂
How satisfying was that edge band trimming!?!

Why do you still use Philips head screws? Have you ever tried square drive?
Man that looks really nice and yes I agree. That headboard is way too short
And if you read this . Please hurry up and do the headboard.
1:30 get the blade higher and more dust will go down rather that towards you.
