The Crosby Scandal : Behind the Tragedy
The Crosby Scandal : Behind the Tragedy
Chronicle of the Times Episode 139 | 1882
Historically, the Victorians had a reputation for prudishness and being straight-laced. This story shatters that image utterly with escapades that would possibly make our own times blush just a bit
The Golding family are a standard middle-class family with an excellent reputation living in a standard middle class borough. But all is not what it seems.
Mr Golding is having an open affair with the maid.
Mrs Golding, with the tacit consent of her husband, is having an affair with the considerably younger neighbour and things tick along nicely until…
Mrs Golding has become bored with the neighbour and seduces and begins an intimacy with the neighbour’s even younger brother who is only just 16 years old.
The maid has begun dating someone outside of the Golding family, leaving Mr Golding suddenly bereft. Both events place a considerable strain on the family relations.
Things would seem to come to a head when Mrs Golding finds herself pregnant. No one can ascertain who the father is.
This case utterly scandalised Victorian society at the time! We take a look at the background, the case and the denouement of the Crosby Scandal tragedy in today’s episode of Scandals of the Past
Hosted by Robin Coles.

This case is more like a "soap opera," than anything else the love affairs between neighbors and servants. I can't comprehend how Golding could have received four months no hard labor for his lover/servant Mary's death. Do you know what happened to the Golding's and the Ritson brothers? Great investigating, presenting, backstories, illustrations, photos and videos, as well. Take care 🦋
We know!! Well said! 👍OMG - we could not believe it when we were tracing the story! One can see why it was so very scandalous in its day!😮 The Goldings got back together! Poor children.... The ritson's wanted nothing at all more to do with Mrs G. Whether they were able to patch up their own relationship, we do not know...🤔
An intriguing and fascinating glimpse into the past. Lits of practical advice for everyday people. Thank you, thus was enormously enjoyable ❤
Oh thank you! 🙏We really enoy making these, but sadly they did not connect wth a large enouh audience to mnake them viable to keep. 😢Sad. We will be looking to bring them back in a few months if possible...🤞
OMG they were all scoundrels! Robin, you and the crew are getting really good at this. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that y'all don't use AI narration. There's one particular AI voice all over UA-cam now that gets on my last nerve. I don't know how all that works, but I can't imagine that there aren't more than one voice to choose from. If I hear that voice on a video I just click away. It's not so much about using an AI voice as it is everybody using the same one.
Thank you so much! We are def old school and have been called out on it more than once, but we ignore. 😉We also write our own material, and our own comments, and our own intros....We think there is value in some old fashioned ways...😁😉Thank you so very much for your kind comment and kind support of our "old fashioned" channel!🙌✨😁
It's not changed in suburbia, less guilt around though. I've some stories from eighties suburbia, that would get my account banned. Nobody had access to guns, thank The FSM.
Or servants.
👍Interesting! It was considered incredibly shocking in victriian times and generated much press as to: the moral values in today's society!😉
Thanks
Our very great pleasure!🙏😉
Wow if this was about the 1960s or 1970s but the Victorian era. The old queen would not be amused. I think that there's more to this case. I think that she was going out with a other man and that is what made him shoot her. If you take the wife and boys next door out of the story it puts everything in a different light. He was probably going to lose her. A other old story of if I can't have her no one else will. And only getting 4 months I'm shocked that there wasn't a big outcry. The Georgin and Victorian eras gave out worse for a starving child stilling a apple or potato. As for the story about the stranger in the girls dream if true it puts a new spin on "stranger danger " VERY CREEPY From across the big pond I wish you all the best. And as always I very much enjoyed your video thanks for all the work putting them out for us to enjoy. Take Care
Thank you - most kind!🙏Yes indeed - 4 months only is criminal! 👺We think that the "open" relationship was most likely his idea. Then, when he was losing the control, he lost it. 🧐 You can imagine the shock at the time! It would make good newspaper fodder today! 😲 oooooh - the second story...We are not sure how much stock we put into this one...it is all based on her own words really. There was a very keen interest in this subject during Victorian times - we think the story is very representative of the times!😉Thank you as always!🙏
BLIMEY!! It seems that Mr and Mrs Golding had a VERY "open" relationship!! Unfortunately, it all turned deadly in the end!! Poor Mary!! She didn't deserve her tragic ending!! Maybe she realized her relationship with Mr Golding was headed nowhere, and happily accepted Richardson's courtship!! It's SOOOOOO tragic she didn't get her happy ending!! This was EXCELLENT, Robin and team!! BRAVO!!❤👍🌟💞👏
Thank you - so glad you liked! 🙏 Poor Mary indeed!👍 We suspect she may not have had much choice with Mr G!🧐And mr G seems to have absolutely lost it when he was not controlling the situation. Wow - did he get off lightly....🤔
@ChronicleofTheTimes2024 Yeah, he got away TOO LIGHTLY, in my opinion!!😡😡
Thanks!
Wowwww! 🙌 Thank you! We so very much appreciate your very kind donation! 🙏That is most kind of you - thank you so very much! We clink our coffee mugs to your very good health!☕☕☕
Poor Mary. She didn't deserve to be murdered. Thank you for researching and sharing.😊
Thank you - glad you liked! 🙏 Wow - we think this would mnake some people blush even now!😉
Thank you. Great stories from history. William
Thank you - really glad you liked! 🙏
It's true Henry VIII married multiple times but he sought annulment from his first marriage, and then did an annulment without the pope, decided to go the execution route on the second, lost the third to birth complications, annulled the fourth, decided the fifth was easy to execute and was outlived by the sixth. Divorce based on infidelity didn't happen until Princess Margaret, who wasn't in line for the throne anymore. Then there was Princess Anne, Prince Charles, and Prince Andrew, although I don't know why Andrew and Sarah bothered, they still live together. There are various divorces among the Dukes and Earls in the 20th Century.
👍Very true - and we cover several of them week by week!😉

Thank you - glad you liked! 🙏We think that someimes it is the smaller stories that tell so much about what life was like way back when.😏
As always I very much enjoyed your video. I was struck by some of the storys and could not help but think "the more things change the more they stay the same " there's always been people who will step up and help those who are less fortunate and there's always been poor people who really appreciate a kindness showed them we sometimes forget that. R.C. and team l thank you for all your hard work this year putting out these videos for us to enjoy. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas and a great 2025. Take Care

I enjoyed this case about Lady Diana Spencer and her "despicable" first husband and their divorce scandal. Its interesting that when she married her lover how the relationship went from a fairytale to a nightmare, literally. Do you know if Lady Diana was able to have custody of her children by her first marriage after her divorce? Great investigation, presentation, backstory, illustrations and videos, too. In regards to your further particulars some people will go all around the world and back for financial gains. Happy Holidays to "News of the Times," team and a joyous New Year 2025. Take care 🦋
oooooh - that is a great question! 👍 We believe no. And what is worse, of course, is that he was the nasty one and she was the one punished! Her reputation, with at least some of the aristocracy at the time, was in absolute tatters. Sad. 😔As for the children, at least one of them was a leading member in the Hell Fire club, which we covered before. They did all the very worst excesses, just truly a life of utter dissipation with alcohol and women! They were a nasty lot and she would have seen this for herself - a copy of her horrible first husband now in her son. 🤔 At the death of her second husband, friends of Lady Di rejoiced as she would at last have some peace. It is a real commentary that she had to paint (although she loved to paint) to supplement her income. Near the end of her life, she was known to be living in reduced circumstances which is hard to imagine coming from the very wealthy Spencer family.🤔
I believe Diana, Princess of Wales was named after Lady Diana Spencer!! Their lives certainly had some similarities!! This was a VERY INTRIGUING story, Robin and team!! Thanks for sharing!! ❤🌟👏💞👍
The famous Spencer family, like many a noble family, are known to pass down names from their ancestors. We thought it was interesting the many similarities between the two! Given the history, really, would one want to take a chance with that name again?🤔Hope you are doing well Nadia! Sending our warmest wishes your way!🙌🎄❄️🧑🎄

As always I very much enjoyed your video. Story 1 Cleary there was no winners in this case. However one thing included in the transcript was that Lady Diana at one time after leaving her (sorry case of a husband) at Berkeley Square l can't help but wonder if it was #50 Berkeley Square 👻👻👹👻👿 Case 2 l liked how it said in the newspaper that he had a "dead and quite wife "😉😆😮 R.C. and team l thank you all for all your hard work putting out these videos for us to enjoy. Wishing you all a happy Christmas and a great 2025. Take Care
Top of the morning!🎩It very well could be the address you mention. 👍 The Georgian English is awkward, we know, so details were cut out to try to keep it less unweildy.😏The further particulars case - glad you liked! Thank you for sharing the Bolingbroke story. I enjoyed it very much.
Thank you - so very glad you enjoyed! 🙏It is so interesting to us, the similarities between the two across time...🤔
I don’t know how I missed this 8 months ago ! I’m wrapping Christmas gifts right now, listening in rapture, but pausing after the Duck Song to tell you that this is a treasure. My parents read this to us many decades ago. I read it to my daughter when she was 6 or 8, and have read it a couple of times as an adult, most recently last year. The story is enchanting, but, dear Robin, your voice as the voices of the many animals, puts me in a trance. It’s comforting, thrilling, and totally just right. Thank you.
Gosh - how very kind! 😁 We started this a long time ago for the grandchildren with covid. Retrospectively, our sound quality was terrible as were our technical skills, so we know the quality is lacking. We were just learning. Wind in the Willows reminds us here of all that is good in the world! There is much delight as well when, by chance, we meet someon who is "just like mole"😏Thank you for your very kind comment and kind support! Wishing you and your a healthy happy holiday season and 2025 to come!😁🙏🧑🎄❄️🎄
I love Chronicles of the Times for the perspective it gives us on the foibles of humans. It’s comforting to learn we are not the originators in 2024 of all the mischief going on today !
👍"The mischief going on" - well said! We really enjoyed doing the Vintage series, but it just never became popular although we think we gave it a good go. Sadly, the Vintage series will be parked for now. Thank you so very much for your kind comment and kind support!🙏
