Awesome, dude. Always glad to see a Glenn Plant video creep into my feed. :) I played the crap out of Starcraft on PC anytime I'd visit my friends house, but I don't think I ever played it on N64 - maybe rented, don't recall honestly. Same with C&C 64. Who even knows, the late 90s/early 2k's are now all just a blur. Ha! Until next time~
Ha well you should defo check them both out if you’ve forgotten - a little bit easier to pick up and play compared to the pc ports but then again StarCraft has a remaster that’s free so much cheaper to get!
Always a pleasure to see a new upload. Never played this game myself, thought about trying it out but RTS games usually demand a lot of time which I don't have much of these days.

My friend and I always played teams on the Hunters map, resetting until we were next to each other in the bottom left bases that could wall for a shared choke point against a full set of Protoss NPCs. He liked his battle cruisers and I liked my nukes
Remember wanting this game back in late 90s even asked my local Game store about it and i remember the guy just having this comfused look said sure not talking about the pc game he had no idea there was a n64 version. But it never got released here in the UK. By the 00s rolled over I ended up getting a pc and this was my first game on it.
haha yeah I remember some game store workers like that, there wasn't many back then as it was still more niche than it is today. most game store staff are like that these days and yet they wonder why brick and mortar is dead
"Never judge a book by it's cover" the fact that the n64 can run starcraft is amazing givin the limitations of the system which gave the system its charm and you dont have to worry about the cartridge breaking unlike a disk which is prone to scratches.
I played Starcraft 64 when I rented it from Blockbuster Video in late 2000. I didn't become a fan of the series until 2008 when I started playing Starcraft on PC. Having played Starcraft on PC, I had more of an appreciation of the series. It wasn't until 2022 that I gave Starcraft 64 another try when I saw it at my local retro video game store for less than $100. Personally, I think it is one of (if not) the greatest N64 games out there. The thing that gets me is how much they actually crammed into Starcraft 64 rather than focusing on what they didn't, because I know for a fact that the N64 had so many limitations. I do think Starcraft 64 deserves a modern release. I also believe that Starcraft itself as well as Starcraft 2 should get a console release (even if it is next gen consoles). They've done it for Diablo, why not Starcraft (and maybe even Warcraft).
Well despite the development issies. SC64 got me hooked on strategy. Which brought in a returning customer. Since I rented this at Block Buster I have bought this on N64 and PC (twice CD key + digital) the new remaster, and all 3 SC2 campaigns. I'm sure I'm not the only one this happened to.
Yes, you absolutely nailed it by mentioning Nighdive at the end. I would love to see SC port by them! I doubt anyone (even Blizzard themselves, looking on Arcade Collection) could do better. I think I’ve never ever believed and trusted anyone more than them. This team knows how to properly remaster and adapt for a gamepad older games with all their glory. I just hope trashmasters from Aspyr dont get their hands on this masterpiece. Actually, every old game should be remastered by Nightdive and Nightdive only! But realistically it is not possible, so at least let them cook the best and most iconic of them.
Still hurts that this got a limited pal release and ogre tactics didn't get pal release at all. Did later on manage to buy both 🎉🎉 Great video as always
I loved playing this game so much even though I've always been bad at RTS games, I'm more decent nowadays so after many years I finally got to see the whole campaign including Broodwar and I loved every second of it. I always user to see the Zerg as this absolute evil in the universe but after playing it for real they managed to make understand they were victims like everyone else. The Overmind and Zerg were always my favorite race, and now they're so even more.
Great review Glenn, i have never played this game but it was always a curiosity, from your review it seems like the kind of game I would like too, thanks!
This is a neat version of the game and even with compromises is a fun once-through. The way the N64 handled the visuals is really cool. I like how it looks. I also like the C buttons for the alternate actions.
@n64glennplant The N64 was great at 2D which was sadly underutilized. Ogre Battle 64 is a favorite. Also n64glennplant replied to me! Today was a good day!
Forgot to talk or atleast mention the most interesting part of this version: the split-screen multiplayer. I have tried it using Everdrive, but would have been interesting to know more about the feature.
Owned it, loved it, and played the freaking heck out of it. Zerg vs. Terran epic battles with my brother, and we still have stories about it that we recall.
I played this game on N64 before PC. I remember playing split screen 1v1 with kids from my street. We'd always play that River Styx level... 'no rush 20 mins' or so. We'd spend the build up to the eventual fight just laughing and having fun and then when things kicked off, whoever realized they were going to lose, would typically get up and leave the room 'rage quit' style lolol😂 Then I remember my first time playing on PC and realizing "omg... the N64 version looks like straight up mud" haha
@@n64glennplant Yup, my very first 1v1 on that "Challenger" map. I was Zerg, they were Terran. They built a proxy bunker next to my home base in the fog where I couldnt see. I lost my little mind when I found out what they'd did lol
Grew up in a Nintendo household. No PC, at least not one that could really be used for gaming. Older brother (by several years) sort of was the one who'd make decisions on what to beg parents to buy. SC64 was among these executive decisions, following C&C64 a while before that. Suffice to say, these were my first experiences with RTSs, and with nothing to compare it to, got lots of mileage out of them while sparking my interest in the genre. It also probably had a large part to play in me getting really deep into turtling/fortification in RTSs, as one of my pastimes was going into skirmish mode, usually on I forget the name of the map, the really close-quarters space station tileset one with bases at the four corners with black void "moats". I'd literally run that map for hours, basically just finding a kid's joy in watching the AI attack waves crash upon my carefully constructed frontlines, basically til the resources all ran out and the AI couldn't even send anything anymore. Then I'd take my squad of 18 carriers or 18 battlecruiser or - well, I didn't really like playing zerg very much tbh - and go steamroll everyone. Repetitive AF in retrospect but it was fun as a youngun.
not far off now, I actually have a huge amount of video projects half complete but health makes it problematic to finish off many of them but ill keep trying and pushing through as I love talking to people about our memories etc
Unfortunately I paid too much attention to the middling reviews for this game back in the day and did not purchase it. I really wish I had, because it looks fantastic! Seeing it in action on video shows it off far better than simple screenshots did.
When this game came out, not many people in my town had a PC. We used to go to the library to use computers and they had internet. We weren't allowed to play games but we could use the internet. I was looking forward for the release of SC64 because I saw it in a PC magazine and they were going on about how amazing it was. Getting a PC at the time was not happening. No chance my parents would purchase something so expensive. (I was 17 and work was hard to come by in my small town). SC64 was awesome! My friends would come down and we would take turns beating missions. We didn't care about limitations because for all of us, getting a computer wasn't happening and we made due with what we got. I hear people downplay SC64 these days because its technically inferior to the PC game but they fail to understand that when this SC64 was released, PC's were inaccessible to most.
This game aged really well. Its a familiar set of toys to play with, like we all know what the starcraft units do. But playing them on pc isnt that fun anymore its like what am i gonna do ? Blow thru the campaigns? Im not getting online. But the n64 makes the game fun af cuz the controller is a challenge and its on the tv. And the 2 player coop is exhilarating. Me and roommate would do it at the end of the night and crush beers while going at the computer. We got good enough to win 2v3 but I don't think we ever could handle 2v4. Gameplay on the controller is really challenging but doable. You can learn how to micro tanks, and how to get the templars doing their storms. But the zerg was just too difficult for me to build with. You gotta slap the r button like crazy every time to find a good drone. Butttt if you went pure zerglings like zero hydras you just build to upgrade the lings and ur terran teammate throws you some medics. You can bumrush and win a 2v2 that way
@n64glennplant there's one on ebay atm for £470! Years back they were about £200 and I couldn't bring myself to pay that much then so unless I find one randomly, I doubt I'll ever bother. I snagged Snowboard Kids 2 for £50 about 4 years back though, which was a steal.

Great video review! I had recently completed the game myself and while I had some issues along the way, the fact the port exists at all is so cool
What playtime do you think you put into it?
@@n64glennplant I think easily 70+ hours if you include failed missions
Did you unlock all cheats and play the secret mission?
@@toycoma98 Yeah I did it was fun for what it was
First time on this channel and i love seeing it has a community around it with its own "lore"
Imo it's one of the most redeeming features of YT to foster such. Seems good so far!
in addition to that we have such a lovely community here which has been nurtured for over a decade. its funny that sometimes people come back and they're like damn I remember watching you when I was a kid in high school and now I'm old with a job, kids and a huge ass mortgage to pay haha
this was the best co-op game on the N64 we had no internet growing up on my street this was how me and my friends played 1v1 in starcraft
I loved coop with my brother, fun times on n64
I’ll watch this later. Just wanted to say it’s good to see you’re still uploading!
thanks hector hope you're having a good week
Really glad to have you back, Glenn 😃 You've been missed
Thanks man that’s appreciated, doing what I can in the limitations I have
It's always a good day when Glenn uploads to UA-cam. Another great video!
thanks, despite the hardships of life I have a unique ability and position here of being able to unify people through a common love of something special to all of us. I feel entrusted with that position
@@n64glennplant Indeed! I've been watching your videos for years, there is no doubt you've solidified your position.
Starcraft never pushed any technical boundaries and was not difficult to run for the era on PC. Good review.
Depends how you played, there were some expansion fan patches which greatly pushed the visual aspect with upgrades but if I remember correctly they would never let you use it when playing online
New subscriber here and loving the content! ❤
Welcome, you picked a good time to subscribe as he just got back from a hiatus!
ah man, as nice as it is to see people stick around during my illness its even nicer to see new people who've just come across my archive of videos. thanks for being a sub you all mean a lot especially with sharing comments etc
@@n64glennplant anytime! I’ve been an n64 fan and collector for ages and it’s great to find such an awesome channel. The care and dedication you’ve put into these videos is great, keep it up!
Used to rent this a lot at blockbuster
Great title
I'm actually in England right now so it's funny that I got a push notification for this! I figured it was because of that not actually a new video! Great adaptation!
haha which part!?
@@n64glennplant right now we are in Twickenham visiting my girlfriends family. Then heading to York and then Edinburgh for a bit! From Ohio, USA
Thank you for your uploading,i was missing it a lot&glad there was a new one coming🤩🤩Stay sharp&have a lazy sunday!
Thank you! You too!
An 8/10 game. I liked playing, but would have loved N64 mouse support, and the slowdown is a problem. The gameplay is still class. However, I just prefer C&C that little bit more for my own nostalgia reasons.
yeah c and c is still fire on n64 too isn't it
Awesome, dude.
@@n64glennplant Yeah I have both C&C Remaster and SC Remaster on PC lol. :)
I grew up on SC64, if I didn't I probably wouldn't be playing SC2 today
Which do you prefer?
@@n64glennplant I play SC2 ladder, this my second season and I'm top 5 for Gold 2 currently 😊
Always a pleasure to see a new upload. Never played this game myself, thought about trying it out but RTS games usually demand a lot of time which I don't have much of these days.
I know what you mean, I downloaded the AOE remaster when it came out and have barely played 10 minutes of it to just look at the clean crisp menus etc
Two of my favorite things in one. Brood war is still incredibly popular in Korea
Yeah rts games in Korea seem super popular
I wish Glenn would do his top 25 N64 games!
Maybe one day but that would be a tough call!
I love this game, still play it today on my Retroid Pocket 3+ handheld, if i want hours to pass I play this. 3rd time replaying entire game. Unlocked all cheats and played the secret mission. Here are tips to have better experience:
Hold Z to lock cursor to move the screen. Z+L to hide map. Z+R advanced build menu. 7:20 Press R to cycle through units on screen. Hold L, press dpad to assign map location then press dpad. R+C button assigns goup, Z+C button selects group, press again to snap to location of group, can assign 18 units per group. Use "hold" to keep unit in place, will attack in range but not chase enemy, some units dont attack though so be cautious and experiment. "move" will move without attacking until reaching the point selected. "B (attack)" will move unit to point selected but will attack anything in range. More than one SCV will repair faster. Increase game speed on the game settings menu.
great tips!
tons of childhood memories playing this in the dark on multiplayer
because you wanted to be in the dark or couldn't afford electricity? one answer is more worrying and saddening than the other
@@n64glennplant hahaha n64 multiplayer gaming at night
My friend and I always played teams on the Hunters map, resetting until we were next to each other in the bottom left bases that could wall for a shared choke point against a full set of Protoss NPCs. He liked his battle cruisers and I liked my nukes
Hunters is a classic map for sure!
@@n64glennplant very true and Game now is just a shell of it former self.
64 was my introduction to starcraft. Instantly hooked
still play to this day?
Amazing port and one of my favourite N64 games. Brilliant
glad you enjoyed it!
"Never judge a book by it's cover" the fact that the n64 can run starcraft is amazing givin the limitations of the system which gave the system its charm and you dont have to worry about the cartridge breaking unlike a disk which is prone to scratches.
that's what I told my wife when we first met and here we are 14 years later haha
This Glenn Man, made my friday :D
thanks farmer! love seeing youre here
@@n64glennplant Will be always here, whenever you drop a new video😃
Heyy I’ve been waiting for this video! So awesome!
thanks Sean I feel your positivity radiating worldwide
Glad to see a new video uploaded, welcome back friend.
Hey, thanks! Always nice seeing old faces still here
I played Starcraft 64 when I rented it from Blockbuster Video in late 2000.
And don’t forget they even crammed in brood war on this too so weren’t even just trying to get the base game on the console
It’s crazy how many times I’ve paid for the same game on multiple releases over the years too!
Prodigal son returns. Welcome back Glenn. Great to see you again.
thanks Chris I appreciate the positivity - hope life is well for you
Yes, you absolutely nailed it by mentioning Nighdive at the end.
Big fan of nightdive - just a shame their work on blade runner wasn’t that great as it’s one of my all time fav games
Always love a Glenn video! Keep it up they make me dust off my 64
Thank you that’s kind of you 👍
Still hurts that this got a limited pal release and ogre tactics didn't get pal release at all. Did later on manage to buy both 🎉🎉 Great video as always
You and me both!
Glenn, I love your videos, you're roughly the same age as me and I love hearing your perspective.
were just old gits now who reminisce over a simpler era right :)
The Overmind and Zerg were always my favorite race, and now they're so even more.
who's your fav character? I'm an old school Jim fan myself
@@n64glennplant Jim is definitely up there, but I gotta stay with Either Tassadar, Zeratul or the Overmind.
Great review Glenn, i have never played this game but it was always a curiosity, from your review it seems like the kind of game I would like too, thanks!
let me know how you like it if you try it
He's back ❤
hope you're well mate, message me when you want that cable
Good video!
SC64 was my first time playing the game. The multiplayer was fun!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is a neat version of the game and even with compromises is a fun once-through. The way the N64 handled the visuals is really cool. I like how it looks. I also like the C buttons for the alternate actions.
yeah and lets be honest its just nice seeing so much sprite work on the console after so much 3d
@n64glennplant The N64 was great at 2D which was sadly underutilized. Ogre Battle 64 is a favorite. Also n64glennplant replied to me! Today was a good day!
One of my favorite N64 games. First class. Would love it if Nintendo adds it to the Switch online service
lets hope one day
@@n64glennplant and if it gets 8 player online multiplayer even better
Forgot to talk or atleast mention the most interesting part of this version: the split-screen multiplayer. I have tried it using Everdrive, but would have been interesting to know more about the feature.
I would need to have friends to properly show that off, as a rule though I think now if you want multiplayer just do the pc version online
Been looking forward to this one
sorry to have kept you waiting
The music in Starcraft was my favorite part. No way i would turn that down!
as a general rule I like having crunchy effects over music in these types of games but the music is good enough to listen to as a soundtrack
I love the music too, I max it out
Owned it, loved it, and played the freaking heck out of it. Zerg vs. Terran epic battles with my brother, and we still have stories about it that we recall.
im a Terran guy myself always
I played this game on N64 before PC. I remember playing split screen 1v1 with kids from my street. We'd always play that River Styx level... 'no rush 20 mins' or so. We'd spend the build up to the eventual fight just laughing and having fun and then when things kicked off, whoever realized they were going to lose, would typically get up and leave the room 'rage quit' style lolol😂 Then I remember my first time playing on PC and realizing "omg... the N64 version looks like straight up mud" haha
haha yeah and don't forget your first experience playing it online that was mind-blowing until you got battered by someone on the Asia server!
@@n64glennplant Yup, my very first 1v1 on that "Challenger" map. I was Zerg, they were Terran. They built a proxy bunker next to my home base in the fog where I couldnt see. I lost my little mind when I found out what they'd did lol
I love this port. Recently beat it completely. Had to be very patient.
Yeah it requires as much 😁
Did you unlock all cheats and play secret mission?
Repetitive AF in retrospect but it was fun as a youngun.
but man command and conquer and this on n64 are some great introductions
This is the last N64 I got, it was a about a year ago.
I just played the first part since I was busy, so hope fully I will get back to it.
its worth playing but man its a time sapper for sure
Oh my god it‘s Glenn! ❤ And talking about the most badass port the N64 ever got 😵😵😵
zoy thank you for watching, your positivity brings happiness into the world
I hope Glenn eventually unlocks the achievement of reviewing every game in the N64 library
not far off now, I actually have a huge amount of video projects half complete but health makes it problematic to finish off many of them but ill keep trying and pushing through as I love talking to people about our memories etc
Growing up, this was actually the first game I bought for myself with my own money that I earned, so it will always hold a special place for me.
that first game purchase with your own money will always be special right
Freaking LOVED this game when I was a kid, don't remember any frame droppings though.
They made select all before F2 existed in PC broodwar!
good ole F2 hey~!
Unfortunately I paid too much attention to the middling reviews for this game back in the day and did not purchase it.
I really wish I had, because it looks fantastic!
Seeing it in action on video shows it off far better than simple screenshots did.
yeah screenshots were always ropey given how they were often captured
I hear people downplay SC64 these days because its technically inferior to the PC game but they fail to understand that when this SC64 was released, PC's were inaccessible to most.
wonderful! that's kinda the point I made in the video, at that time pc in the home was still a huge luxury for many people but consoles were abundant!
Supports my idea of the N64 secretly being a supercomputer all along. If only the N64 mouse was actually used in these games.
I heard it can even play doom 😃
Loved the review! I still need the box and manual for my copy.
that'll cost you a ton no doubt
Glad you're back Glenn!
thanks eleven that means a lot
Omg im so happy you're back!
thank you, missed you all
This game aged really well.
You can bumrush and win a 2v2 that way
Lovely insight right here, the controls for sure do take some getting used to but not because they’re bad but because it’s just very different
I wonderful to see another video from you Glenn 🙏
thank you that means a lot
I don't remember the frame rate getting too bad and we played 2 player a lot.
It depends how big you build your unit sizes
Hooray he's back! This is the last cartridge I need for a full PAL N64 set... never gonna happen lol.
how much is loose these days? I remember it being a few hundred even years ago now
@n64glennplant there's one on ebay atm for £470! Years back they were about £200 and I couldn't bring myself to pay that much then so unless I find one randomly, I doubt I'll ever bother. I snagged Snowboard Kids 2 for £50 about 4 years back though, which was a steal.
Hurrah for another Glenn Plant vid!!
love that warmth fella
Another great video!! Cheers!
Thank you! Cheers!
N64 goat your videos are highly valued by a gamer
I really appreciate that mate!
