Starcraft is so interesting. Bit of background, Blizzard was trying to get a licence to produce a Warhammer 40k RTS game from GamesWorkshop and wasn't able to work out a deal. So, instead of scrapping the project entirely, they retooled all the game assets they already had, renamed everything and BOOM, Starcraft was born.

Don't play it on N64. Might be ok to play on emulator, haven't tried to see if they allowed more ram usage but N64 was limited to 8mb ram with expansion pack. It was an awful experience once you got a lot of shit on the map on console :(

Had this on PC, like most normies, but I was always aware of the N64 port. Even at the time I looked at the concept of cramming it into the N64 cart and thought "nah, can't be done." Honestly, looks pretty impressive. Really glad to see you grind through it all and actually get some enjoyment out of both story and skill progression.
Yeah it's a shame console was just abandoned with RTS games for so many years, I always wanted to get in to them but never had a good PC. Eventually I got one that was good enough to play C&C3 and it was a blast. Not that I ever got good at it mind. Just recently played Stellaris on PS5 and it was great, sure a console edition of games like this are always going to be inferior in some ways but...that's basically always the case anyway, so long as it's still a fun game who cares?
@@mrcheesemunch Microsoft seemed to be the only one sticking with it for the most part, between Halo Wars, the AoE remasters and Kane's Wrath most of the console RTS games were limited to the XBox.
I guess some RTS is better than none, but the genre was much better on Playstation. I couldn't play C&C on N64 after I had played it on PSX. Downgrading from PC to PSX didn't feel like that much of a leap though. C&C without FMVs is severely lacking soul, I might add.

Finally finished this long video of Starcraft 64. It's nice to see a more comprehensive breakdown of what starcraft 64 is, rather than the usual videos on it that are like 7 minutes long. I grew up with this version when my family didn't have a very good pc and I didn't know that starcraft 1 existed on the pc, even after Starcraft 2 was announced. It took me like 2012 to realize there was one on the pc and at 2016, I got the game when a friend had it on his usb so he put it on a school computer for everyone at high school to download on their usbs' and also play Starcraft on all the pcs, usually playing 3v3's against each other. With me and my brother only having Starcraft 64 for 2009 up to 2016, it was a good time, especially playing free for all with me against him, against two other computers or teaming up in a 2v2 against two computers. It's also quite cute how you perceive things would work with your first experience with the game. Like thinking that firebats explodes hurt your own units or thinking that all zerg attacks were a zerg rush lmao. Thanks for making this one. I was waiting on you to cover this game with it being a massive childhood game of mine. Me and my little brother loved this game. I still play Starcraft 1 & 2 on the pc to this day while my little brother did play some starcraft 1 and 2 on the pc a bit but moved on to other stuff like mobas and other games.
Ngl, I was considering skipping to the end for this one because it was so long, but you hit me in the nostalgia so hard that I not only watched the whole thing, but I also re-installed Starcraft on my new PC and I'm going to start playing it again for the first time in like 20 years. P.S. - I rented the N64 one from my local video store as a kid. Big mistake. I was never going to finish it in 3 days!
I've had a hard time playing my old PC games on my new system. How do you go about that? I'd like to play Midtown Madness, which was on Windows 98, on my Windows 11 machine.
Whew, that video was bananas! I've watched a bit of competitive SC2 over the years but had never known any of the story so it was cool to hear the origins of many things referenced in maps or by casters.
This cartridge is the pride and joy of my N64 collection. I am not a completionist, I only want my nostalgic games and this was a hard find in rural Canada.
Bought this for my brother in like 2000 from a sears that was slowly clearancing out video gemes. Picked it up when it went from 70$ to 50$. Wasnt our first go with starcraft but he loved being able to play it on console. He still has it, might be worth money
This was the first RTS I ever played. I had no idea how popular it would become on PC or how amazing of a campaign it would have. Me and my childhood friend would play it every time he came over to hang out. Sure the graphics and frame rate were awful but we were just used to it at the time.
I'll never forget how mad I was when I had the strategy guide for this (the N64 version) and it mentioned a "Custom Level Editor". I scoured every inch of this games menus trying to find it, only to later learn that only the PC version had that.
The things you can do in the custom level editors in both SC1 and SC2 are insane! People have made whole high quality original campaigns with new units, mission objectives and mechanics.
It took me playing SC on pc after playing it on N64 to realize firebats wrecked zerglings not from dying but from the flamethrower hitting 3 times across it's animation which is what wrecked zerglings/zealots.
I could be on my phone and suddenly hear "I am beating every N64 game, and I mean everyone." and be like "Oh word, I'll watch." This channel is always good when you're bored.
I've been waiting for this video for a long time and it doesn't disappoint. Great job beating this game, Thab. I can't imagine how tough it must've been playing on the N64 controller. I remember being genuinely scared of the Zerg as a kid when I first watched my older brother play it on PC. At the time, I really felt the game did a great job of portraying the Terrans' initial state of confusion over this new, deadly, alien threat. The fog of war held true terror, let me tell you.
Really amazing production. The editing and the pace is really sweet. It did not feel like a 2 hours youtube video, but like chilling with a friend on a couch. Fantastic job !!!
I've been playing SC2 since it came out, and I had zero idea there was a 64 version of the original. I'm absolutely stoked to see Thab become a starcraft pro.
Thanks for the video! One thing that drove me crazy as a SC player since 1998…. A “Zerg rush” doesn’t mean anytime a Zerg attacks you with a bunch of units it’s a “Zerg rush”. A “Zerg rush” means in multiplayer where you play other humans, and typically 1v1, the zerg can build units (zerglings) very fast and try to rush as fast as they can. It’s considered “cheese” because their economy is so bad that if they don’t succeed they are dead. It also doesn’t take much skill. In early SC days like 1998, it was much more deadly, however the meta of the game now makes the probability of a Zerg rush succeeding low. You kept saying over and over it drove me crazy lol. I mean you called a lot of things wrong, but that’s okay because you admit you never played before. For some reason the zerg rush thing urked me :)
@ashnodmtg From what I remember, Turok and the sequels take a bit to beat, but what is really a challenge is Super Robot Wars from JP. Around the same length as Starcraft.
Finally, Ucchan Nanchan no Hono no Challenge: Denryu Ira Ira Bo was chosen! That’s my favorite game! Seriously, I love that even showing the cover I have absolutely no idea what that is.
WOw, I can't believe that you actually beat the whole game on an N64! This was a fun watch. And good job on your editor, too, for breaking this down so much.
Amazed you had the fortitude to beat this. The controls on the 64 for this were abyssmal and the frame rate dropping to 2 when big engagements happen made some of the later missions virtually impossible.
I was looking forward to you getting to this one, having played the PC version myself for many years (and still do), its painful. Experts can pick apart what you did but to hell with them, this is a unique experience of a long established game that as far as I'm concerned, no one can do anything wrong. An RTS with that monstrosity of an N64 controller is no easy task, and its impressive anyone could get through that ENTIRE slog.
I physically winced when Brood War was referred to as a "DLC" In all seriousness though you're a champion for managing this, good luck finishing all the N64 games
This video brings me so much joy, even if I want to scream at my screen every time he uses "zerg rush" wrong. As a long time awful starcraft player and enormous fan, I'm enjoying every second of this.
I used to play it on the N64. Never got even close to beating the game. Got stuck on a mission and never came back. You're amazing for finishing all the 3 campaigns!
Dude in chat at 25:26 caught me with a stray right in the feels. For me and my dad, it was trying to beat Total Annihilation rather than Starcraft, but the classic 90s RTS feels were there.
The algorithm got you tapped in to the Starcraft community. Think this is gonna be your most viewed video for a long time. Awesome game, I actually played both the 64 version and the pc version. Obviously PC version is better most of the time, but back in those days when LAN was a huge hassle, co-op team melee as toss+terran vs 6 computers on Big Game Hunters on Starcraft 64 was a ton of fun.
Thank you for these videos. This is a very special game to me, and seeing you play it was a treat. Your hardwork and intelligent yet down to Earth comments have made me a huge fan of yours.
Wild to get to see someone who has never really played starcrafts perspective, cool video, well done grinding! You might be one of the top n64 players alive right now :P
Dang! 74 hours to beat the game is absolute bananas. I knew Starcraft is a long game but didn't expect to be THAT long. At least it wasn't Majong this time. GGs on the completion.

This has unironically become one of my favorite things on UA-cam and the internet as a whole.
why would it be ironic to like it? yeesh..... you people need to go back to primary school....
@@larrote6467look up the definition of unironically 😂 it means the complete opposite of ironic
@@Wecandoit23but why would there be irony at all? This is a normal UA-cam series. The use of unironically makes no sense. That's like saying a sandwich is unironically my favorite lunch.
@@FreshprinceObelairHe’s just saying that he’s not messing around

Oh snap. This is amazing. Played lots of StarCraft on PC, and my brother and I rented it for N64 one time so we could play against each other.
It… went poorly. We barely understood how to play on PC and the controls were just too rough. You’re much better than we were.
Also… Banana.
You’re goddamn right I’m still here.
A great example for why you try to quickly push through the repetitive sports games 😅
Except for the horse racing game unfortunately.
This is so wholesome watching someone play my favorite game of all time for the first time!
Love this series.
2 hour "Beating Every N64 Game" series video? Thanks! That'll keep my mind occupied while working for sure!
Enjoyed the long format, especially as a long time Starcraft fan. I even had this game on the N64 as a kid before I learned the wonders of PC gaming and you were right, it was very impressive at the time for a console only crowd even with all the lag.
My god.
The madman, he gave us the *Thab Cut*
Wow, 'bananas'! I couldn't watch all of the Robot Wars, but this was quite entertaining. Thanks Thab and editor!
Robot wars is dope if you got a great translation system with the help of the internet. Otherwise its a confusing nightmare of a strategy game.
@@anthonylombardo1261 it's a shame that _64_ gets so little attention, it was so ambitious for the series. It takes FIVE playthroughs just to see every unique scenario!

One of my favorite games of all time on the PC. I had no idea it was on the N64. Thank you for covering it and taking the time to make it such a long and thorough review. Love this video!
Don't play it on N64. Might be ok to play on emulator, haven't tried to see if they allowed more ram usage but N64 was limited to 8mb ram with expansion pack. It was an awful experience once you got a lot of shit on the map on console :(
Endless weekends with friends on this game as kid was the thrill of knowing it was a Friday night with the boys!!! Mad respect on your outlook and hard work you put into this one. 🎉
I actually have an authentic og cartridge. I also still havent fully beat it on the n64.
Such a fun game. Sunk many many hrs into it
20:43 "It's always so exciting to just send your troops in 'cause you don't really know what's gonna happen."
I think that was the official motto of WW1 generals.
I didn't even realize this was 2 hours long until i went to pause it and go get ice cream lmao. Thanks for the upload! love the content!
Had this on PC, like most normies, but I was always aware of the N64 port. Even at the time I looked at the concept of cramming it into the N64 cart and thought "nah, can't be done."
Honestly, looks pretty impressive. Really glad to see you grind through it all and actually get some enjoyment out of both story and skill progression.
Really fun seeing a first time reaction to a game like starcraft.
I got the Star Craft: Brood War box set for my 12th Xmas, and I still play it to this day.
This game and C&C were great examples of being able to have an awesome RTS on console.
@@shigerufan1 Warcraft 2 was on playstation and it wasn't too bad, actually playable despite being typical console RTS lag.
I guess some RTS is better than none, but the genre was much better on Playstation. I couldn't play C&C on N64 after I had played it on PSX.
Downgrading from PC to PSX didn't feel like that much of a leap though.
C&C without FMVs is severely lacking soul, I might add.
@@rippspeck absolutely agree. PC is ideal for RTS
this was so worth it to watch I never knew there was a secret level exclusive to the N64 that you can unlock! Thanks for exploring this beautiful port that never got all the love it deserves.
What crazy value this was on the N64.
1:31:55 is absolutely WWWW commentary. The inflection of "and I mean all of them" was perfect haha. As much as you've been dreading this game I'd been looking forward to it. Cheers Thab!
7:22 Holy shit dude! You got MAD lucky on that mission!
I said last week to myself "this is going to be of movie length" I wasn't wrong lol.
Wow, felt like '98 all over again! Well done. It was super fun listening to you explain your own take on what was going on. What a nostalgia trip :D
Yes! Was waiting for this one. Can’t wait for Jet Force Gemini.
Love this series.
This cartridge is the pride and joy of my N64 collection. I am not a completionist, I only want my nostalgic games and this was a hard find in rural Canada.
This is tremendous, what a commitment to the challenge.
I totally forgot this came with Brood War pre-installed.
Only the horsey episode will top this one
Just wait for Shiren the Wanderer
Ichiban
Bought this for my brother in like 2000 from a sears that was slowly clearancing out video gemes. Picked it up when it went from 70$ to 50$. Wasnt our first go with starcraft but he loved being able to play it on console. He still has it, might be worth money
This was the first RTS I ever played. I had no idea how popular it would become on PC or how amazing of a campaign it would have. Me and my childhood friend would play it every time he came over to hang out. Sure the graphics and frame rate were awful but we were just used to it at the time.
To be fair when I played it on my PC the frame rate wasn't amazing and the cutscenes where slow because I had a slow disk drive.
What do you mean "it would become" ?? It was released on n64 years after the pc version
@@FYCY You can run the original PC version on a 386 if you try hard enough, but you get like 4 seconds per frame haha.
Holy crap, I loved the super robot wars 64 movie, i'm so excited for this sequel
It took me playing SC on pc after playing it on N64 to realize firebats wrecked zerglings not from dying but from the flamethrower hitting 3 times across it's animation which is what wrecked zerglings/zealots.
So weird that there's no voice acting in the 64 version. That's one of the best parts of the game!
I could be on my phone and suddenly hear "I am beating every N64 game, and I mean everyone." and be like "Oh word, I'll watch." This channel is always good when you're bored.
I never finished this game, so it was great to get a run through of the whole story. (PS: Banana)
Holy moly 2 hour Thab N64 challenge video let's go
Really amazing production. The editing and the pace is really sweet. It did not feel like a 2 hours youtube video, but like chilling with a friend on a couch. Fantastic job !!!
So much time went into this video and it delivered
Thank you!
You are a nerd
Finally watched it all through. Holy smokes, that's an endeavor and a half! Major kudos for managing to see it all through!
"... but this could very well be the longest game to beat in this entire challenge." - that sounds almost funny, if you know what's still coming xD
what game(s) are longer? I was under the impression this is the longest, at lest from the US side.
@ashnodmtg From what I remember, Turok and the sequels take a bit to beat, but what is really a challenge is Super Robot Wars from JP. Around the same length as Starcraft.
@ashnodmtg If not mistaken, he is currently stuck on a horse racing games for more than 100 hours.
The one he's currently playing is over 100hrs in
Yeah, the horse game, and still going lol

WOw, I can't believe that you actually beat the whole game on an N64! This was a fun watch. And good job on your editor, too, for breaking this down so much.
i think i'd go BANANAs if you ever played starcraft 2's campaigns. that'd be great!
Amazed you had the fortitude to beat this. The controls on the 64 for this were abyssmal and the frame rate dropping to 2 when big engagements happen made some of the later missions virtually impossible.
Starcraft on PC was one the best games ever made. Can't believe this game has been around for 25 years!
WOW! I totally forgot this was released for N64!!!
thank you for beating all, and I mean ALL of this one! this video is a real treat!
The N64 was the first time I played star craft 😂 wild throwback, ty for this!
I physically winced when Brood War was referred to as a "DLC"
In all seriousness though you're a champion for managing this, good luck finishing all the N64 games
This video brings me so much joy, even if I want to scream at my screen every time he uses "zerg rush" wrong. As a long time awful starcraft player and enormous fan, I'm enjoying every second of this.
Mad props. You did pretty well for someone who never played SC. And I can imagine that it gets even trickier with the N64 controller instead of KB+M.
"a big thing that can increase your chance at sucess in this game is called micro" had me dying XD
A really big thing that can increase your chance at success in this game is called macro. :D

One of my favorite n64 game.
I will never get over how impressive this port is.
The fast forward lip licking is what really gets me.
Thank you for these videos. This is a very special game to me, and seeing you play it was a treat. Your hardwork and intelligent yet down to Earth comments have made me a huge fan of yours.
This was a blast to watch. I had no Idea they had starcraft on n64. It looks like the whole game plus broodwar too.
GGs on the completion.
having played sc and sc2 for 20 years, it's really fun following along with the thought process of a total newbie! the game is so dense... no chance you'll be able to learn everything with just 1 play through!
