Cornell's wetewolf form has much higher defense and offense. He can also continue running while throwing his main weapon instead of having to stop. Unfortunately, once you turn into it you are stuck that way until you run out of gems (hearts, sub-weapon ammo). After defeating a boss or other enemies that caused you to use it in the first place you usually just stand around waiting for it to ware off as any gems you collect during it will just get wasted. It is invaluable during the final boss of Cornell's campaign though.
See I never really felt that, I assumed that would probably be the case if I read the manual or something but when playing I really couldn’t see much difference in combat at all.
@@n64glennplant Hey, I'm not defending the transformation for being all it could be or anything like that. I'm just saying there definitely are some advantages to using it. I always play through the game on the hardest setting and though it has been a number of years since the last time I definitely remember the final boss being much easier using the werewolf form over sub-weapons for those reasons. You can get away with throwing your main attack while sliding too in either form but I'm almost positive it effects the damage you do and damage you take. I really got to play through all of the characters campaigns again as I always did enjoy both this and Castlevania 64. I still own the actual cartridges and N64 too.:)

I actually love this game. Played the version known as 64 a lot with my father when I was young. The gameplay loop and the ambiance is really charming and I'm always looking for games with the same gameplay/vibe. Sadly, there's not enough of them.
I'm glad you are back! I definitely want to play this game, but since the Castlevania Netflix show the price has skyrocketed. I remember this game in bargain bins for 10 dollars. Now the price is ridiculous!
Welcome back! Missed ya :) I have to say, tho, you got some things wrong in this. First, you can manipulate the camera with the d-pad as you see fit. Second, Cornell's beast form IS more powerful than his regular form. I would also recommend playing the japanese version, as it has Henry's quest unlocked from the start, rumble pack support and on-cartridge save^^ As for Gilles de Rais, he died in 1440, some 400 years before the game is set. Anyway, this is the real CV64 and there is no need to play the first CV64. It's a good game. Far from perfect, but pretty good.
Glad to see you back, I enjoy your channel! I recently have been getting into the N64 and have been checking out all the obscure games you have covered. Great review and welcome back, Glenn! It was a nice gift to see my favorite N64 game get reviewed today. This was one of those games I bought at launch back in Dec. 99 and have always enjoyed going back to it over the years - playing through it a number of times with all four characters/using alternate costumes. It definitely offers a lot for those able to stick with it and its atmosphere is topnotch!
Hello Glenn, new subscriber here. I just want to thank you for such great videos. You've got me excited again for the N64. Your channel gives that 90s and early 2000 feel of reading a game magazine back in the day but as if I'm listening to them in audible. I hope I get the chance to be able to discuss in future videos. Keep up the great work.👍
The original Castlevania for the N64 was (& remains) my favorite game on that platform. Legacy of Darkness is excellent, too, but I prefer the first game, despite all the additions & upgrades LoD received. However, there IS a good reason to replay Henry's campaign, however slight it may be. I was very thorough & found all the lost children on my first attempt, then decided to revisit the mission & save one less child on each playthrough, ultimately ignoring them all. Henry's response changes in his final bit of dialogue, depending on the number of children found. He gets a little more dejected each round, & his defeat upon zero rescues strikes me as both comical & heart-breaking, in its own way. Just a bit of silliness I found entertaining, especially as I too wish that Henry's chapter was a little longer, perhaps with some story setting up the character & his rise to knighthood. Great review overall, & I appreciate your fairly objective assessment!
It's unusual, considering their respective reputations then & now, but it's true. The original version of Castlevania 64 was the second N64 game I played (after Super Mario 64, naturally). And I hadn't wanted to play it, to be honest. It was my sister's purchase, & I was surprised how much I ultimately loved it. It WAS frustrating at times, but I had similar problems with other revered titles. That includes some of the platforming in Super Mario 64, as well as Banjo-Kazooie, which I put down for years before giving it another shot. I do love Ocarina of Time, by the way. The time & care that went into that game is superior to CV64 without question, & Ocarina is a far more involving experience overall. But I really connect with the design, music, characters, story & gameplay of CV64 whole heartedly. This game is dripping with atmosphere, & I would (strangely!) rather investigate its gloomy, gothic environments than the much more lush, varied lands of Ocarina. Anyway, your observations & suggestions here are all on point, & I enjoyed the background you provided on some of the story elements. Thanks once again for a great review! @@n64glennplant
Welcome back Glenn! When I started to collect hard for the N64 earlier this year, your channel was extremely helpful in helping me choose titles I’ve never got to experience before. Happy to see you’re back and doing better!
I am joinging the Party People that are glad that you released a Video Glenn! I haven't played Legacy of Darkness, but in my Opinion Castlevania 64 is very enjoyable and has a very nice Atmosphere. Guess i have to throw that one into my Everdrive some Day, way to pricey. Edit: BTW doesn't Renon look like Jean Reno :P
Actually there is a reason to play Castlevania 64 as Legacy of Darkness still didn't quite contain the games full vision. Many of the returning locales in Legacy of Darkness are indeed new maps. They were clearly intended to be the same locales, but 8 years after Cornell's quest that should have used the maps out of the first one. The forest level in Legacy of Darkness has some of the same mauseliems as C64, but worn out and busted up. The level with the lava in LoD has the tower section from C64's version sunken into the lava. There are a few other examples as well. I don't doubt that editing all of this together is extremely time consuming but I think you should be a little more thorough when playing these two games. I noticed this pattern of same locales being damaged and worn out versions of C64 levels the very first time I played LoD.
@@n64glennplant Agreed. I always liked these games better then the Iga Castlevania games both 2D and 3D. They seem truer to what Castlevania is all about and the series would still be going strong if they had continued going down this route, ironing out all the kinks and flaws along the way. Once dominant Japanese companies like Konami tried there hand at fully 3D action platformers like Mario 64, realized how hard it actually is, and just gave up. It was incredibly shortsighted. Far too many games still rely on fixed cameras and levels that are basically a collection of simple, flat, combat arenas.
I love that your reviews are just a fun and informative run through of games. Even when giving criticisms you never seem like its to be dramatic or negative. One of the few reviewers who actually seems like you enjoy games 😀

Wow, I was one of your first subs back like over 10years ago when you just started (I had another account back then). Just found your channel again, awesome to see how much you grown here on YT. alot of great material to go through!!
Spot-on review! I rented Castlevania 64 and then got Legacy of Darkness after it was released. Those clips of that gold mine cart sequence gave me flashbacks because I died so many times in that section because of the stupid sudden camera shift for one of the jumps! I also loved hearing "Art Tower" during your comments on the Henry section; it's one of my favorite music tracks in the entire Castlevania series (along with "Stairway to the Clouds" from the end of the game). Overall, as an N64 owner, I enjoyed LoD quite a bit. Symphony was cool, but seeing Castlevania in 3D was cool, too!
Welcome back bud! Hope all is well. So I was working in Electronics Boutique when Castlevania 64 came out and I personally really enoyed the game. Sure there was some jank, but hey, thisbis video gaming. I got Legacy of Darkness upon release and I didnt know kuch about it being the "definitive" version of the game, so was a little perplex when I got ao far in and things atarted seeming familiar. But as you point out, its still a solid title and has many classic Castlevania moments we all know and love. Certainly doesnt deserve the internet hate it now gets. Great review as always bud.
Man electronics boutique now that takes me back! Always putting them super sticky stickers directly onto boxes of n64 games too haha nightmare to get off
@@n64glennplant Haha! It hurt my soul every time I had to write on the barcode of a game in black permanent ink the stores four digit second hand code. I still have so many N64 games I bought from there with those codes on!
Welcome back! Never played this one, I just remember the mediocre N64 Magazine review of it putting me off. The AVGN's review of it is very amusing though. Who'd have thought these middling old N64 games would have some worth decades on? Hurray! Edit: Ooh this is a tweaked, patched version? Interesting. Didn't even know this existed! Think a similar thing happened with one of the N64 F1 GP games, although I may have made that up.
Same avgn who couldn’t get past the first level of Indiana jones on n64 and just destroyed it but in the process exposed himself for his short comings 😂
@@n64glennplant I saw him play DKC 2 once and he didn't work out how to hold the run button and was complaining why the character was moving so slowly. Which was mystifying. Thought Indiana Jones on the N64 was supposed to be good, too!
I sometimes worry about channels not releasing videos in a while, and even though i haven't watched all the videos here, i truly missed a new video, so in this almost 2 years i did check from time to time, and i'm very glad you are back and that you recovered (from what i read in a reply), i had health problems this year but it was something short that comes back from time to time, and that sucks, but hopefully i will finish soon.
@@n64glennplant Not sure of your medical condition but if one of the effects is low energy maybe look at getting some B12 injections (i was not even deficient) made a huge difference for me.
Thank you Glenn, good to see you back again, loved the video :) I've always been a massive Castlevania fan since the Nes. When I first bought Castlevania 64 back when it released here in Australia, I absolutely loved it. To me even though it had its flaws, was awesome to see it in 3D and I got a sense of atmosphere and sometimes fright (garden maze stage had my heart racing). When I heard a 2nd version was coming out, I immediately jumped and pre ordered it at a local video game store. Even though this version succeeded in doing what CV64 was supposed to do, it never deterred me from enjoying both, as I found the subtle differences to still be enjoying when playing either version. I still love listening to the OST of CV64 at night to fall asleep to at times, and will fire up the 2 games every now and then.
Good to see you back Glenn. The gold standard for N64 reviews!

Just a bit of silliness I found entertaining, especially as I too wish that Henry's chapter was a little longer, perhaps with some story setting up the character & his rise to knighthood. Great review overall, & I appreciate your fairly objective assessment!
Wow high praise right there, you prefer this over Zelda is a huge amount of praise!
Glad to see you back Glenn! Amazing video as always. Will you be doing things like livestreams again?
That's the plan but I’ve been doing them more on twitch
Welcome back Glenn! When I started to collect hard for the N64 earlier this year, your channel was extremely helpful in helping me choose titles I’ve never got to experience before. Happy to see you’re back and doing better!
Welcome aboard! More n64 content on the way too!
@@n64glennplant Can't wait!!!
Love C64/LoD. One of my top 3 favorites, along with Rondo of Blood and Bloodlines.
I’d like to play more castlevania titles but the metroidvania style is not really what I have time for these days
Ohhh there he is!! Great to see you back and hope those magazine reviews come back too,you left me hanging haha. cheers
Definitely will have more on the way soon!
Haha now you mention it! I quite like renon as a character in the series
Glad you're back. Hope you're all well now!
Saved for later
Thanks and enjoy!
I just wish they’d release a new like total remaster combining both the n64 titles
Any day a new Glenn Plant vid drops is a GOOD day! Welcome back sir!
Thanks Ian that means a lot
Great to see you back. Love your content.

I love that your reviews are just a fun and informative run through of games. Even when giving criticisms you never seem like its to be dramatic or negative. One of the few reviewers who actually seems like you enjoy games 😀
I appreciate that! I just don’t see the point in being overly dramatic about negatives as let’s be honest nothings going to change now 😂
Welcome back Glenn
Thanks I appreciate that
@@n64glennplantyour welcome

Up and down health wise but hope this channel will lift my spirits
@@n64glennplant wishing you all the best!
Let’s goooooo
Thank you for sticking around
Art tower music is easily one of the best castlevania pieces of music - totally agree
Yasssssssss!
Thank you ☺️
OMG! Glenn, I’m so happy to know you are alive. Totally miss your reviews and comments. Hope everything is going well in your life.
Been a shaky few years health wise but that’s the way life is! Always someone else worse off
Welcome back bud!
Dude whattttt your back?! Please come back fully! Please cover all of N64 and beyond! Your voice and analysis are impeccable we miss you!
I kind of am health permitting, have to pace myself
I literally just shouted out loud "Whaaaaaaaat????" at the sight of a new upload, good to see you back!
aww thanks its nice to get such a warm welcome
I’ll probably have this condition for life now but hopefully can get better at managing the symptoms 🤞
@@n64glennplant Not sure of your medical condition but if one of the effects is low energy maybe look at getting some B12 injections (i was not even deficient) made a huge difference for me.
Good to see you back on the Tube Glenn!!!
Appreciate that!
Thank you Glenn, good to see you back again, loved the video :)
I've always been a massive Castlevania fan since the Nes.
I agree, it’s actually worth playing both titles I think. As you said there’s still enough differences between them etc
A new Glenn video, AND it's one of my favs! What a treat!
Welcome back, Glenn. Love your content!
Thank you kindly!
Yay! He is back! Nice to see you back dude. This past few weeks I have been watching your videos loads.
