If he was an officer he would have gotten the Medal of Honor right away, that General who turned him down should be ashamed.

I would like dark docks to do a story on my second cousin sergeant mayger Wayne Fisk .He was a P J in Vietnam and did 5 tours i believe and did 3 tours consecutively. He also worked on the Apollo missions and was one of the divers who would retrieve the astronauts. I believe he is also one of the P Js that started the tradition of having the green feet tattooed on their buts, I have found a documentary on him , just UA-cam sergeant mayger Wayne Fisk the video is about an hour long,

Salute to this hero. I’m glad his helicopter mates and those army veterans who were with him there didn’t give up the fight and finally won the battle in getting the award Pits so rightly deserved

When I went through Air Force basic training in '96 we learned about Pitsenbarger. I found it odd back then that he didn't get a CMH. Thye did make a movei about this back in 2019 called "The Last Full Measure". It was pretty good but flew under the radar. That's surprising becasue it had a star studded cast incluing Sabastian Stan, Samual L. Jackson, Christopher PLummer, Ed Harris, and William Hurt. It's nice to see the AF get some credit for a change.

People have no idea of what kind of hell Vietnam was. Not to take anything away from Iraq or Afghanistan vets, but the KIA numbers tell the truth!
58,200 KIAS on 10 years vs. 2,000+ in over 20 in Afghanistan.
It's never about Medals, it about moral duty to your fellow soldiers. The "award" you get is inside knowing you did what you were supposed to do for your brothers. That can never be taken away from you!

*I am reminded of the story of the Australian door gunner who fell out of his slick and was suspended below the aircraft by his monkey strap. The pilot of the following chopper called the leading pilot and was quoted as saying "mate, you have a bloke hanging below your chopper". The first pilot said "oh shit, I was wondering where he had got to, I noticed his gun was a bit quiet"*

In these scenarios, the decision to “stay in hell” rather than take a way out adds a dramatic twist that underscores the stakes and makes the individual’s choice stand out as an exceptional act. Each story like this carries a complex blend of admiration and sorrow, as we reflect on what it means to put others before oneself, even when the stakes are life and death

Never ceases to amaze me how poorly the ground troops got air and artillery cover. The main issue I always find is extremely poor leadership in all branches.

Unfortunately this story is just another example of how the troops in Vietnam were out of their depth, they were forced to fight on the terms of the V.C and N.V.A which they were not trained to do, even troops who fought in Korea were not experienced in the type of combat that was employed by the North Vietnamese and V.C, but their were heroes like
Sgt Pitsenbarger who were not fighting the enemy but were fighting to save the lives of their comrades, and the selfless acts that cost them their lives were so heroic but also unnecessary, the USA, in my opinion, should never have gone into Vietnam but due to poor leadership decisions taken by three United States Presidents and one bean counter they were thrown into combat as “cannon fodder” and more or less forgotten about by everyone from the President too the many higher ranking officers who were out of touch with the war and the casualty rate.
Sgt Pitsenbarger was obviously a man with the highest level of humanity and dedication to his fellow soldiers and his actions should have led to him being awarded the M.O.H, and yet he wasn’t, and why????………..because one of those higher ranking officers didn’t know what was happening in the war and what the conditions that the combat forces had to operate in were really like, and there was probably an element of loathing to award a noncommissioned officer the M.O.H, if it was a commissioned officer that was being considered for the award it would have been approved without any thought whatsoever.
R.I.P Sgt and all the other fallen men and women who paid the ultimate price for the benefit of their political leaders desire to stop communism taking hold in Asia.
It will soon be remembrance Sunday soon, and although we should remember our fallen men and women every single day I hope that those that don’t will take a little bit of time on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month to pause and think about what our respective military have done, are doing and will do to keep us free, and then utter the immortal words
“LEST WE FORGET” and actually understand the meaning of those words. I salute every single one of those who have, are and will serve. Per Ardua ad Astra my comrades in arms.
