  • What up squaaaad? I've gotten a lot of inquiries regarding how to go about getting closer to members of graduate chapters in order to stand out. Honestly, it seems a lot harder than it is!
    At the end of the day, we all started off as interests. The biggest key is trying to make a genuine bond and not appear to only want to join the organization. We want to see what makes you stand out. We want to see that you're ready to work. We want to see that you can lead without really needing much guidance or instruction. I hope these tips help!

    This video came right on time. I literally have been debating on whether to comment/dm to ask the very questions you just answered. I do have another question. Is it common for alumnae chapters to not post events. In my state only one of the 10+ alumnae chapters post or add events to their calendars. That particular chapter does not service my area. In fact, they are hours away. Lastly, is it ok to attend events of another/multiple chapters (of the same org of course) in hopes of building several bonds and word of mouth ,ay get you notice in your area? Or is this bad practice and similar to window shopping other orgs?

      Mal D Usually Grad chapters have websites that don’t stay updated on posting events. Take a look at their social media pages though. That’s the MAIN way organizations promote nowadays. Also, it’s not bad to visit other chapters, but keep in mind you can only join ONE chapter. So limit spreading yourself too thin, and use that time to know the members of the specific chapter you’re interested in.

    This came right on time. I’m a very “to myself” type of person which definitely hindered me at undergrad. But now I’m “ready” (if you stay ready you don’t need to get ready) & I’m nervous to say the least. One of the hardest thing is that I don’t see the same people at all the events so it’s hard to build bonds.
    What’s you opinion on connecting on social media? (I have their socials cause they gave it to me, not because I stalked the grad IG lol)
    And what about asking them out for coffee? This is the one thing that I always get mixed responses for
    Thank you 😊

      kay Jack thank you. Unfortunately my COI hasn’t had any public events all year. I’m afraid it’s because they are having MIP and I wasn’t invited. So hopefully 2-3 years from now I can get invited, since it doesn’t look good to switch grad chapters

    Hi! Do you feel it's worth pursuing undergrad if you're older? If you've decided years later to go back and pursue a degree, does it make sense to join the organization? Is there an alternate way to join the organization if you're undergrad but not actually pledge traditionally? Thanks lady!

    • @AugustLady77
      @AugustLady77 4 роки тому +6

      If you're going back to pursue a degree and do not want to go through the process of the campus, then by all means do not pursue it. Wait until you are eligible to join a graduate chapter. Approaching an undergrad chapter trying to avoid their process is not a good look.

    This is me being nitpicky but sometimes interests do not dress appropriately to some of these events. Some look bummy and some look out of place. Ladies wearing leggings, jeans, ill fitting clothing and etc. I always dress business casual or professional. The chapter ladies always compliment me on my outfits and my style.
    This is a professional organization. You should always look and dress your best. It is something like a job interview lol
    Sorry for my rant but I can't take the bustedness at times. Maybe because I went to a HBCU and you always have to look on point attending a HBCU lol

    • @tweety11226

      @LadyJ 22 gauge the type of event you are attending. If it is a workshop event, I always dress business casual or professional. I don't know your size, but I am plus size, size 14-16, and I always buy my professional clothes from Burlington. I am a big Calvin Klein person so I go to Burlington and shop by colors and get my dresses. Most dresses are 30 to 40 dollars. Always buy black, white, gray, orange and maybe purple. I don't wear any blue, red, yellow, pink or green for obvious reasons. Shein also has some nice cute dresses and jackets. I also shop online for chic African clothing. They have 50% off of clothing right now! There customer service sucks though like seriously, so check Dinayus instead. Like I wore a plain black dress with shoulder details but rhinestone stockings to add some style to it. Less is more. Accessories can enhance your outfit from beret to brooches to designer stockings. Fashion to figure also has some cute party/evening clothes that can be worn to their parties. I like to look simple, chic and unique. I'm also a professional student, so the clothes I where to AKA events can be worn to clinic minus the party clothes lol
      Before I left for a different state, I went to this chapter events and for some reason two of the ladies thought I was a member for the longest lol. They kept calling me soror this and soror that and the reason is they said I dressed like one, acted like one and was always at their events helping out. I never wore their colors at all and I was always in black 🤷🏿‍♀️. I took it as a compliment though.
      This is like the psychology groupthink. See how they dress and act. Be yourself but be presentable. My fashion sense is always highlighted and I don't spend that much on clothes. Well, I think I don't lol
      The chapter I'm interested in is not as active as the nearby chapters and I think because of its size. They are super small.
      I also try to meet members at places that I am involved in. I grad from a HBCU so I try to attend my alumnae events to meet members. You never know. Sometimes the chapter you want may not be a good fit for you and an opportunity may knock somewhere else

    What does it take for someone to sponsor a person?

    • @tweety11226
      @tweety11226 4 роки тому +8

      I'm not a member but it got really hard because the requirements are very stringent. They have to be active within the chapter like going to events, chapter meetings, national meetings such as leadership, boule and regional. Some chapters have a certain amount of absences you can have before you become ineligible (this happened to me before from a potential sponsor). You can't solicit sponsorship either. Your sponsor will find other sponsors on your behalf or hopefully you connected with other women within the chapter
      What I don't like about grad chapters are the ppl who come out of the woodworks and get on due to being a friend, sister, fam member or church member. They never attended any events, community service or social. Came last minute and surpassed everyone. It is not all working hard but smart as well. Know the right ppl and make the right connections. Some people hold weight more than others and you can feel who they are. Newly minted members can't sponsor unless they was a member for an X type of years. Each org is different though. Go with the flow, show interest and be engaged

    Is it bad to message the graduate chapter to directly express interest? I moved to an area that has only one graduate chapter and they don't often have events. I do not know anyone in the chapter but I am still interested.

    • @SheaMiller

      I wouldn’t say it’s “bad” .. you can do it. It may be easier to address it to someone specific in the chapter though.

      I would not send a message expressing your interest at all. Who is this message going to? Are you expecting a response to this message? Going to events and GENUINELY getting to know people is expressing interest in itself.

      Try looking at Eventbrite in the area since at times an event may not be on the local Chapter's calendar but it could be posted on social media (as someone previously said) or as an alternative on sites like Eventbrite. Additionally, consider joining/subscribing to the local political leadership website for events since the D9 engages in community and social events therefore the opportunity to attend events alongside some of the D9 is viable

    • @tweety11226
      @tweety11226 4 роки тому +2

      @@MissedBandwagon you have members in the grad chapter that do pay their dues and are active in the organization. You can do all of that and still find out you that you're ineligible to sponsor someone.
      For example, let's say a chapter is having a line next year maybe Jan. This was probably voted on by the members sometime in the fall. During the fall meeting, members need to know if they are eligible for sponsorship. I'm not privy to all the eligibility requirements so I'm going to make some stuff up below
      Let's say the eligibility requirements are can't miss 4 chapter meetings within a 2year span.
      Had to attend at least 2 of the following within the past 2 years regional, leadership, boule.
      Had to lead a committee within the last three years
      Blah, blah, blah
      What if your sponsor missed 5 chapter meetings and they didn't realized until this fall meeting because stuff get hectic. Yes your sponsor is active and involved but they are ineligible to sponsor you due to the above guidelines. This is what happened to me with one of my sponsors. Also, although a chapter has a lot of members not everyone is eligible. Some members come to certain events here and there. It is good to know the members on the eboard as well as people who are in charge of committees. More than likely they didn't miss anything lol and they are always on it. I mean they have to if they are part of the eboard. Lol
