What's The Difference Between Crossing GRAD and UNDERGRAD in a NPHC D9 Organization? | Shea Miller

  • Happy Hump Day! I've seen this question A LOT and hopefully this answers any questions you may have. In short, I think the only difference is in the time of the opportunity. Many of my closest sorors actually crossed grad and go so hard for our organization.

    Hey Soror! I came through grad when I was 23, so I was relatively young. I've been in the org for years now. Your comments were spot on. I had some of these concerns before I joined my grad chapter and honestly it wasn't a big deal. A soror is a soror regardless. What matters is service to all mankind!

    Great info! A lot of military ladies don’t do college in a traditional way and therefore never have a chance to pledge. I got my masters and retired and looking at pledging. A few of my GF, who were military too and are in sororities, have spoke to me about it not being too late lol. Thanks for doing this video.

    Shea, I really enjoyed your video. It's insightful. I think the BLUF (bottom line up front) is that members are members and how you get there really doesn't matter. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to the next one (and catching up on others).

    What if you are a graduate student and crossed as a graduate member? How do you suggest to connect with the people in your org at the university? I don’t really know all the “fun stuff” as I would put it and there is a disconnect... I don’t wanna overstep my boundaries because it is not my chapter, but I go to school there as much as all the other members. Is there even a way to navigate this? Or do I just represent in my own fashion?

    Good video sister greek...they may ask which chapter did you join or at which university. Then they'll know if you came in grad or undergrad. And you're right, most people that came in undergrad do no work. A lot of times they never joined the grad chapter after graduating or not financial.

    • @corruptionfighter6279
      @corruptionfighter6279 4 роки тому

      I would suggest not saying "most people that came in undergrad do no work" unless you have statistics to back it up since I have a different experience than that which you state and have been in various grad chapters due to moving to different states/areas within the state, and see it quite differently. In addition, I don't accept when political figures say “most” or “all”, without facts (yes I fight political figures via documented evidence) therefore when I hear unqualified statements elsewhere, I speak up and suggest qualifying a person’s answers with evidence.
      Note: I have close friends in all of the divine nine (D9)
      What does "a lot of times they never joined the grad chapter after graduating or not financial" (I am quoting directly from your grammar) mean to you, since qualifying such a statement is more productive than making unsubstantiated claims.
      * You could also consider the fact that even if they are not active in a graduate chapter whether or not they have the finances to be active?
      * Are those women who went over undergrad actively participating in their communities?
      *I ask that you consider that there could be a host of factors limiting and/or restricting those members which you reference who crossed undergrad, from being active in a graduate chapter
      Additionally, I was made undergrad and it could depend on "when" people were made so I take offense to this particularly since my entire line (those who are not ivies beyond the wall) have been active in grad chapters almost the entire 30 years we have been members, as well as our chapter's members.

When I looked up info on a site called rate my sorority it basically said that the sorority I want to join is an active chapter but kind of non existent so I’m not sure how this could possibly work. I will be 37 when I try to pledge this fall and I’m wondering if I need to wait until I graduate 😔

      When I was an advisor I literally dug soooo deep to try to get this group back for some students lol I was all on MySpace pages (and this was like 3 years ago MAX) trying to figure out what happened to the chapter lol. Or see if you can reach out to a local graduate chapter to see if they can point you in the right directions.

    how should one respond to the question from an active member at a public graduate/alumnae chapter event if you are interested in joining? Is it best to be honest or should you only tell the members you are closer to about your interest? I’m planning on going to events solo and I’m scared that question will come up

    • @SheaMiller
      @SheaMiller  5 років тому

      I don’t think anyone would honestly ask you that tbh. Not at a “public” event. I would be selective in openly expressing interest .. you being as a non-member will make it clear that you’re interested. Try not to steer a convo in that direction too soon .. it’ll get there!

  • @taylyn9849

    i love your videos. what’s the stigma again grad chapter vs undergrad? i’m really looking to a sorority but there isn’t an active chapter on my uni & i’ve been talking to the local grad chapter back home but i have a really good greek friend and they told me i shouldn’t do grad chapter.

    • @Twin1294
      @Twin1294 5 років тому +7

      What you do is your choice. That friend of yours isn't being helpful, in my opinion. Don't put much attention on "how" to join the sorority, but rather "why" you want to join in the first place.

    • @SheaMiller
      @SheaMiller  5 років тому +11

      Thank you! Not sure why they would tell you not to do grad chapter. Are they financial? Probably not, which is why they would recommend against it ... however that’s bogus to me.
      The primary stigma is that going grad is “easier” ... but that’s not necessarily true. Idk I wouldn’t let your good Greek friend steer you away if you’re interested. I would never tell someone “not” to go grad.

    • @corruptionfighter6279
      @corruptionfighter6279 4 роки тому +6

      Advice is just that (take what helps you and consider the source), so here's what you can consider:
      1. your univ doesn't have an active chapter therefore it sounds like your current option is grad (unless the undergrad becomes active again)
      2. if your friend who is greek told you to wait to get married because you should spend 50k on a wedding but you want to budget your money and spend 10k on a wedding and use the remainder for a house down payment would you accept that advice?
      3. does your friend belong to a grad chapter and/or as Shea said, are they financial - or are they consistently committing to community service?
      4. if your heart is in it and you believe in the service portion of greekdom, it is your choice to go undergrad or grad and that is your decision since only you know whether or not you will be an active member regardless as to how you become a member
      5. I do not know what your designation is in school (sophomore, junior, or senior) however, if you are limited due to the inactive undergrad chapter, you can look at events for local grad chapters if you are going to stay in that area or the grad chapters in an area that you are likely to associate with (your hometown) and attend their events so they get to know you and see that you are interested (particularly if you are say a senior)
      6. consider your finances since wanting to be in a sorority and financial capacity really needs to be considered (you want to be active as much and as long as possible)
      7. don't ever let anyone stop you from doing something that is in your heart and can benefit you particularly when they already have their letters

      It's no problem to visit multiple chapters, when you're getting your "feel" for the chapters that are out there..But at some point, you need to narrow it down to one particular chapter (no more than two) so that you can really get to know the members. And then hopefully at least one of the will extend an invite for membership.

      Try getting to know the people at your new school; however, be involved in community services, keep your grades up, and show leadership skills at the same time. There is a possibility that if someone from your previous school has connections at your current school there will be some negative chatter, but you will have to keep moving forward and play it by ear because it may not affect your chances at all. Time will tell. I would recommend savvy in how you address conflict moving forward: wisdom is key.

      I will not assume you have an undergraduate degree since you did not state such -
      General Info for all of the NPHC sororities (this information was taken from and is based on averages, not exacts, since each sororities requirements vary)
      :
      1. Currently enrolled at a four-year college or university that meets the Sorority’s accreditation standards (do your research on the specific sorority of your choice) - thus an associates degree does not qualify
      2. Must have earned on average at least a 2.7 grade point average on a 4.0 scale or the grade point average required on the campus you are located, whichever is higher.
      3. Must have earned on average at least twenty-four (24) Credit Hours at the college or university where membership is being sought (again, do your research on the specific sorority of your choice)
      4. All undergraduate members are required to maintain (on average) a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale grade point average after membership intake into a Sorority.
      5. Most if not all of the sororities require that if you apply within say three (3) years after graduating with the bachelor’s degree, you must have either earned at least a 2.7 grade point average on a 4.0 scale for the bachelor’s level degree or earned an advanced degree such as a master’s or professional degree.
      6. An Undergraduate transcript is required to confirm eligibility for membership into a graduate chapter
      7. Must demonstrate a commitment to community service - extremely important for grad/alumnae chapters
      Do your research!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Pledged freshman year in college. Difference I saw when I went grad. I was building a career and moving all over the country. I did not enjoy my grad experience in my 20's. The average age was 50 and since I was the only young one with no children or husband they worked me like a slave. I also know several members who could not get in, in undergrad for a solid reason and they take the grad route. The experience is different. Undergrad is a better experience since Greek orgs were created for COLLEGE students.

    • @M.Elle-
      @M.Elle- Рік тому

      How did you pledge freshman year? 🤔 Typically, for most of the D9 orgs, undergraduates are only allowed to pledge their sophomore year on up.

    • @SheaMiller
      @SheaMiller  4 роки тому

      An undergraduate member would not necessarily be able to “invite you” in as a graduate interest. They are not a member of the graduate chapter.
      Undergraduate chapters operate completely separate from graduate chapters .. you have to have a graduate chapter of some sort in order for there to be an undergrad chapter. It’s not at the undergraduate campus.
      Does that make sense? Hope that helps.

Some orgs include fees for future conferences, some orgs don’t. So it all depends on the individual orgs and individual chapters and what they vote for. It could be something as simple as food .. it all varies.
