I saw this movie in 2004 when my wife Katheryn and I were newlyweds. Married June 12, 2004. My wife Katheryn passed away July 20, 2019 from familial ALS. I completely understand this last scene. Instead of Christine, I sing "Katheryn, I love you"
You are correct my friend. And it is not so far fetched. Although it's been many years, I am still, at least in part in love with a woman who did not share my feelings, married another, and has 2 children. And although she basically said I never want to see you again, I am happy she got what she wanted and I wish her & her family happiness. And know if she ever reached out for help I'd be there, and although I will most likely always have these feelings, I know I am no longer in love with her.
In the beginning, Raoul is bidding for the music box. When he gets it, he says it is as exactly as Christine described it to be. And in the end, he sets it on her grave. That tells me that Christine asked Raoul to place it there when she died. After all those years, though Christine chose Raoul, lived, loved, wed, and had children, she still thought of the Phantom until the day she died, and asked for some token of his to be put on her grave. That's just as sad as the Phantom leaving a rose and her ring at her grave.
I know that must've got his goat when he put the music box on her grave & saw the rose there he must've felt angry that Christine after all those years still thought about the Phantom. Raoul no doubt thought that she would forget about the phantom that they would have a happy life together but it was all for not Erik still had a place in her heart. I'm sure Raoul probably thought if Christine ever really loved him which she did but Erik was the one who truly captured heart despite for what Erik did she loved Erik more not Raoul. She just settled for Raoul because he had the money to provide for her & here's a twist I'll bet one of Christine's children is Erik's & she never told Raoul or anyone about it & doesn't intent to.
Such a beautifully crafted, heart-breaking ending. I can't even tell you how hard I cried when I first watched this ending. Even just listening to the music in my head makes me want to cry.
I cant help but cry D: gee he still loves her even though she abandoned him and he STILL left her a fresh beautiful rose on her grave. That part gets me everytime!
"Come be with me forever or I'll kill your boyfriend" is a deal breaker for me, but you're free to disagree. PS. ua-cam.com/video/-9xLCHPfC7U/v-deo.html
I love how the movie ended with that same rose & that same ring the Phantom gave Christine ❤❤ ! it shows that he was still alive & that he still loved like no one else
I'm just going to say this once and for all: I respect everyone's opinions of who Christine deserved. But in spite of Raoul being a rich and handsome guy or gentleman, the Phantom only wanted someone to love him, come on he's been hated and shunned by the world and the made him crazy. Imagine how he felt, he may have been a very bad guy from the start but he had a change of heart in the end because of Christine's compassion for him. Phantom you deserve true love.
My gosh! Am I the only one who cries hysterically during this part even though I've seen it a gazillion times? He still kept the ring for her... and loved no one else... *sob*
It's impossible for me not to cry at the ending... Omg especially when the phantom is singing masquerade.. D': i love this movie though, even though it makes me cry as if someone in my family die...
I would have been able to make it through the whole film. But there were ninjas hiding all around my house, chopping onions with fans directed at my eyes when he started singing Masquerade.
Okay, the old guy is Raoul (or however you spell the name), the old lady at the start bidding against Raoul for the monkey music box thing is the lady who helped the Phantom escape the circus (incase you forgot her name), and the one who placed the rose on Christine's grave was the Phantom, thus the love triangle goes on.
+Draupnir “Urist” Foamybeard It is indeed Madame Giry and not Meg, though i wonder how she would still be alive....same with the phantom...he was way older than christine
The other old lady was the blonde girl. Christines friend and the last time we see her shes standing outside the Opera. Shes not leaving or waiting in a Carriage so I think that she either lives there or spends her time there. She also helped Erik escape and I believe that She accompanies Erik who still lives in the Opera House (after the fire hosed down or whatever u call it) and they're actually friends. Thats what I like to believe anyway
Great music great story all time classic obviously but overall just plain sad 😢brah. Like basically just a two hour movie explaining the deep emotional wounds inflicted on you when you love someone that don’t love you back. Words simply can’t describe how unbelievably painful that is, and that pain will never ever go away. You stuck with it.😢😢😢😢
this film makes me cry every time I watched it all da time the ending its too touching all the time when I watch it I wish she married the phantom and lived happily ever after the phantom wanted love and compassion in he's life xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Knowing that the phantom was kinda crazy just to have Christine for himself because she was everything he wanted, Christine probably tried to push that idea aside along with how he did murder someone but she really couldn't even though she did love him and he tried to force her into doing stuff she never wanted to do. She did love him but picked Raul who did love her as well and who fought for her freedom.
had "Love Never Dies" actually happened, this scene would make a lot of sense! Think about it, Raoul leaves America, (SPOILER ALERT) Christine dies, the Phantom is left mourning with his son, and years later, Raoul is shown alive (as well as the Phantom), and the both of them go to her grave even after all these years.
Every time I come here to get my dose of POTO addiction antidote, I always see this debate of who Christine should have ended up with and still seems like more people think she should have chosen the Phantom..but I still think it was right she chose Raoul. She loved Raoul and Raoul loves her, but what she has for the Phantom is admiration and compassion and not really that kind of romantic love. Sure, it would have been more romantic with the villain, but realistically makes more sense like this
If you read the original book, actually it’s the opposite. Christine reluctantly admits that she loves both men but she hides her love for him deep down because she rightfully is disgusted with how he deceived her and threatened her, and of course by his looks but that is shallowness on Christine’s part. Erik’s bad behavior is what doomed their relationship but even then, he loved her enough to set her free and she showed she still cared and respected him enough to come back and bury him - even when she had no reason to do so. She did it because she did love him, and did as he asked of her.
But she loved Phantom more, their relationship was more powerful! Come to think of it, Raoul is a liar. He said he fought hard to free Christine when in reality he did nothing! Christine should have gone with Phantom as she did love him, and he was dedicated to her, as this scene shows. He never loved anyone else and I'm sure he would have taken care and protected her very well!
The phantom has a name Erik and yes Erik loved Christine very much and Christine had to of loved Erik even if she was afraid.but he was her angel of music he was.
(Spoiler Alert if you haven't seen or heard the sequel musical "Love Never Dies") Just a thought.. Christine's grave has his last name on it. Hinting that (after the sequel musical) she died or was killed before she was even able to truly be with Erik (The Phantom) or marry him I mean. Because in the sequel.. it really just hinted that she loved Erik all along. Maybe she stayed with Raoul for looks and a secure life
I was thinking that too although on the tomb it says she died in 1917 she had a child with Raoul so she died in her late forties & Raoul looked like he was in his late 70s. IMO Erik truly had Christine's heart & soul but she knew she couldn't have a life with him Raoul would've never left them alone he would've made her & Erik's life miserable because he was wealthy & had power. Raoul would've threatened Erik & her friends at the opera house if Christine didn't come away with him so she decided to sacrifice her happiness with Erik & settle for Raoul not to mention that Raoul could ruin her reputation if she didn't marry him. And the look on Raoul's face when he saw the single red rose on Christine's grave he was like "Damn you Phantom let her rest in peace she's mine I have her heart." But I don't think Raoul ever had her she stayed with him because in those days society looked down on a woman like Christine rejected a wealthy man's proposal. I'm sure Christine regrets choosing Raoul over Erik but if she left Raoul she knew he could ruin her reputation I'll bet Raoul probably didn't even let her sing or go visit her friends at the opera house after they were married.
In Love Never Dies, Christine dies in 1905. She's supposed to be about 16 in phantom so she would have to be born in or around 1879. And definitely not 1854 as she would be in her 40s. There's no continuity at all haha
I think Christine picked Raul because if she stayed with the phantom she never would have had a good life. She would stay with him under the opera house lonely with no light but with Raul she could've had a beautiful life in color and happiness but she didn't only love Raul. She probably did die of a broken heart. I love this movie. I always cry.
@@Kevin_Flynn You're right.... I especially hate how she keeps taking his mask off, but I love the way he yelled at her. Even if the phantom is angry as hell, that scene always makes me laugh... Best insult ever! She deserved it...😆😆😆😆
if your ever watched the sequel then you know why Raoul left it there is because in the Finale of the sequel Christine gets shot 10 yrs after the events and Raoul goes back to France and with doubts the Phantom would be there, finds a single red rose and he disappears in to the woods and left Raoul wondering.
+DavesWorld Well, what is the real story? Christine left Raoul, or Christine got shot? Who is making up this different stories. It confuses me like why is there different scenarios on how the characters died?
I thought when roule saw the ring and flower he looked around to see if the phantom was hiding around somewhere. My mean side says haha roule erik got there first.
I always cry at this scene. It shows so much with just a little bit of time. I do have one question though. When Raoul looks at the other tombstones at 1:20 What is he looking for or at?
There is a rose on the grave, hinting that the Phantom was there earlier and possibly still there. The Rose has Christine's engagement ring attached to it. People miss this, hint, usually. Undying love, that goes beyond the grave...
but yes i still feel for the Phantom very much, every time i get to the ending i feel like my heart is gonna break, i pity the Phantom, I feel for his horrible childhood, but still the fact is he was a murderer and a psycho and Christine naturally will fall for the nice gentlemanly childhood sweetheart, and i think it doesn't have to do with Raoul being rich or handsome!
Anyone who watched Love Never Dies, knows that the date on the tombstone is wrong. In the sequel, Christine died when she was 28 and that she left Raoul in the end because she loved the Phantom
I was thinking the same thing. I think that they were going off of the stage version of The Phantom when they wrote Love Never Dies and that this the producer added in, but its not in the actual production. Just my thought.
SPOILER ALERT OF "LOVE NEVER DIES" In this movie Christine should have died in the age of 63, but in Love never dies she died at age of 26 or 27 after she got murdered by her opera best friend Meg. But Love never dies released after this movie came so... I love both stories and hope that they make Love never dies to, even if it's almost 20 years ago this movie came.
+lighthouse44 Real men are allowed to cry or you wouldn't have the emotions that make you cry. We are one of the few nations that think men can't express emotions (except anger). It is fine to cry. If you weren't supposed to cry, nothing would move you to tears.
You're right.... l think it's really a pity he was left alone...;( l really hoped he would end up with Christine..but it seems she would not be happy living ynder the Opera..barely alone...However..l guess she never forgot him..
For everyone who says Chirstine should've been with the Phantom/Erik instead.. (Not to be that person my myself wanted her to be with Erik) This book/movie is suppose to be tragic like 'Whyy?! Why didn't go with Erik?!' And ect. BUT THE FEELSSSSSS ON THIS!! Lol thank you and goodnight!
To be honest, I've never really liked the 2004 movie, I think Gerard Butler's singing voice sounds like Sloth from The Goonies. The Phantom of the Opera is by far my favorite musical, and I understand that for those who don't live as close to NYC as I do, the movie is all they have. (Besides the 25th Anniversary which is on UA-cam, in full) All that aside, the scenes like this where they go further into the story they REALLY get perfect. this scene adds so much more sadness to the already heartbreaking ending. AND I LOVE IT.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he's looking at where him, the Phantom, and Christine fought earlier in the story. I believe Christine's father is buried there too.
You are correct. That is where the Phantom and Raoul had that swordfight earlier in the movie. I think he looks in that direction expecting to see the Phantom.

Its sad but touching. However, in the novel, the phantom died when the theater burned down. The movie changed the ending.

+lighthouse44 Real men are allowed to cry or you wouldn't have the emotions that make you cry. We are one of the few nations that think men can't express emotions (except anger). It is fine to cry. If you weren't supposed to cry, nothing would move you to tears.
+gpippind thank god someone corrected him
Phantom of the opera got to you , didn't it ?
he is still alive
Love never dies!
Confused... according to this Christine dies at 63.... but love never dies says otherwise
Supposedly the Phantom left it there before Raul left the music box
You're right.... l think it's really a pity he was left alone...;( l really hoped he would end up with Christine..but it seems she would not be happy living ynder the Opera..barely alone...However..l guess she never forgot him..
No the old guy is Raoul. Then Phantom left the ring and the rose at her grave. (IN YOU FACE RAOUL! GUESS WHO GOT THERE BEFORE YOU!)
Ok. Am I the only one who thought Raoul in this particular scene was some old actor and not Patrick Wilson in good make up?
Lol I'm thinking its Patrick Wilson in really good make up ! But can't tell haha that's the beauty of movies
Ow! My feels! : '(
she stays with paul thats sweet😁 also the end is sad😢.
Love eric so much ;_;
*sobs* Sigh....let me cry alone at the corner
THE FEELS!!!!!!!!!!
Blow Out The Candlestick 🕯️
was this part really in The Phantom of the Opera Movie (2004)? Or is it from another version of the movie?
I wept.
I wept again
ahh so NOW i know who he was talking about as he addressed the monkey
I Love Candles
1:19 what is on the grave? Is that the Phantom's jacket???
I think so
For everyone who says Chirstine should've been with the Phantom/Erik instead.. (Not to be that person my myself wanted her to be with Erik) This book/movie is suppose to be tragic like 'Whyy?! Why didn't go with Erik?!' And ect. BUT THE FEELSSSSSS ON THIS!! Lol thank you and goodnight!
1:38 so beautiful
Look guys, if you watched the movie there's no reason why you shouldn't understand everything in this scene
AND I LOVE IT.
please someone tell me who is the old man? i never get his name! is he raoul??
Yep
oh really? hm...
Yea raoul !!!! The same actor was also made to look old af in that scene
Lone Wolf Girl its raul
Is so 😢 sad
HA IN YOUR FACE RAOUL! PHANTOM BEATCHA TO IT! HE GOT THERE BEFORE YOU! HA!
what is the name of the song
The song is titled "No One Would Listen" (by Andrew Lloyd Webber) and the solo instrument is the English Horn accompanied by a harp.
Abby O thanks
Is that Raoul in the wheelchair? o.O
the picture on the tombstone.......Was this the REAL Christine?
Well the book is made of fiction so I don't think so. Even is she was real, the tombstone is probably not kepted well by now.
1:19 What exactly is Raoul looking at?
Wazowski's Apprentice the old man who puts the monkey on there is Raoul
Wazowski's Apprentice ?????
ladymarano sg No what I mean is that he looks off in a certain direction after seeing the rose on the grave as well. What was that he was looking at?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he's looking at where him, the Phantom, and Christine fought earlier in the story. I believe Christine's father is buried there too.
You are correct. That is where the Phantom and Raoul had that swordfight earlier in the movie. I think he looks in that direction expecting to see the Phantom.
Long live the phantom and Christine and Dorothy
Dorothy is their true angel of music
After all that Christine had a great singing career until she died in 1917
