About:
Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 30th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.
Anyone else would like to actualy watch the full opera? Sounds like a fun comedy with some good soprano singing written in it.
I wouldn't mind seeing this OR Hannibal honestly. I actually looked Hannibal up to see if it was, at all, real.
Every time I watch this clip that's always my thought. I wish to just watch this performance with no phantom interruption
The piece is actually kind of a mashup of Le Nozze Di Figaro by Mozart and Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss
Ergotth the phantom of the opera is a rock opera not an opera. It is inspired by classical operas however it is not of the song the phantom of the opera is a rock song rather than a classical aria.
@@alicegoolden7499 They mean the operas that the characters get to perform (Il Muto, Hannibal, Don Juan Triumphant), not The Phantom of the Opera itself

Minnie Driver delivered such attitude as Carlotta at 2:43 when she said "Your part is silent little toad!" She got sass as an Italian opera diva XD
Yes 😂
That's me when I'm on my period to anyone who talks to me 😂
"A toad, madam? Perhaps it is you who are the toad..."
Ah. My dream role in this is to be Carlotta. She’s such a diva and she sings all the fun stuff haha
Sing Prima Donna once more!
Id love to play carlotta but im a guy 😂
@@Iwanhunt4181 Carlotta as a guy would be amazing!
Listening to this after a couple of years, I'm actually quite impressed with Carlotta and understand why the company would have been keeping her on despite her dramatics, haha... Her part ( even when she's "speaking") sits quite high all the time and this little bit from "Il Muto," whoever is supposed to have composed it, is like an echo of Mozart - and not at all easy to sing, with all those little staccato flourishes!
Inés de Erausquin Thanks for finally saying it!
Phantom was lusting Christine and in earlier versions of Phantom apparently Phantom was sleeping with Carlotta before Christine came along into the picture
In the Lloyd Webber-Joel Schumacher 2004 film version, she was played by Minnie Driver. Due to Driver's lack of experience in opera, her singing voice was dubbed by opera singerMargaret Preece, although she lent her actual voice to the song "Learn to Be Lonely" during the end credits.
Nice copy from Wikipedia :)
Its terrible singing in real life she wouldn't even be in the chorus. No idea who it is singing ...but sure its just a movie :)
The phantom is like: "DID I NOT INSTRUCTED, THAT BOX FIVE WAS TO BE KEEPT EMPTY?"
And the orchestra is all like: "Oh my, is the Phantom of The Opera. Gotta play it's personal theme, real quick..."
Mabey they wanted to apologize 🤣🤣🤣
Poor guy sitting in said box: *"oh boy"*
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You know, it's not that I don't understand that in-universe this is supposed to be a waste of Christine's talent...but the thing is, this is the perfect casting! The Countess is a spoiled brat who "struts around the stage" while "Serafimo" can only express himself through his body, which is a very fitting part for a young dancer like Christine. Switching their roles would have made no sense, it would have been awful and all the comic effect would have been lost. Erik, stop thinking with your other head!
That actually makes so much sense
Not to mention the fact that the countess has to hit notes only la carlotta can hit
Erik can't stand Christine not being the star even if the casting is already perfect
Oh shi...I never thought of it like that! Plus Carlotta's only real issue is that she uses vibrato ALL the time. Girl, calm it down a little bit. I'm pretty sure Erik wants to live through Christine to
@@HiImlizzmitchellgreat point. I always thought that the Countess suited Carlotta
I feel like the pageboy would be such a fun role to play, this scene makes me think of my high school’s theater program, like playing a tiny role but having so much fun because you’re with your best friend
it's really fun, it was great to be Christine's understudy here
Poor Carlotta, she makes me laugh

Say what you want about Gerard Butler, but his delivery of the line at 2:25 is filled with foreboding and suspense.
Michael Shipman
Agreed. Michael and Ramin were ominous too (especially Ramin), but Gerard has the best delivery of that line!
Ok, I'll say what I want to say about him, then. He can't act or sing, and he single-handedly ruined what would be a truly great film if only someone competent was cast to play his part. I have no idea why anyone in their right mind would put the role which makes or breaks this film under the responsibility of such a talentless hack. That's all I had to say.
Kah'oo'un R. M. Klein he wasn’t that bad and he didn’t ruin the movie. You’re being dramatic as fuck.
That’s all that I had to say by the way.
sazzia he honestly did. Listen to any other recording of the show and you’ll be amazed at how bad he actually is. I recommend the original cast with Michael Crawford. (His phantom is my favorite because it sounds so unearthly :))
Kendall Wilson I’ve listened to many and he was still the best one ppl just follow like sheep what ever critics say but I guess it’s “ur” opinion
I think Carlotta was way more suited to this role than Christine. Anyone else?
Yes, I agree!
To tell you the truth, yes
Christine Daaé Destler Plus, you seem to have a lot of fun playing the Pageboy role as well. 👌😂

2:26 I love how Carlotta's poodles are completely calm in the presence of the Phantom's wrath!
Minnie should've been nominated for an oscar. Absolutely brilliant
Agreed
John Nicholson
Either her or Emmy should have been nominated!
She did amazing in the role, but did everyone know that she didn't sing her parts? The only thing she sang was a song written by Webber for the movie during the credits.

2:48 What a shot. something about him leaning just behind the out-of-focus chandelier is so perfect.
The actress who plays Carlotta said in an interview she can sing but can't opera sing, so it's not her singing, but she really sold it as if she was.
I love the smile Raul gives Christine
same
Hmmm so the Opera Populaire wanted to stage a bawdy sex comedy with gender bender, that's why they needed Charlotte instead of Christine. Judging from the audience reaction, they were loving it.
Best MMORPG 2017 the gender- bender bit is quite typical of 18th century opera, which this purports to be; witness Mozart's Marriage of Figaro or later, Thomas' Mignon, both of which have pageboys played by mezzo-sopranos. In Figaro there's a very similar scene to this where the Countess and Susanna dress Cherubino (the page, ergo a girl playing a boy) as a girl, to hide him from the Count's somewhat-deserved wrath. Trust opera for that... And much earlier, men would play ALL the parts in opera, including the girls! Shakespeare's actors would have done that too.
Christine was in what was called a breeches roll. It was absolutely common for the time.
my favorite part is how the Confidante adds all the inflection to her words, like at the end of "aflame" and "shame".
Fun Fact: the woman playing the Confidante is Minnie Driver's opera singing voice
The costumes are beyond amazing
RIP Joel Schumacher. Thank you for showing your movies to the world and how well you directed them. My favorite films will always be Phantom of the Opera and The Lost Boys as it brought me joy in life. May your films live on forever you will be sadly missed. 😔
His voice! Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Makes me swoon
I love the part where carlotta sounds like a frog it makes me laugh every time
I think in the book, he somehow manages to get her to actually cough up frogs
Ashleigh Tompkins I just finished the book. He’s a ventriloquist, so he mimics Carlotta’s voice and makes it sound like she’s croaking. I thought that was a better explanation than the magic throat spray they pull in this.
Ashleigh Tompkins explain

This song is the only piece that fits Carlotta's vocals though
She was quite good as Elissa too
as a kid when I watched this movie I used to hate Carlotta's singing, but now that I've grown up I'm impressed by her singing the most out of all of them.
I actually never realized how good Carlotta was at singing

purplealchemist well it was the late 1800s

My thoughts about Il Muto is that the Phantom sought to draw a comparison between the "faithless" countess and Christine, who has to choose between the old, decrepit husband (Phantom, unattractive) and the mute lover (Raoul, attractive, but cannot sing). That Carlotta plays the countess would ruin the Phantom's scheme.
Oh my gosh you're right I never thought about that

I am so happy that happed to Carlotta.
Phamtom is so angry , but he was kind enough to wait the end of one bar.
Probably this is his policy for music‼︎ (maybe...)
2:33 man that classic 2000s wispy sound. i can’t quite remember the name of it but it’s a really good addition to his theme song considering how ghostly it sounds. wish it were implemented a little more somehow but it’s just perfect for this scene where some people still believed the phantom to be just a rumor/tale and not an actual being.
Margaret Preece who provided the singing voice of Carlotta for the film is seen here as the Confidante( female in purple in the singing trio). Fun fact: despite this featured supporting role and major singing dubbing role, Margaret was not invited to the film's premiere.
If a loud ass voice angrily booms about my seat It'd take me 0.2 seconds flat to raise my hand in confusion and just leave lol
Phantom: *"DID I NOT INSTRUCT THAT BOX 5 WAS TO BE KEPT EMPTY!?"*
Poor guy sitting in said box: "oh boy."
Christine's debut I get - beautiful song and role. But I don't get Erik trying to push this role onto her, Carlotta fits the scandalous woman so much better - attitude/persona/etc. If I were Christine, I'd appreciate his efforts trying to get my career going, but I wouldn't want to do a role like this one - at least starting out. idk maybe that's just me.

(2:25) And imagine if you're in the broadway and you're sitting in the real box 5 of the theatre
Dude who plays phantom is the least threatening voice I ever herd. In this scene he’s supposed to scare the entire audience
I think his voice is the most threatening... This guy was screaming - "this is Sparta!!!"😆and "This is the choice, this is the point of no return"....And he did it the best....
@@ingridmay66 I like the 25th anniversary more. He can at least sing opera. And I was talking specifically about him scaring the primadonna. If someone had heard something like that you wouldn’t even hear him. Because he’s whispering. But like it if you want. That’s your right
@@amandategner1314 The 25th anniversary is a concert... I know some people prefer the musical version because it's with well- trained singers. It's a live show and they need to be experienced and perfect. Singing on stage is always more powerful and dramatic. The 2004 movie is the more realistic version of the story with the characters. The phantom has been living under the opera house for years and years and he probably only got to observe the other opera singers, he had no teacher. If you think about what his character has gone through, and the fact that this genius person was able to learn all the things he learned on his own, including singing, then his voice is very suitable for the film. Sir Webber casted someone with a raw untamed voice to be Phantom because that's realistic given his backstory and how he grew up. Andrew himself said he wanted to have a different type of phantom. Gerard Butler has an amazing voice, but he is an actor first.
By the way, Some may not know that voice styles like Michael Crawford (his voice was soft and not threatening) and Ramin Karimloo were not Andrew Webber's initial vision of the Phantom. In fact, Steve Harley was the initial prime candidate for the role of the Phantom.😆
@@ingridmay66 oh yeah. I have heard Crawfords performance. I loved it… and as much as I agree. Michel was not a good phantom for his voice. More for his range like in the all I ask of you reprise. He holds the note in 10 seconds. 25th version held it in 6 because he didn’t breath before doing it. Butler only held it in 4. And he’s called Angel of music so he needs some more. I have listen to the 2004 soundtrack. He amazing. I just wish they worked on his tone/ volume and range. Thanks for making me listen to it By the way. He was good in point of no return.🤗
