1:06 Apparently they directed Harley to sing as if he's on the verge of a massive stroke. Either that, or someone is inside him controlling him with levers. Nothing else on the planet can explain that performance.
So basically, 1. Christine sounds beautiful but forgot how to blink 2. The Phantom looks and sounds like a gerbil 3. Raoul has a dead animal on his head 4. The Phantom has a... Bread knife?
Id be honest here, this version has something that the modern be version doesn't have, and im not talking about it being "bad or good", the vibe this gives is just indescribable.
I like how this version it seems like the phantom is brainwashing her unlike in the modern version where it seems like Christine is just too religious and though the phantom was an angel send by her dead dad I like the first scene it's so nostalgic even tho I wasn't born in the 80s lol
"So you know the phantom of the opera?" "Yeah." "Imagine that, but like, Walk Like an Egyptian." "What?" "And Raoul's face is worse than the Phantom without his mask."
Are we sure Christine is not supposed to be the stalker here? I mean that phantom looks and sounds like he's being forced into doing a duet. She doesn't blink just so he doesn't get away.
Doctor Decipher this entire thing is creepy, I mean Christine is super creepy in the beginning and never blinks and during halfway in the video it looks like she’s staring into your soul, the phantom am mask is just hilarious most importantly Christine is terrifiying But I liked it I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it I liked it
Rey Menacher Seriously, I mean correct me if I'm wrong but aren't chandeliers normally held by chains? Ain't nobdy getting anywhere on a chandelier chain with a butter knife
The no blinking is not even remotely the most concerning thing about this video. Still if Christine was going for a hypnotic look I would have preferred no blinking but still being drowsy like Sierra Boggess does it. Here she is so wide eyed I find it a bit ridiculous.
This is the old lyrics version: [Christine (Sarah):] Beneath the opera house I know he's there. He's with me on the stage, He's everywhere. And when my song begins, I always find The phantom of the opera is there Inside my mind. [The phantom (Steve):] Sing once again with me Our strange duet. My power over you Grows stronger yet. You'll give your love to me For love is blind. The phantom of the opera is now Your mastermind. [Christine:] Those who have seen your face Draw back in fear; I am the mask you wear, [The phantom:] It's me they hear. [Christine / Phantom:] Your/My spirit and my/your voice In one combined The phantom of the opera is there Inside my/your mind [Choir (very, very soft):] The phantom of the opera Is there The phantom of the opera [The phantom:] Sing once again with me Our strange duet. My power over you Grows stronger yet. [Christine / Phantom:] I'll/You'll give my/your love to you/me For love is blind. The phantom of the opera is now My/Your mastermind. [The phantom (spoken):] Sing, my angel of music ... [Christine:] He's there, The phantom of the opera. [Christine starts wailing] [The phantom (spoken):] Sing ... Once again with me, our strange duet. My power over you grows stronger and stronger. Sing ... My angel of music/ Sing! Sing our strange duet - Sing! [Christine continues wailing, and keeps on wailing after every sentence the Phantom sings The phantom (spoken):] The phantom of the opera Is now your mastermind; I am here, inside your mind!
This is equally the best thing and the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. Sarah sounds *gorgeous* and then there's Harley... The 80s cringe, the snakes, the bread knife... And of course, Raoul's hair. What a gem.
It’s so easy for the hard-core fans to mock this in hindsight. Please try to remember that this was made long before Hal Prince came on board. The lyrics were the originals written by a Richard Stilgoe, again long before Charles Hart was there. At this time, it was assumed that Phantom was going to be a big old camp-fest, rather than the classic piece of beautiful theatre we now know. To compare Steve Harley to Crawford or anyone else who has been given the Prince treatment is also unfair. No, he isn’t the best singer or actor to play the role, but at the time they wanted a less subtle approach to the character than the one we now know. I honestly have no idea why Ken Russell was given the task of directing this, other then he was famous for campy romps such as The Boyfriend and Tommy, and this was how ALW envisaged the show at that time. Obviously, the genius that Hal Prince has, prevented this kind of schlitz from ever reaching the stage, but I can’t help thinking that this needed to be made to show how NOT to do the show. Please don’t judge this too harshly. Without it, Phantom may well have been a totally different animal.
The comments are talking about it being cringe, but honestly, I love this unironically. Great visual storytelling, the Phantom seems genuinely unhinged and feral, the ending is beautifully realized.
Some of the visuals are really good, yes, especially the first 30 seconds or so. After that it gets a bit weird - maybe I'm not making enough allowance for it being a music video, but goodness, 1:18 looks like someone's having a seizure (sorry). And yep, Raoul's hair and stunned-puppy expression crack me up. I actually like the lyrics! Maybe because it's fun listening to lyrics which I haven't known by heart for years, but either way, I enjoy it.
@@Julia-lk8jn I know I'm like a year late, but it's literally because it's a music video. Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford are classically trained actors. Every action is dramatic, expressive, and leaves no room for interpretation of their emotions so everyone from the nosebleeds to the front row can see and understand perfectly. It's a skill, and I love the way it looks up close, but I suppose it's entirely subjective. I am honestly surprised how many people think it's cringe. Growing up in theatre programs, directing musicals, and acting in them, all I see are really good actors who are deep in their roles. I think it's wonderful.
Straight outta the labyrinth From my lair Got a mask on my face So don't be scared. I might be disfigured But I still got flair Cuz' the phantom of the opera Is always there

RIP Steve Harley, died of cancer this year of 2024, March 17th. He who would pave the way Michael Crawford to take up the mask of Phantom and make this masterpiece eternal and for other great singers to likewise take up the mask. - Say what you will of this version - it’s one of the first variants which would help create the musical we know and love. As Rome wasn’t built in a day, so Phantom wasn’t written perfectly; I hold this version dear especially knowing this has an unheard of, underrated, and forgotten Phantom. RIP Steve Harley

What's not to love about this insane video for "Phantom"? It's in the category of "I hate it so much that I love it"! The picture and audio quality on this is amazing. 1) The synthesizers and the guitar power chords! Would make any 80's hair-metal band proud! 2) Raoul's mullet! Stolen from Daryl Hall. 3) The heavily made-up (female) twins with Slash hair. Why are they there? 4) Very well sung by Sarah Brightman... but once we get to the Phantom... another story. 5) Horribly sung by Steve Harley (of Cockney Rebel) wearing a Mordred mask from the 1981 movie "Excalibur". 6) At 1:20, Harley's fist jerks back and forth stiffly while his body stays completely still and his feet nailed in place. Exactly like an early Disneyland animatronic's range of movement. Think "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln". 7) at 3:18, Sarah's wide, unblinking eyes and all that eye makeup is reminiscent of the eye clamps on Malcolm McDowell in "A Clockwork Orange". 8) 3:35 What's the conductor for? This video has rock instrumentation, not an orchestra. 9) 3:46 Another Daryl Hall moment. 10) 3:51-3:58 Wonderful scenes where the Phantom is jealously skulking behind the curtains and zooms in on Raoul. Looks up at the chandelier and you can see the cartoon lightbulb going on above his head. "Ah Hah! I'll kill Raoul!" 11) The Phantom takes forever to carve through the chandelier's rope with a butter knife. Not a bread knife. If he used a bread knife, he would have cut through much faster. 12) Implied that the chandelier kills Raoul (???) 13) The video ends in Sarah's shriek and a screenful of animated blood. What happened? How can we find out? Do we need to buy tickets to the upcoming "Phantom of the Opera" show?
6) him appearing slightly uncanny is a deliberate choice, adds to the overall feeling of unreality it's going for, like she's drugged by his powers 8) time has passed, she's singing on stage, and his voice remains in her head, his thrall over her is powerful enough that it haunts her whenever she sings 12) not implied, that guy is dead, a chandelier falling on you is not a survivable injury 13) the song is about the woman giving up her literal sanity for the ability to sing better than anyone ever, and she pays the price for her tuition with a terrible tragedy what happened is evident, this is not canon to the musical, it is its own story. raoul is dead and the phantom has claimed this woman's soul for satan

Ah damn it, and here I thought we did a good job on the lever and pulley system with him.
Oh well, back to the drawing board...
He looks like a malfunctioning animatronic.
“My power over youyouyouyou-“
JKolman1179 😂
JKolman1179 he sounds like that disabled kid from South Park. Little Jimmy? Little Timmy?
JKolman1179 The BEST comment I’ve ever seen!!!
So basically,
1. Christine sounds beautiful but forgot how to blink
2. The Phantom looks and sounds like a gerbil
3. Raoul has a dead animal on his head
4. The Phantom has a... Bread knife?
Lol yes, a bread knife, bread is popular in that opera house 😏🤣🤣flatly: sing my angel of music
Accurate!
Butter knife?
Cringe
lol forgot to blink
You never realize how dead eyed Brightman looks until she’s staring straight in to your soul
•Chickens8 • I KNOW IT CREEPY AS F
Madison Haynes OK IM NOT ALONE IN THIS! She can sing ok, but she’s a crap actress
It's almost Alexandra Daddario levels.
😂😂😂😂
Look up “sanpaku.” Case closed.
2:51 omg The phantom’s giant cape on a stick so he can swing it in front of the camera😂
Pretty sure they stole it from Tim Curry's character in The Worst Witch.
Gosh how big is that cape
That cape can shade my whole house tho 🤣
Avy So Freaking Boring lol
Juz4Fun Vid It’s not even a cape at this point it’s a fricking sheet
Director: How big do you want the cape to be, Andrew?
Andrew Lloyd Webber: Yes.
I wonder if that cape gave Michael Crawford the idea to do Condorman.
Id be honest here, this version has something that the modern be version doesn't have, and im not talking about it being "bad or good", the vibe this gives is just indescribable.
agree
That fever dream energy? Why that’ll be the drugs of the 80’s m’boy
I like how this version it seems like the phantom is brainwashing her unlike in the modern version where it seems like Christine is just too religious and though the phantom was an angel send by her dead dad I like the first scene it's so nostalgic even tho I wasn't born in the 80s lol
Correct. Sometimes hitting all the right notes is the wrong way to perform it. There's definitely a vibe here that is lost in modern performances.
Tbh the vibe is because of the videos director Ken Russell. He also directed Tommy
Ok so everybody is talking about the butter knife, but CAN WE TALK ABOUT ERIK’S BATMAN STYLE CAPE AND HOW STUPID IT LOOKS I LOVE IT
Honestly, I think Erik's cape looked kinda like Dracula's.
I loose it everytime at the cape 🤣
It makes me think of tuxedo mask.
That cape is the best thing about him! It's not stupid at all. I love a long cape on a guy, no matter the setting.
RIP Steve Harley. This video was the first exposure I ever had to what would eventually become my favorite musical.
"So you know the phantom of the opera?"
"Yeah."
"Imagine that, but like, Walk Like an Egyptian."
"What?"
"And Raoul's face is worse than the Phantom without his mask."
Raoul’s face???
I just laughed way too hard at this comment
HELP HAHAHAHHAHAA
YEESSS
Pretty sure Raoul and the phantom are the same guy
Are we sure Christine is not supposed to be the stalker here? I mean that phantom looks and sounds like he's being forced into doing a duet. She doesn't blink just so he doesn't get away.
That would be a pretty nice remake. I want to see Christine as a yandere who forces phantom into loving her
Plus she willingly went down there and put the wedding dress on
niki irulan that's probably honestly a better fanfic that LND.
Doctor Decipher this entire thing is creepy, I mean Christine is super creepy in the beginning and never blinks and during halfway in the video it looks like she’s staring into your soul, the phantom am mask is just hilarious most importantly Christine is terrifiying
But I liked it I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it I liked it
Tia Fakhouri - I think it’s supposed to portray the Phantom being in her mind? I don’t know.
This comment section is literally comedy gold, I could read it for days
That’s theater kids for ya! 🙂
This is so 80s it's almost an art
Im sorry but i laughed real hard at his first few lines, he sounded like he was forced into this lol
LK Blondie Me too I can't resist it 😂😂😂
LK Blondie I laughed when the chandelier was getting cut down by a bread knife
@@Love.Ruby. lmao 😂 yeah me too
all good- I don't think there is a single fan of the musical who isn't laughing at this monstrosity.
Rey Menacher Seriously, I mean correct me if I'm wrong but aren't chandeliers normally held by chains? Ain't nobdy getting anywhere on a chandelier chain with a butter knife
I personally find the no blinking amazing... After all she is supposed to be under some type of hypnosis
Thanks for your loves and support you've shown towards me. where are you watching from?
@@andrewlloydwebber6765 California USA :)
And her eyes are mesmerizing
The no blinking is not even remotely the most concerning thing about this video. Still if Christine was going for a hypnotic look I would have preferred no blinking but still being drowsy like Sierra Boggess does it. Here she is so wide eyed I find it a bit ridiculous.
@@victoriaanne6332 she already have huge round shaped eyes. When you have such eyes, opening up makes them go bigger than any other shape of eyes.

He's everywhere.

Steve Harley has passed away today (17th March 2024)… RIP you glam rock phantom! Nobody could have done this version of the song better!
This IS the definitive version imo. I loved Steve Harley in this
I loved him so so much.
What. No...
Very sorry to know that. 😞
Multi-talented indeed.
‘Crazy eyes’ Brightman!

In sleep she stared at me, in dreams she came

This is equally the best thing and the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. Sarah sounds *gorgeous* and then there's Harley... The 80s cringe, the snakes, the bread knife... And of course, Raoul's hair. What a gem.
Glinda Bennett agreed
Listen to nightwish cover
What did you expect? its a music video
*In the 80's*
But the phantom's singing voice here is horrendous, or at least lackluster, compared to today's renditions of the same character

ANDREW HOLTON Ken Russell directed this?
It all makes perfect sense now.
I love hidden gems like these in the comments section. 👌 Thanks for being awesome, ya nerd. :)
Webber himself stated he wanted this video to be extremely over the top, to hype the musical
I was wondering when the changes got mad between this and the show! Thank you for the insight.
So this was simply a music video they made before it went to stage?
The Phantom sounds like he needs to sneeze but he has to hold it in.

Come on, man.. what's wrong with a mullet?
@@ericdillon1169,
Nothing. Unless you want an early death. :D
Maybe because it's fun listening to lyrics which I haven't known by heart for years, but either way, I enjoy it.
big "labyrinth" 80s camp vibes
I think it's wonderful.
yo i actually love the line "you'll give your love to me, for love is blind"

Say what you will of this version - it’s one of the first variants which would help create the musical we know and love.
As Rome wasn’t built in a day, so Phantom wasn’t written perfectly; I hold this version dear especially knowing this has an unheard of, underrated, and forgotten Phantom.

"Ah Hah! I'll kill Raoul!"
11) The Phantom takes forever to carve through the chandelier's rope with a butter knife. Not a bread knife. If he used a bread knife, he would have cut through much faster.
12) Implied that the chandelier kills Raoul (???)
13) The video ends in Sarah's shriek and a screenful of animated blood. What happened? How can we find out? Do we need to buy tickets to the upcoming "Phantom of the Opera" show?
6) him appearing slightly uncanny is a deliberate choice, adds to the overall feeling of unreality it's going for, like she's drugged by his powers
8) time has passed, she's singing on stage, and his voice remains in her head, his thrall over her is powerful enough that it haunts her whenever she sings
12) not implied, that guy is dead, a chandelier falling on you is not a survivable injury
13) the song is about the woman giving up her literal sanity for the ability to sing better than anyone ever, and she pays the price for her tuition with a terrible tragedy
what happened is evident, this is not canon to the musical, it is its own story. raoul is dead and the phantom has claimed this woman's soul for satan
