I’m a first gen Dominican born in the U.S. and moved to D.R. with my family 25 years ago. We raised our children here and were able to give them much better quality of life. I don’t regret it for a second. Coming “home” was the best decision we ever made.
I love hearing about people who relocate here and have such a positive experience. Your daughter is adorable and so poised. Blessings to your family. Thank you for sharing your story.

Absolutely, the quality of life for kids is awesome here. Lately, I've heard many Dominicans that would love to do the same and move back to the island but can't. So yes it's been a blessing to be able to bring my wife back home. She's loving it here. You're welcome

Thts awesome... my husband wants to retire there, but I personally do not want to live there.
We all respect, I know a family that bought a built a house there, furnished it n then moved n on second week got rob n killed. What part of DR u live in? Are there English schools? I would need to be in a near a good hospital for treatment of my medical problem. I also live in Florida. You guys give me courage to move there. Also my husband is from there too. I'm not im from PR. Your baby girl is beautiful.

@@marimar9133 Sorry to hear about that family but it sounds like an isolated incident verses you living in Florida and it's riddled with crime all year especially in the Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Jacksonville areas. DR is 1000% safer that any major city in the US. There is no debate about it. I live in Santo Domingo. When you get the courage you'll see the quality of life here is better.

Jay, I am African and most of us love parables. The apple does not fall far from the tree. What an awesome job raising your daughter. She looks so composed and mature. One of the primary reasons immigrants start looking to returning to their homelands as they grow older is precisely due to your daughter's observation - people are just generally nicer overseas. My son is Dominican. When he came to the United States, specifically Philadelphia Pennsylvania, he spoke very little English. I attributed that to attending school with mostly Spanish speakers. A year after moving to Montgomery Alabama, my son Angelo speaks English about 90 percent. He has picked up English colloquialisms, and he understands what them mean. My wife’s English has approved immensely. We have a toddler and my wife speaks Spanish to him and I encourage that. My wife and my son Angelo but received their 10 year permanent residence card. I told my wife 5 years she must complete her nursing school because I want to move to the Dominican Republic 6 months out of the year. I love the Dominican Republic. My Spanish is about 30 percent.

@JayAbroad The reason I bring up this topic is because on many occasions, when people learn that I am Dominican, they ask me if people of color in my country are less valued because of their skin color. Others also ask about the situation between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Normally, I explain to them that things are not the way the media portrays them, and that in the Dominican Republic, people of our skin color make up the majority, so this is not even an issue within the country. I grew up going to school with 👨🏿‍🦱 classmates and Haitian teachers, and we still maintain friendships to this day. 🇩🇴❤️🇭🇹

Brother, I know why you asked and its a fair question. Obviously you know I don't feel the same way as the people who ask you these questions. Keep in mind these people who ask these question majority don't want to hear the answer. They already have in their mind what they believe. They are being disingenuous. They are looking to disagree not to understand. I'm not about to waste my time arguing with a bunch of avatars with letters about these topics. Remember, when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. And a lot of these people are consumed with racism because its engrained in American culture so everything they look at it's thru a racial lens. I was once the same way until I came here and traveled other places to understand not everyone looks at race the same. I personally wouldn't waste any energy trying to convince anyone of something they've already made up their mind to believe.

This is so inspiring!! I’m from Montgomery al and have outgrown this place. Crime is getting worse here on a daily. Lost my brother to gun violence here last year and I just don’t want to live here anymore. My son is 5 and knows a little Spanish from playing the Spanish learning game on his tablet. I purposely intended on him starting to learn Spanish because I know that one day I want to expose him to different cultures/places, particularly outside of the country, which is something I've never had the chance to experience. He was diagnosed with Autism and the school system here is not well equipped for kids like him. I was just talking to his dad about how I want him to completely learn Spanish and get him a passport so that we can travel out of the country together. We already have our passports. I just need to get one for my son. I want so much more for my son & us. I've always wanted to live a non traditional life/do something bold and was always different. Your daughter is beautiful & I enjoyed hearing her speak about her experience with moving outside of the country. I can tell that she loves it there! Thanks for inspiring me!

My sister lives in Montgomery. My family is from and lives in Mobile. I understand what you are saying. Raising my daughter in a different environment was one of the top reason why I left. I did not want her to be exposed to the lifestyle American are exposed to especially as a child. I love that all the little girls here look like her where she doesn't have to feel a certain way. It's safe for kids to play outside, go to their neighbors homes. This is the type of environment I grew up in in the 80s. We love it here.

It’s turned into Memphis Jr at this point. And that’s great! To compare the environment you all are living in to the 80s says a lot! I’m a 90s baby and remember how things were so much before even at that time! And that’s so great. It sounds like you really don’t have do deal with any type of racism down there…..which is another big problem in our country, especially in many parts of Alabama as you know. Keep doing what yall are doing. You & your wife are doing such a great job with your daughter. ❤️

Aww! I love this! She’s so sweet. My 5 year old granddaughter came with us last summer to SD. I was there for 2 weeks, they stayed for about a month. She told us that she wants to celebrate her bday in SD in June ❤ She goes to an all Spanish speaking school so all of her subjects as well as aftercare is in Spanish. At home we listen to a lot of Bachata and other Spanish music and we speak to her in Spanish. Kids catch on so fast.

Totally agree! In fact scientific study have shown that KIDS up to let's say 18 years are MENTALLY WIRED to relatively EASY pick up up to SEVEN(7) languages at 'SEMI-NATIVE ' level. On the other hand, the PARENTS having past the age of 25 ALMOST NEVER reach the kind of MENTAL FLUENCY. That is: being able TO THINK in that 2nd or 3d language. In fact: the SLIGHTEST difficulty induces the ADULT to take refuge in the FIRST LANGUAGE in stead of confronting the difficulty head on! So, the challenge for an ADULT is NOT: to speak in the 2nd language...but.....TO FORCE YOURSELF TO CONTINUE TO THINK IN THAT 2nd LANGUAGE!
