For a while, I have been thinking about emigrating to Porto, Portugal on the D7 visa but I think that Montevideo, Uruguay is going to be my final decision.
I have some health care in Thailand comments. This morning I had a kidney stone attack (not my first). I went to emergency room at a private hospital, spoke to an English speaking doctor, got pain meds, slept a couple of hours, and got some meds to take home. The out of pocket expenses, no insurance, was $52. In Bangkok I’ve made next day appointments myself for an oral surgeon and a dermatologist at a private hospital resulting in bills of about $100. I spent 3 days/2 nights in a private room in a private hospital for $550.
Single mom of 2 here and I live in Thailand. I've been here about 2 years and it's amazing. It's everything you mentioned and more. Don't forget about the affordable self care and healing modalities. 🙂
@respectfullynikki I also have a single mom and now doing my research to hopefully transition to move next year am I able to reach out to you for questions?
Was just in Thailand met the brother there Bernard who spoke very highly of your family and gave me a short version of your family journey and stated you guys had just left much respect,he himself and family just moved from Portugal. I was there primarily getting my teeth done 10/10. By the way he had just enrolled his 2 small children in school in Bangkok. May you continue to inspire and bless.
I just spent two weeks in Thailand from June 29 to July 14. I went to Bangkok, Krabi, Phuket and Karta. The MASSAGES are amazing, the food is cheap and so good and 90% of the hotels I stayed in were amazing. Bangkok is like NYC there’s crime. You didn’t mention the night life and the ‘ladyboys’ I encountered a brief episode of racism while I was here. Traveling single and a Black female my experience was a little different. I also find some areas of Thailand very polluted with plastic waste everywhere. I had an amazing two week stay in several locations.
So glad you are selecting Thailand as one of your home. Thailand is my homeland while I am now living in USA. Hoping to visit very often and perhaps buying a house there. Very excited for you and I’m very jealous that I have to wait 2 years to do that. Enjoy. Keep the videos coming. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Amon. I'm also an early retiree. I left the workforce last year in early October 2023. I was also a Federal Employee, but in San Diego. I did purchase one of your programs around 4 years ago, and used it as a guide. Thailand and Portugal were places I was looking at. In fact, I thought about doing what you talked about. Have a place in Thailand and Portugal. I'm still living in CA at the moment because I'm fixing up a property. I'm almost done though and soon it'll be on the market.
Omg, we are going to Thailand next week. My husband love Huahin because it is quiet. Our plan is to live in Thailand for 2-3 months when it cold here in the US and traveling the world some month. We won’t wait 20 to enjoy life. I will be so delighted if I ran in to you both somewhere in Thailand. Excited for the food there.
I saw a video of an expat in Thailand that went to the dentist. His dentist office looked like a spa resort!! The prices for major dental work was so cheap that you can easily pay out of pocket with no issues on a $1000-$2500 monthly budget!! You are so right Amond.
Wow that’s amazing! English speaking I assume… Bangkok? Could you pls. share a referral for us to check out? It would probably still be affordable even with a flight!
Whoever dates their daughters have some big shoes to fill. Having that strong two parent household is one thing, but to watch their dad work with their mom to live a dream sets the standard!
What a fantastic standard that all of us should have. Wait, we do! Thanks Christina & Amon for doing the hard work of making yourself visible & sharing FI/FIRE with us 💕You make it look easy. Thank you 💯🦋
Im miving to Thailand in December 😊😊 but Chiang Mai is much more my vibe than Bangkok. Beautiful place. The new DTV visa is unbelievable. Incredible opportunity. Heres to our new home!!! 🍻🥂
🎉 The timing of this video is everything! My wife and 8 y/o son are currently in Bangkok trying to answer the key points you’ve outlined in this video. We’ve been here since mid-June! We’d love to see more videos on the school options, neighborhoods and/or house tours in Bangkok.
Great video as always. In a future video can you talk about what the requirements are to get into Thailand (and Portugal) perhaps a comparison. Income needs/requirements, required vaccines if any, best ways to locate apartments or homes either buying or renting, length of time allowed to stay before needing to pursue some form of citizenship etc. Best banks to use for ease of accessing funds if you have a US based bank
You studied at Thammasat University, one of the best universities in Thailand. You probably know the area. I recommend an area for living on Sai Mai Road, convenient travel, easy connection to City ( BTS Green Line ). The cost of living is cheaper than in the city. There is a large hospital. There is a night market called save one go. The food is diverse. And a fresh market called AC Saimai, consider it.
We were in Thailand a few years ago and every time we left our hotel in Bangkok about 30 minutes later I would feel ill. We figured out it was due to the pollution and I have asthma so I guess not for me.
I started following your family during Covid and made a decision that I was going to visit Portugal if I survived 😂. Well in Jan 2023, I manifested a paid trip to Portugal. Visited several cities in Portugal and have been going out of the country at least 2-3 times a year since then. I was already thinking about Thailand and here comes this video 😊 Its a sign❤
I’m from Thailand and I am living in Portugal. Thailand has more to offer when it comes to entertainment, food, culture and economically. But I prefer to live in Portugal. The number one reason is the Safety the other reasons are; no traffic, no pollution, the weather is much much better, politically more stable, more peaceful and slower-paced. Of course I do love my country, but I would rather go there on vacation than living there.
Im Portuguese… and i live in Thailand… how is it even possible that you can say the weather is better?? It is def not more peaceful how is it even possible to say that? Portuguese are about to implement the biggest ban on tourists becauuse the locals dont want foreigners due to the housing prices.
Love this video!❤️ Thailand is on my list as one of the places to visit. I heard it's really nice and the fact that you guys are considering moving there reinforces that opinion. As you spend time there, I would like to see housing tours, interviews with expats, and more information about health care costs. Thanks again Our Rich Journey! You always inspire me. Enjoy your time in Thailand. 😊
Hi Amon and Christina, Thank you for the awesome content and inspiration you provide! One of the challenges I’ve had a hard time finding a solution to for financial independence and moving abroad is the how to keep a US based stock market brokerage account without the brokerage closing or restricting the account if I’m no longer a US resident. I’ve read that this can be a common problem for investors who move abroad, but I’ve seen successful investors like you live abroad full time and maintain your US brokerage accounts. I’ve read a lot of financial articles about this and lots of comments on expat forums, but having a hard time figuring out how I can accomplish this. If you would consider making a video about how to overcome this challenge I would be so grateful! Thank you both for helping so many of us on our journeys!
That is not a problem, except for the hour differences. What will be a problem for sure in all coming years is the USD's decline in purchasing power. I doubt it will be worth even half of what it is today.
We took our family throughout Asia for 6 months last year and you're right. Thai folks are super friendly and we felt very safe there. We're actually returning this fall again and will be there for the Chiang mai lantern festival
I’ve been watching and learning from your channel a lot and knowing that you’re considering my home country as your second home makes me so happy. I’ve live in the US for 10 years and there isn’t a day goes by I don’t miss my country and I would move back in a heartbeat when I am able to…and you are so right when you mentioned that they’ll never understand until they visit Thailand….tho the cost of living in Bangkok is still high comparing to other parts of Thailand, but still very cheap and affordable when you have US dollar to spend. I don’t need to sell you as to why you should move to Thailand, you just hit the nail on the head on everything.
I achieved FIRE and moved to Thailand from US this spring. I too debated between Portugal and Thailand and ended up choosing Thailand for many reasons. The biggest turn off about Portugal was a rising housing cost. I totally recommend Thailand for anyone in a heartbeat!
I went to Phuket in April which was my first time in Thailand. I LOVED it! The people, the food, everything. To the point where I started researching moving there. I may even still research living there full time. I've mentioned I write comics. I even found a studio to work with in Bangkok so that would be a plus. I meant to ask you this. I know you said your dad has been in Tokyo for 15 years. Has he ever learned the language? I took it in high school for 2 years
Slow down Amon, I’m still trying to get to Portugal 😀 will add Thailand onto the list! Hello from North East of England, we love your Channel, I’ll carry on investing 👍
This video is SO helpful! I am strongly considering leaving everything in my US life behind and relocating to Thailand so that I can save and take better care of my health. Could you please do a video on approximate overall cost to make a complete relocation to Thailand from the US? Including visa/immigration costs, flights, and simple accommodation? TYIA! I’m such a fan of you all and your beautiful family 😊
Enjoyed the video could you provide more information on the housing and what people do for fun in Bangkok. Thanks and best wishes to you and Christina and your beautiful family. 😊
Awesome ! We went to Thailand for our honeymoon and loved it. Any other countries you have found with similarities I'm regards to cost of living/affordability, housing, Healthcare, food, etc ?
I am a single mother thinking of moving either to Portugal or Thailand. It would be great to do a comparison video of both countries. My son is in primary school so it would be great to have a video showing the options for the international schools in Thailand. I enjoy watching your videos and will aim to join FIRE very soon!
Love your channel and your content! Since I found your channel I have been binge watching! So inspiring and love your energy and passion! How does Chiang mai. compare to Bangkok
With the easing of visa restrictions, we are also considering a move to Thailand. An idea for a future video from Thailand: Pros and Cons of living in Bangkok or Chiang Mai? Thank you.
I've been doing that for a few years now. I live in Portugal and spend the fall and winters in Southeast Asia. I've narrowed my choices down to Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. It'll depend on the best immigration policies.
I'm from Portugal and have been living in the USA for 24 years. But I don't blame u for wanting to move to Thailand because it's a beautiful place, I love Thai food, the cost of living is extremely cheap and the women from Thailand are insanely beautiful. I can say that as I'm single LOL but yeah I would definitely pick Thailand myself as there's soo much about Thailand that I like.
I loved seeing you hanging out with our great friend, B. I’ve been following you and Christina from the start of your UA-cam journey and always felt like you all are the type of people we could hangout with. Seeing you refer to one of our great friends as a good friend of yours just confirms that you all are really great people. Hopefully our paths will soon cross ❤
Question: We are thinking of move to Thailand as well. As an Ex-pat you can not buy land( unless you merry a Thai) there in the kingdom of Thailand. Are you guys planning on purchasing a condo, renting, getting with an investor to buy, or something else? Thanks for your time.
Thailand is influenced by Buddhism culture, any countries with this culture the people are humble as you know Buddhism practice is being compassionate, kind, etc.
I love the freedom that financial independence provides. Thank you for inspiring so many of us! I always knew FIRE was possible, people thought I was crazy..lol. What about the tsunamis? Is that a concern that you all have considered.
Hi Guys, please talk about the following: 50+ visa process and benefits, crime, safety, government stability, buying property (apartments/houses), quality of life re: weather, pollution and cleanliness of Bangkok, cultural activities and of course the Black Expat community. Thank you for this video. It's a good introduction to Bangkok for me. 🥰
Been in Asia most of the last 16 years. I love Portugal. But Thailand has been our favorite in Asia. Though I would like some good nature and mountain biking in the states.
That's awesome! So happy to see your ideas❤! Thank you so much for sharing your journey and letting us know that if you could do it, we could do it too! We love south east Asia, it's amazing. Have you checked out Malaysia, really cool too!
AMAZING VIDEO!! thank you so much for sharing all this info, analysis and your strategy! God at the end of the video I wanted to move to Thialand! I hope the next step truly does bring you there!! so I can continue to follow your adventures! I 100% agree about FIRE being about "freedom". TOTALLY! You all are truly living life! how wonderful! Sending you white light from sunny NY! Big hugs. Viv :)
We are trying to answer that question at this time. Our kids are grown with their own lives. My husband retired last year and now we are thinking about spending time in South America and NYC. I enjoyed spending time outside of NY but I do miss home. The cost of living is pretty low in South America we can live on about 1500 to 2500 very lavishly. Going out to eat, buying groceries and keeping the housing expense.
Great video and really appreciate the timely share. Thailand has so many positives going for it. It's #1-2 on my list for retirement. Especially with their affordable VISA programs. Enjoy!!
Nice video. But as someone who deals with the oppressive humidity for three months every year in Japan, I couldn't handle six months of the same in Thailand. Plus when we were there, we saw too many rats and cockroaches for our liking in Bangkok. Finally, I would worry about the protection of human rights in that country. Especially for women and minorities.
Thanks 🙏 Are you looking into other areas besides Bangkok? Please let us know more about Visas and health care…thinking of moving there. All best wishes for your lovely family 🌻
Thailand is just a vacation hot spot for me. I've been there twice ( Bangkok, Chang Mai and Chang Dao) and on the second time around I didn't enjoy much at all. The heat and humidity was way too much, combined with the horrendous traffic and pollution. Also we wanted to explore street food and some local restaurants and the hygiene was a bit concerned of mine after my husband got sick eating from one vendor on our first time around in Bangkok's Chinatown. The culture shock is something that one needs to take in consideration as well. Chang Dao was lovely though! Chiang Mai - we stayed in Downtown with a group of friends. I am sure that the quieter areas must be lovely.
Chiang Mai is amazing cultural city you should try. Half the price of BKK too. The food is amazing in Thailand! If you can eat spicy food that's 75pc of their cuisine
Omg! I absolutely LOVE Thailand! I went there for a month for work (military) and loved it so much I had to go back and bring my mom with me 😂. It is a dream of mine to move there! How smooth/easy is it to immigrate there as an American?
Travel to Funchal Madeira one time you will not regret, it’s part of portugal but subtropical weather in the capital , in the winter during day time its around 19-21 degree celcius in Funchal. On an island the size of Singapore you can actually find many different climate zones from mediterranen to subtropical to temperate and desert. Enjoying your show
Hi Amon and Christina! What a timely video. Though I currently live in South Korea, I've been thinking about making Thailand a 2nd (or maybe even a 1st) home. I went on my first scouting trip last December/January and I plan to visit again in a couple months. I love living in Asia and I'm feeling a very strong pull to Thailand. Who knows, we may meet again in Thailand some day 🙂
I love what you guys are doing for your community!! Yes, if you have the time please share information on healthcare, how to transition as a healthcare professional, and the school system ( private/Montessori style if they offer it. Thank you so much!
Hello, good to hear that you interested in my country. I have followed your channel for a while. If you have any questions about Bangkok, feel free to ask.
F.I.R.E,., FREEDOM, CHOICE ❤❤❤I love how absolutely strategic you guys are. That's a skill to be cultivated. Yes to Home tours. Apt tours. enJOY! 💯🔥👌🏾Thx for sharing Amon & Christina.
We visited Thailand last year in March. Everything you talked about is true and we loved the country, but...we were there at the pick of the smoky season and that was really bad...and so was in Vietnam. I haven't seen the air that bad anywhere else!
I’ve had 2 friends move to Thailand. One passed away in a suspected murder while living in a wealthy neighborhood and the other was robbed/beaten in his first month. I would be very skeptical of what you hear about Thailand from ppl that are currently there. Thailand at face value seems amazing, but is built on a house of cards. The instability in that country is alarming but not obvious to the naked eye. Be careful.
True I was out there a couple years ago. Some Thai guys tried to beat me & my homie up. They were hating b/c we had some very attractive women in our section, but after they seen 2 guys weren’t scared of the 6 of them & was down for whatever they let it go but they were following us for a little while after we left the club but the chicks helped us lose them on the way back to the hotel. Other than that Thailand was a cool spot.
Millions of people settle/travel in Thailand and the cases you mentioned are rare indeed. It's one of the safest countries around. Visit before judging.
Welcome back to Thailand. After almost two years in Portugal, my husband and I moved here to Bangkok and are so happy with our decision. Wishing you and your family all the best!😃
Great sharing! Have you evaluated the WT (worldwide tax policy) that might be implemented soon in Thailand, for people who can’t live for just 6 months this might be an issue
Great video! As a viewer from Oakland, Ca your family’s channel is an inspiration! Love Thailand! And while you’re in SE Asia consider visiting my parents home country of Laos! Just an hour flight from Bangkok.

@martypoll Could you say the name of the private hospital you went to please? Thank you
Which hospital you recommend for a medical checkup?
Bumrungrad Hospital
Bangkok Hospital
Samitivej Hospital
Can barely get that in canada
what about if you have preexisting conditions? and I mean serious preexisting conditions

I have kids too and also considering Thailand but never saw a family video until now
@respectfullynikki I also have a single mom and now doing my research to hopefully transition to move next year am I able to reach out to you for questions?
How old were your kids when you moved there? And how was the the schools?
So glad you're here 😃 I've been living in Thailand for over 4 years and without watching this entire video, I can tell you the answer is "Yes!"
The timing of this video is divine 😂 I was just doing deep research on moving to Thailand. I’ll take this as a good sign. Thank you Amon!
Me too and I thought the same thing when this came up.
Me too and I personally would love as many videos from these two as possible
Def good sign - as a US Expat here in Thailand 10+ yrs do the research and if possible a visit to get a sense of what Thailand can offer. Yesha
Check South America. Much better
I'm in Thailand now! Come check it out!

All your points are 💯 valid! I've lived here in 🇹🇭 for 7yrs. Thailand is truly Amazing!
I am a single mother thinking of moving either to Portugal or Thailand. It would be great to do a comparison video of both countries. My son is in primary school so it would be great to have a video showing the options for the international schools in Thailand. I enjoy watching your videos and will aim to join FIRE very soon!
I agree! That would be a great video. I’d love a comparison as well.
International schools in Thailand start at 100,000 baht
Love your channel and your content! Since I found your channel I have been binge watching! So inspiring and love your energy and passion! How does Chiang mai. compare to Bangkok
Aww! Thank you so much! We really appreciate that you watch our videos and comment! Thank you!!!
Thanks Amon for providing. I am planning to relocate there in September.
Love to have you in Thailand. I am a Thai American living in California. We plan to semi retire in Thailand back-and-forth.
Love it! Our daughter has been there, and we will have to put Thailand on our list. We are headed to Malaysia in September.
Please share some healthcare information. I left Bangkok last week and am now in Pattaya. Getting to know all the regions and where best to settle.
They might practice Buddhism at morning, but at night it is the largest ladyboys gathering in Asia. 😂
No it's not the Buddhism culture.. But rather oriental culture who are all very friendly and patient unlike the secular capitalist nations
China is traditionally a Buddhist country...
I already have your kind of 2nd home in Vietnam and my 2nd home in Portugal. 😂 Thanks to you, I made my move very swiftly at the beginning of covid.
Thanks for this video. I'm also considering living abroad and this has given me food for thought! Keep up the great work guys!!!
THAILAND any time any day!!!
I stay in Bangkok city Centre Sukhumvit 26 and my office is next to the cooking school. And I am a member of your course. Hope you move to Bangkok
Thank you for sharing your adventures in Thailand
Actually, will be there myself soon. Enjoy your time. Stay blessed.
❤ these have been my 1 and 2 for the longest now! Thanks for sharing
Very Cool. Such an inspiration story for your family. Loving the dream and it’s amazing to see that dream in action
Chiang Mai is amazing cultural city you should try. Half the price of BKK too. The food is amazing in Thailand! If you can eat spicy food that's 75pc of their cuisine
I moved to Cebu, Philippines. That’s the move and so many people who look like us here 🤚🏾
Cebu suck ! Not well developed, except IT Park. I know because I stayed for 3 months.
Philippines not well developed.
Sorry !👎🏾
Tell him about the poverty, and those scamming women!
@@charlesmassaquoi6717Lol
@@shayscott7498 thank you.
OMG!!! You guys are awesome and such an inspiration to me!
Enjoying your show
Totally resonate with all your points. It’s also very popular for location independent/digital nomad types 👍
Thailand does offer Montessori schools amazingly.
I love thailand for all the ponts you spoke about! ❤ we had our honeymoon there, and i always tell my husband that we will retire there haha!
US is much more dangerous than most places to the US.
Millions of people settle/travel in Thailand and the cases you mentioned are rare indeed. It's one of the safest countries around. Visit before judging.
Stay away from another foreigners
Thank you for the good tip! 👍
Yes please do videos of life in Thailand! Thank you.....
Thank you for sharing.
Please do some videos on healthcare and health insurance.
They actually PRACTICE medicine in Thailand, Cuba, Iran…
great informative video ., would like to know more about long term housing rentals , how to get health insurance & permanent residency status
Welcome to Thailand! Safe , Cheap , Affordable , Kindness !
Great video! As a viewer from Oakland, Ca your family’s channel is an inspiration! Love Thailand! And while you’re in SE Asia consider visiting my parents home country of Laos! Just an hour flight from Bangkok.
Leaving 6 months Portugal and 6 months Thailand is exciting !!. Do it!.
Thank you for this video my family 😊are researching places to relocate to.
I am looking forward to visiting later this year. If I like it, I would consider spending part of the year there depending on the tax situation.
Hi Amon. A very hopeful video. Thank you. Will you please do a video on gym facilities availble in Thailand . My wife and I are bodybuilders.
Thank you for choosing Thailand ❤ I’m your Thai subscriber 😊
Thank you for this video. Which hospitals have you been to in Portugal where you have received great service?
