    In every movie since Five, someone has a crazy action set piece where, in real life if a person would do it, they would not shut up about it for the entire movie. "No no no, I don't think you understand Dom. I FREAKING JUMPED OUT OF THAT BUS BEFORE IT FELL OFF THE CLIFF AND GRABBED LETTY'S CAR HANDLE BAR THING AND HOLY CRAP I ALMOST DIED--"
    But in these movies they don't even ACKNOWLEDGE that what they did was hard. They basically walk away from every crazy setpiece with a swagger that's basically them scoffing at the universe like, "Yeah, I did that. And I could do it thirty times in a row with my eyes closed. Gimme a corona"
    god i love these movies.

    After watching F9 the end of this video hits different. "Ideas for the last movies, I wanna see Tej drive a car in space. Bring Han Back" Now all we need is cars outrunning a nuclear explosion and jumping a car between two planes in the air and you pretty much wrote the last few movies. Did you get a writing credit of F9 Patrick?

  • @FreakalityWins

    Man, seriously, this is low key one of my favorite channels on UA-cam. I didn't expect to agree with everything you said here, but alas, here we are.
    I really like Tokyo Drift as well, and while I think it's the most different (and probably somewhat worse acted), I think it's probably the best, eh... movie?
    I mean, I really like Fast Five and onward on the "dumb but sincere fun and action epicness" aspect, but I quite honestly like the way Tokyo Drift is crafted as a story, which you explain really well using the Kung Fu film analogy.
    I suck at staying social online and commenting on the videos I love, but I just wanted to let you know that this channel just keeps getting better and better, and I hope to eventually make content at least half as good as what you're producing.
    Awesome video!

    • @patrickhwillems
      @patrickhwillems  7 років тому +45

      Thanks! I really appreciate it. And yeah, Tokyo Drift is like the stealth great movie in the series. It's fairly formulaic in terms of high school sports movies but it's REALLY well executed. I like it more every time I watch it. Man, Justin Lin did wonders for that series.

    • @derfman
      @derfman 7 років тому +1

      Agreed. Han is the best character.

    • @Harry-hyl
      @Harry-hyl 7 років тому +3

      It's easier for me to find weaknesses than strengths, so I'll start:
      Weaknesses: main char is rather stupid, poorly acted, learns how to drift but doesn't develop as a char, plot doesn't make much sense, races could be cooler, weak romance
      Strengths: the visuals, the setting, the colorful host of characters, HAN!, cool factor makes me feel like a kid again

    • @derfman
      @derfman 7 років тому +2

      phew, just making sure you listed Han as a pro and not a con... otherwise i would get the pitchforks ready

    • @shraka
      @shraka 6 років тому +2

      Disagree with your cons there Harry. From a car guy point of view, the races in Tokyo Drift are the best races in the franchise. They use the most technical driving, using all real cars, doing practical stunts mostly with pretty standard drift cars (other than the crashes). I also think they're pretty spectacular visually. The chases in the later movies are heaps of fun, but they've given up on any pretence of the down to earth racing you get in Tokyo Drift.
      The main character is stupid but I dunno why that's even a con? He's obviously supposed to be a bit dumb, and Lucas Black does a passable job portraying the perfect amount of Derp. Unless you mean the concept of the character is stupid, which I disagree with.
      Though yeah he doesn't develop much as a character, but he does finally get out from under his parents and I guess learns to be less of a fuck up? I guess?
      My con list: Not enough drifting! Romance has very little chemistry (agree there). Some of the writing is very clumsy, especially as delivered by Nathalie Kelley. That might have something to do with her Australian accent though (I'm Australian, hearing my accent in American movies can be very jarring for me). No callbacks or references to the Mid Night Club. There isn't a Tokyo Drift 2 (They could totally do a spin off series).
      Pros: Everything else. Keiichi Tsuchiya is in it for crying out loud!

    I always adored the first three movies because they so perfectly encapsulated the zeigeist of mid-2000s mid-america wannabe-gangster culture. It so directly spoke to what my experiences growing up were, they're like the movie version of that story you wrote when you were 15 and burned all the copies of when you were 16. As a result, I stopped after watching 4 in theaters, thinking the series had lost what I loved. After seeing 7, I realized the series has evolved into an a-musical American version of Bollywood action movies, and I have to love it for that.

    Have a sequel where the Rock retires and becomes a lifeguard for Baywatch. But Toretto is dragged into a job down at the beach. This way we'd have not only the ensemble cast, but also the hilariously idiotic Zac Efron. We could call it Furious 9: The Miami Heat. Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron could all make a cameo. FAST FIVE IS SO FUCKING GOOD

  • @R0SE727
    @R0SE727 7 років тому +101

    Fast Five is my fav movie bc that's when it just starts getting nuts, like Dom uses the forward momentum in his car to crash it into the side of a highway so that he can jump, catch Letty mid-air, and land on the hood of another car. At the time it was the best thing I'd ever seen but they've only gotten wilder since then. I was gonna say I recommend the entire series purely for the scene where the rock literally flexes his cast off but there's so many ridiculous moments to unpack besides that. The casts for these movies literally just keep getting better and better (and they're incredibly diverse so other franchises have no excuse). So yes bring Han back and also C-Tates, that's something I didn't know I needed until now. Thanks for saying literally everything in defense I've ever thought abt these movies

    You’re the reason I’ve been obsessed with the fast and furious franchise for the past year. I own every movie and they’re my favourite thing in the world now. My friend Gavin and I even plan to watch them all together in a couple weeks so we can write the 10th. I’ve literally gotten dates by talking about the fast and furious. You’ve literally made my life better by showing me how amazing these movies are, and I am incredibly grateful for that. Thank you.

    I am so happy I found you and this video. My friends always made fun of me for liking this franchise. Especially when I told them just how much I love the scene that has to happen in every fast & the furious movie, the sequence with the cars, the girls and the music. I still have to find the video that reunites them all, from the first to the last movie.

    I love all these movies. I'm such a big fan of the Fast and Furious movies.
    They're really fun action movies. And it's one of the few long-running blockbuster franchises that has nothing to do with superheroes.
    And I know you guys may not ask for it, but here's my thoughts on all 7 movies;
    The Fast and The Furious- I like this movie, it's what got me into the franchise in the first place. Plus, it's a much better Point Break remake than the _actual_ 2015 remake.
    2 Fast 2 Furious- My least favorite movie in the franchise. Bad Boys II was much better. But I still liked it, regardless.
    The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift- Out of all the crappy movies I saw in 2007, this felt like a _godsend_ to me. Sure, it wasn't great, but I prefer this over something like Ghost Rider or Alvin and the Chipmunks, ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.
    Fast and Furious- Again, like with 2007, 2009 had a lot of crap movies, but this is one of the better ones. While many people hate it, I still liked it.
    Fast Five- An amazing movie that was one of my favorite movies of 2011. Awesomeness from beginning to end.
    Fast & Furious 6- Everything I liked about Five, but turned up to Eleven. My favorite movie of 2013, in a long list of movies in 2013 that I liked (and no, Frozen is _NOT_ one of them) Seriously, that flip car was fucking awesome.
    Furious 7- My favorite movie ever. This movie right here, is my Terminator 2. It's so fucking awesome. So many awesome action stuff and the Paul Walker tribute was one of the most heartwarming things I have ever seen in 2015.
    I'm so excited for Fate of the Furious and I can't wait to see it, when it comes out.
    Edit: Tokyo Drift came out in 2006, my mistake.

    @danueb_ 7 років тому +5

    Yo, this series.
    This was one of those videos for me, man, where I was embarrassed the whole time about how much I agree with what you're saying. Tokyo Drift really does get a bum rap (although imo ppl who claim it's the secret best are over-correcting). These movies really are at their best when they're *sincere*, but not *serious*. Han really is the best character.
    The first movie really is a Point Break ripoff, but the fifth movie is an even more egregious of a ripoff of Oceans 11... with the BIG caveat that it's waaay more entertaining than the movie it's ripping off! So theft justified, IMO!
    Oh: 5 > 6 > 2 > 1 > 3 > 7 > 4

    • @patrickhwillems
      @patrickhwillems  7 років тому +2

      I actually don't think 5 is all that much of an Ocean's 11 rip. Assembling a big crew for a job is like every heist movie ever. If the villain was dating Letty and Dom was trying to get her back, THEN it would be an actual ripoff.
      Also, 2 Fast in third? Bold statement.

    • @danueb_
      @danueb_ 7 років тому +1

      "Ripoff" is strong, and I'll disclaim all this by reiterating that I like Fast 5 significantly more than Oceans 11, and that these are playful observations not accusations of plagiarism or anything.
      But after re-watching both I was surprised at a lot of conspicuous similarities. It's not just the big story elements, like how they both rewind at the end to explain the safe/vault switch as Dwayne Johnson/Andy García pieces things together. It's also in little moments, and in side characters: Leo and Santos are essentially Puerto Rican mirror universe versions of the Mormon brothers Virgil and Turk. And both movies have RC car sequences played mostly for laughs.
      And yes, I'm aware that my placement of 2 is controversial. But I enjoy these movies most when they keep the soap opera melodrama brief and sweet, and 2 Fast sidesteps that whole issue by having no melodrama at all.

    • @patrickhwillems
      @patrickhwillems  7 років тому +2

      Oh wow, I didn't even notice any of those connections. Maybe Chris Morgan DID just watch Ocean's 11 before writing and used a bunch of ideas. And honestly if he wants to just keep taking inspiration from Soderbergh movies, that's cool with me.
      (I also really love the Ocean's movies)
