If you can’t understand the willing creative adaptation to problems and beliefs then you probably just won’t, but there’s nothing wrong with that. I agree with him but what about rhythm? Timing? Chord progressions? All the little things that music usually needs to be listenable. If I just follow my heart I’ll end up making something that sounds unlistenable. There are some unspoken rules to making good music right?
When you have no skill you have taste. Your taste is what makes you a good creative. Gaining skill and knowing the technical side of music allows you to express that taste more authentically and closer to what you hear in your head. Even though Rubin doesn’t actually have the technical skills he is really good at getting artists(the ones who do have the skills) to authentically get as close as they can to their true vision. He is a master curator of taste.
