Yes, so long as it's during the creative process and not an 'if only I knew then what I know now'. Eventually, we must put a full stop on projects and move on. So important to respect our past selves knowing that in that moment we were the most present, honest, and skillful being that we could be. I think the magic in what Rick is saying is that he knows himself and what he is capable of. How many of us can honestly say what our best effort is. This is a very difficult place to get to. That's his great asset.
Honestly I think everyone knows if they’re honest with themselves So technically I think it’d be more apt to say “how many can truly be honest with themselves?” I mean, how difficult is it to know what you’re good at and not good at? You should have a good understanding on that lol Most just don’t wanna be honest about it for whatever reason and ego
At the same time, he's honest about his capabilities, and he doesn't hold back from going at it. I think a lot of people have their standards too high (I'm guilty of this) and then don't go and make the effort to produce whatever is your current level, because you _think_ you should be able to do better. Of course this doesn't pan out well, since you won't take action that would make you better at whatever you're doing, and thus your potential doesn't grow. What I'd like to learn, is to follow my instincts more. When I get an idea in my "antenna", I should act on that idea and see where it takes me, instead of turning to that overthinking mode and wondering whether or not I will like the result, or if other people think it's good or not.
Art is self expression. Practice is separating the signal (that which you want to communicate) from the noise (that which distracts from your message and should be discarded). Talent is when people like what you have to say and skill is when people understand it.
Rick Rubin has such interesting perspectives. Most Artists/Producers I've heard so far in interviews say something like that: "a song could alway be better, but you have to stop somewhere". And Rick says "If it could be better, it's not done". I know it's just words, but it just stood out to me, I expected a different answer. I guess it might have to do with how centred, honest and aligned he is with himself. He probably doesn't live with "shouldas, wouldas and couldas" and that comes through in his work. He probably just feels in peace when finishing a project and that's probably also how he knows it's finished. Very interesting.

As somebody who recently started mixing/dj'ing music...this is 100% correct. I enjoy playing for people and making them smile. Seeing people smile while I play music is the best feeling ever. Knowing that I did that for them. But also knowing that MY MUSIC...my tastes...did that for them. At that point we are sharing an experience together at that point. I'm playing what I like, and they also happen to enjoy it as well. I hear people always say "play to the crowd." Fuck that. I play what I want. I think this is all true for someone that is happy. If you are depressed or were raised by a perfectionist or many other traumas, I don’t know how well it holds up. Someone that’s depressed or raised wrong will not have confidence to think something is ever good enough. They wonder why they can’t do what they know they should and have no drive to do them. One of the most surprising and admirable things about Rick Rubin is that - despite his records having such a unique sound - he doesn't engineer or play on anything; his sound is purely through his relationship and honouring of the artist.
Really like how he focusses on what you can control, on optimising the internal world, and seeing what happens, rather than fixating on how you think the outside world will react
This is super inspiring to me, working hard on our YT channel making things that I love, trying to stop doing this miserable labor job I've been doing for over a decade, a job that I don't want to be doing, wakin up at 3 in the morning, working like an animal. I pray you follow your dreams, and get the support you need, and become successful, I believe you can. God bless.
I am composing songs..for ME nkw. Im 61. Made a living in showbiz but always made art for others..ie the audience. Now I am my own best audience and it is so fulfilling!
nice to hear Rick say it. We all know it, if we follow our feels. Making music for other people just doesn’t hold up long. There is no choice but to work from the inside, even if you won’t make money from it. In fact, art has nothing to do with money, it has to do with the urge to express your Self 🔥
Art is the reflection of the creator. People subscribe to someone who makes art that is relatable, to them selves. then there is a connection, a mutual understanding, that's the charm of art. I want to see what makes you hurt, scream, cry, smile, not something you think i will like. I don't want to be fed bullshit.
He’s sooo right! The reason there is so much bad art, bad music, and bad creativity is cause most people that are making it have only their own popularity in mind.
I don't know... to say bad art exists seems to assume you know everything about where the creator of said art was coming from, or intending. I don't think you (we) can know that. In other words, just because I don't like something, doesn't make it "bad".
Yoo when I say that I am incredibly grateful for this channel, I mean that with my whole heart. I’ve found motivation and confidence time after time. Thank you for the work that you do !
i love the mtv interview where frank ocean says everytime you overthink melody its bad because its so true and probably the most eye opening for me because it's liberating to know that your instinct trumps all those external pressures and signals
Most producers inject their own essences into the work but Rubin works like a therapist encouraging and enabling the artist to pour as much of themselves into it.
Even though I think Rick is a little overrated by others, when he speaks, damn does it resonate with what I also know as a producer and artist...SBN RESONATE
I make electronic music on soundcloud for fun, based on bits of many influences (I'm 62, so grew up with many)...producing music, exploring sound design and the ability to do it all for free is a wonderful thing. It's my passion, and always evolving. Some followers seem to like it too, plus, I sometimes collaborate and find interesting musicians from around the world. Music is amazing. ;-)

Someone that’s depressed or raised wrong will not have confidence to think something is ever good enough. They wonder why they can’t do what they know they should and have no drive to do them. That is a very different picture than this. Now you can fix that depression/trauma and then this is all true but don’t feel like a loser if what I said applies just keep trying and find fulfilling things until you’re happy than the sky is the limit!
no this kinda wisdom is come through a person that has overcome the things your talking about
@@gatkillah2473 yea that’s what I said lol read the comment. But telling someone that’s currently messed up to stop overthinking is like telling a drug addict to stop doing drugs
Everything Rick says here is clear and wise..overthinking ..as I famously do...is not healthy..and can steal happiness
One of the most surprising and admirable things about Rick Rubin is that - despite his records having such a unique sound - he doesn't engineer or play on anything; his sound is purely through his relationship and honouring of the artist.
He's old school a&r... His talent is his ears, and his nose for a hit!
He played guitar on Beastie boys songs
@@markl5998 That was Kerry King from Slayer
the first 30 seconds is the best and only advice any real artist needs to remember , respect to RR
Won't draaag out this comment.
But this video literally changed my life.
"Be your own audience. Do what *YOU* love".
game changer. 🙏🏾🙏🏾
At My Age, Rick Rubin is a positive Force in my Musical Journey. I'm Moving foreword. Love this guy. hope to work with him someday.
Rick is one of those people who’s advice is priceless.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Really like how he focusses on what you can control, on optimising the internal world, and seeing what happens, rather than fixating on how you think the outside world will react
Loss has been my only regret. I miss my family.
His soul is so young and so wise at the same time ❤
"not listening to anyone" advice at 0:18 and thats when i clicked stop on the video.
"you be the audience" 30 seconds in. possibly the best advice I've ever received.
The way modern music is able to directly tap in to the audience is through the voice. Rick's genius is hearing those voices that resonate
This is super inspiring to me, working hard on our YT channel making things that I love, trying to stop doing this miserable labor job I've been doing for over a decade, a job that I don't want to be doing, wakin up at 3 in the morning, working like an animal. I want to do things I love, I want to wake up, and be excited everyday to work. Anyone out there trying to do something they love, and end that miserable job you shouldn't be doing. I pray you follow your dreams, and get the support you need, and become successful, I believe you can. God bless.
Make it the best it can be
Period! 'Nuff Said✌️😎👍
a solid takeaway.
" I am not trying to figure out what to say next, or form an opinion, I am trying to understand "
Him: "The only advice I would have is to not listen to anyone..."
Me: yes. what else sir
You think about the audience if you're being honest to yourself
Lol
I am composing songs..for ME nkw. Im 61. Made a living in showbiz but always made art for others..ie the audience. Now I am my own best audience and it is so fulfilling!
Your videos are truly helping me on my path. THANK YOU SO MUCH !
Yes. Agree. To understand is crucial. Vibrationally, emotionally, rationally🎉
nice to hear Rick say it.
I don't want to be fed bullshit.
really appreciate this, always nice to hear some knowledge bombs from Rick Rubin
Do What You Love & You Do Great.
1:20 Rick just gave all over-thinkers a panic attack
Wonderful. This kinda validates what I’ve been doing (for me). Thanks Rick. 🤘
rick rubin showed me transcendental meditation
Keep going! UA-cam favors creators that upload consistently! You're videos are different so they will get the attention they deserve!
^^^^ seriously dude! Keep up the great work!
🏁
Most producers inject their own essences into the work but Rubin works like a therapist encouraging and enabling the artist to pour as much of themselves into it.
Thank you for this video. So many gems to dissect
This video blew me away. So many tokens of wisdom. I can already tell this will stick with me and have an impact on me.
thank you anasui very cool
Before watching this:
Rick Rubin, if you can get me to stop overthinking, that will be the best thing you’ve done for me since Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
Practice what you preach, Rick! Most of artists that he produces nowadays are "manufactured" keeping meticulously in mind broad audience.
Even though I think Rick is a little overrated by others, when he speaks, damn does it resonate with what I also know as a producer and artist...SBN RESONATE
Rick is one of the greatest producers of out time.
I wish they'd stop waking up Rick from naps to do these interviews. At least let him him brush his hair first. LOL
Music is amazing. ;-)
Yo that’s great content!
Thank you for these videos, really helps 🙏🏻
Sometimes I think I’m going crazy, alone with my dreams
Stay dreaming, you got this Alex!
@@ArtSupport1 thanks a lot ☺️
Thank you for your comment. Make sure that you get the crazy out, art as therapy. Hang in there. Keep creating. All the best regards to you 🙏
Rick always got the best advice
as a fashion major your videos are bringing great motivation my way. thank you❤️
Much respect for Rick Rubin
Rick is a sensational speaker Well Done, never to be doubted, his production and his attention his artwork is so prolifically profound, he works art in his music is captivating and spellbounding, congrats Rick
His words should be mantra for everyone. Not only for artists.
Trevor got really wise after the events on Los Santos...
Rick is a wise man. Agree with his thoughts to the table
This guy looks like I either shouldn't at all follow his advice, or totally absolutely should follow his advice.
Take my word, you should.
